Newman has to try to keep his team together in the face of little support from the General Manager (the wonderful Strother Martin), and Newman eventually gets a brainstorm to pump his team up by concocting a fake sale of the team from their cold Northern climes to Florida.

As rumours of the team folding begin to swirl, the teams player & coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman), devises a plan to get the team interested again in order to possibly sell the team at the end of the season.

In an effort to save the team and his own career, Reggie decides that the way to get fans back in the seats is for the team to get down and dirty on the ice, which puts Reggie in direct conflict with an idealistic rookie named Ned (Michel Ontkean).
