It's tragic news to hear that Hou Hsiao-hsien has retired from filmmaking due to his dementia. According to IndieWire, the news was first announced by Tony Rayns at a screening of Hou’s 1985 film “A Time to Live and a Time to Die” in London on October 23. Several sources have confirmed the news, and it seems that Hou’s long-awaited project “Shulan River” will never be realized.

This is a huge loss for film.

This is awful news. I've seen a couple of his films, Flowers of Shanghai probably being the most well known. I have been meaning to check out City of Sadness and Dust in the Wind for ages.

Welcome to the human race...
His films were always so hypnotic, contemplative, and undeniable. This is definitely a tragedy.

One of my favorite directors.
Dust in the Wind
A Time to Live, A Time to Die
Daughter of the Nile
The Assassin
Flowers of Shanghai

Each one so beautiful to watch. Truly a loss for cinema.
