Horror Movie HoF

Tools

I've seen many many horror movies, and when I was younger it was especially "the thing" to watch. It's just harder for me to get surprised or impressed by a horror film (as any other film really, since I've pretty much expanded my knowledge in every genre).

I guess some of the clichés are acceptable and the soundtrack was just a minor complaint, but my main problem was, to me, everything was so predictable. I was just like "now he hides there" "now he pops up there" "now this probably happens" and "this is probably how it'll end".

If you feel like that through an entire movie, together with the previously mentioned flaws, you obivously have a hard time enjoying it fully - and I had! but I can totally see others like it, it just felt like your average forgettable horror film to me I guess...

You're Next

This is my second viewing of this movie; the first time, I thought it was ok, but it left me completely underwhelmed. I thought that I would like it even less this time, so I made a conscious effort not to be too analytical about it, but rather just enjoy the ride.

In general, I agree with everything that MovieMeditation and Captain Spaulding said in their write-ups. It is most definitely cliched with not much new to offer. However, when it comes to horror movies, I am generally easy to please when it comes to cheap thrills. On average, this is a kind of horror movie that appeals to me. I think that you basically know what you're getting when you go into this movie, and I think it delivers fairly well. The big plus for me is the cast, not the performances, but the fact that it's adults rather than teens playing the parts. With the victims being a large family, with a few girlfriends thrown in, the carnage means a little more. I find that loved ones watching each other being slaughtered adds a disturbing emotional element to the mix. Disturbing equals effective for me, although I think it would've been even more so if the movie as a whole would've been more mature. The movie is pretty well made, and I think the twist was suitable. I enjoyed it much more the 2nd time around, and I give it a very strong

I've seen plenty of horror films too, and I thought You're Next had enough twists and turns to justify it's existence. I'm a fan.

You're Next doesn't try to offer anything new and I found the cliched elements added to the fun. It felt like Scream to me which pointed out cliches in horror films, then did those exact cliches. This film was no different in my opinion, just not as "on the nose".

The deaths in my opinion were creative enough and I thought the 'spin' on the head of having the one female be a "survivalist" was unique enough to make the film different. I'm surprised the soundtrack was an annoyance to some, I loved it. I also loved the idea of having just that one song play over and over...."Looking For The Magic". I downloaded it immediately after.

I was hoping for a bit more of a positive reaction to the film, but I'm not complaining.

Suspect's Reviews

My thoughts on the nominations I've seen - not including Sexy's because there is zero chance that he will actually watch the others so that movie will be removed anyway

Audition

One of the first Japanese horror films that I watched and possibly my first Miike movie. I loved how it went along as a romance for much of the movie ... until it turned completely crazy. I've now watched seven of Miike's movies and this is still my favourite.

The Haunting

Watched this a couple of months ago and liked it. In fact, compared to the other film I've seen by this director, this was a masterpiece Unfortunately it was let down a bit by some of the acting IMO ... but that's pretty common in horror movies.

May

Watched this yesterday and liked it quite a lot. Felt like a cross between Carrie and Frankenstein and the performances from most of the cast were good. Even scared me a couple of times

Nosferatu the Vampyre

Werner Herzog is one of my favourite directors and this film shows why - like many of his films it is filled with moments of greatness. Whether it be the visuals, the creepy atmosphere, the beautiful Isabelle Adjani or the amazing Klaus Kinski in one of the best performances I've ever seen - they all add up to this being one of the best horror movies ever.

Possession

More Isabelle Adjani One of the better horror films I've seen ... in a WTF? kind of way. I always find it interesting watching Sam Neill in his early horror film roles - he's really such an ordinary looking guy and became such a mainstream actor so his casting in those roles now seems somewhat odd.

The Ring

One of the few Japanese horror remakes that was better than the original. Has some really scary moments.

Rosemary's Baby

A classic and the best of the six Polanski films I've seen.

Suspiria

This is the only one of the films I've already seen that I will re-watch - because I absolutely hated it. Terrible acting, bad script, silly story, awful music ... the list goes on. But, I think I mentioned to Justin in another thread that I will give it another go one day and this looks like the right time. I've since watched a few other Argento films and didn't like them much either so not too confident my opinion will change but we'll see ...

A Tale of Two Sisters

I think this was the first film of Kim's I saw - I've since watched four others. I wouldn't say he is one of my favourite Korean directors but I really liked this and I Saw the Devil. Glad to see one of those films nominated because horror fans should see them.

Chappie doesn't like the real world
I completely agree that The Ring is better than Ringu. I still like Ringu, but the performances are better in The Ring and it's scarier as well.

Master of My Domain
I'll try out You're Next sometime today since its the current big thing I guess lol

Currently typing this at the edge of a ski slope.

I haven't seen it yet, but I am very forgiving of horror if it doesn't break any new ground. There are some horror movies that are unique and original that I really enjoy, but sometimes I feel like the tried and true is the better way to go with movies. A ghost a dark shadowy house or a knife wielding maniac is sometimes all a movie needs and sometimes all I want.

They are horror movies with complex stories that work really well, but the K.I.S.S method of horror generally generates the best results, for me at least.

It's not that I don't want to watch -- it's that I don't know where to ... find them. I don't have Netflix and I don't want to buy all of these movies, so I just ... look for them. And so far, no luck.

And it's partly that I don't want to watch, too. Most of them don't interest me.

Master of My Domain
Seeing what other people are writing maybe it would have been better to nominate I Saw the Devil... oh well.

The Ring

(Gore Verbinksi)

I remember seeing this film in the theatre and the girls near me screaming their heads off in fright towards the famous climax. It was a good theatre experience for me and despite the film not exactly matching up with repeat viewings, still manages to send a chill or two down a spin.

Naomi Watts is looking for a tape that supposedly kills the viewer 7 days after they watch it. The voice on the other end of the phone still sends chills down my spine. Verbinski's first big hit which really got his career moving. He knew that slowly building tension and dread is what would drive the film. The mystery behind it would draw people in. Then attack them with an insane final act just when you think everything is safe. A good combo that really works for this film.

I would love the watch the original, which is probably scarier given the non-hollywood budget and slickness, but as it stands, The Ring is one of the best horror films out there. I can't say too much for the sequels that Hollywood spit out afterwards. But isn't that always the case with horror films in Hollywood?

A good remake in the horror genre is hard to do. I feel as though they managed to do this one right.

A Tale of Two Sisters

Despite the fact that this director made one of my favorite movies(I Saw the Devil), I wasn't expecting to like this movie too much. I've been a big horror fan since I was little, but I really don't get scared anymore. I now tend to go to horror for thrills and depravity.

This is a movie that should be watched as blindly as possible; the less you know about the story, the better. Like I said, I don't really get scared by these movies anymore, but I felt a little something in this one. In fact, I think I'd at least put this into the discussion of the all time scariest movies. It is very effective, well made, and the acting is exceptional. My personal rating for this movie is
, but I feel that is not doing this movie justice. It is very good.

8 down, 8 to go for me.

I thought of that, but I consider it to be more of a thriller than horror.

I will say though, I had like 20 horror films I wanted to nominate and had to narrow it down, which was a bitch to do.
I had this problem, too.
Should have nominated Blood Feast or Alice, Sweet Alice or something.
Like you, I thought of both of these, too.
Honeykid may also not finish. He doesn't watch 15 movies in a year sometimes, much less 15 in 15 weeks
Thankfully I've seen six or seven of them, so that'll ease the burden.

Personally, I think you picked the wrong one. Although I hear it's on Youtube, so, we'll see.
