A Song For January
Same as was done in previous tournaments of this type.....
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'. Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point). The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month. Songs that made it to previous 'finals' are ineligible -

Simples but if any relevant questions just ask. |
Re: A Song For January
No idea if there will be any desire for one of these this early in 2021 but I expect 'lockdowns' to become fairly prevalent in a few places following a Christmas Covid-19 surge so I thought it might be a welcome distraction and we'll see.
If there is enough interest I propose to start Round 1 at 9am (GMT) on 3rd January so nominations are welcome up to that point. As per a comment from @pahaK in the previous tournament the time limit per track for this one has been increased slightly from the usual 10 minutes to 11 minutes. |

Re: A Song For January
I'll be on board. Now.... To theme or not to theme?
|
How could I not join when even the rules have been altered for me? Anyways, I won't be abusing the extra minute that much, but I guess I'll have to start with the song that's responsible for this alteration. And like I said, it's only a few seconds over the previous 10 minutes rule.
R1 nomination: Argentum - Horta Funebra |

Death In Vegas - Aisha - I love this song and bought the album on the strength of it. Good purchase. Shame the vid isn't working for everyone. Maybe that will explain its inevitable poor performance?
The Organ - Brother - Good start to the round. Here's hoping it'll continue as I know almost none of the others here. Argentum - Horta Funebra - I spoke to soon, but only because of the length. The actual track was pretty good. I'd have just been happy for it to end at about the 6 minute mark when I thought it had.... For half a second. Clan of Xymox - Jasmine and Rose - It's ok but it's more in my wheelhouse so even though I don't know the song it feels familiar. It's going to place fairly well. Neu!- Hallogallo - It's like the intro to what you think may well be a good 80's pop song which never materialises. :( I've been here for nearly half an hour and I've only listened to 3 songs. :( Dierks Bentley - What The Hell Did I Say - This was alright. Sorry gbg. Jack Harlow ft. Dababy, Tory Lanez, & Lil Wayne - What's Poppin - Not quite my thing but it was short and catchy. After the previous 20 it was a welcome change of pace. Rattlesnake Milk - Dave Dudley - Have you guys started posting better country songs? I don't hate this either. Noreaga - Superthug - Sorry this didn't do anything for me. It didn't even annoy me. It might end up higher just because something else will annoy me. :D Oh, hello Bob.... Cage The Elephant - Cigarette Daydreams - Nice but quickly forgettable. Machine Gun Kelly - Bloody Valentine - Kind of just there. Nice but nothing else. I would choose to listen to this again but not because I dislike it. Bob Dylan - I Want You - Actually that's quite a nice pop song. If it wasn't for that horrible sound he emits when he opens his mouth I might have even liked it a little. |

Re: A Song For January
for my new year's resolution, i just decided now that i will play my Bowie Spotify tracks in random order. instead of starting with 1. Outside and playing through all his albums ending with VH1 Storytellers (Live). now, it will be totally random making every track feel like something new. i currently have 253 Bowie tracks on my phone. right now, apparently the opening title to Labyrinth (with Underground) is my most listened to track from 2020 at 339 streams of that one song alone. makes sense.

How to do that
As you can see I've already modified the Neil Young one for you in the quote so no need to change that one (unless you fancy a practise run). I do know this can be problematic if attempted from a mobile so I don't mind formatting for people as and when needed but it does make running these that little bit easier if that is kept to a minimum. Welcome in and hope you find it enjoyable. |

And I'm not using the word hootenanny. I'm English. :D |

Round 2
All the songs were new to me in this round, including my own nomination. I decided for this tournament to go with as many recent discoveries as I could. 1. MIEN - Earth Moon 2. Sky Pig - The Strain 3. The Gutter Twins - The Stations 4. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well 5. Woodkid - Run Boy Run 6- Don Williams - My Heart To You 7. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out 8. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind |
|
Round 3 nomination:
Yola - Faraway Look |
1. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well
2. Don Williams - My Heart To You 3. Sky Pig - The Strain 4. MIEN - Earth Moon 5. The Gutter Twins - The Stations 6. Woodkid - Run Boy Run 7. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out 8. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind Don Williams: He had such a great, smooth voice. This is a peaceful listen. Not too many frills, not overly exciting, but reliable and trustworthy, as Don Williams was. Jaime Wyatt: I still haven't gotten around to her most recent album, I need to rectify that soon. The first time I heard her, it was her cover of Misery and Gin, which I think is one of the top 25 country songs of the last decade. She's great, and the more I listen to Felony Blues, the more I like it. She's a very good songwriter in her own right. Sky Pig: pretty cool vibe Marshmello & Halsey: not for me. Is the girl in the video Halsey? she cute Woodkid: Always makes me wonder where I've been when I see a video has over 80 million views and I have no idea what it is. I'm neither hot nor cold on this track. I appreciate the music video doing something interesting. It almost looks like an NES or SNES left-to-right scroller at times. The Gutter Twins: There's a lot going on in the production here, to the point where I was paying attention to certain elements of it and forgot to listen the rest of the song. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because I want to listen to it again. MIEN: I can see myself getting into these guys if the rest of their work is similar to this. Linkin Park: I don't much care for Linkin Park. This song has good energy. I've heard worse flows from rappers. Still, not for me. |

Yikes. Completely forgot I posted a nom! I'll make some time at work tomorrow to cycle through the list for a vote.
|
1) Don Williams - My Heart To You
2) Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well 3) Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind 4) Woodkid - Run Boy Run 5) MIEN - Earth Moon 6) The Gutter Twins - The Stations 7) Linkin Park - Bleed It Out 8) Sky Pig - The Strain I'll post my nom for the next round later. |
Re: A Song For January
Skipped the last round 'cause nothing sounded good when I tried to figure out my nom, but here we go again.
R3 nomination: Dool - Wolf Moon |
|
|
Round 2:
1. Woodkid - Run Boy Run 2. Don Williams - My Heart To You 3. Sky Pig - The Strain 4. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out 5. MIEN - Earth Moon 6. The Gutter Twins - The Stations 7. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well 8. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind |
Round 2
1. The Gutter Twins - The Stations Mark Lanegan. What more needs to be said? People get your ears checked out. :D NOW! I always hate putting my picks first in these lists (unless it's Bowie), but I've been obsessed with Lanegan's voice for the last quarter of 2020. Then I tripped into The Gutter Twins with their "All Misery/Flowers" track and was elated. It took a while to decide which of these two tracks to post here, but erred on the side of caution feeling that "The Stations" might be more approachable all around. The strings are borderline overdone for me, but the song is solid. 2. MIEN - Earth Moon oooo groovy. I'm digging this a lot. It's like the smoothest best of Sky Cries Mary and Autolux. I can get into this. And it's actually building. I enjoyed Woodkid, but gotta bump this one up above it for the variety of it all. 3. Woodkid - Run Boy Run Woo just a few seconds into this one and I'm already overwhelmed. Video takes this sound to the next level. It's as if Morrissey and that guy from Alt-J were caught up into a single teleport stream on the Starship Enterprise, then convinced Hans Zimmer to write a percussive pattern for a pop song, all to be directed by Tim Burton's imagination but with someone else's restraint. Huh. Totally listening to the next track that's loading now. 4. Sky Pig - The Strain Decent sound all around. I even like the vocals. Just takes too long to get there, and the wall of reverb feels dated. No idea when this came out though. Woah. 2020? Did not expect that. All in all though, it's pretty good. I think shave about 3 minutes off to tighten this up and I feel it'd have a similar energy to "War Pigs." Hm. War Pig? Sky Pig? Is there a relation? 5. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind Not a fan of the genre, but dang if I can't take my eyes off the video =x That said, Choreography feels plucked from Sia's "Chandelier" (excellent vid, btw. nearly brings tears to my eyes/ears watching and listening to that one). Sorry. Gotta pause this ranking to finish listening to "Chandelier." 6. Don Williams - My Heart To You Good country. Just never much of a fan so other tracks will usually take higher billings with me. (sorry!) 7. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well This is right there at my border of country. Pretty good all around, but that classic voice-cracking is a bit much in the first verse. Melody reminds me of something but I can't place it. I'm thinking Emmylou Harris maybe. Maybe Aoife O'Donovan. Hate I can't find it... 8. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out Linkin Park is the devil! But at least Fred Durst is the devil's pool boy. ;) p.s. I hate Morrissey tho |
R3 Nommers:
Duran Duran - The Reflex There WAS a theme, but had to throw this in, totally screwing up that concept (brilliant that it was, though). Anyway. Listen to this bridge at least, and I dare ANY of you to convince me Mike Patton wasn't the original vocalist à la the Milli Vanilli scandal. You can't. Cuz he was. LISTEN! yay. this day can END now! |
Ok, time's up again, sadly no votes from Derek this time but as always on we go....
1st - Don Williams - My Heart To You (42 pts) 2nd - Sky Pig - The Strain (37 pts) 3rd - The Gutter Twins - The Stations (35 pts) 4th - MIEN - Earth Moon (34 pts) 5th - Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well (33 pts) 6th - Woodkid - Run Boy Run (32 pts) 7th - Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind (22 pts) 8th - Linkin Park - Bleed It Out (17 pts) Grats to Gbg on getting the second tune through to the Final  Round three up shortly... |
Sadly both Derek Vinyard and CaptainT take a break, hopefully they might rejoin at some point. Sedai and Skepsis93 both join in the fun though while honeykid, Captain Spaulding and pahaK all rejoin after a brief hiatus

Re: A Song For January
1 Dool - Wolf Moon - Top tune in this round, for sure. Will check out more of their stuff asap.
2 Meg Myers - Running Up That Hill - As we all know, I love me some Meg Myers... 3 Pete International Airport - Flowers of Evil - Another really strong entry. Had not heard before. 4 Duran Duran - The Reflex - Classic 80s stuff... 5 Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore - I would normally push Zep right to the top, but the vocals in this tune have always set my teeth on edge. 6 The KLF - America: What Time Is Love? - I like some of their other music more. 7 Neil Young - Unknown Legend - One of the better tunes from this artist. 8 Young Marble Giants - Choco Loni - Kind of hypnotic, but ended just as it was starting to get going. 9 Harry Connick Jr. - A Wink And A Smile - Not my style. 10 Yola - Faraway Look - Great pipes, but not my thing. 11 Chris Brown ft. Young Thug - Go Crazy - A miss for me... |
Re: A Song For January
round 4 nom:
Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick I don't usually nominate the same artist back-to-back like this. I'm in the middle of a massive revisiting of Zeppelin's discography to see how I feel about them ten years after the first time I got into them, so they are currently what's occupying my music brain. This song is very different from the previous Zep song I nominated. |
