So who's your favourite director these days? Doesn't have to be a single favourite, I find those absolutes change too often to be accurate. Ballparks are better because quality in movies fluctuate.

Nolan is up there. I connect with every film he does.

I like Neil Marshall and am excited for his chance at a big budget flick with Hellboy.

James Wan has impressed me and I might be the only person interested in Aquaman.

A few other up and coming people in horror too.

It's ok, it's my first time running it so it's ok with the amount of players I have right now. I shouldn't get too ambitious with things I'm not sure of.

But seriously, so glad you had fun. It really did feel relaxed and now I don't think I'll ever feel like I can't approach you. I hope anyone unsure about your being quiet sometimes reads this because you have a lot of warmth, and you chat more than people would think, just as long as there's something to talk about! :)

I still may hit you up about MoFoSoap. It might make sense to have only two writers who relieve each other and the actors go wild. Something to think about.

Now go have a FANTASTIC Taylor Swift free DAY! <3 <3 <3

Joel
11-11-18, 01:09 PM
Hi. I'm leisurely working on a film short, double color vinyl album editorial, black metal drum track, and later will be cooking a steak on an iron skillet with a necklace clamp phone cam because I'll be searing it.

How's it going?

cat_sidhe
11-11-18, 01:12 PM

I'm pretty chilled out. Lucky you. :D

Black metal drum track was played with my axiom 49(?) key controller, hooked into music recording software via MIDI. What I didn't realize was that once I started to use the on-board black rubber bank smaple pads on the controller, I could get a real drum feel with loudness/softness in my hits. Velocity sensitivity I think. So I'm glad that I didn't attempt to play the track with my fingers on the actual PC qwerty keyboard because I would't be able to have any ghost notes in there. But the track is the almost final touch on an adaption of a Bill Wyman score from 1981. An exotic latin arranged adult jewel heist movie.

iT'S A SECRET LOVE LETTER TO AN OLD HIGH SCHOOL CRUSH, WHOM i FILMED ALREADY. i TOOK THE OPEINING TO THE 1981 FILM BY m-oops caps, sorry..I took the opening designed by Maurice Binder (James Bond into guy) and replicated the shots of the gil. All decked out in emeralds. Rings, necklace, etc. She seemed kind of into it but probably scratching her head about why I proposed we do this.

I want to dirty up the footage I got by projection onto household items, and then mix my adaption of the romantic Wyman tune by giving it a black metal/gloom makeover.

It's just me on the instruments. Instead of strictly guitar power chords, I am mixing in actual full chords (IE-C) with power chords for a full and emotional sound. That way I can still call back to the original vibe of the Wyman version but be able to get away with heavy distortion. The bass is a lot of DEEEP power chords, like Lemmy style, except gloomier. That's why the whole black metal comparison. I know nothign about black metal, but from what I have heard, this resembles it.

Joel
11-11-18, 01:25 PM
She doesn't know that I have a crush on her as much as I really do. She most likely suspects I have it a little sweet on her. It's obvious, but I don;t pester her or call her up or anything clingy. It's very adult. Which is why this song and project is perfect for this. I can walk away unharmed (as can she), and we both have a trophy. It's better than nothing. Much better.

Joel
11-11-18, 01:33 PM
Yeah it is. It's a bit deranged, too. haha.

But I feel strongly about it. I think in a way it's a wonderful artistic gesture because it deals with actual desire and romance, and the work is based off of that. The technical side helps smooth out the reason behind it. I'm not in love with her but I have a little crush. Perfect fuel

I think it's like that for most people. The head part. Creative outlets help to some degree.

What about your job? How long have you been there? Do you hate it?

With the company, almost 2 years. In this particular shop, about a month and a half. Yeah, I kind of hate it. I'm good at it, but it's just not the right fit for me so it takes a bit of a toll.

Joel

Favorite aspect is I guess just the means to express opinions on film, etc..sometimes goof off when needed.

Most difficult..nothing anyone else does. It has become a bit of a habit for better or worse. I sometimes idly poke around when I'm trying to get motivated

I miss SC and wish I heard more from MonnoM about film shorts, etc, but he/she keeps up with new trailers well enough.

Last real relationship? Much too long ago to disclose. I'm an alone type of person. I still have the occassional fling but for solidarity - there's not only a lot to learn, but, part of the learning is learning how to choose someone who is right. It's incredibly difficult for me to fall ass backwards into a great relationship. I don't know if it's the geography or just not wanting to go to church functions, bars, or online dating, but, all of it turns me off.

Hope that answers your questions.:)

Right? What a day. The story leading up to it is even funnier but I'll save that for another day.

Pick-up lines..no. Not yet haha. I am soft spoken so, in a loud bar or show I'd be screaming into her ear. I hate that. I hate it when ppl do it to me.

If it was a place like Cheers, maybe. But where are those places? Nothing but big TVs blasting shltty sports and funky dishwater smells.

I absolutely settled for the wrong ones. Sex can be a powerful drug, and for it to even be considered soemthing like a drug, something is very wrong there. My choices have all had one thing in common with me - we never had a thing in common - except good sex drives. haha

Hey Joel. Just waking up and heard the static. Sorry I'm late to the show.

Seems you're pretty deep into music and video. What's the history there? Was that the case in high school as a starting point? I imagine we're right around the same age so were you running around with a friend's VHS recorder as a kid? I'm always curious on the inspiration side of things.

Same question for music.

You come off as very active. Quite the opposite for me as I procrastinate. I'm pretty sure that when I was born, I was all, "meh. I'll get around to it..." What motivates you to stay in motion? Is it even a consideration? Or are you naturally just an active personality?

Right? What a day. The story leading up to it is even funnier but I'll save that for another day.

No time like the present! This (and my lying game) is funny story territory. :D

Pick-up lines..no. Not yet haha.

I'd pay to see that, though. Like, only if you were completely ****faced. You know the kind of confidence tequila (the devil) gives? Yeah. :D

I am soft spoken so, in a loud bar or show I'd be screaming into her ear. I hate that. I hate it when ppl do it to me.

Are you attracted to quiet women or firebombs?

If it was a place like Cheers, maybe. But where are those places? Nothing but big TVs blasting shltty sports and funky dishwater smells.

"Hey there. I noticed you were sitting down alone.

Can I borrow $5? I'll pay you back with sex."

 God, sports bars here in the suburbs can be awkward as **** if you're English speaking and are drinking with another English speaker. You suddenly get an older, blotto Swede standing by your booth like something out of Paranormal Activities, watching you sleep. Then they awkwardly try to communicate. :goof: In city center it's not like that.

I started video back in 2012. Before that I knew absolutely zero about it. I've always been a film maker at heart, though. For sure. Even in HS I once skipped school, grabbed a vhs camcorder with no working electronic viewfinder, and filmed all the classes and hallways activity, including preppy girls out on the bleachers, interviewing them. I never got punished because everyone expected me. I was a serious nut in school. I did whatever I wanted. It was crazy thinking back on it. Embarrassing even. People just "gave up" on me. lol

Music was all my life. I'm not a prodigy or anything. I just enjoy it as an exercise or an activity. I'm interested in it, and it's relationship to people who make it, and people who listen to it. I stay active because I am trying to leave behind some kind of legacy. I don't want to just be the odd one who never got anything done. I want to have music and film be my questions and answers to life. Like a letter.

I prefer women on the more reserved side. Only because then I won't feel so bad when I am quiet. I like the quiet a lot. I think the test of a good relationship is being able to just be quiet together without the nervous urge to always be speaking in fear of awkwardness. I think more is said in quiet than when people are talking at each other, and let's face it, voices have gotten louder, and more knifey. I hear it everywhere. People are panicking.

Being comfortable together in quiet often comes with time, and btw the two aren't mutually exclusive. Firebombs can in the quiet together without a problem.

Have voices gotten louder? I hadn't noticed that. At least not here. Sweden's kind of quiet unless it's drunk. Then, not so much.

Oh, totally, I agree that loud ppl can be quiet. I just mean that I'm usually not looking for a constant talker because then I'd have to keep up lol. TBH, I really don;t know what type I am looking for. Probably because I don;t have a type, and I'm not really looking. I am celebrating the notion of romance with my work. I haven't.

On the cheek! My dad, by bros..sometimes a buddy..but I've never had a desire for a dude sexually. Ever. Even back in the pre-teen curious days, sure, I may have done a little bare chested male nipple sucking, but I wanted to vomit.

I compare it to reaching down a dirty garbage disposal to find a shiny ring, even though you know the ring isn't there.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen anything that good!

Let me think...

Best album of recent definitely A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead, even though it's a few yrs old.

Second up is Flaming Lips Oczy Mlody.

Hmm, for a movie?

I'd say Sideways, believe it or not. That was the last time I went to the cinemas and drove home with my friend and said out loud "that may be the best theater movie I've ever seen">

It's such an uncommon mix of teen comedy with middle aged men. Sophisticated but also broad and stupid.

Superman II

Incredible theater experience. I mean, for back then. Nowadays it's hokey and all that. But, I can still see what I liked about it. When the woman villain throws the man hole cover into superman's stomach, her voice is kind of delayed, like a slapback delay effect. Things like that made the movie kind of sophisticated and exciting. It was like an exclamation point in the sound mixing. The music score, those percussive concert drums hitting the toms, building tension. Stretchy string arrangements, queasiness in the music. It was a real spectacle.

EDIT: Actually, since the home video and or theater release the mix has been re-tooled so, it'd prob be a real adventure to find what I am referring to.

Oh man, BOND movies back then. They lost something later on, even though it's nothing against the people playing Bond himself... they just don't have the same magic as the older ones.

I had a conversation with someone recently about whether music is a dying art or not. He said no new genres have been invented in ages so it's dying. Of course I disagree. What do you think?

I definitely agree that no genres are getting invented because they aren't even really genres anymore. I think music is still alive, it's just not put out commercially anymore. I mean, yes, you have your Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Bobby Brown drum machine rip-off top 40..but radio is completely dead. Digital radio? That's another thing. It's what's happening now and changing all of the time. It's not settled anymore. You have to really dig for "good" music if you're serious about your music. And even then..it's a lot of melancholy. I still have yet to find something timeless and fun out there being put out currently. Like I said..you have your Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 stuff...but it teeters on the edge of the trash bin. It's not particular. It's a cash in. Doesn't matter they "play their own instruments". They're boring and unoriginal. That's the worst because the gestures they make promise yesterday, as if yesterday is all they have to offer in place of today's mediocrity.

Inspiration isn't dead, but maybe it should take a nap for a while because new music isn't fun for me..OK, I'M OLD! There, I said it.

You've always had to dig though. I think that a lot of new genres are simply filed as "avant garde" nowadays so it seems more stagnant than it is.

I have no idea what's passing for pop these days. It's seriously dire.

That brings us to the end of another edition of Cat Chat.

A big thank you to Joel, you've been great, and thank to everyone who called in!

Signing off with another tune from one of Joel's favourite music artists, Ariel Pink.

I haven't been spanked in a while is what I'm saying. I think I may need a real spanking.

I think I need to realign myself to finish off these drums and do the bass fixes, then do my projections for the film, and then cook my steak (in that order). I'd like to leave a few images of what I've been up to this weekend, creatively, as well as the source clip of the film intro I am adapting.

My kitchen as a makeshift studio for re-amping the footage I've shot. I'm projecting up the less flattering shots and saving the primo shots for just regular splicing in. Might be a cool thing.

Thank you, cat_sidhe for being a gracious host! It says a lot about you that you'd give the floor to someone and ask such bitchin' questions. It was fun!
