I'm curious of all the stereotypes 
Maybe there's a grain of truth, but that also means there's a counter-passion against the stereotype. If one country is considered "pretentious" then you will probably have a minority who will do the opposite and avoid the academics and make something gritty and realistic. Even if they weren't hits back then, they could be revived today thanks to the internet.
