View Full Version : Top 53 Music Artists Countdown
I better come out of the closet - the Smiths are my fave '80s band.
The Smiths were as "tight as a gnat's ass"!

I have no idea who they are so he should've specified.
Luckily it doesn't matter since they weren't making the Countdown anyway haha.
Most people only know of NSP because Dan is part of Game Grumps, a popular Let's Play channel on Youtube. I assume that's how Hash knows him, which would explain why he gave Dan's name instead of NSP. Unless he was naming Dan because of Starbomb (which is Ninja Sex Party + the other host from Game Grumps).

Country singer who died not long ago.
If he was still alive, he wouldn't be on this list.
I'm assuming gbg voted for him, as did I. So he would have been on the list. Don't disrespect the Hag.

Oh man, this is lovely. I like how the bass carries it all, with the lead melodies screwing around up top...interesting...sick synchopated kick drum patterns
Right, it all fits together to make one great sound... I think many would love their first album; they just never made it on the radio with 8 minute songs.
It wasn't gbg that had Haggard! Not sure who it was, i'll check in a minute.
Miss Vicky

I’m not disrespecting him, but if he hadn’t died, maybe he wouldn’t have been on your minds as strongly as perhaps other people. Simple psychology.
By this logic, Tom Petty should've gotten plenty of votes since he's been dead for less than a month.
But nope. Just me. :(

Roger Hodgson (not Hodgkins, sorry) has left the building, my friend....
this is what was left:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvfoyXfcwVU
I had a friend who LOVED that song, and he loved Supertramp almost as much as I did...
I hadn't heard "Cannonball" in a long time (for good reason).. It doesn't even sound like them! It was the mid-80s, and they tried that fake instrument junk hoping to become relevant again.... na..... you can either be an artist, or a salesmen, rarely both.
That's why I saw Hodgson three times... Supertramp never came near me, anyway, and I don't wanna hear another guy sing those songs...
The only great songs were done BEFORE he left the band... The title-track (which was extended) and the song "Better Days".
What happened was music videos, and they weren't a band with sex appeal... AND losing your main writer/vocalist/guitarist/keyboards (even bass the first album).
That saying, I think Rick wrote some of the best Supertramp songs...
-Crime of the Century
-Rudy
-Just A Normal Day
-Waiting So Long
-From Now On
-Another Man's Woman
The hit he wrote was because he tried sounding like Roger, with "Goodbye Stranger".... Conversely, they each play their best solos with the other guys' song.
It's interesting because Davies without Hodgson, and vice versa..isn't the same..
and at the risk of sounding cliched...that's what was up with Lennon/McCartney, too, imo...
pieces of a clock that never kept the same time once those pieces broke apart.
I mean, why else is George Michael on the list at #20? Come on! If Jimi Hendrix had just died, you know he wouldn’t have been forgotten.
My mum had him at #3 or something and i can assure you she was just as big a fan when he was alive. Can't speak for anyone else that voted for him but i wouldn't be surprised if it was the same.
I mean, why else is George Michael on the list at #20? Come on! If Jimi Hendrix had just died, you know he wouldn’t have been forgotten.
There's just so many great artists..hard to keep tabs on even the obvious ones..like Hendrix...
Crosstown Traffic..I said Uh'!
Christine was the other one that had Haggard.

and the vid was awful..shlt..IS awful!
Planet of the Apes and shlt...ewwwkkk
The idea - to commit Your mum was super:)
Tom Petty follows different rules of logic. Nobody likes him.
I like Petty...
I remember an old Guitar Player magazine with an article of him saying"I wish people would recognize my guitar playing more"
I never forgot that, and since then (1989), have always payed attention...he's no George Harrison, but he's solid.

His career lasted for 40 years and would've continued had he lived, but "nobody likes him." Right.

I sent Camo's mom a song called My Ass is on Fire.
Was surprised Petty got no more votes. Thought his death would play into it like SC was saying. I think most people just voted for what they wanted to regardless of recent events. I mean Prince definitely moved up a few spaces in my favourites when i revisited his stuff after his death but he would've been in contention for my list before that anyway.
His career lasted for 40 years and would've continued had he lived, but "nobody likes him." Right.
He died like my own mom died...brain damage from comatose....
he's got my vote in one way or another
I sent Camo's mom a song called My Ass is on Fire.

8. Led Zeppelin
7. Groundation
6. Rammstein
5. James Brown
4. The Comsat Angels

Soundgarden didn't get any votes i don't think and Cornell died recently. Linkin Park got Dereks vote but he's probably the most well known fan on the forum so his death obviously didn't play into that.

I think Waters/Gilmour was the most complementary ever... Gilmour never wrote lyrics, and Roger wrote them all... But, Gilmour made everything better. Many times, Roger would give David the song to sing, and he'd add a great solo every time... Lennon could write great music, along with great lyrics of course, and I actually prefer their solo stuff to The Beatles.

I kind of let krautrock down in my list, and felt guilty about it when we started talking about krautrock in another thread. I'd love genre based music tournaments/countdowns.
I saw Faust live in Oslo a few years ago. WOW, that was awesome. Funny watching Norwegians dodge anglegrinder embers.
to quote Harvey Weinstein;
"I don't cut for fun.
I cut so the shlt will work".
cricket i saw you point out that The Talking Heads were on the three pointers as well as the countdown. What happened was i forgot to delete them from the three pointers when they got more points, they were in the right place on the countdown, deleted them now. Haven't went through the whole thread so if i missed anything sorry and i'll sort it out when i see your post tomorrow.

Well, tjose are defintely headlines, and I can't speak for that except I hope he seeks help, and I hope everyone get their settlements.
Aide from that,..
we have many late 1980's indie films to ponder, where Harvey was the ringleader for expiosure and acclimation into the US market. Let's not forget the pioneering days.

I kind of let krautrock down in my list, and felt guilty about it when we started talking about krautrock in another thread. I'd love genre based music tournaments/countdowns. i love too

She's a Nazi whaaaa? That makes me sad.
Yeah from wiki:
Nico was described by some friends and colleagues as racist. Her friend Danny Fields, the American journalist who helped her sign to Elektra Records, described her as "Nazi-esque", saying: "Every once in a while there'd be something about Jews and I'd be, 'But Nico, I'm Jewish,' and she was like 'Yes, yes, I don't mean you.' She had a definite Nordic Aryan streak, [the belief] that she was physically, spiritually and creatively superior", a view she appears to have continued to maintain throughout her later years. According to Fields, Nico once attacked a mixed-race woman in a restaurant with a smashed wineglass, saying "I hate black people". During a performance in Berlin, the audience rioted after Nico performed the German national anthem "Deutschlandlied", including a verse omitted since 1945 for its nationalist associations.[23] However, Nico dedicated this performance to militant Andreas Baader, leader of the anti-fascist Red Army Faction.[24]
Too bad she was great:

I'm the only one who voted for AC/DC?!?! I want a recount!
I would have, but in all honesty didn't take this seriously.
Can someone PLEASE explain how this thing works, this countdown?
Very confusing to me and I can't read 53 pages today, sorry!
Sorry if someone already answered this i didn't see it. You sent me your top ten so your #1 gets ten points, your #2 nine points etc down to your #10 getting one point. I add them all up then that's the list. For these Countdowns i included a rule that an artist had to have at least 10 points and be on at least two lists to make the Countdown so it wasn't just one person that liked them enough to include them.
In the other Coutndowns with two posted per day lists are top 25 instead of top 10.
I would have, but in all honesty didn't take this seriously.
lol you didn't take this seriously because "your taste was so obscure" and you would have included AC/DC :rotfl:
AC/DC? Who? Oh wiki tells me they are a small town Australian band.

No i think what happened was you had no confidence in your taste which is why you said your taste was super obscure then you sent a ridiculous list.
Whatever i had the choice to count it or not and i did coz i liked the idea of Shaq getting a vote.

Think that's it, people will get/already have got sick of them. Would have loved to do a book one but i seriously doubt that would be possible on this forum.
Maybe we could make the movie stars an annual or bi-annual thing since it changes all the time and i doubt it'll ever get a proper countdown, if so i'd be happy to host it again.
I didn't mean bi-annual as in twice a year, i meant every two years. I do that all the time

The TV one died because i stopped bumping it at one point/wasn't here for nearly two weeks. I just don't think more than maybe 25 would send a list (and that's generous) and we'd need double that more than likely.
Not many post about books here, i know that doesn't mean they don't read but it does mean they've not got that much interest in discussing them online and several of the most well read members like Linepalsy aren't around much.
Would love to be proven wrong obviously.

Larsson is better than Ibra, he just played at Celtic for all of his prime without the same support as Ibra had for most of his career.
I'd also like to add that if a book countdown does go ahead, I think quite a few people might need time to re-read things to finalise their lists

I don't know Nabokov, I'll have to check him out.
Nabokov was a Soviet Novelist who fled the SU and went to America where he started writing in English and was just as good. Lolita is his most famous Novel, The Gift is his most acclaimed Russian one and Pale Fire might be his most acclaimed overall. Also his autobiography Speak, Memory is often high up best non-fiction book list. Pnin is the only one of his i've read so far and i thought it was excellent, it's only like 140 pages so it's a good starting point. Next i'm reading The Real Life of Sebastian Knight from him. He's also well known for hating everyone including other authors and even his readers, although some just think he was an early troll haha.
Not read any of the books on your list but i want to read several.

Sounds awesome. I have one Tolstoy, Love and War or something like that. It has a caption that says it's the greatest book ever written, so I just had to buy it. I think I payed like $3 for it. Books are so cheap.
Oh the Dada Manifestos are incredible, but I only read a couple chapters so far. I was just dying to get my hands on anything by Tristan Tzara, but Dada Manifestos has multiple authors. Anyway it was interesting when I saw Kate Blanchet's movie Manifesto, because there is stuff in that movie that's word for word from the Dada Manifestos. It's also interesting because I've been reading a bunch of C.S. Lewis. He takes the road of logic and sense while Dada throws logic out the window and openly contradicts itself. Dada changed a lot about how I think about art, but I only just began to scratch the surface.

War and Peace? Really want to read that, sounds like alot of effort though so i'd need to do it when i have a fair amount of time. It's very long and apparently has hundreds of characters who all play big parts, it's supposed to be pretty annoying to keep track of. It's set in Russia during Napoleon's invasion and is about the royal family/nobels. Will probably read Anna Karenina before that.
1. Beer

Pffff, I drink chocolate milk all the time. It doesn't come close to Belgian Trappistes. You drink beer brewed in a five hundred year-old monastary by Monks who've perfected the art and then come back and tell me something as entry level as chocolate milk compares. I'd give you some footing if you at least said Milkshakes.

According to Goodreads it's 1392 pages. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/656.War_and_Peace
Anna Karenina is around 1000 though so not much difference.

Oh i missed Hamlet, yeah Hamlet is amazing.
The only Tolstoy thing i've read is his takedown of Shakespeare (and Orwell's response) love that sort of stuff even though i'm a big Shakespeare fan. Same with great Directors badmouthing each other.
Tolstoy on Shakespeare:
"I remember the astonishment I felt when I first read Shakespeare. I expected to receive a powerful aesthetic pleasure, but having read, one after the other, works regarded as his best: "King Lear," "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet" and "Macbeth," not only did I feel no delight, but I felt an irresistible repulsion and tedium... Several times I read the dramas and the comedies and historical plays, and I invariably underwent the same feelings: repulsion, weariness, and bewilderment. At the present time, before writing this preface, being desirous once more to test myself, I have, as an old man of seventy-five, again read the whole of Shakespeare, including the historical plays, the "Henrys," "Troilus and Cressida," "The Tempest", "Cymbeline", and I have felt, with even greater force, the same feelings,—this time, however, not of bewilderment, but of firm, indubitable conviction that the unquestionable glory of a great genius which Shakespeare enjoys, and which compels writers of our time to imitate him and readers and spectators to discover in him non-existent merits,—thereby distorting their aesthetic and ethical understanding,—is a great evil, as is every untruth." I have heard people say that's one of his least accessible ones but it was the only Pynchon at the book shop the day I went there. I probably will hold off on it and instead go for one of his more accessible ones like Crying of Lot 49 or Inherent Vice, which I would like to read the most because it might change my opinion on the film.

Go for it if you want i haven't even read it all, read like 300 pages last year and was enjoying (most of, some of it is just...wtf!) it, ended up having no time for reading so i dropped it and feel weird starting from that point again. It's just really long and dense, it would probably help you enjoy it if you got used to his style and themes wit one of his more accessible ones. Think Crying of Lot 49 would be perfect as it's similar to Gravity's Rainbow. Well those two are the only ones i've read so maybe i shouldn't be giving advice about him haha.

Excellent stuff Camo. Cheers. I couldn't join in for the countdown but just caught up. So who was the other MOFO that conspired with me to get Nick Cave into the top 50?

3. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
4. Max Richter
5. The Cure
6. Clint Mansell

Who had the Ulver nomination? Kind of want to smooch that MoFo. :)
Did anyone else's list completely miss the countdown, or was I the only one?
Not sure off the top of my head, maybe Zotis? JJ voted for George Strait btw.
I did for George Michael.
George Michael being #20 is actually kinda ridiculous. But who died last Christmas?
George Michael.
George Michael would be nowhere near my top twenty so i personally agree he shouldn't have been there, but only two members voted for him: Camother and Ms.M. It's not as if loads had him, it just so happened those two had him very high giving him a lot of points. What happened more than anything was a select few bands/artists got tonnes of votes and everything else was well spread out allowing those two to get George into the top twenty. As i said my mum would have had him that high before his death, Ms.M said the same.
Excellent stuff Camo. Cheers. I couldn't join in for the countdown but just caught up. So who was the other MOFO that conspired with me to get Nick Cave into the top 50?
Iroquois. As i said i probably should have had them on mine, i just made my list very fast then didn't want to change it to be fair.

Joel.
When i was doing the songs things for the pointers posts i intially wrote Neil Young instead of Neil Diamond for gbg's ten pointers one. Thankfully i caught it at the last second, imagine none of gbg's made it and i posted the wrong guy :(.

Something went wrong with the numbering, but these is the artists I picked for the showdown:
Frank Sinatra
Marina Diamandis
Joey Ramone
John Lennon
Serj Tankian
Corey Taylor
Willie Nelson
Ray Charles
Sammy Davis, Jr.
Carly Rae Jepsen
I don't know if I would slightly change the list now, but all of them deserve my respect. Some of them I grew up with, others I've discovered or started to love later on. If I have a bad day, there's nothing better than a little Marina or Carly Rae

yoooo
(though as with pretty much every list I submit for one of Camo's countdowns it's not terribly well-thought-out but whatever)

I'm glad you caught your mistake before posting. Neil Diamond is my favorite singer, but I think I only know one Neil Young song, so he had no chance to make my list. I'm not upset, (or surprised), that none of the artists on my list made the countdown, but I wouldn't have been happy if you got that wrong.

Yeah me too. I literally just chuck out what I'm digging that day bar 3 or 4 staple fixtures. Of which Nick Cave would be one.

Oh, of course I would!!! God-damn it!
The fact that I forgot to include Barry Gibb and George Michael, two of the greatest voices of all time, is absolutely unforgivable! :frustrated:
After listening more closely to Elvis Presley yesterday I can definitely confirm he deserved to be that high up. What a "swingin'" cool voice!
I've never really cared for Madonna, but I loved her in Desperately Seeking Susan.
I am legitimately astonished Frank Sinatra didn't even make the list :(

Not surprised, not complaining either. The Beatles are rock solid.

I had Ulver, and all because of their newest album...their first true masterpiece, imo.

Totally different kinds of prog but uh...to DT's credit, though...that early instrumentation was pretty groundbreaking. Too bad James LaBrie had to sing on it lol

No correlation between the two. In the beginning of Dream Theater's "every song must be a homage to another band" phase back in the early 2000s, they did two Tool-influenced songs "Home" (from SFAM) and "The Great Debate" but they still sound nothing like Tool really.

Seriously, Captain Spaulding? You (much like Iroquois) like Prince THAT MUCH?
Again, if Prince hadn't died last year, I really wonder if Prince would have still shown up on all of these lists.
I've always loved Prince. The only time I've ever called into a radio station to request a song is when I was middle-school age and requested "When the Doves Cry" one Friday night. I also starred in the music video thanks to you (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1215424#post1215424).
I posted basically the same top ten in matt's thread (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1185799#post1185799) three years ago, only difference being I've now switched out The White Stripes for The Who, but pre-corpse Prince was in there then. So was pre-cadaver Bowie.

Yeah, one thing that I questioned is whether or not I judge/rank artists purely by how I rate their songs/albums or if I just rank them by my overall gut-feeling impression of them. If I were to judge artists by how many five-star albums they had (or just their average album score to compensate for different-sized discographies), then my list would probably be different even as I'm not so sure it'd reflect how I truly felt about the artists in question. I just went for the gut in the end and I don't think the results are too bad - better that than to settle on the boring conventional answers because they'd done enough albums that counted as "classics" or what-have-you.

Same, my instinct is to rank by number of albums of theirs I have, but that might be their entire discography or only a fraction, and my overall appreciation still varies besides.
