Devil (2010)

With The Night Chronicles, apparently, M. Night Shyamalan is writing and producing a themed trilogy of the urban supernatural. In ways very different than Urban Legend, the trilogy is, it seems, taking itself seriously in its storytelling, yet whether or not the perception of the film(s) coming across as methodical preaching was intentional is questionable at this point early on. In Devil, M. spotlights the old story of a group of people trapped together, and they must face their demons. It is as dim as it sounds, but fortunately the film doesn’t rely on a twist to “shock” or make up for lost time.

Throughout the film we follow the people in the elevator entering crescendos of distrust, a cop with a grudge on the outside trying to get in (which could’ve happened 30 minutes earlier than when he did), and some innocent bystanders who fail to use common sense. That said, Devil is edited well enough to where it doesn’t focus too much on one group to where you forget what the other people were doing, so in that respect it’s a simple film to follow. It makes good use of the many camera angles for the elevator, including the security screen’s view, but especially when the camera is put in the place of the characters themselves, which happens about half the time, is when the film is trying to sink into you. Good technique for enclosed spaces, but the film releases the tension far too often for it to be effective.

Another, again, standard concept running through the film is the religious notion that Satan is a bastard tempter and those who do evil should seek forgiveness, which I have loads of theological beef with but that’s beside the point that the story brings nothing new to the table about this tale about the Devil (because the title wasn't a spoiler) or any new twist on the message of how to be God’s poster child, so unless you’ve never been given a lecture about not being a dick, nothing here is new to you, which brings up another question.

What was the film’s aim? Was it trying to spread a message or was it just a fun glimpse of an urban legend about a Devil’s Meeting? Or was it M.’s way of showing the world he doesn’t need a twist ending to satisfy the third act? None of them come into focus more than the other, and in the midst of all the uncovering of new info about the characters, none of them prove worthy of mentioning in a very unfulfilling and predictable finale, of which provides closure to the story, but no real response of “Oh I see” but rather a question of its aim. Perhaps as the trilogy continues this can be answered or perhaps Devil was merely a convolution of fluff to allow M. to get around to his Unbreakable sequel. Meh.

5.5/10

Nice review... thanks for sharing... The trailer failed to make me even curious about this so I doubt I spend any money on it...

thanks for the nice review! Trailer was definitely a turn off with the elevator scene, there's enough movies where ppl get trapped in an elevator and something bad happens.

Great review! There are definitely a lot of elements that can be picked apart in this film. Going into it with low expectations, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Devil is certainly not Last Airbender bad. Then again, Shyamalan is just producing his story this time and Dowdle is starting to show some real promise in the director's chair.

I wish M. would go back to the days of "Signs" and "Sixth Sense." Both were legitimately great flicks. How did he sputter out this hard? *cough* Last Airbender *cough*

To be very frank i really liked this movie ! Yeah earlier on i was also thinking that it gonna be a flop movie but when i came out after watching devil movie ,believe me i was literally shivering ! I can say that now Devil is a good option to watch horror movies.

I'm not really sure if I want to give my time up for this movie. New age horror or suspense movies don't scare me at all. To much action, not enough suspense/horror. This movie maybe a light at the end of M. Night's tunnel, but its not enough for me to consider. His ego over shadows his abilities, and thus shows in his recent disasters.

And at the end of fear, oblivion
I only watched two movies from M. Night Shyamalan.
"The Village" and "Lady in the Water".

I only loved "The Village". But i'm really interested in watching "Devil".
The trailer got me really curious and also because i love horror movies.

Horror movies don't need to scare me for me to like them, so if this movie isn't scary at all it's not going to stop me from still wanting to see it.

I also love weird movies. This one looks weird so i'm curious. ^_^
And i really like elevator scenes.

I don't think your getting the full exspierance of M. Night. You have to watch his great films first to dislike him, and see what he has become. The village and lady in the water was his beginning downfall in writing and directing. I don't want to say that The Village is bad, just he could of done better.

Signs is an ok one. Its not bad but a redo to his movie formula. A twist ending and a religious undertone.

The sixth sense, I believe this is his greatest film. But I heard a rumor that he stole the script. I don't know if this is true, so if anyone knows please correct me.

Unbreakable
is another great one. I know this is the movie that really brought him to the spotlight.

Not really. The Sixth Sense was the film that brought him to fame in every way; both critically (it's his most well-received film), commercially (its $293 million domestic gross is something like $70 million higher than his next-best, Signs), and award-a-ly (a word I just made up), being nominated for Best Picture and Best Director and all (neither has happened to his films since).

So...yeah. It's not really close.

Yes yoda your right. I thought of Unbreakable more of a success than it really was. Although it didn't make a lot of money to be a block buster hit, I did enjoy it.

On that, how much does a movie have to make to be considered a big hit? I'm sure making 3times of the cost it took to make the movie can be considered.

Do you know anything about the script being stolen for signs? I'm not sure where I heard it from, but from his recent movies he wrote, I can kinda see where that rumor could be true.

If you mean the script for The Sixth Sense, I had heard that an author was claiming some similarity with some story of their own. This sounded pretty standard; we've heard the same thing about Harry Potter, for example. The broad strokes of the story are so simple that I'd bet it's just a coincidence, really. It's definitely the kind of idea people could easily come up with independent of one another. Anyway, I don't think it's found much legal footing.

King of Couch Potatoes
I have lost all faith in Shyamalan. And now he's got another movie coming out, that's going to be a vehicle for Jayden Smith no less. This guy really needs to stop.

Yes, i guess you're right. Maybe i will get to watch those too.
Thanks for the recommendations.
