I guess I marry Russell and kill Peter? Or maybe I marry Peter and kill Russell because Russell's older and is probably going to die sooner anyway?
No. I kill Peter. Sorry Peter.
So wait, by this games logic, you can't f*ck who you marry? WHAT KIND OF MARRIAGE IS THAT?!?!?!

The technical term for it is "Alcohol Flush Reaction" but it's exceptionally common in Asian people. If I recall correctly, we lack a certain enzyme needed to properly break down alcohol and we end up overheating and "glowing" red.
I first learned of this on the show Fresh Off The Boat.

Aaah, that was one of my upcoming questions, actually. I noticed you have a penchant, if I may use a pretentious ****ing word like that for a moment , a PENCHANT for History. Particularly European history. Can you tell me a little how that interest came about?

Talking about history is tricky, bc I feel like people's minds shutdown sometimes when reading about something "old"
They're much more at ease reading or talking pop culture. And I get that
Truthfully, I'd say my affinity started with my own fascination into The Second World War, which I believe to be the BIGGEST humanity thing that's ever happened. But at the same time, in some ways, even that feels kinda ancient and distant

Eh, we already know a little of how you feel about pop culture, and more about that in a moment as that's on my list of things to get to, but first still a little more on this as it's interesting.
Do you remember what aspect it was that attracted you to The Second World War. Was it the carnage? I ask that because I once read a heavy tome simply called "The History of Mexico" because I was fascinated with all that human sacrifice, and how it all imploded.
We'll be opening the lines in a few minutes, after this musical interlude and word from the people who desperately wanted to buy into this particular programme.
Wonder why.

I don't think I've ever condensed it down like this to one thought. My stance is that European culture is totally integral and important to world culture, yet in a lot of ways I feel like Europe's cultural strength has been in a slump. So this became a fascination in an ongoing experience of classic Western-European culture.

In which ways do you think it's in a slump? I see a lot of creativity still on this side of the pond. If you mean Europe being less European, well...I look at weird things here, like are the old gods still respected because I live in Sweden, and that's a pretty progressive country. And yeah...they still are. Why I look at that? It's the whole dog/bush scenario. You can take a dog out of the bush but you'll never get the bush out of the dog.
That's how Christianity was able to even get foothold in Europe. Just take over the old important dates and transition godhead. Easy peasy.

From my perspective, from the living in the USA angle, I don't see classic European culture as being overly relevant in our immediate daily lives. On top of that, I know the Humanities studies in schools over here are being scaled WAY back. I don't think that's good.

No it's NOT a southern thang...Dudes watch a lot of ball games this side too. I always find it hilarious, and I give as I receive. I'm the one arriving inthe middle of ball games and mistaking the actual time ticking for a score and screaming OMFG THIS GAME IS BRUTAL!

Doubt it. Man rule #76. No free balling with beer in hand watching a game. Someone might knock at your door and you answer without thinking due to all the distractions.

Honest? No clue. It's a southern thang. Dad txting me a pic in which he dressed a Halloween skeleton in a bama (not Obama) jersey and a houndstooth hat this morning prepping for his game.
=/
Alabama's got at least a somewhat interesting game. Vs. Lousiville, right?
Also
If you're still taking calls, @Nostromo87 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=75536) is probably in khakis cargo shorts and a Tua jersey. If I had to guess.
Cat? Green sweatpants and long sleeve hoodie with cat ears
Maybe you misheard earlier, but I'm a GEORGIA BULLDOG. One thing I'll never wear is a Tua Alabama jersey. (He beat us in the National Championship game last year).
Any listeners/readers may be surprised how into College Football I've been in the past. I had a YouTube channel where I made highlights and got a hundreds of thousands of views. Shameless advertising and all gotta do it. Request if interested. But yea, will NOT be wearing Tua jersey!

Oh yes and honey, no. The weird thing is I got along with his as Des, but I'm a bit like that. I let people happen to me, and...just ride the wave, you know? It's all individual. I didn't like the jumping on his MoFo corpse, to be honest. I felt that a bit unecessary although I do understand why. It's still not that great to watch, especially if the guy was alright to me. I don't know. I think it's partly because what people think doesn't really shock me that much unless I peg them completely wrong and that doesn't happen often. I'm also of the opinion that you don't have to be completely alike to be friends. It's often the differences that make a difference in the long run, to the positive. At least that's been my experience.

No worries, I know you've been stressed out lately. A lot to do, little time in which to do it. But you've mentioned in another thread that you've gotten back into drumming. How's that working for your stress levels?

No worries, I know you've been stressed out lately. A lot to do, little time in which to do it. But you've mentioned in another thread that you've gotten back into drumming. How's that working for your stress levels?
Well, first I want to clarify. I'm not a drummer. My uncle was when I was kid. He's about 10 years older so I always kinda looked up to him. I always wanted to follow him in playing the drum kit. Back in like uh.... 4th grade, the high school band director came out and held an assembly to pitch beginner band for coming 5th graders.
I told him I wanted to play drums! He leaned down, put his arm around me and pointed to the largest bass and told me that would be what I would be carrying.
I picked Sax.
Anyway. To playing, it's helped relax a lot. I suck at it, but drums are unique. You gotta keep both hands and feet running independently of each other. That trips me up! But it's pretty exciting to focus and try to get into it at least. 1-2 hours daily for a few weeks. I totally suck, but that I've actually stuck with it is a nice change of pace for me. *Reference my abandoned monthly movie log for proof*
I should probably break up some of my winding replies into two or three lol. Sorry for the dead air!
But yeah. It's been inspiring. I'm horrible for commitment and motivation. At least for my personal goals. Usually I start up with all the lofty ideas and burn out before I even really get through the door. I'm jazzed that I've been able to maintain something for more than a few days and I'm hopeful that maybe this has been a missing keystone, if you will.

I have to say, getting back into the swing of things myself and I'm stuck on drum loops. I find them hypnotising. And I, too, suck. But sometimes I get a bit desperate and throw all my **** at the wall and see what sticks.

Did you have to reprogram your brain a bit in how you approach the creative process?
Correction: I *had. That was in my younger years. Things are more raspy now, sadly. I have troubles hitting those notes anymore.
Well, I mentioned sax. I picked that up in 5th grade. Like I said, I was a intimidated by the marching bass due to my size. I didn't really hit my growth spurt until like 9th grade. Anyway. When he opened the sax case and I saw all the keys and gadgets, and doo-hickeys, and thing-a-ma-bobs, I had to play it. It just looked like a giant metal puzzle, and that really excited me. Like a challenge.
I kept that up until my third year of college at which point I jumped out of my music major (despised piano). I had played guitar a bit by that point. No theory. Just thumbing around until something works. Picked up a drum kit about that time too. But it was stolen over christmas break.

Did you have to reprogram your brain a bit in how you approach the creative process?
Oddly, no. Not technically a change yet. I will say sitting behind the kit again has been inspiring. The technical side of it has me brainstorming old theory lessons trying to relearn to read sheet music. WTF reading sheet music?! I kind of abandoned that in my early 20s, so that I'm doing that now out of the blue is a curious thing, creatively speaking.
I guess what I mean is that all of my life I've associated creativity (my creativity of say writing, poems, music, drawing) with moods and emotions. It has always come in cycles for me depending on my mood. The sadder I am, the more I dive into one creative outlet or another. I learned that pretty young and I guess never learned how to correct that bad habit. And it is a bad habit, I mean to have it in your head that you must be thoroughly miserable to have creative inspiration or whatever? That's kind of messed up, and depressing in and of itself.
This weird drum detour has reminded me of technique and has forced a bit of structure back into my life---something I've forever been missing. I'm seeing this as a foot in the door, so to speak that may open up a few other things for me. Mostly though, I'm realizing that inspiration doesn't have to come from mood, which has been kind of a shocking revaluation for me =\ Seems obvious looking back, but damn.

@ynwtf (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=95589) What's the thing that connects you to your memories most. Sound, smell, taste or touch?
Hard to say. Mostly my memories come up from weird random associations. I don't think much of my head is very organized at all. Someone says something and I'm reminded of some line from a movie I watched when I was 7. Of course I have to then quote the line. Sometimes it comes out in meow form, especially if it's lyrics to a song. Tina Turner most of all. I might see something and it triggers a series of 4 or 5 linked thoughts until I land on whatever, then I just am kind on that new topic/memory.
I guess more to your point, I was just noticing earlier today that a particular smell took me back to my grandparents. That was surreal. My truck was given to me through their will. It was my grandad's truck, that went to my grandmother on his passing. She then left to me with her passing. From time to time I can step out and catch a scent of the earthy, oily, rusty undercarriage and immediately feel them with me in the cab. Maybe because they lived on a farm. I guess. But yeah, that specific smell does overwhelm.
Not sure that's a global thing with me though. Just this one for instance.

I was just wondering if you were the sensory type that gets transported through memory if triggered.
Would you say you're a bit of an empath?
Not really. Inspiration comes in many forms, and many an artist has turned to pathos as their muse.
Yeah, but I've always seen that for myself as very constricting and uncontrollable. It always scares me to let myself get too deep, where I've always been most inspired to make whatever. It's like I've always felt like I cannot create unless I'm depressed. It has always been that way for me and I have believed most of my life that I cannot write unless I'm over that edge. That's exhausting. =\
As silly and really as short as my experience has been again lately with drums, to push back and see that I have been inspired and motivated by something that is not at all breaking me down is good. I'm excited to know that not everything must come from some dark cave.

Maybe it's the solo thing that does that. Does it make a difference if you share the creative experience with someone else?
Also, there's at least half of us who get more affected by sad love stories than the ones with happy endings. The feel-bad that feels good somehow. It's like we want to be haunted, and it's in that state that we're able to create.

Yeah. That seems to be a blessing and curse, to be blunt. It helps to mediate disagreements for myself or others, and it gives me energy to nurture those around me but damn if people don't absolutely abuse that!

I RARELY share anything. Terrified of it. Self-esteem, lack of confidence, whatever. So no help there. If anything, doing so just puts me in knots and I'm too hyper-critical for my own good on that front. So no. SCREW PEOPLE!!!! HATE HATE HISS etc.
Matter of fact, in school if we had like a stage performance? I would down a glass of water about 20-30 minutes before the show so that when I was on stage I'd be obsessing over not peeing my pants just to keep from focusing on whoever might be watching or listening to the performance.
re: the haunting sad stories. Yeah, that's a tough topic. I like to think I have principles of good or bad. I believe what I believe and want to believe that whatever that idealist good is will overcome whatever adversities. My writing doesn't reflect that. My music doesn't either. I hear songs on the radio and they confirm the negative. Everything is a sad ending. In one hand that's confirmation that I'm not too far off track of whatever that something is. In the other, I question is it all really so bleak? Why are there no happy endings? Ideally there should be. I say that I believe in that, but get so frustrated with lyrics of resignation because I feel that's only the first half of any given story arc. Problem is, I never see the second half play out.

To be fair, you're more than just a bunch of random posts. You've often exploded in thoughtful text. And at other times, we love watching your mind ramble. Do you feel pressure to do more or is it more of an urge?
Wow so you prefer being by yourself doing everything... yourself?
For sure. I'm a bit of a control freak. Everything has to be just so. So there's that negative that I always bring to the group. Friends say they appreciate it because I can push things through, but I know it can be alienating. Then there's the whole self-judging bit. If I'm not just so then it's a failure. Full stop. No gray area. I mean, it is or it isn't. That's hard to keep in check when dealing with other people. It's also something easier to hide from others when there are no others! So just hide in my cave doing my thing and maybe one day I'll see my shadow, piss myself in fear and drop dead. Then someone can plunder my stuff and do with it what I never would have.

That rambling crap is impulse. It just happens. I wish I had more control of it, but at the same time I kind of excuse it with the idea that if I edit myself I'd probably just snap or something. Sometimes I feel like I downed a 3-liter of cola (hey we share liters!! YAY FARVA!!!!) and a tube of mentos (the fresh maker!). I don't mean to say that I'm gassy, just full of this freaky vibrating energy to ramble.

I'd rather spent more time in thoughtful reviews and conversation. I think that's probably still a confidence thing being relatively new to others 10+ years here. That's my bag, but it's still a bag.

OK well I did streak the neighborhood of this girl I was crushing on back in high school. I don't remember the logic in that. It was cold too. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I don't know. I might skip across gas station parking lots if I want to embarrass someone in my group. I tried to boogie board an irrigation ditch out near where I work, into a collection pond during hurricane season. That was pointless. I did have the snorkel, flippers, and goggles so at least I looked the part.

When I was a kid I always said I would grow up to either be a hermit, living in a cave and alone, or that I'd join a nudist colony. Take that how you will.
I noted earlier that I'm OK to take the spotlight and entertain those around me, as long as someone else isn't already there or in need of that attention. I don't like to compete for it. Fear of rejection probably more than anything. I can totally socialize but it's a pretty big obstacle to get over that initial wall. Why bother? I mean, I got my guitar, my movies, my whatever.
