3.5

For the first half of this movie, my question was why hasn't it been nominated for a general HoF, it was that good. Unfortunately from there it turned into something different and not quite up to par with what came prior.

It starts off in war torn Sri Lanka with a man burning bodies and a woman walking around asking children if they have a mother, or asking women if that was their daughter. So the woman, the man, and a girl who lost her mother join together to pose as a family to get the hell out of there. They make their way to Paris and this is when I thought we really had a compelling story. Three strangers band together to survive and make their way in an unfamiliar land. I figured I'd be getting two hours of them maybe becoming a family while navigating their way, and we get that to an extent. When they arrived in Paris, they ended up at a slum project where the man found work as a caretaker and the woman work helping an elderly man in the complex. The slum is run by criminals which at first adds an extra layer of danger and intensity, but to my disbelief it really goes there. Everyone knows that I love violent movies, but this was already a great movie with excellent performances, a moving story, and characters I cared about. Going all Taxi Driver and Straw Dogs was surprising and felt unnecessary when the film had a good thing going. Of course I wouldn't have been surprised if I found out before I watched it that it was partially inspired by Straw Dogs. A very good movie that could have been so much more.

Great job Ed, sorry you didn't like it more!

I probably would on a revisit. It felt like it needed additional views to properly get into it and then to equal out the respect and the appreciation for it and thereby the enjoyment of it.

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser(1974)

Part of the problem with nominations like this is getting decent subs and a decent print is damn near impossible. I had to judge a film based on the quality of the version I found online especially a film like this.

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser tells the story of a strange man who shows up with a note in hand and can do absolutely nothing. The idea was he was kept locked away for his whole life so everything is a chore for him. Visually Herzog does a great job with the film, it feels period accurate and the composition of the shots is great. Narratively...it was a 2 hour film that felt like six. I mean this film just dragged on and on. Part of the problem is we see the film from Kaspar perspective and Kaspar isn't a good choice. It would have been smarter to take and develop supporting characters and use them to feature Kaspar.

Several scenes are particularly good, I loved the old freak show scene but my interest was constantly waning during other points of the story. The third act has a pretty big twist but it's stripped of any sort of suspense and played frankly clinically and empty. It was a big disappointment for me because it's a great story and the elements of a great film were there but the tone and pacing were all off.

JFK

https://www.denofgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/jfk2.jpg

I watched the 205 minute director's cut because that's what was available to me.

The JFK assassination was before my time and I've never been a history buff. Obviously I do know some things about this event including the fact that there's a lot of questions and conspiracies. I expected Stone to present a more opinion oriented film but the way I saw it he just reinforces that there are legitimate questions. There's a lot of interesting stuff that makes you think and I may as well leave it at that.

It's a very big film that not every director could handle and it seems right in Stone's wheelhouse. Facts, ideas, and images come at the viewer nonstop and I think it would be hard to lose interest. It's a very deep cast with mostly positive results. I can't picture getting the urge to watch it again unless for whatever reason I got extra interested in the actual event. Nevertheless it was an excellent watch.

Once I even warned him if he does that he might find life has him too busy to finish. He told me it was his choice. I said fine as long as he actually finishes. And of course here we are and he screwed around and didn't finish. He's banned from joining any HoFs I host.

Black Orpheus (1959)

What has been a rather enjoyable streak for final films in these Personal Rec HoFs and on occasion in other HoFs where I had the privilege of going out with something astounding it, unfortunately, did not.
Which is a true shame considering the bright pageantry of color, song, and almost possession-like dancing all used for the background of an age-old love story; I honestly should have enjoyed this at some level or at least appreciated it.
Again, unfortunately, I could not. I instead grew impatient, waiting for it all to end. The dismal acting/overacting continually pulled me out of this surrealistic film to the point that even the music and dancing could not engage and entrance but instead added a cacophony to the slow ticking of the run time.

Where I would typically thank someone for their choice most profusely, I must instead beg their forgiveness that I could not find anything beyond the beautiful colors. Even the love story for which I do enjoy a beautiful romance seemed as frantic as the crazed dancing of Rio's Carnivale.

Black Orpheus was chose for me at one time and I believe I had it ranked as my #2. For me the visuals and the free style of film making captured a fleeting moment in a time & place that is now long changed...that then made the film special for me. Nope, not my choice for you.

I remember you enjoying this very much and at times I kept hoping that I would finally slip under the spell of Carnivale and it never came and most likely won't on another viewing.
I've seen several films just in this year alone with people picked from the street that I've truly loved but it seemed these folks did the opposite for me, sadly.

Rules of the Game (1939)

It's very difficult to watch a film like this and not instantly compare it to Lubitsch's work. An ensemble piece of individuals living in the period of time between WWI and WWII this is I suppose an expose and parody of the bourgeois lifestyle. And while I'm sure the film had an impact in 1939 I just came away from it with a sense of coldness and disinterest.

Renoir's use of blocking and shot selection is top notch and many of the apartments are filled with style. The issue is while the world is fascinating the characters are not. A story like this you really need to latch onto the characters and for me it was just a series of vanillaness.

The other problem I had with the film was the humor...at points it gets kinda slapsticky. A film like this should have a drier sense of wit or a sense of whimsy but pratfalls it just didn't work for me. I did enjoy the commentary track and watched it again to try and see what I missed it helped at points but still it just didn't work for me.

I watched Rules of the Game for an HoF some years ago. I didn't care for it but that's because there's so many characters with overlapping dialogue that I couldn't keep up with who was saying what. So once I lost 'my place' in the movie I had zero connection to what was going on.

I know what you mean.
The majority of my noms have landed around the lower-middle end of the final voting. It could easily feel that I simply suck at choosing films on that broad scale. BUT I have bounced from last to first on rare occasions, AND nearly all of my noms have had a vast spectrum of reactions, even for lower positions where there was an exception of someone who really loved it.
So, really, for me, it's finding something worthwhile and possibly lesser-known and hoping at least thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I did.

I could go with something iconic or what I feel is the more popular, but I've enjoyed the hidden gems that have become the majority of the films in these, so I try to stay in that area as a preference.

A big thank you for everyone who joined and seen this through to the end. I mean this takes a lot of commitment. First we have to pick out films for a group of people who's film taste we can only guess at. Then we have to watch a dozen films or so chosen for us and also write about them. Then we have to send in a voting list which in itself can be hard to compile. And of course the Host has to do all that and a whole bunch more. So everyone pat yourself on the back and lets do the Personal Recommendation V!

Here's mine. Most of which were truly great watches. Like previous Personal Rec HoFs, a lot of the mid-level films could easily rank high in a General HoF and if I could simply group them together would be much higher.
Though Born Yesterday, Grave of Fireflies and Le Jour Se Leve firmly fit the Top Three.

1. Born Yesterday (1950)
2. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
3. Le Jour Se Leve (1939)
4. The Searchers (1956)
5. Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987)
6. Shane (1953)
7. Captain Courageous (1937)
8. The Right Stuff (1983)
9. Grizzly Man (2005)
10. Woman in the Dunes (1964)
11. Black Orpheus (1959)

Hey Fredrick

Sweet! I won something. Thought I played it pretty safe this time around, nominating some pretty big films, you just hope you nominated them for the right person and I'm glad you all enjoyed them for the most part. The three I was most concerned with were Brothers Keeper, The Straight Story and MASH. Oh well, 2 outta 3 ain't bad. Sorry Takoma, don't know what I was thinking with MASH. I don't even like it that much, so why I chose it is a mystery.

As for my final tally, the top five are some heavy hitters and all were among the best films I watched this year and the next five were no slouches either. Biggest surprise had to be It's Such a Beautiful Day. That and Persona were the clear favorites for the top spot when all was said and done.

1. Persona
2. It’s Such a Beautiful Day
3. Memories of Murder
4. High and Low
5. How Green Was My Valley
6. Castle in the Sky
7. Touch of Evil
8. House of Wax
9. I Walked with a Zombie
10. The Conversation
11. Another Earth
12. Brief Encounter

Thanks for hosting cricket. Wasn't sure if we'd ever finish this but you did it. Can't wait for the next one.

LOL. I found The Shawshank Redemption to be thoroughly mediocre.

I am not at all surprised that people like it. I'm not at all surprised that people really like it. But I find it totally baffling that a lot of people LOVE it. It makes no sense to me.

The Shawshank Redemption used to be in my top 5 favorite films, but it fell out a while ago. In my experience, it was more of a gateway film for me rather than something which held up as I kept watching more and more classic films. I still like it quite a bit though. I think I have it at an 8/10.

I mean, yes. But I also feel like I could name 50 other films that I think have a degree of humanity and soul that puts Shawshank Redemption to shame.

Again, I don't think it's a bad film. Just very average.

It's like having someone tell you that the best food they've ever eaten was a McDonald's salad. It's not that I don't believe you it's just . . . clearly we have different criteria for what makes something a great salad.

I just don't like this paragraph because it comes off to me as sort of passive superiority, not that I think that was your intent because I don't. Change McDonald's salad to Maine Lobster and realize that you're in the minority. None of this has anything to do with how I feel about the movie.

I'm talking just about the feeling of everyone loving something you find average. I am well aware that I'm in the minority. I accept it. I don't hate the film at all. It just kind of baffles me. I totally get that everyone else thinks it's the fancy lobster!

I thought Shawshank was a very good movie, but not quite a great one, and, while I 100% get why so many people love it so much, I'd also say that the same reason they love it is the exact same reason why I didn't; it tries too hard to comfort/spoon-fed its emotions to the audience. As another poster explained on another forum once, the main message of the movie seems to be "People who seem good will continue to be that way no matter what their circumstances are", and I've always sensed a more challenging film lying within it, like what if Andy...

...really did kill his wife and her lover? Like, what if when Red goes to the field to retrieve the box of money, he also stumbles upon another compartment within it, one which holds Andy's murder weapon, confirming his guilt? The movie would obviously need some overall reworking to make that change work (as the "redemption" of the title would become Andy's moral redemption from his crime), but I think it would be more powerful if done properly.

Also, I really think it needed less narration from Red, possibly none at all; I mean, why do we need him to tell us that every man in Shawshank felt free as a bird when they hear Andy's opera record, when we were literally seeing that emotion for ourselves on their faces already?

https://youtu.be/Bjqmg_7J53s

I mean, what about this scene was improved any bit by adding that narration?

Shawshank Redemption is my favorite film of all time. I do understand that my love for it might have more to do with a very personal reaction I had to it when I first watched it, but then again, don't we all re: our favorites? Still, I would say that objectively speaking it is a pretty good film, but I understand those that don't see it as such, and I'm not bothered at all when people dismiss it. I mean, I don't care about Goodfellas or most Scorsese films, I didn't care about The Matrix or The Sixth Sense, as well as several other stances where I know I'm in the minority. But that's the beauty of both being a film fan and, of course, an adult. We can all disagree, and discuss and argue and joke about those disagreements, and everything will still be fine.

Yeah I used to get mad when people harped on my favorite films. But I really don't care anymore. If we all loved on the same films then it wouldn't be as fun. Plus, I harp on beloved films like Pulp Fiction so it's only fair.

When I first saw Shawshank I didn't like it at all mostly due to two things: Robbins and they changed/ left things out from the novella. That second thing there, I have that issue with most books that I like that get turned into movies. They just have to omit some stuff to fit a time frame and a lot of times even the simplest stuff in the novel adds to the overall story. Having seen Shawshank a few times now and having not read the story in over 30 years I can say it's a solid 4/5. As for movies that everyone loves that I hate, Annie Hall sucks and The Shining, with it's crap overacting, isn't far behind.

I don't feel threatened if people don't like my favorite films. That's because I know who I am and I value having an opinion that's not in line with everyone else...I can respect and understand different viewpoints on films too. In fact I find the reasons people like films to be interesting. What I don't get is how some people have an adversarial reaction to when someone pans their favorite film...That always puzzles me.
