The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

Here ya' go.

Per usual, I was trying to get everything inputted as quickly as possible, so let me know ASAP if anything looks off or anything does't work.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

Man, this is just a great year. La La Land and Manchester by the Sea are.going to be absolute favorites of mine for years to come.

Movie Max 01-24-17 11:29 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

This looks like it would be fun. There is only one problem, I haven't seen a single one of these movies. Wow! Not even the $50 Cineplex gift card I have sitting here since Christmas, can motivate me to see any of these in the theatre. Hell or High Water I can wait for. I may see Fences at some point in time. That Andrew Garfield double feature is a bit much, but, I'll eventually watch because of Neeson and Gibson. That's it for me, very little interest and no urgency.

Yoda 01-24-17 11:34 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

The Picks Pool is more about guessing right than picking favorites, so that's not a big problem. Just a fun little way to add some competition to the live chat.

Anyway, still a month until the ceremony, and people can make or update their picks any time between now and then.

Movie Max 01-24-17 11:37 AM

First thing I looked for was to see if The Witch got costume design or set design. It didn't. This is why the Oscars suck.

Bump! Got a good number of picks in already, but I'll be bump-de-bumpin' this thread a lot over the next few weeks. And there'll be lots of annoying header notifications and stuff, too, so just give in now and you won't have to see most of it.

Bump! Don't forget to make those picks. It's quick and easy, and just guessing is totally fine, too:

I haven't seen any of the nominees yet, and I doubt I'll have time to watch most of them before the deadline for Oscar picks, but I'll try to make some educated guesses based on what I've read about the movies.

BTW, when is the deadline for Oscar picks?

Camo 02-25-17 01:26 AM

Finalized my Oscar picks. For a few of them all three Short Categories, and one or two others i used some random sites predictions coz i didn't have the slightest clue. My results so far have been: 12 in 2013, 13 in 2014, couldn't find what i got last year but i think it was 15 or 16. Hilariously i was looking at last years transcript to see if i had said how much i got last year but gave up quickly, i did find this on the last page however:

OscarBot: Casey Affleck has won Best Picture. 4% of users got it right.
Yoda has joined the chat.
OscarBot: La La Land has won Best Picture. 73% of users got it right.
OscarBot: Denzel Washington has won Best Actor. 20% of users got it right.
OscarBot: Mahershala Ali has won Best Supporting Actor. 71% of users got it right.

http://www.movieforums.com/community...t.php?&page=40

Was that a test or something @Yoda?

Iroquois 02-26-17 08:06 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

Did mine. Went for the most "predictable" picks possible except some guesswork for the shorts and throwing in "How Far I'll Go" as a possible Best Song even though it could very well go to one of the La La Land songs. Actually kind of hoping I'm wrong about a bunch of them, though not enough to vote for them. I could use another Ex Machina moment or two.

seanc 02-26-17 08:38 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

I have went 8, 17, 9, 16. If I remember my fifth grade pattern building properly, 10 will be my score this year.

Iroquois 02-26-17 08:42 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

2010 - 14, 2011 - N/A, 2012 - N/A, 2013 - 10, 2014 - 13, 2015 - 12, 2016 - 16.

Yeah, I can't pick out any pattern here. I guess it could be 11 or 15.

seanc 02-26-17 08:45 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

I usually guess on the shorts but I actually looked up the favorites. So, I just edited. We will see if it helps. I hope La La Land does as well as expected or I'm up the creek.

Same here. I have it winning 10, should've probably thrown a few curveballs but i'm just sticking with what i have.

I had to guess on some since there are a few I haven't seen...

What I am absolutely sure of..

Best picture - Moonlight
Best actor - Andrew Garfield
Best visual effects - Deepwater Horizon

I haven't seen the movie. I could be totally wrong. But my hunch is La La Land won't win Best Picture and maybe not much else.

Tomorrow morning, everyone will go - WTF??? Why didn't La La Land win big?!

Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge or Manchester by the Sea -- one of those movies wins Best Picture, I think.

You should be... I thought the visual effects on Deepwater Horizon were fantastic and it's not something I normally pick up on.. it really made the film, the scene towards the end when they are all on the boat and the deepwater is ablaze in the background casting an eerie light on everything was beautiful.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it is going to win either. My prediction is that it will go to Moonlight. And I think it may win actress (not that I think she deserves it more than Ryan Gosling but he has a tougher competition in his category), director, music (score and song), and, possibly, cinematography.

I am really unsure about Best Actor. I think it might go to Denzel (after all, he also won the Tony for this - forgetting the fact that he won the SAG). I am leaning towards him. I wouldn't mind seeing Casey Affleck win (I still say he should've won for The Assassination of Jesse James). Part of me feels that if Denzel had been nominated for Director, he may have gotten that (an award that I think he would actually prefer) and Casey Affleck would definitely get Actor then.

Sounds like you might be thinking what I've been thinking -- that the black movie and the black actors will get rewarded this time, thanks to the protests of people like Jada Pinkett Smith.

I didn't do as well as I thought I would. I thought about changing my Best Actor prediction closer to the award ceremony, but then I just didn't bother. There was always the chance that my original prediction would've gotten it.

A couple stats about last night's winners:

The 10% that correctly predicted Moonlight would win is the lowest total we've ever had for the Best Picture winner. The next-lowest is 25%, which was Spotlight last year.

Justin Hurwitz's win for Best Score, for La La Land, was predicted by 85% of people. That's not a record, but it's close: the record is 88%, by both DiCaprio for The Revenant and Gravity for Best Visual Effects.

Camo 02-27-17 11:55 AM

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open

There's been a weird trend in the recent Oscars of Best Director and Best Picture going to different movies. I'm sure Holden has pointed it out before.

TheUsualSuspect 02-27-17 03:03 PM

First time two black nominees won Best Supporting awards in the same ceremony; in general, first time an Oscar ceremony featured more than 3 black winners
First time in almost twenty years that all acting winners are American
First time in 10 years that the Best Actor nominee who won the SAG did not win the Oscar (Washington/Affleck)
First time a Muslim actor won an Oscar (Ali)
First time in almost 20 years that all acting awards went to people playing fictional people
First time a movie with 14 nominations failed to win Best Picture
First time a Potter movie won an Academy Award
First time a DC Universe movie won an Academy Award
First time a living person was included in the "In Memoriam" Segment
First time Kevin O'Connell won an Oscar after 21 nominations (Hacksaw Ridge, Sound Mixing)
First time the wrong Best Picture winner was announced
First time Netflix (White Helmets) and Amazon (Manchester By the Sea) films won Oscars
