What the heck is pan-and-scan anyways? I've heard it used by some people before but, don't understand it.

We have seen it a thousand time on TV. A still photograph is displayed and often while a narrator does a voice over we see the picture slowly enlarge as it zooms in on some aspect of the photo. This technique is called a 'Pan and Scan'.

Pan and Scan is used when a movie is formatted to fit a t.v.

Normally you would see a scene like this in letterbox:



But since the edges have been cut off for formatting, you only see this:



The only way to see the other guy now is for the camera to pan right then back left again. It's most obvious in car scenes; if the camera keeps panning back and forth between the people in the car, chances are that a widescreen viewing would have them all in one shot.
