No point in making a long post everyone knows the deal by now, here's the tv show (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=50853) and movie stars (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=51175) countdowns i did in case you want to brush up. Thanks a bunch again to Sexy Celebrity for making the picture. Very sorry in advance if i made any mistakes, i don't think i did but it's certainly possible. If you notice a mistake and you bring it up i probably won't see your post until the end of the Countdown as i usually don't stop and read posts much, i'll sort it out at the end. We got 44 lists, 53 made the Countdown and 293 in total were voted for, thanks to all of the members that sent lists:

The Pixies were mine. Surprised no one else voted for them as Doolitle and Surfer Rosa were on the Albums Countdown iirc. Oh well.

Fleetwood Mac only got one point? That was one of the few of mine I thought had a chance at making it.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/10fleetwoodmac.gif

This one is kind of a cheat. I couldn't decide who to put at number ten. I thought maybe Walter Egan or Billy Burnette or even Bekka Bramlett. But ultimately I decided that Fleetwood Mac would be the better choice because Fleetwood Mac isn't one band. It's many bands from many decades, featuring a variety of artists.

So it's not really Fleetwood Mac I'm voting for. It's Billy Burnette, it's Bekka Bramlett, it's Bob Welch, it's Danny Kirwan and Peter Green, it's many of the better works of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, and while Walter Egan was never part of the band, his close association to them sort of lumps him in with the rest in my mind. And, of course, it's also a way to give further representation to a certain guitarist I admire.

Nevermind, I'm blind. Didn't see my number 9 at first.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/09live.gif

I was in junior high when I first became aware of Ed Kowalcyk and company. I don't remember which of their songs I heard first but I remember being obsessed with Lightning Crashes. I just loved the words and Kowlcyk's voice. I begged for their CD and once I got it I listened to Throwing Copper ad nauseum. It's still one of my favorite albums and their songs remain in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Looking at my ballot now, I'm not sure why the hell I had them at 9. They probably should have been 6 or 7.

Three pointers lists, three of mine to show.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/08matchbox20.gif

Another case of me absolutely falling for the voice (and looks) of a band's singer. Matchbox 20 first hit when I was in high school and just sneaked under the wire before my tastes began to shift more in favor of classic rock. There's a certain richness to Rob Thomas's voice and to the simplicity of his songwriting that I find really appealing.

I had Matchbox 20 at #8 and I love Rob Thomas, but I have no idea why I had them higher than my #9.

Four for four.

Michael Hutchence was a total package of sex appeal and talent. Even as a child watching MTV, before I knew really what being sexy even was, there was something that drew me to him. The music of INXS was a fixture in my house growing up as well with my mom's cassette copy of Kick getting regular play. Sadly, Hutchence died in 1997 and as far as I'm concerned, that was the end of the band. Forget Rock Star. There is no INXS without him.

I had INXS at #7.

I'm on a roll. A very sad roll.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/06warrenzevon.gif

As was the case with several other artists on my ballot, I discovered the music of Warren Zevon as a result of his connection to other artists that I loved. Unfortunately though, that discovery came a little late and he announced that he was dying of mesothelioma about a year after I had begun to explore his music. I must admit that I'm not as familiar with Zevon's body of work as I ought to be, I didn't go as deep in that exploration as I should have, however the songs I do know proved him to be a gifted songwriter and storyteller. Some of them are beautiful and heartbreaking - particularly those from his final album - while others are raucous and wryly funny. And that gift was strong enough to land him at number 6 on my ballot.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/03darrenhayes.gif

Darren Hayes rose to fame in the 90s as the singer for the Australian pop duo Savage Garden. But after only two albums, Darren Hayes and bandmate Daniel Jones went their separate ways. Hayes would go on to release four solo albums plus a side project called We Are Smug.

The music of Savage Garden was catchy and I liked it a lot when I was a teenager, but I sort of lost track of Darren Hayes after his first solo album. I rediscovered his music a couple of years ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I think his voice is incredible and I really admire his songwriting. Unfortunately, he's essentially given up on music and has been pursuing a career in improv comedy but there's still plenty to love and he was my number 3.

Buckingham was mine, of course.
http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/02lindseybuckingham.gif

Anybody who has participated in a song tournament with me should have known he'd make my list. If there is a musician equivalent to Joaquin Phoenix for me, it's Lindsey Buckingham. He's incredibly talented and damn sexy. His guitar playing is mesmerizing and I adore his voice. I've seen him in concert eight times, I think, between solo and Fleetwood Mac shows and have been a fan since I was 16.

Still, he's not quite my favorite artist and is just about a hair's breadth behind one other musician and is number 2 on my ballot

I Mother Earth was my #4. I think they're the only Canadian group on my updated list, but I originally had 3 or 4 on there haha. After their singer left the group, he was replaced by a guy from Newfoundland, but I didn't like him. Summertime in the Void wasn't bad, but I didn't like any of their other songs with him.

Nobody else voted for Tom Petty?!

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/01tompetty.gif

Anybody who knows anything about my taste in music knows that I am a Tom Petty fan. Throughout my life, his music has been one of the few constants. Growing up, the TV was nearly always tuned to MTV – back in the days when MTV actually played music videos – and Tom Petty’s videos were some of the coolest. But more than that, his music was incredible. The man knew how to write a song. He knew how to infuse his sound with humor and emotion. And even though he wasn’t blessed with an objectively good singing voice, he always sounded just right for the music he made.

One of my earliest memories is browsing a music store at the local mall. My mom told my brother and I that we could each choose a tape to buy. He chose Howard Jones. I made the wiser choice and selected Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever. It was the first album I owned by any artist and remains a favorite today. I’ve seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert four times. I own cds, records, DVDs, VHS tapes, t-shirts, posters, and keychains. It was also through his music – either directly or indirectly – that I discovered my love for many of the other artists that graced my ballot and that fill my iPod.

His recent passing was a heavy blow to me and it still doesn’t quite feel real. But he left behind him an impressive catalogue of work that I will forever cherish.

My Hillary Clinton comment. One minute, it's there. Then, it's back. Then it's gone. Then it's back. It's weird.
I still see it. It's a page back now though. I guess another post earlier in the thread got deleted.

Edit: It was a page back, now it's back in its original place. Weird.

Finally!

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/04bobseger.gif

I don't know when it was exactly that I first heard Bob Seger. His music wasn't something my parents had ever really played when I was growing up. But through the classic rock radio stations I tuned into as a teen (because I'm weird like that) I began to notice this certain warm, almost raspy voice that told well crafted, simple, but interesting stories. And I kept wanting to hear more.

Though my interest in music has waned a bit over the years, being replaced by a more intense interest in movies, I still love that warm rasp and had Seger at number 4

Clapton is not god, but he is great.

http://www.angelfire.com/music6/walteregan/10MusicArtists/05ericclapton.gif

Although when I was growing up the sounds of Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, R.E.M., and U2 were probably heard the most coming from my mother's stereo, the soft voice and skilled guitar playing of Eric Clapton was also a frequent sound in my home.

It's a sound that has never stopped being a constant in my life. I had him at number 5.
