The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
I started this forum 20 years ago. A decade into its existence we held a countdown to try to quantify which films were the most loved by the community. Now, a decade later, we're doing it again to see how our tastes have changed, both as a community (with plenty of new people), and as individuals. The Numbers To that latter point, exactly 10 people participated in both lists: rauldc14, honeykid, Yoda, sarah f, mark f, Miss Vicky, TheUsualSuspect, Iroquois, Thursday Next, and Powdered Water. In total we ended up with 96 ballots and 988 films. That's over twice as many submissions as the last incarnation of this list. To give you a sense of the scale, the #1 film last time had a point total that would've barely cracked the Top 10 this time around. And this time, it wasn't even possible to make the list unless at least three people chose you...and that's if they put you 1st, 1st, and 5th. Anything less just wasn't good enough. I am grateful to each and every person who submitted a list. I know it was hard to choose, to whittle down, and to rank our favorites, but we got through it, somehow. It's gonna be okay. Until a film you like doesn't make the cut or isn't as high as you'd like, at which case, you should definitely fly off the handle and call everyone a troglodyte. Mostly because it's just a fun word to say. A huge thanks, in particular, to @TheUsualSuspect for tabulating everything. I'd say it was a thankless task, but here I am thanking him so I guess it's a not. It's a one-thank task, unless some of you thank him, too (which you should). His efforts let me focus on all the fun stuff like presentation and arguing. I am grateful. The Panel TUGG, Holden Pike, Hey Fredrick, The Rodent, donniedarko, WrinkledMind, Diehl40, matt72582, Skepsis93, Tramuzgan, Guaporense, martyrofevil, Cobpyth, SpelingError, ahwell, mojofilter, John Dumbear, cricket, Citizen Rules, John W Constantine, Kaplan, Olivier Parent, KeyserCorleone, seanc, Rauldc14, The Samoan Lawyer, Captain Spaulding, Gandalf26, Miss Vicky, Thursday Next, HollowMan, neiba, pahaK, edarsenal, Siddon, Steve Freeling, John-Connor, Cobra, Torgo, Urkillinmesmalls, ScarletLion, Jinnistan, HashtagBrownies, SmudgeEFC1985, Rockatansky, re93animator, ApexPredator, dadgumblah, Deschain, Thunderbolt, Fabulous, Takoma11, sawduck, crumbsroom, Powdered Water, Mr Minio, John McClane, Yoda, Agrippinax, 7thson, GulfportDoc, Iroquois, CosmicRunaway, CiCi, Nemanja, MovieMeditation, honeykid, WHITBISSELL!, Okay, Raven73, Frightened Inmate No. 2, Wyldesyde19, kgaard, ynwtf, Wooley, Derek Vinyard, Pussy Galore, gbgoodies, moongirl, Sedai, Maaann, Austruck, Taz, MovieFan1988, resopamenic, StanleyKubrick, IrishSansRed, TONGO, rbrayer, mark f, TheUsualSuspect, sarah f, JayDee, cat_sidhe, Daniel M, Thief There's a few small technical things for me to work on and polish, so I'll give you guys this evening to make predictions and whip yourselves into a frenzy. Tomorrow I'll post the "one pointers." For those who don't know, those are the films who...yeah, you get the idea. They got one point, which means they were 25th on one person's ballot and not on any other lists. It's popular among panelists to put hopeless causes here so they get a little extra attention, and we're going to continue to reward that shameless gaming of our system. Thanks for your patience. Won't be long now. |

We're aware of a handful of duplicate entries and other minor clerical errors, most of which would have been consolidated when double-checked if they could have plausibly influenced the list. |
One Pointers are films that received exactly one point, which means a single person had them in the last spot on their ballot (25th), and they received no other votes from anyone else. Many panelists use this spot to give oddball films a little spotlight before the countdown starts in earnest. Here's what we ended up with this time: Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets (1971) The Saddest Music in the World (2003) Irreversible (2002) Fursonas (2016) The House on Haunted Hill (1959) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) Che? I'm sure I'll think of more later. 1. One, maybe two. Probably in the 40-60 range. 2. *rolleyes* The Dark Knight? 3. The Passion of Joan of Arc? A Trip to the Moon? 4. Parasite? The Irishman? 5. Where can I see the last list? 6. See above 7. Depending on how you classify them, so Alien or The Thing |

I'm sure I'll think of more later. 80-100, we'll prob see Infinity War, Endgame. What will be the highest-ranked comic book film, if any? Joker, or TDK. Somewhere in the 40s. What will be the oldest film on the countdown? Maybe the Lugosi Dracula (1931) What will be the newest film on the countdown? Joker I reckon What's the highest-ranked film from the last list that won't make the cut at all this time? Casablanca at 17th place on the last list, I think. I'm a little concerned about Big Lebowski from 8th in the last list too, as I've not seen it mentioned on MoFo for a couple years. Which film will make the biggest jump from the previous list? Blade Runner from the last list's 20th. I reckon top 10 this time round. Recency bias maybe because of the sequel. What will be the top horror film? The Shining, or The Exorcist. Shining may well break the actual Top 5. |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
The Crow could go from #100 to #1, but won't because...you know...Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

I'm sure I'll think of more later. I want it to be Civil War, but it will most probably be Infinity War. Dark knight will most probably be the highest ranked comic book movie. One or all of Joker, Parasite or Irishman would be the latest movie/s. Exorcist will safely be the highest ranked horror movie. |

1) Hopefully none, but probably some. I'm not even going to pretend that I know which ones are highly regarded though. 2) The Dark Knight...but I would prefer Superman II, because clearly this list should be beholden to my sense of nostalgia 3) The General 4) Parasite 5) Don't know the old list, but I'll guess Inglorious Basterds 6) Same as above, um, Paul Blart 7) The Thing |

Looks like 6 of the films from the 2010 list appeared on my ballot for this list. I'm not at all confident that they'll make a return this time around.

Poo test is such a vulgar term. We professors at Princeton call it an excrement examination.

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
Thanks for posting this Captain. Gives us noobs a reference point.
Also, just noticed I didn't include a single animated film. Please pardon my faux pas and if I could, would have squeezed in "Watership Down" or "Toy Story". |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
Hopefully we get no doubles of movies like you see in the old list with Indiana, Star Wars and Godfather. imo, every spot should have a different movie to make those movies to shine as well.

Wouldn't mind if Watership Down made it JD, one of my fav animated films.
Will one of the Marvel films make the top 100? If so, which, and how high? ?GOTG, Winter Soldier, Logan, X-Men DOFP? What will be the highest-ranked comic book film, if any? TDK What will be the oldest film on the countdown? Metropolis or Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans What will be the newest film on the countdown? La La Land What's the highest-ranked film from the last list that won't make the cut at all this time? Fargo Which film will make the biggest jump from the previous list? Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom What will be the top horror film? The Shining Thanks TUS & Yoda for doing this! And thanks to the entire panel of voters for sharing your movies. Let's Go! |

1) finishing up a few technical details about the presentation. 2) setting up a slightly different presentation for mobile. 3) double-checking the results. 4) parsing the results so I can snag a bunch of interesting stats. Mostly the above, with a little extra because Monday seems like a great time to start, and it gives people a whole day for the dozens of One-Pointers, coming early tomorrow. |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
Random Trivia:
There is exactly one film that was first on at least one list...but still missed the countdown entirely. Just one, though. Every other film that nabbed at least one first place vote made the Top 100. EDIT MUCH LATER: disregard for now, data recalculating happening and whatnot. |

I'm sure I'll think of more later. 2. TDK though I prefer BBegins. Joker might do well due to the recency factor. 3. Seven Samurai? 4. Gonna come back to this one. 5. Braveheart, but possibly The Departed at 7. 6. The Shining 7. Also The Shining |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
I'm just gonna "spoil" something and confirm that not a single person listed Napoleon Dynamite, in any spot. Not even a one-pointer, sorry people.
|
This list has officially failed then. There is no God.

No problem, take yea time, I'm sure this countdown stuff is alot of work. |
I have 3 from the previous list that I think still have a big chance to make this iteration.
There 5 to 7 titles that are frequent all-time lister in someplace that maybe will catch m surprises, my bet as a contender. the rest is, happy pointers. doesn't really matter.

yeah, that would be my one. I'm sure there's a few of us thinking the same. According to many here, "Parasite" is a must see. |

I'm sure I'll think of more later. -I think Infinity War will make it, but probably barely. -The Dark Knight, which will place somewhere around 40. - I think a few prior films get robbed and Casablanca is the oldest film - Parasite makes it somehow around 85 -Apocalypse Now misses - Spirited Away jumps to 55ish -Psycho as top horror around 16 Of course, these are all wrong. |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
Actually, scratch that, had a little data parsing error.
Maybe I'll just wait until everything is done processing formally before posting trivia... I do like how it made like four people go "yeah that's probably mine" though. |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
no, there is no "probably". that's must be mine :D

I'll take a guess, what do I win if I'm 100% right:cool:
1 Will one of the Marvel films make the top 100? If so, which, and how high? Infinity War towards the bottom third of the list 2 What will be the highest-ranked comic book film, if any? The Dark Knight 3 What will be the oldest film on the countdown? Metropolis 4 What will be the newest film on the countdown? Parasite 5 What's the highest-ranked film from the last list that won't make the cut at all this time? American History X 6 Which film will make the biggest jump from the previous list? Schindler's List 7 What will be the top horror film? Alien |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
Somehow 12 of my picks are on that previous top 100 list. I don't see 12 making it this time

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 of All-Time Refresh: Countdown
at least there's enough folks to have a support group: The Lost "Ones" lol
and I have 7 from the previous one. I didn't look over the first Top 100 previously but I have a feeling (hoping) there'll be a lot more older films this time around. |

I don't think I voted for a 1 pointer but I guess there's a chance. I think it's made a list before though.
