MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List

An event to bring our intellectually diverse crowd together under the same tent or big top if-you-will to welcome our newest site list. First we did the Millenium (Brodinski), followed by the 1990s (Harry Lime), the 1980s (Skepsis), the 1970s (Holden Pike), the 1960s (Daniel M), the 1950s (Rauldc14), Animation (Miss Vicky), the 1940s (SilentVamp), the 1930s (CitizenRules), and the Directed-By-Women (Iroquois). Correct any oversights as I believe we had a comics list (The Rodent) and an action one as well. And here we are. Here's to a STAB at bringing some of our former dignity back. For a run-through some Horror film history, here's a LINK to the vote entries thread. With so many terrific horror film devotees here, I fully wish that they all join me in entertaining our reading audience, as well as somewhat more newcomers to the genre who I welcome as well to perhaps open their eyes to another side of film with LOTS of variety to offer. Let not stigma cloud thy vision, there is horror to be had for everyone's taste as evidenced by Gbgoodies well-greeted attendance and possibly several others too. There may be hard-hitting horror as well, and I'd deny no one their film preference excitement, that's why we come here. Drop in when you can for an open thread to share ideas and thoughts on the films chosen by members. 63 members sent their votes. Almost all were full, 25 film strong lists. Films are given a fixed amount of points depending on the member's ranking. First place receives 25 points, second gets 24 points, by that pattern until the twenty-fifth place film gets 1 point. These are added up, and the top 100 films with the most points will appear here in the List thread. Ties are broken by counting how many times the movie was voted for. If the tie is still not broken, then the highest it placed on an individual list will break the tie. First we will reveal the 1-pointers, surprised by how many of them there are this time. Each day two films will be posted, beginning with later today when I will post entries #100 and #99. This will happen until we reach the top ten. Once the top ten is reached, each day only one film will be posted, until the final day where #1 and #2 are revealed. Do not give away your full list until the list is over, yet by all means feel free to share and discuss your entrees as their inductions are announced. And lastly, bring THE FUN with ya! Meet The Players Citizen Rules, The Rodent, ahwell, Jase, John-Connor, ScarletLion, Hey Fredrick, Steve Freeling, TokeZa, Sunomis, Holden Pike, rambond, Miss Vicky, rauldc14, Swan, pahaK, HashtagBrownies, Kaplan, the samoan lawyer, KeyserCorleone, Tugg, Yoda, Daniel M, Sedai, Nope1172, Thursday Next, Nemanja, gandalf26, Derek Vinyard, WorldFilmGeek, StanleyKubrick, honeykid, Mingusings, TYTD, cricket, gbgoodies, MovieMeditation, Dirk120, Okay, re93animator, Raven73, mark f, akatemple, Fabulous, MoreOrLess, edarsenal, Cynema De Bergerac, Siddon, jiraffejustin, cat_sidhe, CosmicRunaway, Nathaniel, 7thson, jal90, Frightened Inmate No.2, Guaporense, Yam12, BraedenG33, TheUsualSuspect, Iroquois, Nostromo87, Captain Spaulding, sarah f It Was Always You, Helen Check in. So excited for this! Good work, Nostro!
I haven't seen any of the first batch of one-pointers, though I do know a few of them. I hope mine will pop up, as I'm not sure if anybody else would pick that one. |

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Oh, we're starting already
About the first patch of one pointers. Split Second I couldn't even finish when I tried to rewatch it. I didn't like it at all. Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural was my own one pointer. It's actually a good film and I didn't have to move it too much up for that 25th position. Obviously wanted to have a one pointer people would recognize as "my kind of a film" :D Spring was pretty decent if I remember correctly. Not the best of its kind but I have a soft spot for these romantic horrors. Is The Snow Woman just an extended version of the Kwaidan section? I totally forgot to rewatch Kwaidan for this but I remember that story being the best one on it. I also have a vague idea that I've seen Dead Heat as a kid but can't say for sure. |

There were TWENTY-THREE 1-pointers http://i.ibb.co/FwCDgvQ/woozy.jpg I've been up all night. Going to put on a movie and fall asleep, hopefully I don't sleep the whole day so I can put together the posts for #100 and #99. SUCCESS
|
I've seen several of the 1 pointers and the only one I considered voting for was Stir of Echoes. I also quite liked House of the Devil. My own 1 pointer will be in the running for the top spot.
Looking awesome Nostro:) |
Alight, let's go with a quick walk-through... Hound of Baskervilles I've been wanting to see. I've heard quite a bit about that Spring one and I do have it on my watchlist. Might have seen Pitch Black once, I don't really remember it. I've seen the first sequel though.
Very interesting about Earthlings... of course I knew nothing not categorized as horror on IMDb would be counted, but I had to check for myself nontheless. :p I've seen it. It is horrifying... still eating meat though. Also because the places they showed were mostly some of the worst in the world. When I buy meat I buy organic and local. I don't buy that cheap stuff from foreign countries or whatever. So glad to see Stir of Echoes. Can't believe I'm happy about something Suspect did, but hey, how about that. ;) The film was a close contender for my list but I eventually cut it because I didn't have room for it and there were better movies. It's on my Top 50 horror list though... Only seen the first twoHellraiser movies. I kinda dug the first sequel. Don't know if I wanna bother with the rest though. Killer Klowns I've been wanting to see, but I gotta have some friends with me I think haha. Been meaning to watch House of the Devil. Manden der tænkte ting. Wauw, a Danish flick. Nominated by a fellow Dane! I haven't seen it but now I really want to. The Void was good for its special effects but I hoped for so much more. Child's Play 2 was decent fun. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
The House of the Devil almost made my list. It probably would have had I took the the time to re-watch it.

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Rest of the one pointers.
Pitch Black is pretty good scifi-horror and I'm little surprised it's only a one pointer. Sveto Mesto is OK remake of Viy. Way more bleak and brutal than the original. Hellraiser III I've seen but don't remember too much of. I'm under impression that pretty much all sequels after the first are more or less bad. Critters I saw as a kid. As a horror comedy it's not my kind of a film so haven't felt the urge to rewatch. I had so high hopes for The Void but it ended up being a disappointment. Nice practical effects though. I may have seen Child's Play 2 (I know I've seen more than one of those but it's been a long time) too. I don't think too highly of the series. Of the ones I haven't seen at least The House of the Devil and Stir of Echoes seem interesting enough to land on my watchlist. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Haven't seen any of them ... though a Jekyll&Hyde musical starring Hasselfoff should really be worth it!
|
Had to put The snow woman at my 25th. A very aesthetic story about elements of Japanese folklore, more about supernatural romance than truly horror, but with the unease of dealing with an essentially evil being.
Out of the other 1-pointers I've only watched Earthlings and let's just say I don't have a very good opinion of the moral integrity and legitimacy of the documentary and that I despise it quite a lot for how it presents its message. |
The 1-pointers I apparently haven't seen are A Holy Place (Sveto Mesto) (although I have seen numerous versions of Viy), The Snow Woman, Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical and Manden Der Tænkte Ting. I have researched them all previously so who knows? My own 25th ptck never could have been a 1-pointer though.
|
Pitch Black is on my fav sci-fi list and Stir of Echoes on my thriller list..
(I may have to correct that?) Critters is in my top 50.. https://66.media.tumblr.com/229f50d1...3vmpo1_400.gif |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Earthlings is the only film on my list that I find genuinely horrifying. I’m actually a former vegetarian, but a lot of what was in that film, including the most sickening footage, wasn’t even from the meat industry. I probably rate it higher than some of the others, but given its subject and the fact that it’s a documentary I knew it wouldn’t get any other votes.
|
I've seen 10 of the 1-pointers, and while I'm familiar with most of the others, there are a couple that I've never heard of (a Jekyll and Hyde musical with Hasselhoff? Morbidly curious about that one now).
I did consider Pitch Black for my list, but I'm a little tired of it now. I watched it multiple times one day when I was home sick on the couch, since the Movie Network kept cycling through the same couple of films. :suspicious: I remember being a fairly young kid and seeing a Critters marathon on tv late one evening. Mistaking it for Gremlins, I put it on. It may or may not have terrified me slightly. I watched the first two anyway haha.

I wanted to give it a shout-out on the 1-pointers list, since I was pretty certain that no one else was going to vote for it haha. I wish more producers would take a chance on smaller, creative projects like this, so I like to support them whenever I can. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Great job Nostromo!
And yeah I was pretty sure the only one I would have seen would be my one pointer. When a Stranger Calls (2006) is so goofy that I actually found it entertaining enough to make my list of 25. Admittedly the top 24 was easy and then after that it was a tough call for that last spot. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Wouldn't surprise me to see When a Stranger Calls on the list again.
|
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I briefly contemplated listing either Resident Evil: Retribution or Alien: Covenant purely for the sake of getting it into the one-pointers but I decided I'd take this list a little more seriously. We'll see if my actual #25 shows up on the final list, though.

I didn't think about the 1 pointer thing. That just happened to be what I had last on the list. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
They could all be sincere answers but it's always tempting to try gaming the system so an absolute underdog of a movie can end up getting even this tiny bit of recognition - of course, the gamble lies in whether or not you really are the only person to consider listing the movie in question (which, let's be honest, I probably could've done with my suggestions).

Considered Stir of Echoes from that group of 1 pointers but ended up cutting it early when I was narrowing down my potential list.
Pretty sure that Pitch Black is shown on constant repeat here. |

It is a tale of brother against brother and their love for a woman who lived with the dead. And it is also the tale of a young nurse, who never believed such things could happen. It's ****ING FANTASTICALLY HORRIBLE and also strangely beautiful. Highly disturbing and uncomfortable. Matt Dillon should have gotten an Oscar nod. Von Trier too. IMO. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I've seen I Walked with a Zombie ages ago. Don't really trust my judgment from so far back but I remember it being OK. Didn't manage to watch The House that Jack Built before this but it's quite high on my watchlist (Trier being the epitome of hit-and-miss it can be anything from garbage to greatness).

The House That Jack Built was on my list #11.
|
I watched I Walked With a Zombie for the 40's countdown. I liked it but haven't voted for it for anything.
I'm thinking The House that Jack Built will be the only movie that shows up that I haven't seen yet. That'll change as soon as it hits DVD and I can't wait. Killer Presentation:up: |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I like your formatting, but I wish you'd also list the director. The House That Jack Built just became way more intriguing finding out that Lars von Trier directed it.

Near Dark was my #9 and I am very surprised it did not make the cut. It was #29 on the first horror list that I didn't even participate in. My favorite vampire film. Return of the Living Dead was 1 of my last 5 cuts, and I'm also a fan of The Burning, Train to Busan, The Fog, Raw, and Creep. I've seen Theatre of Blood but hardly remember it, and I don't care for any of the Hellraiser sequels. |
Remember to private message me if you are interested in putting your own creative spin, on one movie of your choice, by becoming a Presenter. Four have committed, and there are six open positions remaining. The details will be negotiated in PM's.

There were 3 other eligible movies that would have made my top 10, except that they are not horror to me. I'm actually sort of glad it didn't make it. I just voted with my conscience the best I could.

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Surprised to see The House That Jack Built on here (and would it have been on here if it was released, say, 2 years ago?). I found it to be a lesser Trier film, despite probably being his most personal yet and therefore still interesting. And also, whatever Trier does is always more interesting than what usually comes out these days. Anyways, it was pretty good but didn’t bring a lot of new stuff to the table for the director. When it comes to Trier and horror I very much hope for Antichrist to pop up...
|
Yahoo! (I think) one of mine made the countdown...I Walked With A Zombie (1943)...Much better than Abbot and Costello Meet the Zombie:p...But I lost my list so I'm not sure. @Nostromo87 how about sending me my list back, please.:D

@Nostromo87, Great work putting this list together so fast. I think this is the fastest anyone has gotten the list started after the deadline for receiving lists. From the 1-pointers: I've seen Straight-Jacket (1964), and it's a good movie, but it didn't make my list. The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1959) is another good movie, but it's not one that I considered for my list. Dead Heat (1988) was on my watchlist for this countdown, but I ran out of time before getting a chance to watch it. :( I saw Stir Of Echoes (1999) in the theater many years ago, and I remembered liking it, so I rewatched it for this countdown. It was on my potential list for a while, but it got cut in the last few days. I'm surprised to see it here as a 1-pointer. I thought it would have made the countdown. I haven't seen the 2006 version of When A Stranger Calls, but I saw the original version many years ago, and I had planned to rewatch it for this countdown, but unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately ), I ran out of time for this movie too. Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical (2001) was my 1-pointer. I bought this DVD at a garage sale a few years ago because it piqued my curiosity, and I thought it was terrific. I didn't even think of this for the horror countdown because it doesn't have a horror feel to it, but I saw it on my shelf a few days ago when I was finalizing my list. I was pleasantly surprised to find that IMDB tagged it as "horror". (This is the TV Movie that I asked about in the other thread.) Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical was filmed live on stage in New York, so it has a Broadway show feel to it. I recommend it for anyone who likes musicals. |

Great job Nostro! Looking good. I had the same idea:p as you did with choosing a one pointer that would represent "my type of film" which for me was Straight-Jacket. Both GBgoodies and Miss Vicky's 1 pointer are "their type of films" too. I just thought that was interesting. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Shame Us came just after the deadline. I just saw the trailer and it looks phenomenal.

I Walked With A Zombie (1943) was on my watchlist, but after watching a few zombie movies, I realized that I didn't like most zombie movies, so I decided to focus more on movies that had a chance to make my list. I also wanted to watch The Fog (1980) for this countdown, but I couldn't find it before running out of time. :(

@Nostromo87, in addition to adding the director, could you also add the number of votes the movie received, and maybe where they ranked on the lists? It's nice to know how many people voted for the movies, and how high they placed on individual lists. |

@Nostromo87 any chance you could send me my list?
I have 2 saved in my files, and neither of them match Critters with 1 point and neither of them have The Fog included so I can't think what final list I actually sent in. Every time we do one of these countdowns, I always BCC my list back to myself when I send it to the host. That way I don't have to worry about losing it because there's a copy of it in my inbox. :) |

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Actually, I've just scanned through my messages and there's a copy of my list in there.
I genuinely thought I'd wiped my messages. |
I have seen both I Walked with a Zombie + and The House That Jack Built . I liked the former a lot more than the latter, and we discussed on the Danish forum svingninger.dk whether Lars von Trier should keep on making movies.
Interesting start so far and i am glad my Kubrickean horror sci-fi Manden der tænkte ting made the one pointer list. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Isn’t there an option to see sent messages. That’s what I look at when I reference my list.
Disappointed Return of the Living Dead didn’t make it. It started the zombie eating brains craze. Classic horror comedy that I rewatch every Halloween. |

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I didn't see the first two but now I wish The Fog was 4 spots higher on my list :(

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Already this list feels controversial to me. Really surprised that Near Dark didn't make it: that movie is amazingly badass. Also, I'm a little disappointed about Raw. I love that movie to bits, and that scene in the kitchen stills sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it.

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I can't wait to see the rest of the list !!!! :D
|
I'll check out The House that Jack Built when I get a chance. I was going to try and find it before the deadline of the 2018 Film Awards, but kind of forgot about it. I think I saw parts of I Walked With a Zombie when it was on tv once, but definitely not the entire thing.
Out of the films that didn't quite make it, I considered Train to Busan, which I watched for the Countdown and rather enjoyed, even though I've been worn out on zombie films for a good few years now. I quite liked The Return of the Living Dead last time I saw it too, but it wasn't in the running for my list and I didn't feel like rewatching any more zombie films. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I just got back from seeing The House That Jack Built, which is definitely an early contender for the most surprising entry on the list. As with every LVT piece, I went in halfway-expecting to hate it but honestly did find it a lot more tolerable than expected. Haven't seen I Walked With A Zombie.
As for the also-rans... The Fog was my #23. As I said elsewhere, it was hard trying to figure out exactly which of the dozens of -level horrors I had on my shortlist would actually make the tail end of my ballot but I figured screw it Carpenter's my boy and gave it the edge. Maybe I could've swapped it out, but I don't feel any significant regret about it. Near Dark is also a for me but I ultimately didn't vote for it. I liked Train to Busan, Raw, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, and Kill List, but not enough to even consider voting for them. Theatre of Blood is so-so. My hot take is that Return of the Living Dead actually kinda sucks and, for all its little details that do work (banging main theme, somewhat impressive effects work), I've watched it twice and both times found it a largely tedious affair. Even the moments where it actually manages to nail a sense of creeping dread are undermined by the fact that it can't seem to make up its mind as to how much of a comedy it wants to be (and I don't find it that funny anyway). Haven't seen The Burning or Creep. P.S. Is it too late to volunteer for presenting anything where I end up being the "high voter" (assuming that's how it works)? |

Kill List I watched quite recently and it has its ups and downs. Vague to a point where it feels that even the filmmaker doesn't know the whats and whys. The Burning was a nom in B-movie HoF and it's pretty average teen slasher. Near Dark has got worse on every rewatch now but it's still OK. I really hate the ending though. The Fog is above average for sure but probably wouldn't fit even top-50 for me. I'm planning to watch Train to Busan at some point. Not too interested in New French Extremity so no immediate plans for Raw. Don't know too much about Creep but I'm under impression it's found footage of some sort which doesn't promise too much.

Very thoughtful presentation. I don't have anything to be terribly happy or cry about yet. Always reassuring to see the typical reactions though.

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
I see my #25 didn't make the 1-pointers list, serves me right for trying to game the list :o I don't think it will show up on the list proper. I think the only 1 pointer I have seen is Pitch Black, which I liked, but didn't have in contention for my list.
I almost voted for I Walked With a Zombie but at some point it got cut from my list although it probably shouldn't have done. Glad to see it here  |

Man, if Dead-Heat made the Top 100 List of Horror films but things like Jaws couldn't be included....I don't know what I'd do with myself. :p
Pitch Black Loved this film as a kid and Riddick is a genuine bad-ass. The best of the trilogy and it works well with an unknown Vin Diesel in the lead. Didn't consider it though. Stir of Echoes. It's one of the few films that when I think about it, I cringe and shiver. That is mainly attributed to one scene, when the girls fingernails break. Argh, horrible image to have in my head. It kind of came and went. People thought it was just trying to ride The Sixth Sense wave, but the film deserves more than that recognition. One of the better Bacon performances and genuinely creepy with a good sense of mystery added. Glad others at least liked it enough to consider it. Killer Klowns I own this and my wife is afraid of clowns. She will close her eyes and look away at the sight of one. So my son LOVES to grab this dvd and bring it to her and yell SCARY. It's hilarious. Never considered it or this though. When A Stranger Calls When I saw that it was the remake, I chuckled to myself. Generic PG-13 horror stuff. Very surprised to see it even be a 1-pointer. The House of the Devil There are a few things that go right for this film, the big one is mainly the aesthetic. I love the scene when the guy asks if the woman is the baby-sitter. Have wanted to check out The Void and only ever seen Bride and Seed of Chucky in full. Never seen I Walked With A Zombie or The House That Jack Built. The latter's running time is a turn off. For those that just missed it. I keep hearing all this praise for Kill List, guess I better finally watch it. Creep was great as was the sequel. Just never thought of it for this and wouldn't have put it on my list either way. Near Dark not making it is a bit of a surprise, even if I left it off my list. I figured it would have been one of the more iconic vampire films. Terrible ending, but everything else and more importantly Bill Freakin' Paxton is great. Loved Train to Busan, but didn't want to include it on an All-Time Top 25 list, would make a new Top 50 for me. Watched The Burning for the B-Movie HoF. It's okay for a slasher flick. The Fog. I mentioned how this one wouldn't make it and looks like I was right. Good movie nonetheless. |

The House that Jack Built was a wild ride. I cannot say I loved the film as a whole, but the scenes I did enjoy I really really loved. The last scene is quite the ride and trippy as hell, I would recommend it on that alone. Dillon did an amazing job and was perfect for the part, glad to see something newer on the list.
Near Dark was on my list at 17, sad that it didn't make it. https://www.movieforums.com/communit...1&d=1552913935 |

I could have watched 4 hours of that. It was my #6. |
Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
It's a shame Us wasn't out early to be included in the list. I'd be surprised if it's not received well.

Re: MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List
Just to put it to bed, Near Dark couldn't be on the list because it's not listed as horror on IMDB. Believe me, it would've made the list otherwise.
