Does anyone know?

I'm looking for the title of a film for someone. Maybe someone here can help.

The film is maybe from the eighties, and is about a small boy (around 11), and he has a sickness forcing him to stay inside his room in a sort of bubble.

He is not allowed to have any contact with air, or he will die. So he stays inside, playing his guitar, having regular visits from his friend.

At the end, during Christmas, he desides to risk his life and run out into the open. It's supposed to be a real tearjerker.

That's what I thought, though I don't think Travolta was 11 years old at the time.
Maybe it was a different film, based on the same true story.
