Look, Fight Club? I get. American Psycho? Totally.
Taxi Driver?
TAXI DRIVER? I don't get this.
Are we going by the first sentence of Wikipedia? "A thriller story which emphasizes the unstable mental and emotional states of its characters"? That's NEVER established in the movie and it's practically vacant of thriller elements "suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety". Anxiety? Are we pinning the entire genre on Taxi Driver's lapel because the main character is anxious?
Even granting it that, Taxi Driver is on the extreme fringe of what you could ever possibly call a Psychological Thriller considering it's total lack of the following tropes:

The cover-up of important information from the viewer,
Literary devices such as red herrings,
Plot twists,
Cliffhangers,
Themes of perception, mind, existence, purpose, identity, and death,
A "dissolving sense of reality",
Amnesia is a common plot device,
Complex and tortured relationships,
Moral ambiguity,
Obsessive and pathological characters,

Obsessive and pathological characters,
Oh wait, those last two count because the main character is a single-minded vigilante and he's an unreliable narrator because I SO SWEAR HE'S GOT MENTAL PROBLEMS AND THAT'S ALL YOU NEED TO BE A PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER.
Is Rain Man a psychological thriller?
Is I Am Sam a psychological thriller?
Is Forrest Gump a psychological thriller?
I can't help but think that if I liked psychological thrillers and someone recommended Taxi Driver to me I would be extremely disappointed.
I know people like this movie, but that's like calling Aliens a comedy because it has a couple jokes in it.

One of my favorites is The Talented Mr. Ripley, I also love Purple Noon, the first attempt at adapting the Ripley book.
