The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Here ya' go.
Per usual, I was trying to get everything inputted as quickly as possible, so let me know ASAP if anything looks off or anything does't work. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Man, this is just a great year. La La Land and Manchester by the Sea are.going to be absolute favorites of mine for years to come.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
This looks like it would be fun. There is only one problem, I haven't seen a single one of these movies. Wow! Not even the $50 Cineplex gift card I have sitting here since Christmas, can motivate me to see any of these in the theatre. Hell or High Water I can wait for. I may see Fences at some point in time. That Andrew Garfield double feature is a bit much, but, I'll eventually watch because of Neeson and Gibson. That's it for me, very little interest and no urgency.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
The Picks Pool is more about guessing right than picking favorites, so that's not a big problem. Just a fun little way to add some competition to the live chat.
Anyway, still a month until the ceremony, and people can make or update their picks any time between now and then. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Ok, I can guess a few.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Oh, there is another page? My mistake, I saw 13 Hours.:D
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Done and dusted - completely blind as per :)
Anything above last is a bonus :D |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
First thing I looked for was to see if The Witch got costume design or set design. It didn't. This is why the Oscars suck.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
F*CKING WIN MICA LEVIIIIIIIIII
|
Bump! Got a good number of picks in already, but I'll be bump-de-bumpin' this thread a lot over the next few weeks. And there'll be lots of annoying header notifications and stuff, too, so just give in now and you won't have to see most of it.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Bump! Don't forget to make those picks. It's quick and easy, and just guessing is totally fine, too:

Sorry for using the new tagging feature to bug some of you about your Oscar picks, but it just seems like such an effective way to go about it. :D

Ugh leave me alone ya green toad.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
NEVER. In fact, next week we're going to have a giant reminder on the header of every page. Just give in now and you won't even have to look at it. It's just the easiest way.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Sorry, I know very little about Star Trek. Had to look that one up.
Yeah, I can live with that.:yup: |
@Yoda
Cool new feature. Good for mass spamming. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Excuse me for wanting to wait until the last minute.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Not a problem, just wasn't sure who was doing that and who had forgotten.

BTW, when is the deadline for Oscar picks? |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
About a half-hour before the show.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
The show is the 28th. So, about a half hour before sometime on the 28th February.

The 28th? I thought the Oscars are on the 26th. |

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
As usual, I expect to come in 1000000000th place.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Think i was like 89th out of 172 once. Good year.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Okay, big annoying banner on the header of each page imploring you to make your picks. Please do it! It's fun and easy, I promise. And that big banner magically vanishes when you do!
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Well that was a lot more fun than I expected, and I love the tracking thingy to keep an eye on my picks because all of mine are blind guesses based on the academy politics so I will forget by monday. Let the games begin.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Yeah, really looking forward to the chat. Could be a record turnout this year. Hope you'll pop in: it really does make the ceremony a lot more entertaining.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
It's monday morning for us I think so I'll be waxing lyrical, Yods.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Is there any way to see your picks after you've picked them (in case you want to change)
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Yup. Just click on the big Oscar statue in the header.
More general Oscar stuff here, BTW; www.movieforums.com/oscars |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Done. Thanks Yoda
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Any insider info from 'reputable sources' on how the academy panel operates?
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Yup, we go all into that in the Oscar preview podcast.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
ah thanks champ. That was the day my computer was whining from the heatwave and I never got around to listening. Will do now.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Cool, hope you like it. :)
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
The intro is very pro, guys.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Who's the fast talker? I'm guessing Yodels (first guy to talk)

Second (going on memory) is Holden Pike, third is mark f. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
No it's great. Very upbeat. Aussies are fast talkers so I like it.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
LOL I'm going to give a running commentary as I listen if I;m not careful. Love the discussion about LLL.
Ok that's enough. I'll stop HJing. Very good speakers, lads. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Did whatshisface claim his prize last year? I remember I was tied for first but joeblowidontknow submitted his picks faster.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Yeah. It was cinemajack, and he asked for a copy of Steve Jobs.

Finalized my Oscar picks. For a few of them all three Short Categories, and one or two others i used some random sites predictions coz i didn't have the slightest clue. My results so far have been: 12 in 2013, 13 in 2014, couldn't find what i got last year but i think it was 15 or 16. Hilariously i was looking at last years transcript to see if i had said how much i got last year but gave up quickly, i did find this on the last page however:
OscarBot: Casey Affleck has won Best Picture. 4% of users got it right. Yoda has joined the chat. OscarBot: La La Land has won Best Picture. 73% of users got it right. OscarBot: Denzel Washington has won Best Actor. 20% of users got it right. OscarBot: Mahershala Ali has won Best Supporting Actor. 71% of users got it right. http://www.movieforums.com/community...t.php?&page=40 Was that a test or something @Yoda? |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Maybe. :suspicious:
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
BTW, you can check your previous scores on each of the leaderboards, found on the main Oscars page.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Thanks. Last year i got 14 meaning i've improved by one every year, 15 here i come
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Did mine. Went for the most "predictable" picks possible except some guesswork for the shorts and throwing in "How Far I'll Go" as a possible Best Song even though it could very well go to one of the La La Land songs. Actually kind of hoping I'm wrong about a bunch of them, though not enough to vote for them. I could use another Ex Machina moment or two.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I have went 8, 17, 9, 16. If I remember my fifth grade pattern building properly, 10 will be my score this year.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
2010 - 14, 2011 - N/A, 2012 - N/A, 2013 - 10, 2014 - 13, 2015 - 12, 2016 - 16.
Yeah, I can't pick out any pattern here. I guess it could be 11 or 15. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I usually guess on the shorts but I actually looked up the favorites. So, I just edited. We will see if it helps. I hope La La Land does as well as expected or I'm up the creek.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I had to guess on some since there are a few I haven't seen...
What I am absolutely sure of.. Best picture - Moonlight Best actor - Andrew Garfield Best visual effects - Deepwater Horizon |

No I didnt. I gave it same as you and sound to Arrival |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I'd bet against all three. Least sure about effects, though.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
La La for 8 I say.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I haven't seen the movie. I could be totally wrong. But my hunch is La La Land won't win Best Picture and maybe not much else.
Tomorrow morning, everyone will go - WTF??? Why didn't La La Land win big?! Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge or Manchester by the Sea -- one of those movies wins Best Picture, I think. |

Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge or Manchester by the Sea -- one of those movies wins Best Picture, I think. I am really unsure about Best Actor. I think it might go to Denzel (after all, he also won the Tony for this - forgetting the fact that he won the SAG). I am leaning towards him. I wouldn't mind seeing Casey Affleck win (I still say he should've won for The Assassination of Jesse James). Part of me feels that if Denzel had been nominated for Director, he may have gotten that (an award that I think he would actually prefer) and Casey Affleck would definitely get Actor then. |

If i win i'm getting Yoda to send @Miss Vicky a Wes Anderson film.

There's an idea. Instead of betting with money... the loser has to watch something they wouldn't like. |

Hope Denzel doesn't win. I've not seen Fences, i'm sure he was great but he's already won two and Casey was excellent.
|

When does the ceremony start and when does the chat open?

I think this is the year I get more than 15 right!

Actually someone really should ask Wes to sign a picture of PTA or vice-versa. |

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Well, I'll try to check all the data tomorrow, but I think it's probably right as-is. Looks like The UsualSuspect won, after losing last year on a tiebreak. Congrats, Matt!

Wait, what? Moonlight won?
|
Congrats Suspect
I got 16/24, i've did better each year. Really surprised i got that much i was 2/6 at one point and thought this was going to be my worst year yet. Damn, just remembered i changed Casey to Denzel at the last minute . Think i just got paranoid with Denzels other wins haha. |
Congrats to TUS for winning!
I got every one of the technical awards wrong, except for Best Editing. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
16/24, though given how the highest total was 19/24 this actually seems like a better result than usual.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Congrats to TUS: Had a tough luck tiebreaker loss last year, but took it home this year. Contact me when you know what movie you want, or if you want a mug, or whatnot. Good job!
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I think we need a recount though. La La Land won best pic, didn't you notice?
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
That was just the popular vote.

Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
La La Land is my best picture!
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
A couple stats about last night's winners:
The 10% that correctly predicted Moonlight would win is the lowest total we've ever had for the Best Picture winner. The next-lowest is 25%, which was Spotlight last year. Justin Hurwitz's win for Best Score, for La La Land, was predicted by 85% of people. That's not a record, but it's close: the record is 88%, by both DiCaprio for The Revenant and Gravity for Best Visual Effects. |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
There's been a weird trend in the recent Oscars of Best Director and Best Picture going to different movies. I'm sure Holden has pointed it out before.
|
First time two black nominees won Best Supporting awards in the same ceremony; in general, first time an Oscar ceremony featured more than 3 black winners
First time in almost twenty years that all acting winners are American First time in 10 years that the Best Actor nominee who won the SAG did not win the Oscar (Washington/Affleck) First time a Muslim actor won an Oscar (Ali) First time in almost 20 years that all acting awards went to people playing fictional people First time a movie with 14 nominations failed to win Best Picture First time a Potter movie won an Academy Award First time a DC Universe movie won an Academy Award First time a living person was included in the "In Memoriam" Segment First time Kevin O'Connell won an Oscar after 21 nominations (Hacksaw Ridge, Sound Mixing) First time the wrong Best Picture winner was announced First time Netflix (White Helmets) and Amazon (Manchester By the Sea) films won Oscars |
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
I didn't even know White Helmets was from Netflix. Watching it soon.
|
Re: The 2017 Oscar Picks Pool is Open
Let me know what you think, Cam. I;m a big fan of docos but would like to know how much raw footage of death and injry. Getting a bit soft these days.
