User Tagging
 

So, this, like the individual movie pages, is something I've wanted to do for a long time: user tagging. Like this: @Yoda

Nobody really wanted this until a few years ago, but with the rise of social media people started to expect it. At one point I made a go of adding this functionality, but ran into some hurdles, and since nobody was actually beating down the door, I moved on to other things. But the other day one of our new users (thanks, @Little Devil!) asked about it, and I thought: why not give it another go? And this time it went a lot smoother.

So you can now just type @SomeUsername and it'll tag the user and they'll get a notification about it, like they would with a new message or reputation. The much bigger deal, however, is that this also happens when you quote people. This should be a lot more convenient than having to dig through threads to see who's replied, and to what.

There are some edge cases, like Little Devil above: because he has a space in his name, I had to use the MENTION tag, which works like you'd expect: [*MENTION][/MENTION*], without the asterisks. Or you can click the new Mention button on the editor: http://www.movieforums.com/community...es/mention.png to insert the code automatically.

You'll find a link to the Your Mentions page in the User CP, on the left.

Let me know if you guys run into any problems, or have any questions. :)

EDIT: if you'd rather not receive these notifications, just go to your Edit Options page. About halfway down, at the end of the Messaging and Notifications block, you'll see a "Block all notifications for quotes or tags?" option. Check that box, and you won't get any more notifications about being quoted or tagged.

At the moment, this option only suppresses them, so they'll still accumulate, in case you ever turn it back on. But I'll see about possibly turning them off so they only accumulate when not suppressed, and I'll also look into integrating this into the Ignore List.

Also, there's some advanced functionality here that allows people to be notified by email when this happens, too, if they want, and a few other things. We might get into that at some point, if anyone's interested, but I figured for now, let's just get the basics working. But speak up if you think this is something worth expanding.

I never used the [] tagger. I just typed in SC's name and it did it.

The code doesn't actually give you a mention. It just comes up because it has a profile, the same way it comes up when you mention yourself.

Won't matter the only thing that's getting a mention from it is the codes profile.

Yeah, i just checked. I had three the first one that you actually mentioned me and Yoda and Swan quoting my posts.

Is it possible that someone created an account (probably an alt) with the code as their name, and that's why there's a user profile with 3 posts linked to the mention?

That's less fun than a code randomly having a user profile, but more logical.

Maybe Sexy?

It was probably SC. One of his posts was a response to SC talking about how woman were sexy or something :laugh:

FYI, what I'd like for you guys to keep an eye out for most are the notifications. That system has a lot of moving parts. I'm pretty sure it's working fine, and behaving the same way it does with all other notifications, but let me know if you run into any issues there.

This is very handy. I find that digging posts where I wrote something and having to see if someone did leave a reply or not is a bit cumbersome.

If THE CODE's account is me, I don't remember making it. It sounds like it could be me. It's the kind of thing I could see myself doing. I just tried to log in to the account and couldn't get in.

I think it should be possible that all notifications like this could be turned off. Including the notification that you received rep. And post comments.

It's kinda like a quick intercom system. A way to get people to look at the thread you want them in.

This function is already being abused, I think that's a record.

so if you tag someone by quoting someone else who tagged them, will they get that notification?

for example, let's say i tag Dani8 in a post, and then someone quotes me, leaving the part where i tagged him in. would Dani get a notification for that one, too?

just curious... trying to find flaws :D

Good question, MsAsh. I was wondering this as well. I think it only notifies the person quoted.

That's a great question. I don't know! I would guess not, because most of this modification seems pretty well thought out (I've tweaked and added some things, but the core functionality was written by someone else). But if someone can test to confirm, that'd be great.

Yeah, the tagging is a nice improvement, but the quote notification thing is a big deal. Should've had that forever ago.

I think it should just be the one. As far as I can tell, all the really obvious potential abuses are accounted for.

One little quirk is that if someone quotes you AND tags you, it'll say you have two mentions but it'll only display one on the Mentions page. That's a pretty minor issue, but I might try to fix it anyway.

Nope. We're good. Works as you'd hope: no superfluous mentions just because you happened to be in someone else's quote.

I tried it in a Profile Comment and it didn't work.

One thing i think people will have to learn to avoid is pointless quoting. Like quoting a comment right above you that was just posted as the mentions for that will get quickly annoying.

Sometimes, I'm sure that will be, though other times the user might not know to check back unless they do. Hopefully, people will use their judgment.

I will say that, if this gets to become annoying (and even if it doesn't), I'll make sure people can opt-out one way or another.

Well, is that really needless? You're responding to them, and you want them to see it.

I think the only time it would be needless is if you quote someone and then say something that's not address to them at all. Not sure how often that happens, though.

You hadn't posted when i quoted him. What i meant is when someone posted and a minute later you quote them when they were the post right above you. I find that pointless.

We are derailing already, but you know how often I think I am directly replying to someone so I don't quote and then someone else has replied before me. It happens to me a ton. A lot more when I first became a member, but still a lot.

I don't follow. Unless you're saying someone who just posted is likely to still be "on" the thread and just sitting on the thread refreshing it. I dunno how common that is, though if it is common, it would only be common because we didn't have something like this, yeah?

Do you know what I seriously want? Even though I'm terrible at keeping my profile looking all decorated and pretty.

I want music in our profiles. I want someone to visit my profile and a song starts playing.

We'll find out. I think the movie pages are pretty necessary. I think being notified when quoted is pretty necessary. Clubs and the tagging (IE: tagging without a quote), maybe not, but we'll find out as people use them.

A lot of things I threw together on a whim have ended up becoming very important, and a lot of things I was very excited about have gone relatively unused. You never really know, so the best thing I can do is put this stuff in front of you guys so we can discover what's useful and what isn't. And if something never gets used, we can always nix it.

An apt metaphor, in part because anyone who still loves the original Oreos can get them and ignore the new ones. I think/hope most of these new features are like that, in that people's core experience can stay pretty similar if they want it to.
