Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
THAT black/white flying saucer movie scared the heck out of me, as a kid,as it showed how ALIEN the guys in the heavy-space suits were, and all the "inhuman" behavior.--which later as an adult,I realized was very HUMAN BEHAVIOR--how we would have acted, going to another planet,& tried to take over their planet.(shmirk).PLUS, the giant octopus wrapped around the huge bridge was a big favorite.JULES VERNES I first read, then watched, they translated so well to movie form.(Did anyone else ever read Edger Rice Burroughs"Tarzan novels," as a kid or teen?)Incidentally, BOTH BLOB movies are good!;)

Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
I was not a great Star Wars fan, till I realized later,I could just take it as a "strictly fun" or "video-game movie," rather than accepting the plot.I thought the writing-side was weak.I enjoyed it as a lark.

Just bumping this thread so I don't forget to scour 2016's entries. 1950 The Flying Saucer 1951 The Day The Earth Stood Still 1952 Untamed Women 1953 Invaders From Mars 1954 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea 1955 The Quatermass Xperiment 1956 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers 1957 Invasion Of The Saucer-Men 1958 The Blob 1959 Journey To The Center Of The Earth 1960 The Lost World 1961 Mysterious Island 1962 La Jetée 1963 The Nutty Professor 1964 First Men In The Moon 1965 Planet Of The Vampires 1966 Fantastic Voyage 1967 Jules Verne’s Rocket To The Moon 1968 Planet Of The Apes 1969 Doppelgänger (Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun) 1970 Scream And Scream Again 1971 The Andromeda Strain 1972 Solaris 1973 Westworld 1974 Dark Star 1975 The Stepford Wives 1976 Logan’s Run 1977 Star Wars 1978 Superman: The Movie 1979 Alien 1980 The Empire Strikes Back 1981 Scanners 1982 Blade Runner 1983 Return Of The Jedi 1984 The Terminator 1985 Back To The Future 1986 Aliens 1987 RoboCop 1988 Alien Nation 1989 The Abyss 1990 Total Recall 1991 Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1992 Freejack 1993 Jurassic Park 1994 Death Machine 1995 Species 1996 Independence Day 1997 Event Horizon 1998 Deep Rising 1999 Galaxy Quest 2000 Pitch Black 2001 Evolution 2002 Signs 2003 Dreamcatcher 2004 Godsend 2005 Doom 2006 Children Of Men 2007 The Mist 2008 Cloverfield 2009 Moon 2010 Monsters 2011 Super 8 2012 Dredd 2013 World War Z 2014 Guardians Of The Galaxy 2015 Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens 2016 ??? In the running so far: Batman V Superman, Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, 10 Cloverfield Land, TMNT: Out Of The Shadows (borderline sci-fi)... 2016 has been a bit slow in the sci-fi, space and futuristic-fantasy stakes. Any ideas and suggestions for me to look at would be appreciated :D |
Bumping this to remind me... I got it to 10 possibilities now... result for 2016 Sci-Fi And Futuristic-Fantasy will be done after New Year once I get a chance to actually see Rogue One. Cinema is packed right now, no way am I fighting through all the plebs to get a seat. 10 Cloverfield Lane Arrival Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Deadpool Independence Day: Resurgence Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Star Trek Beyond Suicide Squad TMNT: Out Of The Shadows (borderline sci-fi) X-Men Apocalypse |
Well, got the one sorted for 2016... Choices were between 10 Cloverfield Lane, Arrival, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,Suicide Squad TMNT: Out Of The Shadows (borderline sci-fi), X-Men Apocalypse This marks the first Trek movie to make my list. Beyond is surprisingly better than expected, and the standalone story makes it, well, stand out. |

Shortlist for 2017: Alien Covenant Blade Runner 2049 Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Justice League Kong: Skull Island Life Logan Power Rangers Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Wonder Woman - - - 2017 War For The Planet Of The Apes https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...pes_poster.jpg Marks the only entry for the new Apes movies to make the list. Solid third movie to the first two, and rounds up Caesar's journey nicely too. |
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Ok, shortlist so far for 2018 coming up...
|
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Avengers: Infinity War
Annihilation Solo: A Star Wars Story Ready Player One Black Panther Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom The Predator Pacific Rim Uprising Deadpool 2 The Meg Now, most of these aren't out yet... but, making a start on a shortlist for December... any suggestions for me to have a go at would be gratefully accepted. |
A Quiet Place, Isle of Dogs, and The Endless those were all pretty good.
I've also heard good things about Upgrade |
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Awesome, will have a gander at them.
Been wanting to see A Quiet Place for ages, and waiting for the DVD. Problem is, I've avoided all media on the movie until I can see it so I don't spoil it for myself so not sure exactly if it's sci-fi or not. I'll get the DVD soon and give it a pop, just don't spoil it for me between then and now :) |
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
@mark f any ideas on any under-the-radar sci-fi and futuristic fantasy movies me to keep any eye open for?

Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Got the shortlist for 2018:
Avengers: Infinity War Solo: A Star Wars Story Ready Player One Deadpool 2 A Quiet Place |
This Year's Winner:
Nope, not Infinity War as some, even me, would have thought it would be. An affective, effective horror... packed with tension, a few hints of homage to other horror movies... and some fantastic acting. Especially from Millicent Simmonds, a ground-breaking actress I've even got shortlisted on my nominations for MoFo's Film Awards Best Supporting Actress Category (shameless plug there @TheUsualSuspect). This film is not worthy of just a look... it's worthy of actually buying on home-release as part of your collection, and easily earns its quiet place on the shelf (ahem, sorry, couldn't help the pun). 2018's Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movie is: A Quiet Place. |
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Have you seen this: Prodigy? It should count as 2018 as the 2017 showing was just one festival. For me it's the best scifi (etc.) film this year at staggering 7/10 rating :D

Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
That was one I looked over in 2017 when I was shortlisting and never really considered.
It's a decent movie, lots of tension and pretty well photographed, but never made the shortlist. |

Bump the thread!
Shortlisted: Spider-Man: Far From Home Avengers: Endgame Terminator: Dark Fate Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Alita: Battle Angel Shazam! Gemini Man Rodent's Best Sci-Fi, Space and Futuristic Fantasy Movie 2019 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._poster%29.png Glass Ok, borderline with the sci-fi thing, but, it definitely is sci-fi given it's about superheroes and super powers and stuff. Combining solid storytelling with both the psychological-thriller and atmosphere of the first 2 movies in the series. Loved the actual psychology stuff going on as well in terms of the story revolving around a psychologist studying the characters etc. Not as strong as the first movie, but it's better than the (still) brilliant 2nd movie, doesn't rely too heavily on the audience having to have seen the other movies to understand it... and it's rare for the 3rd-in-a-trilogy to do all those things. Well worth a pop. |

I seem to like Far from Home a lot more than most, so cool to see I think you liked it too

I think it suffers from the studio in-fighting and the fact it had the unenviable task of being the follow-up to Endgame. But yeah, I thought it was solid tbh. Not the best MCU movie, but still solid and fun. |
