She looks good – I'd like to see what she does with it.

1. Robert De Niro - Taxi Driver
I don't think anyone has captured the dread of loneliness so perfectly, along with the awful outcomes that follow once you let yourself sink in.
2. Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
Absolutely titanic. Acting that shakes you the core.
3. Harry Dean Stanton - Paris, Texas
Another performance delving in loneliness, this one, however, is about picking oneself up again. Stanton is heartbreaking and has never, IMO, used his unique look to better effect.
4. Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds
Even Quentin considers Landa his best character. Waltz is a terrible joy to behold. Charming, menacing and hilarious, often only a few frames from each other.
5. Oscar Isaac - Inside Llewyn Davis
There aren't many characters with whom I've felt as close to as Llewyn. Isaac gives the a movie star making performance by making what would otherwise be a painfully selfish character endearing and providing us with some of the best vocals in movie music history.
Guy deserved an Oscar for this.

While good i don't think Waltz is as good in IB as everyone else does. Other than that though great choices, those four are all excellent.

I forgot to include David Thewlis in mine, think he'd be my #2 or #3. Anna Karina in Vivre Sa Vie is a top three female performance for me. And you know how much Watsons character/performance and just the film in general kinda broke my brain . Think it has been long enough to watch it again and finally decide whether i love or hate it.

3: Lynda Steadman in Career Girls
Playing the same woman in her awkward college days and as a quite different person six years later. Out of all Mike Leigh's films I don't think this one gets talked about enough, or indeed at all .

4: Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Probably can sound like a cliché but he was so good and so memorable I had to put him in. I'm certain that if I hadn't known who was playing the Joker I wouldn't have recognized him.

5: Laurence Olivier in Clash of the Titans
I like this one the more I think about it, just because of how clever his idea was to deliver Zeus's lines to mimic a thunderstorm.
What I find interesting in retrospect is remembering Patrick Troughton in Jason and the Argonauts. When Phineas defies Zeus to make a deal with Jason there's the ominous rumble of thunder, and on the line "You grumble away all you like Zeus – I mean what I say" Troughton delivers it as a sarcastic, grumpy parody of the storm. It amuses me to think that Olivier probably saw the film and filed that away for future reference .
