You must choose movies from the available lists that the other members have not seen. Make sure your lists are filled out and up to date!

61182

If you want to nominate a movie longer than 160 minutes for someone, let me know and I'll ask the person if it's ok. If a member has no time limit restrictions, feel free to mention it in the thread when you sign up.

Normally the due date would add up to 1 week per movie. I will add about 2 weeks to that total to give ample time to finish, but there will be a due date!

Anyone can join, but if you've never completed a Hall of Fame before, you will need to watch 4 of the movies picked for you within 1 month before I post your nominations.

You have until Saturday night July 3rd to join. Once Sunday comes you can start sending me your nominations. I ask that you wait until then so that my inbox doesn't fill up.

Any questions go ahead and ask in the thread. Let's go!

Just a reminder that despite me being a goody-goody rule follower, if someone prominently involved in the making of the film is a know rapist or otherwise abusive trash person, I will not watch the film. Ditto films with unsimulated animal cruelty/death. If you're not sure if a film crosses this boundary for me, please feel free to ask (via Cricket) and I will clarify.

This past year and this summer have been kind of intense, so I'd love a film that you think of as being joyful or beautiful or optimistic. But that is just a thought and if you think the best thing I haven't seen is some soul-rending sob-fest, go for it!

100%! The reason I love these PRHoF's is because all the movies are first time watches. As much as I love re-watching my favorite films there are some films where one viewing is enough (I'm looking at you "In a Glass Cage" ;)). The only downer about these HoF's is it's getting tough to pick movies from the MoFo lists for a few people without going with a blind nom or choosing a movie that you're pretty confident they won't enjoy.

I'm in for this one.

I don't know, honestly. My reaction to it has always just been "eh." I'm not a big fan of any of the actors involved, I don't find the plot description all that compelling, it has a really long run time. (Sorry if that sounds shallow, but I'm talking about what draws me to a film, not how I actually judge a film's worth). I will say that the stills I've seen of it are gorgeous, but as with Barry Lyndon, pretty ain't gonna keep me happy for 3 hours.

But I go into everything with as much of an open mind as possible. The poster for Cranes Are Flying kept me away from it for a while and I loved it. In fact, discovering that something I thought I'd find just medium is actually really great is a wonderful feeling. If there's a classic you're head over heels for, recommend it!

Not that I'm expecting any of these to be picked but here are a few movies I've watched parts of and turned off because I thought they were, to be nice, not too good ( I don't check off a movie unless I've seen it all the way through):

Marty, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Wild Bunch, Harold and Maude, Goldfinger, Deep Red, Eyes Wide Shut, Dick Tracy, Alphaville, Oliver!, The Sons of Katie Elder, Billy Madison, My Dinner With Andre, Shakespeare in Love, The Birth of a Nation, Bowling for Columbine, Educating Rita. That's about all of them.

Also, not a fan of Woody Allen, James Bond or Charlie Chaplin. Any genre is fine by me but when it comes to love stories/romance, again not a fan but the older the better and it helps if they're a musical.

Ok, I didn't check ALL the lists, but did make some updates. Most notables were on the Animated and Documentary lists where I pretty much hadn't checked anything.
Quite honestly, the reveal is one of my favorite parts of this. I always compare mine to everyone else’s.

I’ll echo what has been said previously about the great number of gems that have been represented here the first few times I joined.

Looking forward to joining the next one

I've seen 7 of Neiba's. There's one I'm not a huge fan of, but then again, I haven't seen it in a good while. The others are all pretty good/great.

Okay takes the cake so far for the best bunch for me. I've seen 11, but a lot of those are easily among my all-time favorites, including my #1 favorite film.

I've seen 4 of Siddon. One of those, I haven't seen since I was a kid. He was my toughest to choose for... again (but then again, we ended up trading #1's in the last one, so maybe we'll repeat that again?)

Room at the Top (1959), Secrets & Lies (1996), The Full Monty (1997) are all on the same page

Paris, Texas (1984), The Player (1992), Zodiac (2007), The Conversation (1974) those are all slow burn epics

Alice in Wonderland (1951) - weird that you never saw thisI've said this before but I grew up before the era of DVDs or even VCRs so I never watched childhood movies over and over like most people have...We only had 1 TV in our house when I was a kid, so movies weren't accessible to me. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)- weird pick and know nothing of it
Sexy Beast (2000)- again don't know much of it
Sullivan's Travels (1941)- cool another Sturges
Taste of Cherry (1997)- haven't cared for Kiarastomi much but hope this hits
Trainspotting (1996)- never thought I'd really like it but gotta give it a fair shake
True Romance (1993)- probably will like
Viridiana (1961)- super high hopes
When Harry Met Sally (1989)- probably will like

I'd guess The Full Monty is the one he's dubious about. I think it's a good film.

My guess is it's Zodiac but I don't remember it being terribly graphic.

The Birds, the Bees, and the Italians (1966) - not a big Italian fan but this has potential.
Black Dynamite (2009) - I think this will do well
The Court Jester (1955) - Yeah I don't know what people were thinking with this one.
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974) - I plan really sitting down with this one.
Fantastic Voyage (1966) - good pick, this is up my alley
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) - dark horse to win
Man on Wire (2008) - the other dark horse to win
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Pursued (1947) - I don't know why people don't pick noirs for me they always do well
The Rules of the Game (1939) - I watched this in High School and forgot everything about it so really looking forward to this as an adult
Saturday Night Fever (1977) - not really my cup of tea but I have to get over it
The Straight Story (1999) - never watched it Lynch is hot and cold for me but it was on my list.

Which cut of Apocalypse Now do y'all recommend?
Theatrical imo. Redux has some scenes that actually seem to drag it down, strangely enough.

I recently rewatched this again a few months ago and man….

Also, I noticed more films (Red Road, Mustang, Wendy and Lucy) from the “Directed by Women” list were selected then normally. That’s good, plenty of interesting films there.

Theatrical, then maybe seek out the alternate scenes somewhere else. I think they are interesting enough to watch, but the film doesn't need them.

Okay

Thoughts on my picks:

3 Women (1977) - Have yet to watch anything by Altman, and if I were to this probably would've been my first pick as well.
Apocalypse Now (1979) - Almost watched it on numerous occasions, I expect to love it.
Citizen Kane (1941) - I managed to stay spoiler free throughout my life despite how big of a classic this movie is, so I'm excited to see what it's about and see how it will sit with me.
Dark City (1998) - Not as much of a classic (I think) as the other noms, so that alone excites me and gives me more variety.
The Devil's Backbone (2001) - I also almost seen this way back when. Obviously don't think it will be my favourite among these noms, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
L. A. Confidential (1997) - Just saw Wonder Boys recently which was kind of bad, but I know this is known to be the best from this director, and it's a classic too so...
The Others (2001) - I've actually been spoiled about the twist in this film so that's a little disappointing.
Platoon (1986) - A classic! Not much to say though, and no clue if I'll like it as much as other people seem to.
Psycho (1960) - Yeah I should see more from Hitchcock. Loved Dial M, Rope, and Rebecca.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Is this still first place in that Top 100 imdb?
Sweet Smell of Success (1957) - Lovely pick! Excited to watch it. The poster is pretty appealing.
Woman in the Dunes (1964) - This is the style of film I usually go for so I'm glad this was nominated.

Overall, a lot of variety, I can already feel I'll have new favourites by the end of it all, and it will surely be interesting seeing how I rank one above the other.

Ok, some quick thoughts on my picks...

An Autumn Afternoon (1962)
Black Narcissus (1947)
The Double Life of Veronique (1991)
Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)
High Noon (1952)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
The Innocents (1961)
Mustang (2015)
Tootsie (1982)
Touch of Evil (1958)
The Virgin Spring (1960)
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966)

Most of these are films that have been more or less on my radar. I also see that someone picked up on my interest on The Virgin Spring from the MoFo Foreign Film thread  Considering that I've seen 5 or so Bergman in a relatively short span of time, why not keep trucking? Also nice to see another Ozu film, considering how much I've loved the two I've seen.

Mustang is the only one I hadn't heard of. Turkish drama. Should be interesting.

Now Tootsie is the only one I've really never felt any impulse to see. I've kinda fell off comedies lately, but it's Sidney Pollack and Dustin Hoffman, so c'mon. Gotta see it at some point.

Thanks to everybody!

My movies

Alice in Wonderland (1951)
This is a nice choice for me as I haven't seen many classic Disney animated films. Animated movies are a bit of a long shot for me. I've liked the ones from the past Personal Recs but not loved them.

Bob Le Flambeur (1956)
French 1950s, Casino robbery caper...sounds good to me. It reminds me of an episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nice, which is a plus!

Bullitt (1968)
I believe I seen this at the theater with my parents way back in 1968 when I was a wee tyke. I don't remember a thing about it. I've always wanted to watch this as an adult.

City Lights (1931)
I was hoping this would be chose for me. I've liked or loved all the Chaplin films that I've seen so far.

The Conversation (1974)
I've heard of it, Gene Hackman is a favorite actor so hoping I like it.

The Full Monty (1997)
I didn't mean this one when I said I was dubious about one of the films, but after reading about it, maybe I should be:p I don't enjoy male nudity, however I do like female nudity (if it's tastefully done🙂).

The General (1926)
Buster Keaton is the man! I had wanted to watch this for the Pre 1930s Countdown but never got around to it. Glad to see it chose.

Paris, Texas (1984)
Harry Dean Stanton & Dean Stockwell sounds good to me.

The Player (1992)
Never heard of it...but this sounds way cool: 'A Hollywood studio executive is being sent death threats by a writer whose script he rejected, but which one?'

Room at the Top (1959)
Never heard of it...BUT someone read my mind because I just seen Laurence Harvey on the old What's My Line TV show and then read about him and was planning on seeing one of his films.

Secrets & Lies (1996)
Not heard of it...BUT this sounds very interesting 'Following the death of her adoptive parents, a successful young black optometrist establishes contact with her biological mother -- a lonely white factory worker living in poverty in East London.'...

Zodiac (2007)
A bit dubious about this one, it sounds too violent for my taste and I usually hate newer movies about criminal predators stalking innocent people...call that my 'movie trigger'.

Some really great lists across the board here.

Seen 9 of allaby's. Pretty cool to see, along with others, Ride The Pink Horse in there. Quite the hidden gem that one

Seen 5 of CR's. Cool little list and nice to see the assist for adding to CR's unwatched classic Disney films. Alice should be a lot of fun for him. I was tempted to go with Pinocchio for him when I went searching for a nom.

Only 3 of Frederick's and one that is on my watchlist is in there.

A grand total of 8 on neiba's. Though, like I remarked, I really should take Diabloque off my list since it was back in the early 90s when I saw it and haven't since. I think I will so I can improve that revisit.

An even grander total of 10 for Okay. I was surprised to see such an open board to choose from with Okay so it was almost utterly random when I picked one for him.
Two things I thought were kinda cool. Since Apocolypse and Platoon normally get compared it'll be intriguing that he'll see 'em both.
I also noticed I share a film with okay as well: Woman in the Dunes. We'll see how be both feel about it.

Another large amount, 9 for raul's noms. Both raul and sean still remain a bit of an enigma when it comes to choosing for. Hopefully I found some decent ones for them both.

8 for sean with a childhood favorite that I'd like to revisit one day; Silent Running.

5 for Siddon. Was surprised about Poseidon NOT being seen by you and I'll try to remember the remark about considering noirs for you.

6 with Takoma. Interesting spread on that one.

7 with Thief. A number of them, faves.

7 of Thursday's. Some of which I'm looking forward to how she feels about them

And with the least-watched, only 2 out of cricket's.

As for myself:
Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987) One from my watchlist -- SWEET
Black Orpheus (1959) Seen this one pop up a few times and while it doesn't seem like something I wanted to see, it could end up a surprise.
Born Yesterday (1950) An unknown George Cukor film so it should be a lot of fun.
Captain Courageous (1937) A classic MustSee! and now I finally get to
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) One I had avoided due to how depressing I've heard it to be but I have also heard nothing but great reviews for it, so, while it'll be a hard watch, it will be an incredible watch.
Grizzly Man (2005) Heard a lot about this Doc, should be fun.
Le Jour Se Leve (1939) And another from my watchlist -- YAY
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) Another MUSTSEE! from the 30s -- VERY nice!
The Right Stuff (1983) I have seen this when it came out and only once and I don't think I saw all of it, and remember nearly nothing of it so I purposely kept it unchecked and now I'll have a proper viewing of it.
The Searchers (1956) One of two from the Westerns I need to see
Shane (1953) and here be the second. A mandatory addition to a proper western list
Woman in the Dunes (1964) Know pretty much nil about this one and honestly have no idea where it will land. Hence the fun!

CR's list - seen 11/12. Quite a varied list here. I think you will enjoy a few of these.

Ed's list - seen 8/12 You got an 80s coming of age movie anyway - John Hughes who? :P

Hey Fredrick - seen 10/12 Someone thought Brief Encounter was the best pick for someone who doesn't like romantic films? Interesting...

Neiba - seen 11/12. A couple of fun noms in amongst the gloom!

Okay - seen 11/12 A lot of classics here, but some of them will have to finish quite low down.

raul - seen 11 - I really think you will like my nom but I've been wrong before

Sean - seen 9/12 - A few of the noms were my back up options here, so will be interesting to see what you make of them.

Siddon - 5/12 Quite a varied bunch of noms

Takoma - seen 10/12 We both got Wendy and Lucy, that will be interesting. You've got a couple of my absolute favourites here. The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) - I've been intrigued by this since I watched Shape of Water, looking forward to it.
Gentleman's Agreement (1947) - A bit unsure about the premise of this one but it will be good to see it.

La Collectionneuse (1967) - I think I had this mixed up in my head with The Collector, but of course it's a completely different film. Not a fan of Rohmer so far but will give it a try.
The Little Foxes (1941) - Wanted to see this back when we did the 40s countdown but it slipped off my list.

Nah. I'd rather watch a good movie than a mediocre movie that's "happy". I just know that right now I'm more receptive to optimistic stories because I've been a bit stressed.

Bless ya'll for accommodating all my quirks and demands.

And CitizenRules, while there are a few moments of violence in Zodiac, the film leans much more on atmosphere and suspense and tension. It feels much more like a mystery/thriller than a serial killer film. I think it's pretty great, and I'm not sure I've ever talked to someone who didn't at least like it.

JFK: I've always been interested in this, but it's one of those things where, unless it's at the very top of your must see list, you don't usually pick the long movie.

Field of Dreams: If they build it, they will come. Is that right? Strange that I've never seen this and I am a lifelong sports fan. Only thing I can think of is that I usually don't pick out family friendly movies.

Sophie's Choice: I didn't like Meryl Streep when I was younger but I feel different now. I know this is the only movie on one of the lists I haven't seen. 100 years 100 movies I think.

Red Road: I remember this showing up on the female directors countdown. I'm sure I looked it up then but I don't remember now. A blind watch.

The Decline of Western Civilization: I'm pretty sure this is on the documentary list but it's a blind watch.

Stranger than Paradise: I'm not sure what list this is on but I believe this is a Jim Jarmusch movie. I can't stand what I've seen of him so far but I wanted to try more.

Dheepan: I think this is on the Cannes list. Blind watch.

Monsieur Hire: I think this is on the Ebert list, blind watch.

The Testament of Dr Mabuse: I think this is a series of movies. I looked one of them up once and thought they looked really good. One of them is very long, I don't know if it's this one. This is probably on the 30s list?

Life is Sweet, Brother's Keeper, and Caravaggio: All blind watches and I don't know what lists they're on. When that's the case, it's probably either female directors, documentaries, Cannes, or British.

Surprised nobody picked the movie I most want to see. There's always next time, or the time after, or the time after that.

Another Earth (2011) Been on my watchlist for awhile.
Brief Encounter (1945) Never heard of it
Castle in the Sky (1986) Gonna keep building up that anime resume!
The Conversation (1974) Love the 70's, love Hackman. Seems like a solid/safe pick.
High and Low (1963) Have only seen 4 Kurosawa films and they've all been outstanding. So why haven't I seen more? Good question.
House of Wax (1953) Big blind spot for me - 50's horror.
How Green Was My Valley (1941) Heard of it but don't know anything about it.
It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012) Never heard of it but I have to like it, right?
I Walked with a Zombie (1943) Kind of the same thing as House of Wax. Just never watched older horror because of the lack of blood and guts
Memories of Murder (2003) Been wanting to see this. It's on my watchlist but I kind of forgot about it.
Persona (1966) Need to see more Bergman. I think I've only seen 2 from him. One I loved and one I was impressed with but it was a bit of a drain.
Touch of Evil (1958) I've started this a couple times but never finished it. Can't remember why. Cat probably got outside and I had to put my entire life on hold to chase the little beast around the neighborhood for at least an hour, can of tuna dripping all over my hands, knowing full well that the little ****er would've be sitting at the back door in 15 minutes if ya just let it be. Or maybe I just fell asleep.

Overall, I'm pretty hyped about these films.

So I just finished watching Dead Man (1995). I had heard about this film a while back and had been meaning to eventually watch it, but had never gotten around to it. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, the film stars Johnny Depp a man named William Blake who goes on an unusual journey after killing a man. This is a really interesting film, with a very intelligent screenplay and is directed with distinctive style and substance. Depp is great here and there is a wonderful and interesting cast that are all in fine form. The film has a dream like atmosphere and feels quite poetic at times. The black and white cinematography is beautiful and striking and helps enhance the mood of the film. The score by Neil Young is fantastic and perfectly complements the film. Dead Man is an unusual and artfully made gem. A great choice for me, so thanks to whoever picked it. My rating is a 4.5.

Reactions!

A Taste of Honey (1961)--Watching it now!

Cabaret (1972)--I've been trying to watch this film for ages. Excited for it!

Dancer in the Dark (2000)--Ah, the film that broke Bjork's spirit! I see someone was like "Optimistic eh? Hee hee hee!"

Floating Weeds (1959)--Watched the 30s version of this and really liked it, and I've been excited to watch the 50s version!

The Lives of Others (2006)--Been on my watchlist for a good while.

MASH (1970)--I started this AGES ago and just wasn't vibing with it (like, in the first 5 minutes). Excited to give it another spin! I have a pretty good track record with Altman.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)--I really like Hilary Swank. I wish I didn't know certain things about how it ends, but excited to check it out! Eastwood can be a bit hit-or-miss for me, but when it's a hit, I really like his work.

Mystery Train (1989)--Another one from my watchlist. I have yet to be really failed by Jarmusch.

Roman Holiday (1953)--Definitely falls under that category of classics I've been meaning to see for ages and just never got around to.

Stand By Me (1986)--Ditto!

Sullivan's Travels (1941)--I've enjoyed what I've seen from Preston Sturges. Looks good!

Wendy and Lucy (2008)--Love Michelle Williams. This has been on my to-see list for ages but because it involves animals and (probably) heartbreak, I just haven't gone for it yet. I swear to god if the dog dies . . . *shakes fist* . . . (Okay, I'll probably still love it, but still *shakes fist*).

And the 1st member in the 2nd post watches the 1st movie in the 2nd post while also becoming the 1st member to watch their 1st movie. Coincidence? I think not!

One quick question, what's everybody's takes on revealing who recommended what? Don't care? Wait for the final reveal at the end? I asked the same on the previous PR and wanted to know the same here.

Glad you liked it-I hate that movie!!

It seems kind of polarizing. I feel like I've only heard love-it/hate-it reactions.

Also, thanks to everyone for making the effort of keeping everything under 2 hours for me. I only have one a little over 2 hours, but I can make it work.

To each their own. I only revealed what I picked for someone once, when Miss Vicky hated Blue Velvet. She didn't vote it last though:D

2 of the things people praise are what I hate most, the cinematography and score. And I love Neil Young!

Takoma would finish in 3 days except she'll have a movie that gets lost in the mail.

I don't mind if people reveal who recommended what. It doesn't affect me enjoyment or opinion of the films. I also have no problem with people choosing not to reveal what they recommended until the very end. I'm fine with it either way. I'm easy to please!

Definitely mention this next time around. I've shied away from recommending docs because I'm never totally sure if people are into them as opposed to wanting narrative films.

Actually, a documentary HoF could be pretty cool.

I'd be down for another Doc HOF. They've done one before unfortunately I wasn't in it

A Taste of Honey, 1961

Teenager Jo (Rita Tushingham) has a fraught relationship with her mother, Helen (Dora Dryan). When Helen picks up a new boyfriend-then-husband (Robert Stephens), Jo seeks solace in the arms of a soldier who has been wooing her (Paul Danquah). After Jimmy ships out and Helen moves in with her new hubby, Jo discovers she is pregnant. Enter Geoff (Murray Melvin), a gentle, gay young man who takes a liking to Jo. Together they set up house, but as Jo's pregnancy progresses, their domestic set-up begins to strain.

What a fun little film!

The best part of the film is the way that it captures the complex emotions of moving from childhood to adulthood. I so identified with Jo's misery as she both wants to be looked after by her mother in one moment and yet treated like an adult in another. Dora Dryan, as Helen, perfectly portrays the slightly baffled, slightly irritated reaction of a mother who can't do anything right, though she is very aware that she hasn't made the best choices herself or set the best example for her daughter. As she says "Why can't you learn from my mistakes? It takes half a lifetime just to learn from your own." While Jo is the central character, the film carves out a nice little space for Helen, who wants to do right by her daughter, but also finds herself at the mercy of her own decisions and her marriage to a man who seems to be her best option for future security.

Also interesting are Jo's relationships with the two male characters her age. Having read the plot description, it was a pleasant surprise to see how the relationship with Jimmy was portrayed. The two of them have a pretty sweet little romance. Sleeping together is obviously a huge mistake, but it's an understandable one even as you're going "No!!!!!!". At first, Geoff feels like a bit of a contrivance. This gay angel swoops in and cleans up Jo's apartment and provides her with stability and companionship while asking nothing in exchange. But as Geoff himself later makes clear, he was in a bit of a depression and having someone to care for was a way to give himself purpose. The film never really addresses what Geoff's future might look like. He obviously cannot openly seek out his own romantic partner, and the film lets that hang there. If anything, it seems plainly tragic that such a caring person will never be able to openly pursue love and the domestic partnership he has with Jo.

The film ultimately leaves a lot of elements up in the air: Jo's relationship with her mother; whether Jo and Geoff will continue their partnership; whether Jimmy will ever return. But the character arc is all about Jo coming to terms with how her pregnancy is going to change her life.

On the downside, the scenes between Helen and Jo are so good, that the rest of the film sort of pales slightly in comparison. Dryan is just so good, that I found myself wishing that I was spending more time with Helen. And while it's nice seeing a film portray a gay character in a positive and productive light, it does fall into that trap of the "asexual gay" character. Geoff is coded as being super gay---people seem to just take one look at him and clock him as homosexual--and yet we see no signs of desire. It's tragic that Geoff can't pursue love, and yet the film leaves this as just an implicit thing. It would have gone a long way, in my opinion, to have even a single longing glance at a man.

Good pick--thanks!

And, yeah, some delayed Netflix DVD will probably slow me down at some point!

A Taste of Honey is the first kitchen sink I can remember watching, and one of the better ones. That actress was very good.

Sorry about that. Moved to the correct thread.I have a question for MarkF that I've wondered about. All of your list are checked off, except two movies from the Cannes' Award Winners, Men Without Wings (1946) & Red Meadows (1945). Mark is there a reason you haven't checked those off? Is it that those two film are unavailable? Or some other reason? I'm just curious.
