My favorite "early" cartoons are the Betty Boop ones from the early '30s, No! No! A Thousand Times No!! and the really weird ones featuring music by a rotoscoped Cab Calloway, like Snow White and Minnie the Moocher. The earliest ones I've seen were by Winsor McCay (Little Nemo, Gertie the Dinosaur) from around 1910, so no, kiddies, 10 years ago aint that old.
My favorite pre-1980s (the decade when I was a kid) cartoons (cartoon meaning 'illustrated medium + humor') are the 8th Man, an American adaptation of a Japanese superhero show (originally aired in Japan in 1963) 8-Man, and Future Boy Conan, a 1978 tv series directed by Hayao Miyazaki, sort of a slapstick/ost-apocalyptic/earth-worship show.
