X-Men: First Class to start filming next year?

Last week IESB spoke to X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner on the eve of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine DVD release, but she wasn’t giving much away regarding the future slate of films. They did have this exchange, however:

IESB: How soon before you go into production on any of the new X-Men films? Whether it be Wolverine or X-Men First Class or Deadpool?

LSD: Next year.

IESB: For which one?

LSD: (laughter) I can’t say, I’m sorry. But, some of these we just aren’t ready to talk about yet.
So which one is Donner hinting at? X-Men Origins: Deadpool doesn’t have a script, and they have only just started developing the story for Wolverine 2. David Goyer said last month that X-Men Origins: Magneto “will move forward in the next year or so”, however 20th Century Fox don’t seem to be in a rush to make it. That leaves X-Men: First Class, and thanks to Twitter we may have some sort of confirmation. Tim Pocock, who played Cyclops in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, updated his Twitter page with this:

currently shooting Australian TV series till February 2010…then X-men first class
First Class takes place during the first year at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and along with Cyclops we will most likely see Emma Frost (blonde lady above) and other young versions of Beast, Jean and Storm. They will probably add a few new characters into the mix too. First Class has the potential to become the first ‘true’ X-Men film. Whether it will turns out good or not depends on who they get to direct, and we should hear who that is over the upcoming months if they plan on filming next year.

J.J. Abrams talks Star Trek sequel

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams recently spoke to SCI FI Wire about Star Trek 2, and while he didn’t reveal any plot details, he did talk about what the story should involve.

“The ambition for a sequel to ‘Star Trek’ is to make a movie that’s worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters — their meeting each and galvanizing that family — that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn’t mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths — truths connected to what we live — that elevates any story — that’s true with any story.”
He also said that they have “a really cool story” for Mission Impossible 4 and they should have the first draft of the script ready by the end of the year.

Spider-Man 4 Date Confirmed, Summer 2011 Jam-Packed Already

Sony confirms that the fourth Spider-Man film is set to arrive on 6 May 2011 – but what does that do to the summer 2011 release calendar?

Just a quick one: Sony has confirmed the release date of the fourth Spider-Man film, which will be quietly sneaking into cinemas on May 6th 2011. Sony has also confirmed that, as with the previous films in the franchise, there’ll be an IMAX-format release rolling out on the same day.

Spider-Man 4 is thus set to be the opening film of one of Hollywood’s most packed summers to date. Currently, summer 2011 is looking something like this:
  • May 6 - Spider-Man 4
  • May 20 - Thor
  • May 26 - The Hangover 2
  • June 3 - Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom Of Doom
  • June 17 - Green Lantern
  • June 24 - Cars 2
  • July 1 - Transformers 3 (announced by Paramount, but there’s some doubt as to whether the film will now arrive in 2011 or 2012)
  • July 1 - Battleship (based on the board game, directed by Hancock’s Peter Berg)
  • July 15 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
  • July 22 - The First Avenger: Captain America
  • July 29 - The Smurfs

On top of those, Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides is definitely arriving in the middle of the summer somewhere (looking at the schedule, either a late May or early July release date seems probable). And there’s also talk of Universal scheduling the fourth Bourne movie in there somewhere too, as well as the sequel to Wanted, which is currently slated for summer 2011.

The scary thing is this is still some distance away from the finished calendar, and we suspect that there are one or two big films yet to be slotted in. It’s unlikely we’ll see a Batman sequel for 2011 – although we can still hope – but would you rule out the fifth Indiana Jones movie arriving?

Might be worth finding a cinema that sells one of those unlimited monthly passes...

Nicolas Cage Explains Green Hornet Decision

A press release came out last week which confirmed that Nicolas Cage was in negotiations to play the gangster villain for the upcoming Michael Gondry and Seth Rogen adaptation of Green Hornet.

Quick thereafter, news broke that Nic Cage had turned down the role and left the project to instead work as the lead in two other films. Production was just starting so some were worried about them finding a worthy replacement quick. They sure as hell did though in bringing in to-be-Oscar-nominated Inglourious Basterds star, Christoph Waltz.

As to why Cage turned down the role, we now have the reason…

While promoting his film, Bad Lieutenant, Port of Call: New Orleans at TIFF, Cage answered questions on the topic of Green Hornet explaining that his decision stemmed from creative differences (he’s not the first to leave for that reason, looking back on Stephen Chow who was set to direct and play Kato before).

Cage revealed that Rogen and Gondry had different ideas for the character than he did and he “wasn’t interested in just being just a straight-up bad guy who was killing people willy-nilly.”

Instead, Cage wanted a character whose motivations made sense and whose evilness is explained and apparently there wasn’t the time to develop that into the script - production began two weeks ago.

The Green Hornet was something that I wanted to do, I think Michel Gondry is very talented and I had hoped it would work but I think Seth Rogen and Michel had a different take on the character,”

“I had to have some humanity and to try to give it something where you could understand why the character was the way he was but I don’t think there was enough time to develop it.”
It doesn’t really matter though anymore as he won’t be missed too much with Christopher Waltz replacing him. Waltz made big name for himself with his epic performance in the latest Tarantino flick and he represents a significant upgrade over Mr. Cage.

Green Hornet hits theaters December 17, 2010.

Tron Legacy Coming to IMAX 3D December 2010

Disney has announced that the upcoming Tron sequel, Tron Legacy, will debut in IMAX and IMAX 3D theaters the same day as the movie’s worldwide release (surprise), December 17, 2010. That means that you can see the crazy sort of CGI light cycle races and battles in full IMAX 3D glory!

Said Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group:

This is an ideal movie for IMAX’s immersive format…’Tron Legacy’ already packs a punch in Disney Digital 3D, and to give audiences the option to experience the enhanced premium IMAX 3D version is a real treat. We’re particularly excited to reach a much wider audience now that the IMAX network is expanding with its digital locations.
Here’s a quick synopsis:

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
Tron Legacy is being helmed by relative newcomer Joseph Kosinski and was written by Lisberger, Richard Jeffries, Brian Klugman, Lee Stemthal, Eddy Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, and Bill Wheeler (that’s a lot of pens). As stated, the film hits theaters (regular, 3D and IMAX 3D) on December 17, 2010.

The Karate Kid Remake Art and Title

From Sony’s website, here is official art from the Will Smith-produced remake/re-imagining of The Karate Kid, officially retitled The Kung-Fu Kid which still features the old title.

Here's the synopsis:

Jaden Smith plays Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who is forced to move to China after his single mother (Taraji P. Henson) is forced to transfer to the China for work. Of course, unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Jackie Chan plays Mr. Han (the Mr. Miyagi character), a maintenance man who spots Dre’s black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu.
Directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) and written by Chris Murphy and Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness). Filming on the remake has begun in Beijing, and is expected to last until mid-October.

The A-Team: First Look At The New Van & More Casting News

Today we have a double whammy of new items from the upcoming movie version of the classic 80s TV series, The A-Team. They are a new piece of casting news (don’t worry, none of the already announced actors have been replaced!) and our very first look at the famous A-Team black-with-red-stripe-van.

First up, let’s take a look at the new A-Team van, by way of a photo from the set (from SplashNews) where the movie is currently filming in Vancouver. Die hard fans of the original series will be pleased to know that the new van isn’t all that different from the original. It can easily be transferred almost identically to the 21st century movie update and work just as well. Take a look for yourself:

For the rest of the images (in which those with a keen eye or amazing photoshop skills may be able to work out if any of the primary cast are driving it) you can head over to SplashNews.

Now onto the casting news:

We’ve already learned who will replace the original actors in their respective roles: Liam Neeson is Hannibal, Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) is Faceman, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (the UFC fighter) is B.A. Baracus and lastly, Sharlto Copley (District 9) is Murdock. Along with Copley’s news the other day, it was also reported that Jessica Biel is starring in the movie as an army general and ex-lover of Cooper’s Faceman.

And now it seems (thanks to Entertainment Weekly) that Watchmen star, Patrick Wilson, will be joining The A-Team cast as some sort of CIA operative. It’s currently unknown if he will be helping or hindering the Team. Either way I’m always glad to see Wilson get more acting work: I personally think he’s adynamite acting talent to watch out for (if you’ve seen the both fantastic Little Children and/or Hard Candy, you’ll know what I mean).

In The A-Team, Neeson, Cooper, Jackson and Copley will play a group of Iraq war veterans (changed from Vietnam to place it present-day) who are trying to clear their names with the U.S. military which suspects the four men of committing a crime which they were actually framed for. The tone is being described as, “less silly and more slick.” Good news? It is being directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces, Narc) and written by Michael Brandt, Derek Haas and Skip Woods.

The A-Team is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11th, 2010.
