Blissfully Oblivious
So great to see someone else who loves this movie. It's a former top ten for me (probably around #12 now) and I totally agree about it being Christina Ricci's best performance. I think it's among Samuel L. Jackson's best as well.

Just a shame it was marketed as some kind of pseudo S&M porn.

Agreed. The marketing is the reason I didn't give it five. I think that was what steered people away from watching it or made some critics confused on what it was going for.

Also like Chris Stuckmann said that Samuel L. Jacksons role in Hateful 8 was his best since Pulp Fiction and I was like "Have you not seen Black Snake Moan?"

The Martian
Ridley Scott
Am I the only one who thought this movie was very average ? The actors are good, but don't offer an astonishing performance. The ending is cheesy, very predictable and doesn't bring anything new to the table. But the script... it's so full of moments that look a bit like this :

''- Yo fam. I'm about to spit a scientific freestyle right here. Yall ready ?
- Hell yeah dude !
- Ayt. So let's turn this geomatic rover 12.66 degrees north-east. Then we will rotate the multi-processor of the space shuttle so it can align with Mars. Then, the proximity of the planet should be of 2856 meters, or 1723 kilo-knots. That should do it guys !!!
- Yo dude. That's a dope freestyle, but how do you know that's gonna save Matt Damon ? I mean, I know we're in Hollywood and all, but that doesn't even sound plausible.
- Don't worry dude. It don't matter if the plan makes sense or not dude. All we gotta do is wear this NASA patch I bought on Ebay and the plan will work. That's how it's done dude. Don't overthink this bro.''

Welcome to the human race...
You're not alone, I gave it a
in this review. Technically decent, but not enough substance to make it click for me.

Also, last movie I saw...

Mad Max: Fury Road -

Third time through, still good.

A very enjoyable flick but not among Hitchcock's best.

Whatever, looks like me and mark f are the only people on this site, who always watch every movie till the end.
I was like that until last year, for reason CR mentioned. I can only manage about 3 movies a week, so why waste it on something bad, when there are dozens of movies instead.

Monster (2003)

I don't think it helped that I watched a couple of terrific documentaries last month about Aileen Wuornos, although that's what finally pushed me to see this. I can't help but compare real to recreated. Charlize Theron was good in the title role; she had the walk and some of the mannerisms down pat. The make-up was a big aid to her though, and the 6 inch heigh difference was easily noticeable to me. I don't think it was Academy Award worthy, but still, I would consider her performance a strong point of the film. I did have a problem with the Christina Ricci character, a fictional character based on Aileen's real life lover. I'm guessing they needed to change the name due to legal concerns? Anyway, Ricci looked to me like she was a child in the movie, which is not her fault. But my big problem with the character was how much she was featured. Their relationship was a major focal point in the movie, and I would have rather that time been spent on her earlier years, and why she became such a tragic figure. I also hated the whole feel of the movie. I didn't think it ever developed that authentic feel, and instead came off as generic. Some great scenes and I love true crime films, so not a total waste, but I thought this movie should have been a whole lot better. Oh yea, using Journey's Don't Stop Believin' over the end credits made me want to puke.

Actual Aileen Wuornos mugshot-

It's a shame you didn't like it much, cricket. I've not seen it since soon after release, but I really liked it and thought the two performances (both individually and the chemistry between the two) were fantastic.

Maybe one day he'll see it again and like it more. Don't stop believin'!

Easy watch that goes right where you think it will. Love del Toro in a role like this, opposed to the garbage he was in Savages.

Savages is indeed a trash movie, but I thought he was great in it! Him and Salma were the only entertaining parts of that mess

I have to return some videotapes...
(500) Days of Summer - 6.5/10

A little cheesy at times and I didn't really buy their chemistry in the film, but the ending is so damn good and there are a couple other memorable scenes.

Watched the St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967).
This might be thought of as a pre-curser to modern-day mob movies ala Roger Corman!
It's got a large, very recognizable cast (with little gems thrown in like a small part for Bruce Dern and an uncredited appearance by Jack Nicholson).
It's the story of Al Capone vs. Bugs Moran in 1920's Chicago that culminates with the eponymous event.

What stands out about this movie is the narration (by the great Paul Frees - look him up - you may not know his name, but you know his voice!) which occurs periodically throughout the movie, and it tells who each character is, when they were born, what they did and how & when they died.

A great role for Jason Robards who doesn't resemble Capone physically, but plays the part well - he even takes up a baseball bat at one point - a scene given homage by Robert DeNiro as Capone in The Untouchables (1987)!

I give this 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Christmas Evil (1980)

It was average, yeah, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I'd probably give it a 3/5.

It's just the basic flick where everything that's supposed to go wrong goes right and that just pisses me off. Entertaining, but not worthy of its ranking on IMDB. But again, it's IMDB, so it doesn't really mean anything.

The thing isolated becomes incomprehensible
I knew that the V and the W sound the same in Germanic words.. I figured it had to do with the time period of the film and the migration of those who lived in New England area are of old Germanic tribes....

I was unsure of this theory so that is why I did not mention it.

Edit: good example.. the word "vindauga" is of Old Norse origin... but Im sure you can figure the modern English word out.
Just saw this. No, they don't! V in german sounds life an F, W sounds like a V (in english). The letter V is called in fact "fau"!

Except, of course, when it comes after a Q. Like Quelle is read as KVELLE, while Vater is read as Fater!
