The Thread Where We Talk About Baseball

The Snakes would obviously be my choice for Champs but yeah the Rangers eliminating the Astros was pretty sweet. I'm just starting to get back into the game, a lot new players I don't recognize, game has changed a lot over the past few years. It shocks me starting pitchers only last between 2 - 5 in these games now unless there just flat out dealin'. That seemed to be how clubs won the series ''if" they had the arms to do it now it seems to be more level the way teams use their rotation and innings. Crazy.
I'm just now getting back into baseball, too. Starting with the ALCS series of all things. I guess being from Texas lured me back in, what with the two teams playing that series. I'm glad the Raners won as they're closest to where I live and I've been to several games in my lifetime. It's kind of hard for me to watch baseball all season: first, as to the sheer amount of games played during the season and finding time to watch. Second, finding a network that will show the games on a regular basis. For whatever reason, on cable our local Fox network would only show one or two games. All of the games, however, were shown on FS1 (Fox Sports 1). I think it's crappy if you don't have a certain cable package, then you might not get that network. I'm just lucky to have it.

But I'm sure the series will be on a broadcast network like Fox, right?

And the beat goes on. Beat the Brewers in the playoffs = you're going to the World Series.

1981 Yankees lost WS
2008 Phillies won WS
2011 Cardinals won WS
2018 Dodgers lost WS
2019 Nationals won WS
2020 Dodgers won WS
2021 Braves won WS
2023 D-backs ??? WS

1982 is the exception.

Pfft, I grew up in Easton, Pa., an hour north of Philly, and we never rooted for the Phillies. (We were a Mets family.)

Now I'm in western Pa. and obviously root for the Pirates/Bucs! It's a thankless job but somebody's gotta do it. (I moved here in 1979 for college--the year both the Pirates and the Steelers won their respective crowns. I'd never lived in a sports town before, so I just assumed Pittsburghers were generally insane as I watched the town go crazy on those two separate nights...)
I always loved the Pirates. In 1960 when they won the NL Pennant I took a trolley downtown that evening to help celebrate. There were tens of thousands of fans cheering and partying in the streets. Although only 16, I even finagled a beer!

Then when the Bucs met the Yankees for the WS it was one of the greatest ever. Behind 7-4 late in the 7th and final game, eventually Bill Mazeroski hit that infamous walk off home run to win the Series-- probably the only time that's ever happened. The contest was so popular that they played the final part of the 7th game over the P.A. system at my high school!

Bob Prince was my favorite Bucs' sportscaster. Later Myron Cope became popular, who you probably remember. I believe it was he who invented the "terrible towel". Now you see them at a lot of ball parks.

Yeah, we all miss Myron Cope here in da 'Burgh. Double Yoi! And YES, everybody stole his Terrible Towel idea! Harrumph!

Yeah, I loved Cope's sportscasting. Listened to him every radio broadcast that I could. He had such a heavy Pittsburgh accent: "terri-boo tahl"...

That Pgh accent is unique and instantly recognized by anyone from Pittsburgh. Occasionally when talking with a company rep or operator on the phone, I'll hear that accent, and always ask, "What part of Pittsburgh are you from?" They're always surprised by that...

I wasn't born here, so the accent can still get under my skin, even after more than forty years here. I'm grateful that, because neither of their parents were raised here, none of my now-grown kids have Pittsburgh accents. (Thank you, @Yoda!) My husband was born and raised here and does have a SLIGHT accent but it's under control and he doesn't let it off the leash too often.

If you haven't listened to Pittsburgh Dad, have a look. He's a lot of good, clean Pittsburgh fun: http://www.pghdad.com/. And he definitely talks sports on occasion. (What Pittsburgher can resist?)

Oh, and another hilarious group riddled with heavy Pittsburgh accents is Greg & Donny:

Thanks for all the links! Those Greg and Donny videos are a riot! Good-natured fun-- about nothing, like Seinfeld. The busty blonde has a real typical accent, not quite South Side, but pure Pittsburgh for sure.

Philly has a completely different accent-- almost a combination of Eastern PA, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

Yeah, Easton/Bethlehem is more of a Philly twang accent. I can hear it in the way my parents both talk, but I think mine is tempered down to almost nothing because I moved out here at age 20. They talk more twangy than Pittsburgh folks. Kinda like a slight undertone of a New York accent, but not quite.

That young man is having himself quite a postseason.

Yeah, I'm attracted, or at least interested, in most U.S. regional accents. 'Course I'm a big believer in local anything.

Sadly though many regional accents are fading, mostly due to TV, iPhones, and videos. Along with it go local charm, and uniqueness...

Damn, Snakes have to be kicking their butt now after blowing game 1.

I've bet Arizona in both games, and plan to keep it up. A bit of a mystery on why sportsbooks keep making them such huge underdogs...

Well, that run differential. They're basically betting that the team they were all year is who they "really" are, which is probably the most reasonable belief. But the MLB playoffs are always short enough that anything can happen. Inferior teams win all the time.

Well I'm not betting it today! Haha sportsbooks are putting Scherzer as even money...also a bit of a mystery to me. Scherzer is not himself, but people have still been inclined to bet him all season (and maybe Pfaadt is finally getting a little respect in these playoffs).

Grats Ranger fans, Bochy strikes again. Lowest rated WS of all-time so take that for what it's worth. Fact that the Rangers lost Garcia and still closed the last two games out in convincing fashion says something I guess.
