A Song For October
Same as was done in previous tournaments of this type.....
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'. Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point). The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month. Songs that made it to previous 'finals' are ineligible -
list here
Simples but if any relevant questions just ask. |
Re: A Song For October
Thread up plenty early so @Yoda can perhaps clear a little space in his diary for a round or three of this.....

Sorry for the delay! Yeah, I think I can manage, if someone can give me a capsule summary of how this works/what's required of me and all that.

Basically, each person who joins nominates one song per round. (The nominated song can't be a previous tournament winner, (listed in the first post of this thread), and it can't be longer than 10 minutes.) When the nominations for the round close, the host (@Chypmunk;) posts all of the nominations. Everyone who joined listens to all of the nominations, and ranks them in order from their favorite to their least favorite. (We post our lists in the thread.) While waiting for everyone to vote, anyone who wants to join the next round, posts their nomination for the next round. Then the host calculates the results and announces the winner of the round. The host then posts the next round, and we continue with rounds until the end of the month. (You can join as many or as few rounds as you want, but you can only vote in the rounds that you nominate a song, and in the final round if you've nominated a song in any round of the tournament.) The last round is all of this tournament's rounds winners. We rank these songs, and then the tournament winner is announced. Then we all wait patiently for the next tournament. :) |

Re: A Song For October
So, to start, I literally just pick one song, any song, and post it here? No theme or anything, just anything I either like or (probably better) think others might like?

Re: A Song For October

Thanks, @Captain Spaulding for the reference. I miss everything.
So I've thought long and hard on the the subject of what tracks to sacrifice up to the MOFO music gawds that are never pleased with my offerings. This month? I say screw it. I'll throw my own themed party this time around, and the celebration is a selection of soundtracks from the 80s. Right out of the gate, Real Life... https://media1.tenor.com/images/84c5...affd/tenor.gif Inspired by a recently watched (and fondly remembered) B-movie story of a local, small town boy fighting all odds against big corporation and sellout commercialism in the form of BMX freestyle, I nominate Real Life - Send me an Angel, from the 1986 movie, Rad. This movie taught me that I will never be coordinated enough to even pull off a wheelie, or have enough money to buy a BMX with pegs or proper rotor. This song and music sequence within the movie taught me of love, the lengths one must go to earn it, and the devastating cold reality of heartache and loss when Cru races off into the night before Christian is able to push through the student crowd to ask his name. Lori Loughlin? I never cared that you bribed you kid's way into college. I still love you. |

Re: A Song For October

Let's do this. No noisy blowers in the apartment before next week so I can actually listen to these. No promises I'll do every round.
R1 nomination: PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact |
Re: A Song For October
By all rights, Bowie probably should have been my first nom. I must admit that I did consider a track-by-track submission of the Labyrinth soundtrack album. I thought better of it, on reconsideration, as that would have been unfair to all other noms and would have most certainly defeated the purpose of the competition.

Re: A Song For October
John Anderson - Seminole Wind
If this one is blocked for anybody, I guess any alternative is fine. This one is just much better quality than most of the others, so I wanted those who could listen to it to have the best quality possible. I just nominated the song that's been stuck in my head for the past three weeks. |

For anyone working with "www" type song links (as opposed to the "youtu.be" variety) that doesn't know how to make a song link external (rather than imbedding the video):
External linking is easy:I'd appreciate if those using "www" type links would try to do the above as it just makes it that little bit easier for the lazy dog that is otherwise known as myself ;) Thanks, Chyp |
Here are the results of the 'lazy dog' jury......
Being down the list doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like it ..... quite a strong round imo. |
Dusty Springfield - Spooky - Yes, I'm theming again. Obvious from the start this time. :D
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified - It's a nice pastiche? Affectionate tribute? I don't know, but I like it. Girlschool - Race with the Devil - Quality from a band which doesn't get listened to as often as it should. toconoma - relive - A minute in and I'm liking this. If it doesn't outstay its welcome expect to see this nearer the top than the bottom. Real Life - Send me an Angel - 80's euro pop stylee? Yes please. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - For a UK F1 fan, this is always going to do well. Unless I find lots of new songs I really like here I can't see this not doing well for me this round. Toto - Rosanna - Classic. But suffers when it's not the chorus. O. Children - Ruins - Very 80's goth. Not exactly my thing, but not bad. Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens - This is pretty pleasant. Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream - It's Joe Cocker. It sounds like Joe Cocker. It's ok and that's about it really. Aseul - Fisher - On another day I think this would've done better with me. Today is not that day though. John Anderson - Seminole Wind § (alt vsn if needed) - At least it's not last. Though that may upset you. :D PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact - Too much too long today. |

Will rank after work this evening.
|
1 Toto - Rosanna - Putting this is first to fly in the face of the Toto haters. Sure, they bring the cheese, but when you round up all the band members, including their work with other projects, they have over 200 Grammy nominations. Also, this song is great.
2 Real Life - Send me an Angel - Excellent 80s synth pop. 3 Dusty Springfield - Spooky - Can't rank this any lower. Great stuff. 4 O. Children - Ruins - Above average goth track. I like it! 5 Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - Classic, but a bit overplayed at this point. 6 Aseul - Fisher - Reminds me of old-skool Orbital, which reminds me of my rave days, which reminds me of simpler, care-free times. 7 PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact - Some nasty riffs in this tune, but I ike the vocal in the verses, but the song is a bit too noisy and chaotic for my taste. Still good, though. 8 Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens - This is a good round, as even this far down the list, I still like this song quite a bit. 9 Girlschool - Race with the Devil - Rockin tune! 10 The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified - Cool, if really derivative, song. Still, it's one of those 90s bands that was acting like they were a 70s band. Kind of gimmicky. 11 Toconoma - Relive - Kind of fun, but I wasn't feeling it. 12 John Anderson - Seminole Wind - I just can't get around the twangy sounds of some country, and this is definitely one of those songs. Can't do it. 13 Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream - But I would still rather listen to the above country song than this, which is straight up elevator music to me. Sorry! I like other Cocker songs, but not this one. |
Re: A Song For October
Round 2 NOM
Obscura - Emergent Evolution Another extreme metal track for folks to send to the bottom of their lists. At least it has pretty sections... ;) |
Oh, we rank our own, too? I guess I can see that, though I'm pretty likely to rank my own really highly since I expect I'll usually be picking songs I already love. Maybe I'll mix it up with some weirder ones I don't love as much, then. Anyway!
A little too distracted to do write-ups on each but maybe next time. I really liked "Seminole Wind" though, the strings in that are great. And I agree, this was great, I can't imagine it's normal that even the ones towards the bottom of the list would be enjoyable. |

P.s. Don't forget the voting and nomination windows run concurrently so if you want to have a song in Round 2 you'll need to put one forward within the next 14 1/2 hours or so ;) |
1. John Anderson - Seminole Wind
2. Girlschool - Race with the Devil - Never heard of these girls before, but I'm all the way in. 3. The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified - This song was in some video game I used to play a long time ago, I just don't remember which one. It's a fun time. 4. Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens - so this is what Yoda listens to. 5. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - I've never been able to get into Fleetwood Mac for whatever reason. I should try listening to Rumours again. 6. PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact - Sometimes a problem with this type of music and vocals is that the music is so good that when they start doing their vocal stuff, it feels unnecessary. I'm still not sold on this style of vocals, so I was totally down to let that music ride before the fella piped in. It's also hilarious to read the lyrics, because they always say some silly stuff like "In a world of sin, of sh*t". I love the music, but do all these fellas have to be total edgelords? 7. Dusty Springfield - Spooky - The lyrics seem kinda dumb, but I'm digging the vibe. 8. O. Children - Ruins - This song reminds me of the "we have it at home meme". This is the we have Joy Division at home. 9. Aseul - Fisher - Probably not for me, but pretty good for something not for me. 10. toconoma - relive - Way too long. It has its moments, but I spent most of the time wanting it to end. 11. Toto - Rosanna - Times were different. 12. Real Life - Send me an Angel - Times were different. 13. Joe Cocker - Edge of a Dream - Not big on Joe Cocker |

Re: A Song For October
That's a good rule, vote and nominate at the same time. I didn't realize they were so close, but that makes sense.
|
Round 1
1. Girlschool - Race with the Devil (Boasts one of those killer riffs that desperately makes me wish I could play guitar. Until recently, I was mostly only familiar with Girlschool through their associations with Motorhead, but I've been really digging their catalogue lately. Their sound is tougher than most all-girl rock groups.) 2. O. Children - Ruins (Already knew within the first few seconds that I was going to dig this. One of the better goth tunes I've heard. Adding it to my playlist.) 3. Christine and the Queens - Doesn't Matter (A really well constructed pop song, sonically and lyrically. Surprised by how much I enjoyed this.) 4. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (Since both my parents are big fans of Fleetwood, I probably heard too much of their music growing up to the point that I eventually tuned them out, but no doubt this is an all-time great song.) 5. Dusty Springfield - Spooky (Such a sexy voice, and a seasonally appropriate nomination.) 6. Panzerfaust - The Faustian Pact (Feels more accessible than most black metal, but it was so long that I had to deal with two separate ad breaks. WTF, YouTube? Don't you know it's extremely dangerous to interrupt a demonic incantation?) 7. John Anderson - Seminole Wind (Hasn't Mr. Anderson received the memo? It's now "Washington Football Wind.") 8. Toto - Rosanna (Somehow the cheesiness feels like an attribute instead of a detriment. I find it hard not to smile while listening to this song, though it does start to overstay its welcome a bit by the end.) 9. Toconoma - Relive (Fun and danceable, but in the end it doesn't amount to more than a glorified jam session.) 10. Aseul - Fisher (Perfect background music, which I guess is a bit of a back-handed compliment.) 11. Real Life - Send Me an Angel (The chorus, particularly those soaring angelic background vocals, is what sinks this for me, which is strange since most of these 80's groups excelled at catchy choruses if nothing else.) 12. Joe Cocker - Edge of a Dream (I like Cocker's voice for the most part, but this just sounds so dated and corny, like a slow-motion montage in a made-for-television 80's romance.) 13. The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified (Sorta like listening to Greta Van Fleet when you could just listen to Led Zeppelin instead.) |
Round 2 nom:
Tami Neilson - You Were Mine |

Round 2 Nom (getting there)
As I'm currently working up my personal top 100, I found a lovely and sweet sleeper of a movie that I adored when I was a kid. It doesn't at all seem a likely pick, given the cast, but for some reason it connected with me deeply. Even now, when I watch it, I get all emotional. Jason Robards brought a bit of legitimacy to the cast and, surprisingly, played well on screen with.... Feldman. Yes. That Feldman. Corey Feldman, of the infamous two Coreys. In keeping with my 80's themed soundtrack nom, this submission sits nicely in a later scene of Dream a Little Dream. When I hear the opening guitar and that twangy little hammer-on on the fourth pick, I always have to pause to give it the respect and love this heart-breaking song is due. The movie is probably silly for most, and if you didn't grow up with it in the context of that decade, it may never reach you the way it did me. Still. It sits well with an excellent supporting soundtrack. Otis Redding - Dreams to Remember |

Not quite as strong as R1 but another pretty solid round imo and again being down the order doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't at least somewhat liked. |

Rounds been up for 6 1/2 hours and no votes from Yin yet so I guess it must be time for a reminder @ynwtf :D
|
Re: A Song For October
1 BB King - The Thrill is Gone - No fair putting songs like this in the tournament. This will bump my entry to #2 on my list.
2 Obscura - Emergent Evolution - Technical death metal that is still fairly catchy. 3 Otis Redding - Dreams to Remember - Should probably beat #2, but I will give that slot to the metal tracks today. 4 Tami Neilson - You Were Mine - Great set of pipes here. Not the most original in approach, but she kills it for what it is. 5 Foals - On the Luna - I have liked both of Yoda's tracks a lot so far. I dig this style of music quite a bit. 6 Pastel Ghost - Clouds - Love me some synths! 7 G-Schmitt - Cathedral Junky - Pretty smooth stuff. 8 LIVE - Lightning Crashes - I like this band a lot, and I saw them live multiple times in the 90s. Today, they don't resonate as much with me. 9 Pusha T ft. Kendrick Lamar - Nosetalgia - These guys are good rappers, but this track isn't one of the better ones I have heard from Pusha. 10 Focus - Hocus Pocus - Much prefer the Gary Hoey instrumental version that changes out the annoying yodeling for slick guitar lines. 11 Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Waiting for the End - Didn't do much for me, but I appreciate the Halloween theme. 12 Sadistik - Cotard's Syndrome - Wasn't feeling it. 13 Ricky Van Shelton - Somebody Lied - You all know where stuff like this places for me! As usual, I fully expect GB to plop my track down at 13, as well! Seems to be a theme for us. ;) |
