Hi all. I've been a long time reader of this forum but never posted anything myself.
Looking at all the films that've been listed so far, it makes me think that the 2000s decade have been one of the greatest decades for cinema. There are so many films listed above that I have absolutely loved but haven't been able to add to my list. Anyways if I were to list my favourite films of the 21st century, they would be -

1) Yi Yi - Edward Yang
2) A.I. Artificial Intelligence - Steven Spielberg
3) The New World - Terrence Malick
4) Nostalgia for the Light - Patricio Guzman
5) There Will Be Blood - Paul Thomas Anderson
6) The Assassin - Hou Hsiao-Hsien
7) It's Such a Beautiful Day - Don Hertzfeldt
8) Computer Chess - Andrew Bujaski
9) Grizzly Man - Werner Herzog
10) Zodiac - David Fincher

I may change my mind sometime soon,

Too many good ones to only have 10. GAH, I can't even rank them accurately because they're so good!

2. Whiplash
3. The Hunt
4. No Country For Old Men
5. Mary and Max

This might just do nobody any good.
3) The New World - Terrence Malick

6) The Assassin - Hou Hsiao-Hsien
Good call on these two.

The former I hold very closely to myself and was really difficult to leave out but I think Tree of Life summarized Malick's cinematic message better any of his previous work, all of which would make the top ten of their respective years.

The Assassin is such a breathtaking film. Kicking myself for not seeking it out in theaters (though, in my defense, I doubt there were any showings near me).

Anyways, welcome to the boards!

I knew that Bad Boys II and Crank weren't that good.

Thank you very much. Indeed I think the Fountain will go down as an immortal masterpiece.

The Tree of Life is also a remarkable film. In a lot of ways it's Malick's most overtly religious film - a tribute to the notion of God itself - that boldly attempts to blend divinity with Darwinian evolution. Malick's approach is inevitably quite frustrating to people who watch his films & choose to focus on banal dramatic conventions such structure & storyline rather than their metaphysical ambitions. A lot of the critics who called it pretentious or misguided are I think completely missing the point. Unlike his previous 3 films, Malick isn't making some sort of philosophical statement in the Tree of Life. He has simply created a poem reflecting on his own childhood and his struggles with spirituality.

And although I truly respect The Tree of Life, I personally feel that the New World is a better film. The central question that runs through all of Malick's films is "What is man's relationship to nature?" In the New World, he gives us what is arguably his definitive answer, the sum total of his life as a filmmaker.
