Who is the most overrated director?

Re: Who is the most overrated director?
Hitchcock is generally a considered a great craftsman than a great artist. The hype isn't about profundity, it's about technical innovation.

Re: Funny Games and Michael Haneke in general...
I'm pretty sure those unconventionally long takes of his are there to disengage you with the material, and his breaking the fourth wall is obviously not a generic thriller device either. He wants you...

Re: Funny Games and Michael Haneke in general...
I found Funny Games rather meh. There's something rather condescending about a film director who feels he's in a position to chastise his audience for sitting through a violent film.

Re: Sedai, Pyro Tramp and all the others who doubted Christopher Nolan
Are you familiar with the term "show, don't tell"? I'll agree that The Dark Knight was a good film, but Nolan does very little 'telling', as he should do. To tell the story rather than show it is...

Re: Political references In Mainstream cinema.
All films have political references, often unintended ones. Films don't exist in a vacuum, they are products of their time and they all reflect the collective social conciousness of that time. The...

Re: DVD Aficionado
I definitely like the old design more (the floating menu on the side is especially terrible) but it's not bothering me that much. I actually quite like how they split the collection up into different...

Re: Bean: The New Chaplin?
Chaplin too.
While it's not surprising people are comparing them, Bean would obviously still never be as considered as great as Chaplin and Tati were. City Lights isn't considered a classic just...

Re: Formalism vs. Realism vs. Surrealism
I wouldn't call Science of Sleep a work of surrealism, it's more of a film that's quite surreal. I mean, Un Chien Andalou is surrealism, Meshes of the Afternoon is surrealism, and some of the works...

I think comparing him to Tati would make more sense. His new film is a homage to Mr. Hulot's Holiday, after all.

Re: INLAND EMPIRE (Lynch, 2006)
Like Mulholland Dr., it is attacking Hollywood. A recurring theme in this is prostitution. I think the overall meaning of the film is that Hollywood treats its stars like disposable, cheap whores....

Even though I didn't enjoy this much on the big screen (I found it overlong), I'm going to get the DVD and give it another chance.

Just because it was made in 'an entertainment industry' does not mean it has to be entertainment. 2001, while still a unique and original film, is not the only 'art film' in existence.
There are...
