Errr, no, we don't eat cats because we have access to chicken, beef, and pork. Also, dogs, but seriously, my country ought to get rid of that whole fiasco...
You know what's sacred in Korea though? Birds. People have rarely eaten them, even in desperate times, and killing some of them will get you jail time.
Poor chickens. Not classified as birds. What kind of jail time are we talking for the killing of a bird?

Unless they mean chicks....

Yeah, chickens get the short end of the stick. But hey, only God's to blame for making them tasty. :p
I'm not exactly bright on Korean law but killing a rare or endangered bird could get you around two to three years in prison. Most cases will probably end in a fine though.
What was your childhood like?
Happy for the most part... I had two loving parents who basically taught me not to be rude, which has done wonders for me. The reason I'm so good at English despite being Korean is because I lived in New Jersey for six years as a child. Got an education there and everything!

Do you miss New Jersey? Like, when watching The Sopranos did you get a little twinge of longing?

Hmmm, what part of Gangnam Style needs explaining? Cause Koreans don't know why the hell it blew up, either.

I miss how relaxed New Jersey is. Quiet, peaceful, and neighbors you can actually rely on. Seoul is great and all but it's often a hectic madhouse where people give you the cold shoulder.
Which reminds me, I need to get around to watching The Sopranos.

The THRILLER zombie stomp however....that makes complete sense.
How did you find MoFo and what's your favourite part of being on the site. What's the toughest part?

Oh my god, I imagined New Jersey was all mob wives who flip tables and call their enemies "prostitution whores".
Which reminds me, I need to get around to watching The Sopranos.
Hey I'll re-watch with you. I read pages and pages of people fighting over the ending. Yanno, when the Internet DELIVERS on entertainment fighting.

I love MoFo because of how crazy, nearly unrestricted, yet extremely personal and down-to-earth it is. I think it has to do with the members, who for the most part never fail to make me smile. Chatting with some of them has without a doubt helped me get through difficult times.
The frustrating side? It's inevitable, but: the cultural disparity. East vs. West. Tons of references I still don't get despite immersing myself in American pop culture for years. Also, I've always had a problem with truly connecting with other people (I blame high-functioning depression). Sure, I know a lot of people on MoFo, but do I truly know them? With the exception of Swan, not really.
As for Judge Judy, I used to watch her for quite a while a few years back. Her stuff is enjoyable and like a guilty pleasure to me. I've stopped being an avid follower but she'll always have a place in my heart. :)

I'm from the West and I don't even understand some of the UK and US cultural references. I don't even want to tell you how long it took for me to realise that "I'd hit that" didn't mean literally beating it with a stick.
Would you consider yourself shy or a bit more of the extroverted type? Do you initiate contact with MoFos in PM or are they normally the ones to approach you?

Yeah it created a huge furore so I doubt anyone could escape that spoiler. And yet....it spoils nothing. I'm actually excited you haven't seen it before. It's something great to look forward to!
Would you consider yourself shy or a bit more of the extroverted type? Do you initiate contact with MoFos in PM or are they normally the ones to approach you?
I'm very, very shy and someone who trained himself to act like an amiable person in public. Rarely do I send MoFos PMs about their private life, though once in a while if I see someone I haven't seen in a while, I send a "How you doing?" type of message.

That'd be awesome, but every time I get scolded by her I'd reply with a few silent seconds of admiration, then giggling. Perfect way to get a beating. :D

Yes, the penis park is true! I've never been there though. Here's a quick Wikipedia link that you can enjoy:

Now, I don't know anything about a poo museum, but if there's a penis park I guess it's safe to assume that poo gets sacred treatment as well.

Isn't that a bit self-isolating though? Or is it more that you're just not the first move kinda guy in a friendship or relationship? Do you open up if they initiate and it feels alright?
Personal question coming up...are you seeing anyone right now? Sorry to be so blunt, but you are in the hot seat. Don't worry, I won't cook your ass. ;)

Oh my god...just found this:
South Koreans are obsessed with feces, and everything from turd-shaped cookies, phone charms, and an entire museum devoted to poop can be found in the country. Toilets across the country also feature pleasant flushing sounds, background music, and colored water.
That is...beautiful.
And now for something completely different. I've heard that men love wearing makeup, and not in a drag way, just as a way to compliment their own features and take cake of their skin with good face creams etc. Is that also true or just legend about Korea?

I'm fine with people initiating, but I usually won't be open right away. My close friends say that initially, I struck them as someone aloof and indifferent, but who soon became a nice guy to be around. Interviews like this are a bit better though because I knew it was coming beforehand.
Unfortunately, I'm not meeting anyone right now. Just too busy with everything. The good part is that I don't feel like I'm missing out yet. I think we're all so obsessed with finding a significant other that we never look at the merits of being alone for a while. For me, solitude, under the right conditions, is a blessing.
I'm kind of jealous. You haven't had your cherry popped in ALL THAT!!!!!

Myth-busting time: I'd say 'across the country' is a bit of a stretch. You can usually find those toilets in high-end department stores or newly built highway rest-stops, but I agree, they're beautiful when you do encounter them. :D

God, face creams for men are HUGE in Korea. The trend comes from a unique Korean thought that men should be as equally devoted to taking care of themselves as women. Explains why a lot of people think k-pop idols are gay, but no, that's just the norm for young people.

I agree with you completely on that. I was alone for years before I found the guy I ended up with. When we met, I was completely content and happy all by myself even if that meant it would be life-long. It's actually kind of true what that cheesy George Benson (then coveredby Whitney Houston) said: learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all. And of course when I was a kid I interpreted that as playing with yourself is the best and you don't need ANYONE. Yeah, nobody should interview ME. EVER.

Yanno what? you guys have the right idea. Why shouldn't men look after their faces or look like prunes by 60?
In the same vein, is there a high consumption of fish oil and Q10 there? I swear....you know those little old Chinese ladies who NEVER SEEM TO AGE? They eat Omega 3s and Q10 like CANDY. Sometimes they buy collagen capsules too. They never seem to get older than 60 and that's just because you KNOW they must at least be that age. Sometimes they reveal their age and my jaw drops. No plastic surgery, just butt tons of fosh oil and Q10. Fuuuuck me.

I'm not British, but not liking proper tea is sacrilege and grounds for being punted straight into the sun.
If that happens do you withdraw in to stunned silence or do you blurt something you wouldn't really had you been prepared?
Stunned silence, followed by a slight stutter, which usually ends most interest a person has in me. The people who stick around though are in for a lot of rants about... stuff. :p

Loving yourself. It's something I'm working on fo sho. They say a little dose of narcissism never hurt anyone.
So what do you do for a living?
I'm a tutor. I teach SAT reading, AP English Language and Composition (basically an advanced writing course, American curriculum), and AP World History to mainly Korean students hoping to go to college in America. I used to be more focused on teaching Korean students a Korean curriculum, but I got a bit tired of it so that department is on hold for now. :)

Would love to visit Sweden someday. From what I've seen, it sounds like a great place to live. Is the education system there as effective as studies claim to be?

Omega 3s and vitamins are general trend here, though the high consumption of fish oil comes from the natural inclusion of fish, which is abundant, in our diets.
Personally, I've never been a fan of vitamins. Hey, if you're lacking Vitamin C, why not just sink your teeth into a ripe, juicy apple instead?

I have an inflatable mattress if you ever want to jump on an airplane! Yes, it is...it's pretty much the safest country I've ever lived in. Clean, too. the education system is quite amazing. People of all ages are always encouraged to keep studying, even in the 50s and 60s. There's no pressure to change your entire career by a certain age so you can sort of relax making the odd mistake with career paths.

I pretty much feel the same way. Although people here eat a lot of MacDonals in the day, or whatever fast food is all the rage. Here they do OD on vitamin D because of the long winter months where there isn't much sunshine. But the rest I reckon they take because they eat not as healthily as they should so they chug tablets to make up for it.
Does it annoy the flying **** out of you if you're having a stuttering moment and the person you're talking finishes your sentence for you?
Nah, it's better than having an awkward moment. You know what's annoying though? If the person moves onto a TOTALLY DIFFERENT topic, having lost his/her patience.
From reading your posts I'd never have guessed you weren't English speaking as a first language. do you ever think about moving to the USA or England/Ireland, some place that has English as a first language?
I've thought of living in a rural part of the US as a teacher... but the task of moving out and getting used to a brand new place feels so daunting to me. Plus, the whole tutoring gig is going well enough. :)

Oh lord, that feels like a global problem, not just a Korean one. OMG I WAS WANTING TO ASK YOU....what's it like having a crazy dictator for a neighbour?
Changing gears, I feel a little contrarian today, so... what's one thing about Sweden you wish you could change?
Just ONE thing? Alright, the one thing I'd change is I'd love for them to call a spade a ****ing spade. Like...they will always tell you it's totally free to see a doctor. You just have to pay an "admin fee" of 200kr. I always lose my mind at that. If ANY MONEY comes OUT OF MY POCKET, it's PAYING to see a doctor. I don't give a **** what you call it. Admin fee, my ass. It doesn't cost 200kr to type my name into the appointment register.
Swedes get offended when I say that. Because it actually DOES end up being completely free once you hit the 1000k limit. You just wave your id card and in you go. They misunderstand that I'm not complaining about the fee, I just want them to be HONEST about it. Say "yeah you pay a small fee but after the 1000kr limit, it's free!"
HOW HARD IS THAT????
What genre of movie is your favourite? And HOW PROUD are you of Korean horror?!?!?!
My list of favorite films says otherwise, but... ACTION! If a movie has a plausible story and great action sequences then hell yeah! I'm digging it. Example: I gave Michael Bay's The Rock a 4 and I will defend it until I die. Unfortunately, those two elements (story and action) are seldom woven together in a cohesive manner.
Hmmm, I'm not proud of Korean horror. We make good thrillers, that's a no brainer. Korean horror should receive more influences from films like Rosemary's Baby, not Paranormal Activity.
Not really 'horror' in a traditional sense but this is a good example of what Korean horror has the potential to consistently be: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

Oh lord, that feels like a global problem, not just a Korean one. OMG I WAS WANTING TO ASK YOU....what's it like having a crazy dictator for a neighbour?
Kind of nerve-wracking, but I'm pretty confident that North Korea will not nuke us. Why? They want unification, it's just that NK wants us to become communist. Of course, we want to preserve democracy, capitalism, and k-pop, so that's where the conflict comes from.
Also, because of that crazy dictator, I had to be in the military for 6 months! I mean, at least I didn't spend the standard 1 year 8 months, and I got to be a translator, but still...

Shoot 'em up all the way! Y'know, those over-the-top Hong Kong action films from the 80s? As a kid I thought Chow Yun Fat was the coolest human being to grace the Earth.

Thanks for stopping by MV. That's a tough question since I'm not used to authority. For changes: more emphasis on community-driven discussions. What happened to the monthly movie thing; is it still going on? For bans: anyone who pointlessly drags out lame topics *cough* gandalf *cough*

I'm a huge fan of Train to Busan and The Host as well, it's just that I don't classify them as 'horror'.
Shoot 'em up all the way! Y'know, those over-the-top Hong Kong action films from the 80s? As a kid I thought Chow Yun Fat was the coolest human being to grace the Earth.
Oh my god I had a huge crush on Chow Yun Fat. I still think he's hot!
What's your favourite meal?
Oh boy, now I'm getting busy... :p
Hey guys. Bear with me if you've covered this...
What's your favorite color and how does it make you feel?
What's your favorite movie and what emotional effect does it have on you?
Blue's the warmest color... literally. For me. Best movie title ever.
My favorite movie is a Korean modern classic named Oldboy. It's a film that repulses me, yet fills me with joy at the same time. I'm planning to post an updated review of it soon, where I can go more in-depth into why it elicits such a polarizing reaction from me. Overall, a masterpiece. [/QUOTE]
Hello, Gatsby.
What are your thoughts on The Great Gatsby? Any version will do.
Well, the book is one of my all time favorites. The poignant way Fitzgerald describes the Jazz Era... man, makes me want to re-visit it again!
The movies, however, don't do the source material ANY justice. The first two attempts are bland and unimaginative. Pass. The newest version is flashy and colorful, but lacks any substance really, which is typical of a Baz Luhrmann film.

Buffalo wings! I know, not a meal, but I eat enough of them to make it one! When I get stressed I go to a Korean-style pub, order around ten for myself, and wash it down with cheap beer. :)

I write screenplays; so far, I have one full-length feature and a television pilot under my belt. Just for fun though with no intentions of sending them to Hollywood. I also (attempt to) make music once in a while, but I usually end up quitting half-way into a song because I get discouraged by all the great music out there. :p

Yeah, that's the definitive Sting solo album.
The Police worked because all three members had distinct personalities that clashed with one another, fueling creativity and a sense of "let's out-do the jerk playing bass/drums/guitar". Sting's solo work is basically him telling accomplished jazz musicians to stay within the boundaries of his compositions. Kinda like how NOBODY challenged Lucas's views when he made the prequels.

He's amazing. I saw him live a few years ago in Stockholm and it was very intimate. He has an incredible voice, and he sings with a close mic technique so it's very personal, immediately. His band Japan was art pop/new wave, but his solo stuff is hard to peg down as some albums and projects range from alternative jazz rock to experimental avant-rock.
Kind of like when Talk Talk switched from pop to the style they adopted for Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden.
I'd highly recommend Nine Horses (one of his projects) which features Stina Nordentam, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Arve Henriksen. The album's called Snow Borne Sorrow.

My favorite artist right now is a British band named Kero Kero Bonito. You might have seen me fanboy over them. Consisting of three beautiful people, they concoct this weird mixture of j-pop, electronic pop, shoegazing, and these days, rock, which proudly shows off its influences while being astonishingly original.
I actually have MoFo to thank for expanding my tastes in music. Before joining the sight I just blindly listened to whatever the radio played. But then I joined MoFo's song tournaments and soon enough, I began indulging in all these classic rock albums I missed out. And for a while that's all I listened to. Afterwards, thanks to the efforts of Swan, Camo, and Kendrick Lamar, I also developed an interest in hip-hop. These days, I listen to any music without prejudice. Oh, except EDM. It still sucks.

The magic spin happens when I'm deep into things that I enjoy: marveling at huge drum sets that I can't buy :p or helping a student who's genuinely interested in improving his/her academic performance.
On the other hand, all the mundane things I do in life are met with two questions: (a) how can I get them done ASAP? and (b) do I really have to? Not much romance there.

Oh yeah, there's one guilty movie pleasure of mine I'd like to share:
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Literally what the title says. Lincoln, axe in hand, slays a bunch of vampires. What is he to do? Watch the movie and you'll find out...

I do. I have it with audio to colour. When I was an album reviewer for a site that no longer exists, I had a very tough time coming up with proper descriptive words as I'd tend to want to describe how "brown this album is!" Smells often put me visually back into a memory, but I don't think that's part of synesthesia

At first I wondered if it had to do with album covers, but that never had any consistency, as some artists would have a red album cover, but their music sounded light blue. I now think it has to do with general frequency levels, as I've never had high pitched albums sound "brown" for example. The brown albums would be bassier, more earthy sounding. It doesn't stay limited to certain bands, like if a band, say, Kyuss brought out a very brown sounding album, their next might sound more red to me.
I was actually asking because I've heard this sort of thing is more common in men than women, and I hadn't thought to ask any of the guys I've interviewed so far.

What's the best Korean food? If it's something well known in the West tell me a good lesser known one.
Have to eat more Korean food, i've liked what i've tried.

Kimchi stew! Not many Westerners know about it. Might be a little spicy for you, but it's every Korean's comfort food so worth the try. Plus unless the cook is an idiot it'll probably taste good in a restaurant. You could even try to make it at home.

I  Kimchi, but you're right i've never had Kimchi Stew. And nah i'm completely fine with heat, i know every white westerner says that haha, but i have an uncle who is a chilli head so i've grown up with spicy food. Sounds good, will try making it soon.
Thanks cat for being such a wonderful interviewer! I love all the energy you put into getting to know someone. Hope I didn't suck and answered some of the things you wanted to know about me. :)
If there are any lingering questions though, I'll try to answer them tomorrow... after I pass out in a few minutes.

I'm a big fan of extremely hot chilis. Like ghost peppers, Trinidad scorpions, you know...the type people challenge themselves to eat on youtube with hilarious results. I don't go below Habanero heat wise. That just disappoints me.

As usual, the lines will be open as soon as we settle in, the number is still 0-800-CATCHAT, and we'll still be trying to guess what our guest is wearing.
He's wearing tighty-whities and an old 70's era Disney hat with the propeller on top. Oh and red smeared lipstick with a poodle muttering something about lotion and the need to dig a pit one day. For reasons.
I totally got this.

Hi, hi, hi to everyone tuning in right now to CatChat on MoFoFM, 97.1 where we just heard from Pseudo Echo with a little tune called "His Eyes" from the fifth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise. Speaking of Part V - with me in the studio is Violetlvr, named after one of the characters in that film.
How are you doing today?

Personally, I can't relate to it very much, but I appreciate the dry humor Schultz inserted into the mouths of kids, dogs... even a yellow bird! Drawn today by a different person, I think Peanuts comics would have a bigger emphasis on immature, low-brow humor. Thank God Schultz's retirement meant the end.

Most things they try to remake now from the 80s kind of sucks. But. When someone gets it right, so right I feel like I'm in a time machine and went back to the 80s, I go a bit wild for the film and rate it highly. Probably too highly, but hey that's my kind of thing.
It's probably the same for 90s movies like Grosse Pointe Blank. Each decade has its feel...and stuff that fits it. The obsession with remakes nowaways, there's threads dedicated to that phenomenon here on MoFo. What's your opinion on that?

By top 15, do you mean the Favourite Films? YEAH I HAVE BEEN WANTING 20 FOR SO LONG NOW!!! Yoda *bats eyelashes*
Ok, so as I understand your reply, you wish for more friends on here. Do you feel that your youth plays a part in separating you from the rest of the board? You're not the only young member, but I can dig that it's hard to know who's who in the zoo. That's hard no matter what age you are. It also helps if people in a community aren't ageist, which works both ways, up or down.
What I can do it try and give some kind of heads up when I do commentaries (so far it's been me just...deciding ont he DAY what's happening so that's limited the action there somewhat, but it's often difficult for me to plan what I'll feel like watching on a certain day.
Would you like that? OR is there something you can think of that's better than that, that can help integrate you better? There's always something. Camo helped me integrate, so it's a bit of a hit that he's gone now...I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one he helped integrate into this community...

I'll DEFINITELTY let you know what's up with commentaries. I usually choose old stuff from the 80s. USUALLY. It's mostly horror because that's what I watch every day of my life. Every single day, I watch one horror, so it ends up being everything from the great to the absolutely awful.
I also try to not select foreign language movies to commentate on as I'm usually slightly tipsy, and I don't want to have to deal with reading, watching AND typing. My stance on that isn't solid though, and I suppose you're a bit young to be drinking, so all this must sound like bull**** on legs. Pretty sure I promised Zotis we WOULD do Angst at some point soon.
Hey Violetlvr
Glad to see you participating here in this interview. I'm sure the back and forth over these pages will give us all a better insight to your personality, opening doors for more here to reach out.
What brought you to this site?
And what happens when your lil stalker girl buddy shows up? Play ignorant and act like its not you? ;)

Another thing I can suggest, Violetlvr...if you are the type to log in at least once a day here, try the games section. It's a bit throwaway sometimes as a whole, but when you're trying to get to know people, it's not too bad to to a couple of weeks just playing the games on here. Like Music Tournaments, the guessing games, etc. If SURVIVOR ever comes up again, I can recommend it, but it's very demanding and emotionally destroying. Only play those if you're ok with all that. I DO recommend them, but I also don't. If that makes any sense at all.

My love for filmmaking, good idea most likely, imagine long duck dong but female
So films. You want to direct, is that correct? Do you have an outlet now to try it? Some schools have media centers with decent equipment that students have access to. Mine was dirt poor so not a chance, but we still goofed off with parents' VHS recorders. I guess everyone can beat that now even with a cheap phone.
So do you try to create anything now? Video, music, writing, whatever?

Agreed. I see your posts in shout from time to time but it seems like you're about an hour or two too early for to start q convo there. It moves so fast too, it's easy to miss something if it falls a page or two down.
I think my first 'participation' was song tournament. That lasted a long time, forced my interactions with others, and gave me a window to share micro reviews on the songs in each round. People seem to respond to that. And it went on for DAYS so it helped me recognize names more and to associate personalities with the names.
YOURE WEARING wait. Was that the Adidas thing? Damnit! Nevermind ;)

Huh. Slasher script? You should wrangle up a trusting friend or two and brainstorm a small scene from your script.
Plan out a few angles, setting, and see if you can pull it off? Even if just a 2-minute clip it could give you some real experience setting up framing, minor edits, and dealing with and managing others ..in a director role I mean.
