The Sopranos: An Ongoing Show Analysis by mrtylerdurden

I realized something today. I was thinking, "Man, I really want to watch a mafia movie that I haven't seen that is on a Martin Scorsese level, but I don't have anything like that. Wait, I have the sopranos.. Hell, I'll just watch that!" Every episode has that film quality so, why not?

one of the greatest show ever

Season 2 Finale
Spoilers Below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the best episode of the show that I've seen yet. This is one of the greatest season finale episodes I've ever seen. It was so perfect and layered. The death of P*ssy in the final episode is so saddening and poetic and perfect.

The dream sequences have great symbolism and meaning and Tony's ghastly, cadaverous appearance in the show somehow symbolize a downfall of sorts in a way. Or maybe it symbolizes that his mafia lifestyle is killing him and making him sick inside. There's so much to analyze in this episode alone that I could talk about it for ages, but sadly I don't have the time right now.

One thing that I especially loved about the episode was the ending. In the ending, we see scenes of Tony's pure and pristine life with his family and kids and Meadow graduating. We see a joyous graduation party and it is genuinely heartwarming. And then we see scenes of the dirty business infused with these heartwarming scenes of family. A shot of the family getting their photo taken is preceded by a shot of someone walking into a porn booth, presumedly owned by the "family". We see people laughing and smiling at the party and then see garbage workers dumping out trash. It's these things that The Sopranos does so well. They make a vast distinction between Tony's work life and home life, even though the two converge many times. The episode and season ends on a shot of a beach on the sunset with waves gently rolling along the shore. It's a beautiful ending shot and it seems like it's symbolising hope and possibly a new beginning. Is this a symbol of hope for Tony in the airline ticket fiasco he's inolved in? Or is it a symbol of hope for Meadow, who's moving out and going to college to live her life?I don't know, but I guess I'll find out when I get a hold of season 3 whic
h should hopefully be soon.

I'll just say that this episode completely blew me away, and reminded me why I'm watching The Sopranos in the first place. This is not just a "mafia show", it's a complicated, and rich story filled with deeper meaning and symbolism and some of the greatest characters on television. I cannot wait to continue watching this awesome show, because I am very impressed with it so far, and can see where it's heavy praise comes from.
I am LOVING this show right now, and am excited to continue watching it.

I know some disagree, but the thing I liked most about The Soprano's was that there isn't any dip in quality throughout the whole thing. It stays pretty constant, for me, and I don't think I have a favourite season even. Favourite episodes, yes, but not favourite seasons. I couldn't even tell you what happens when, tbh.

I mostly agree but I do have a favorite episode by a pretty good margin. I won't talk about it on his thread, but I will say season 2 finale was not my favorite finale.

I watched The Sopranos last year and it had a big influence on me, it was a really transcending experience. Never seen anything great like that and i hope i could rewatch it soon.

I've heard some say that the first two seasons are the strongest, and I've heard some say that they're the weakest. What do you think? Is the best still to come for me, or has it already passed? (No spoilers please) Anyway, on to episode 4 of season 3

Man, that's tough. In fact I have already decided while typing this I don't want to answer.

I guees the easy answer is Sopranos doesn't have a weak season so just enjoy.

It's the best television show ever made according to a number of top TV critics (I agree with them). Season one is the best, but it's also harder to appreciate because it's also where you're learning so much about the show. I didn't realize how good season one was until I watched the series a second time around. I don't see much difference between any of the other seasons though. The Pine Barrens episode really is the most entertaining single episode of the Sopranos, but I have been through this thread and it has been built up so much I expect it will no longer reach your expectations. The most intriguing episode is the final one which in my opinion is the best final episode/chapter of any TV show or movie ever created. There is one site that goes into detail explaining the final show in detail (about fifty pages long) and I have read every word of it. It genuinely reads like a graduate thesis but it's interesting. You're a very lucky dude to have so much of the show ahead of you.

Truly horrifying what happened to Dr. Melfi in episode 4. This was a very strong and powerful episode. It was good to know more about Dr. Melfi and get an episode pretty much centered on her. She goes through a lot, and the final scene in the episode is especially powerful, and shows how strong Dr. Melfi is.
