Ted Lasso

Watched an episode of this for the first time and couldnt get into it...I'm a sports fan, but Sudeikis's accent was distracting to me, and the jokes weren't really my style.

This is months later, but for what it's worth, I had a similar reaction at first but I liked it more as it went on. It's very much character-based comedy, so it needs the viewer to get a sense of everyone to find their interactions funny or, in this case, funny because they're so apropos.

Anyway, few episodes into the third season now, should be caught up soon.

Fans of the series might be interested in checking out an Apple TV musical special headlined by Hannah Waddingham, who played Rebecca on the show, called Hannah Waddingham:
Home for Christmas
, which features the actress showing off her powerhouse pipes and guest appearances from Leslie Odom Jr and cameos from several Ted Lasso cast members. I've reviewed the show on my review thread.

What accent?

Assuming that's a real question, I think it was some kind of southern accent, but it came off odd to me.

Oh, ok, didn't really bother me, I just thought it effectively reminded us that Ted Lasso was basically a fish out of water here, evidenced in the expressions and stories he would tell the team that would just draw blank expressions from the team.

The character Ted Lasso, as well as Jason Sudeikis in real life, are both from Kansas City, MO. I reckon it is a regional Midwest-ish American accent, likely exaggerated for comic effect, though I can't vouch for how accurate it is or isn't. For a fictional character on a dramady I had zero issues with it. It is nowhere near as pronounced nor heavy as say Julia Garner's portrayal of Ruth Langmore's accent on "Ozark", which is set in a much more rural (fictional) section of Missouri.

We're getting a 4th season!!!

“Ted Lasso” is heading towards a Season 4 greenlight, Variety has confirmed.

Warner Bros. Television has picked up the options on original cast members Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift. It’s believed that Jason Sudeikis is involved in the revival in some capacity as an executive producer. Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.

Waddingham, Goldstein and Swift are known at this time because they are U.K. Equity members, and have different deals than the U.S. SAG-AFTRA cast. Those negotiations will happen next.

Talk of a “Ted Lasso” revival has been in the air since the show ended its run. Back in January, Warner Bros. TV CEO Channing Dungey teased to Variety the possibility of the series continuing after its Season 3 finale, which aired last year.

“I mean, you watched the finale, there’s a little bit of a door that could be kicked back open if need be,” Dungey said. “I wouldn’t put the period on the end of that sentence just yet. There is still a lot of love for ‘Ted Lasso.’ And I think that there still is a lot of enthusiasm on the part of Apple for ‘Ted Lasso.’ Should the opportunity arise, we’d be excited to jump back in to making more…. There are always conversations that are ongoing, just nothing that’s official.”

I would say, similar to "Schitt's Creek" in this regard, the set-up and some of the characters are very broad, but if you allow yourself to get past that initial reaction and to like the characters and actors, both of those series resonate emotionally, far beyond their premises and most obvious jokes.

Season 4 is official

Well, we can believe again.

Apple TV+ has officially renewed “Ted Lasso” for Season 4, with series lead Jason Sudeikis onboard to return as the titular pun-happy, mustachioed football coach. No other castings are officially confirmed at this time, though it had previously been reported that options had been picked up for Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift.

“As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,” Sudeikis said in a statement. “In season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”

Gotta be honest, while I've enjoyed this show, I don't feel strongly about whether it should continue or not. First couple of seasons were much better than the last one and it's not clear how much more there is to say or do. S3 definitely seemed to be casting about for plotlines, given how much time we spent in Keeley's agency. There was a little too much self-parody, where the people creating the show had a chance to see what people were responding to and leaned into it, perhaps too much.

I dig the wholesomeness, I love Scrubs and Shrinking so I'm down with a comedy that has genuine feeling, but always as an addition to the funniness, and I think somewhere along the way with Ted Lasso it became an either-or thing, where they would choose fan service/positive affirmation over comedy.

Anyway, I'll still watch the next season, but with muted expectations.
