The hitcher. The original of course, an absolute classic and, genuinly unnerving, not in its use of blood or gore but rather Rutger hauers compelling and sinister performance as the hitcher and the mysterious elements. The film doesnt let up from the opening frame as a young guy driving down a desert highway (an eerie soundtrack/score) picks up a hitcher, in 5 minutes you experience the young guys escalating fear and graduall realisation of WHO he has in his passenger seat.

The keep, 1983, nazis, a nazi-hating demon, a jewish doctor (ian Mckellan) who wants to free the demon, a mystetious stranger/warlock who wants to slay the demon and loves the jewish doctors daughter and a crazy "far-out" score. say no more, you either want it or you dont :-)

This was an early michael mann picture.

DEAD MANS SHOES

Outstanding brit revenge thriller, paddy considine leaves for the army, upon returning he finds his younger slightly mentally handicap brother had been mercelesly bullied. You see it all through flashbacks, its wonderfully shot, for those who have seen "war horse" you may recognize the younger brother as the british soldier whom the german joins to free the horse. Brutal in parts but theres a LOT more to it than that, directed by the brilliant shane meadows

In Bruges

Generally as a rule I dont like Colin Farrell but this film is a little gem, fresh, funny, sharp, suprising, Ralph fienns is great as a cockney gangster sent to bruges to dispatch Farrell, who (can't believe Im saying this) is good as the hapless guilt ridden first time hitman (wont say why for may be spoiler)

Charming, suprising, almost perfect.

CRAZY PEOPLE

"Hello, hello, hello, what a wonderful word, hello!"

One of my all time favourite films, it never gets old, dudley moore plays the advertising man who one night goes a bit crazy with his job printing such slogans/advertisments as "The Freak - this movie wont scare you, it will **** you up for life" and "porsche - its a little too small to get laid IN but you get laid the minute you get out" etc etc. In the morning he realise he got a little over enthusiastic, unfortunatly he sends the work to PRINT by mistake and his slogans end up in magazines, billboards etc much to the dismay of his boss who sends him to a "institution"

Enter a bunch of really loveable madcap characters, inc daryl hannah as the love interest, soon he begins to enjoy his time there, though outside his advertesments seem to be working, "the freak" is sold out! Everybodys buying porsche’s! His bosses have an idea... are ALL crazy people good at advertising? just a wonderful feel-good, laugh out loud jewel.

"We cant level, you crazy bastard, were in advertising"

CARANDIRU.

The true story of the massacre that took place at carandiru penitentiary, sao paulo, Brazil, oct 2nd 1992 when riot police stormed the building killing 102 inmates following a riot.

The movies not all about that, but prison life told through the eyes of the prison doctor on whose real memoirs the film is based. This is dynamic vibrant authentic storytelling with multiple storys running intertwined of the prisoners life's and the events leading up to the riot and massacre which just come like a punch in the face after an already incredible journey. Darkly humorous, powerful, put me in mind a lot of CITY OF GOD with its style, numerous chapters and genius. A top film.

I though it was a pretty good movie as well. It's from the time when Brazil made a good set of movies in the late 1990's, early 2000's. Such as Central Station, Carandiru and City of God.
