West Side Story's Anita did join Vito Corleone and The Joker in Oscar history when Ariana DeBose danced in Rita Moreno's award-winning footsteps as Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to the other firsts that came with Ariana DeBose's Oscar win for West Side Story, it was the first female performance from a Spielberg film to win. For as many of Spielberg's films have been nominated for Best Picture (twelve) and Best Director (eight) there have not been an overwhelming number of corresponding nominations in the four acting categories. DeBose was the seventh woman nominated and fifteenth actor overall in Spielberg's six decades of filmmaking. Compare that to his friend and contemporary Martin Scorsese whose films so far have produced twenty-three acting nominations and five wins.
