Thanks for the invite, Camo, but unfortunately I haven't even seen one by von Sternberg. But I'll be interested in following from afar.

I know you all really like old hollywood films so are any of you fans of Von Sternberg? And if we were to do him for November would you be interested in joining? You wouldn't have to decide now just thought i'd let you know we are considering him since you may be fans.

Thanks for the invite. I'm not familiar with Von Sternberg, but his name sounds familiar. I'll have to look him up, but I think he may have directed an early Cary Grant movie, (but that's just a guess).
I'll look him up when I get a chance and think about it after I get an idea about his type of movies.

Guess this is the Cary Grant film - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blonde_Venus
It was his fifth film.

Cool, you've got plenty of time to decide it won't be until November.

Yes, that's probably the movie. I'm not as familiar with Grant's very early movies as I am with his later movies, but I recently bought a DVD box set of his 1930s movies, so I can see all of them. (I've seen most of them on TCM, but I think I've missed a few.)

Damn the guy directed a Japanese film, that's so weird to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatahan_(film)

Awesome. Yeah you can pick, we'll see how many want to take part before we decide who picks what. We are leaving it to November to try and get more involved as the last two have been just me and Sean, plus there's the October Challenge and 70's HoF starting so it'd be best to wait a bit.
Thanks for the invite and anytime you do one of these and you need another person just give me a shout out, most likely I would be up for it. This should be fun
hey, @Citizen Rules there's a Gene Tierney movie directed by Sternberg; The Shanghai Gesture that, if you haven't seen, you may very well enjoy.

I haven't seen The Shanghai Gesture, though I've wanted to. Have you seen it?
Blonde Venus is a memorable movie and often comes up in topics of Pre-Code films. Have you seen Cary Grant in Thirty Day Princess (1934)? I've seen it a couple times, fun film and right up your alley. I think I might have even reviewed it, but too lazy to check

The Shanghai Gesture centers around a gambling house owned by a "dragon lady" and Tierney's character is the daughter of someone looking to extend his realty control by snatching up the casino. IMdb The Shanghai Gesture should you like more detail. But, yeah, I'm pretty sure you'll like it a lot.

You actually expressed interest at the start of the thread and i asked if you had anyone in mind you'd like to do but i never heard back. In later ones you can recommend directors you'd like to do and we can decide together, that was the idea of this thing. As long as it's not like David Lynch or Martin Scorsese who i've seen most of their films i'm fine with anyone.
actually saw both of these a few years ago. Though Thirty Day Princes doesn't sound familiar. My room mate and I were in a serious pre-code/Dietrich kick and saw them and most of the Dietrich movies in this Director's list; which is why I'm pretty excited about doing this The ambience of the films were pretty incredible and I would love to revisit them and/or others.

yeah, our library had a nice selection with about 3 or so movies to a dvd and we went through em like wildfire. One of them was seeing such a young Clark Gable. Migod, he must of been in his early twenties.
And I'd be curious to see what director you'd suggest, CR.

What do you think about how he portrays drinking in his films? I think I bring a lot of my own thoughts to that aspect of his characters and can't put my finger on his view on it.
And an insomniac -- I read from Gazzarra, Falk, etc., that he could only sleep 1-2 hours a day, and that he spent a month in the editing room.
Something posted within the last year -- an hour documentary that I'm sure has clips of this..

He was a closeted alcoholic... After knowing that it was interesting to see the three guys (Husbands), and Ben saying how he drinks, and Peter a bit, but not John..

What do you think of Josef Von Sternberg? That's who we are most likely doing in November and Citizen said he'll most likely take part, ed is a strong maybe and gbg is a maybe. He's an Old Hollywood Director so i assume you'd be interested?

I never saw anything by Josef Von Sternberg -- but I'd love to hear someone's recommendations on a talkie; I can't seem to get into silent films regardless of the attempts.
Thanks for the invite, but I just signed on for the 70s HOF, but I always check out the Newest Threads, and with the "Mentions" now, it should be easy to keep track..
I spent almost an hour reading all the reviews and comments and enjoyed them much.

@matt72582 I always am interested in the type of profile videos you post but when facing actually watching them or starting a movie I always choose the latter. Might try to watch the Cassavetes one though. What did you think of Shadows?

Yeah, here's your post saying you were in haha - https://www.movieforums.com/communit...13#post1763713
Besides a movie coming together with Cassavetes, the more of his movies I saw, the more I appreciated the others after watching those, as I rotated.
