Phantasm - Original (only one I've seen)

The sequels are definitely worth a look if you liked the original. I actually feel Phantasm II is better than the first.

As Above, So Below - a pretty cool horror. reminds me The Blair Witch Project

^ ^ Never actually saw that one, but you just caused me to read the description. One of the scariest stories in "World War Z" (the book) took place in the catacombs under Paris, so this movie's going on my Netflix queue. Thanks.

I didnt realise that was a book series. I love fast zombies - nice change from comatose zombies.

It was actually a single book (albeit a follow-up to Max Brooks's pseudo-nonfiction "Zombie Survival Guide" -- gripping read in itself) with numerous stories, collected Studs Terkel-style by an international researcher after the worldwide zombie war.

Personally, I prefer slow zombies. It's more believable of re-animated corpses, and it distinguishes them from every other mob of homicidal maniacs. The idea that they're slow, but they just keep coming, as tirelessly as machines, and there are so many of them . . . that's what makes them scary for me.

Incidentally, the zombies are slow in Brooks's books. The movie people undoubtedly paid a fortune for the rights to the title, then changed absolutely everything about the story. There's not a single recognizable element from the book in the movie.

Oh I think it's certainly more believable but I just found fast zombies a bit novel when it seemed the screen was being saturated with zombies all at once.

The girlfriend who got me into extreme horror is really into the zmbie survival guide. Seems to have cult following.

I like your idea that them being slow but just keep coming makes them scary - the herd.

Thanks for posting that video!

Phantasm is a great series to get into if you've never seen them. The films should be much easier to view now thanks to the Blu-ray set released earlier this year, for a long time they were out of print and very hard to find.

The new Blair Witch movie was okay I guess, nothing great though I did enjoy the final 20 or so minutes. I've not seen the second yet but between the first and this one, I probably liked this one a little more.

I recently saw the original two again, and having seen them all, the third one from last year was probably the best which really isn't saying a whole lot. I find none of them are particularly good. Not bad but so forgettable. I really like the actual lore and legend of the Blair Witch (the fake documentary about her is great), but I find the movies so far to be sub-par.

I saw the original in the theater when it first came out (haven't seen it since), and I actually remember being reasonably impressed with the "realism". The mockumentary sounds interesting; what was the name of it?

The Curse Of The Blair Witch. It's a special feature on the DVD and Blu-ray.

I recall in an earlier post I mentioned Jurassic Park and if it counts as Horror. Seeing the trailer for the upcoming new film (Fallen Kingdom) it definitely looks far more Horror-oriented than the prior films. I recall one of the writers even said it's a Horror movie with dinosaurs and that's the vibe I get from the trailers.

In any case, the original film is easily the best by a massive margin. I feel the series declines considerably with each movie after the first, though I do think The Lost World has gotten better with age and despite it's faults is a pretty good movie.

Saw Insidious: The Last Key last night and it's a good addition to the series but Chapter 3 is still my favorite. This one might be my second favorite though, after a rewatch or two. I've enjoyed the series so far and am down for a fifth movie.

The second trailer that aired yesterday during the Super Bowl looks even more Horror-like than the first trailer. I just hope this movie doesn't portray the dinosaurs as monsters and lose that majestic quality the first two had. IMO one big flaw the last two films suffered from was the dinosaurs portrayed as monsters. The first two had that right balance of being a majestic adventure with scary dinosaur action, and I'm hoping this one is more like them.
