Let this thread serve as a time capsule of sorts where we speculate on the future of movies. Some relevant topics to touch on include framerate, physical medium, sequel culture, the superhero genre, cinematic universes, the ratings system, the devices we watch movies on, the sustainability of theater chains, another collapse of the studio system, how the Chinese market will continue to affect blockbuster releases, etc.
Seeing as how this forum has been around for 15 years already, I'm sure there are also many interesting threads we can look at today for reference. This one from 2006 titled "The future of film is on the net, not in the cinema" is especially pertinent given that it was created a year prior to Netflix expanding its direct-to-home rental service include online streaming. OK, so grocery shopping flopped on-line. Stock market trading didn't do so well, and banking on-line still needs some patches re-worked. But DVD rentals on-line is about the greatest thing since...well DVDs!
