Good to see the natural order restored with a routine NI win over Ukraine. The upset against the plucky underdog Poles had knocked us for six so hopefully the same thing won't happen against Germany.
The Germans are a bit of a bogey team for us - we've only beaten them twice - so we'll need to be cautious early on, lest one of their part-timers causes an upset. ;)

Italy-Sweden today. I hope Italy plays with the same commitment as they did against Belgium, and I really hope they don't slip up against an inferior team. It's become a genuine worry lately.
Italy won their first game, they don't need to chase a win and that is a win in itself for them, they know how to play on a result, wait, wait, score, win.
i hate the song they keep playing,it sounds like a eurovision reject!

Hmmmm ....
woke up this morning and only had one clean pair of underpants left (rest are waiting to be ironed) ... a green pair
went to put toast on ... no dice as the bread was going decidedly green
looked out the window and saw a child looking very unsteady on a bike with a parent walking alongside holding the handlebar ... yep, definitely green
I'm convinced it's all pointing to something .. if only I knew what

A very spongelike first half performance ... can they possibly manage 93 minutes of that without breaking followed by a freak ricochet in the dying seconds as the Belgian goalie hoofs a goal kick off the back of the legs of one of his defenders and into the back of their net?
Ya never know. Well, okay, you probably do. But, at least for now, we can dream :D

I'm getting nervous now - Upsets can happen in championship football.
Don't want the situation that England found themselves in last night - We'll no doubt be camped in the German half for most of the match but need an early goal to settle us down. Hopefully the Germans won't catch us on the counter.
The weight of expectation lays heavy. :(

Clever ploy by the BBC in playing down expectations a bit. ;)
Just found out the other day that my mate's wife is Kyle Lafferty's cousin. Our hero of qualifying seems to have been dumped now that things have gotten serious.

I think Wales have a real shot at this whole thing. Of course, they could go out next round, but there isn't an outstanding team at the tournament, so a well organised team or a piece of individual skill can ben enough to progress quite far. Wales have both and they're in the 'right' side of the draw.
Part of me wishes that Portugal had been England's opponents just because they'd be more likely to attack. Our finishing hasn't been anything like good enough, so a team which is happy to sit back and defend without any expectation of attacking could be more than enough to blunt us. And we've seen how that's worked out for us in two of the three games thus far.

I feel like Iceland could get a draw with England and then it will go to penalties. Iceland have been great to watch but Croatia have been my favourites so far – they seem the most aware and their reactions are so fast. I was so happy for them beating Spain, and without Modric too.

I thought about that, but I was so glad I watched the Iceland game:). That last goal was brilliant and I loved the way the players joined in with the chant from the fans. That sound they create is incredible because it's like swords banging on shields! And the national anthem goes right through me. There are parts of it that really sound ancient, like you're being taken back in time to an old cathedral.
yeah,i LOVE their chants! agreed,i think they have a great chance of atleast a draw against england, they usually dont do very well in these tournaments-i think Iceland can beat them aswell if they keep playing like this.

That Portugal vs. Hungary was just crazy... They shot 4 times, score 3 goals and hit the goalpost once, how's that for accuracy?
It's nice to see Ronaldo finally wake up, we're gonna need him against Croatia, but there are still a lot of players not playing well enough!
Somehow, the goal that Iceland scored in the last minute, sending us to the 3rd place (I still can't believe it we ranked 3rd on THAT group), helped us to avoid the shark tank but Croatia is playing so damn well... We need a great night from everone to win that!

Yah, sad for Northern Ireland, they are a good team.
Ireland vs France tomorrow can't wait. France has always been one of the bigger teams that loss against smaller teams. I don't think you can ever tell what you are going to get with them, so i think ireland has a decent shot of winning. I'm supporting Ireland here, if they go out then i'll support England and Italy.

We ran our race. We didn't concede more than a goal in a match. We're probably still gonna win the prestigious 'shortest player' trophy.
Whoever the hell Will Grigg is, he's still on fire. He's probably the coach driver or something - I stopped going to Windsor Park just before it became fun again.
We didn't have a headline grabbing match like in Spain '82 but I think this squad has surpassed Jennings, Armstrong, McIlroy, O'Neill, Big Norman etc, purely because of how few of them are playing in the top leagues.

It felt to me like they ran out of steam. Maybe beating Spain took too much out of them, and I'm not sure how different this team was to that particular line up, aside from Modric being injured. A very frustrating match to watch and I was happy that it at least didn't go to penalties. Croatia had so many chances – some terrible sitters as well – but didn't find the net, so I can't be too unhappy about it.
The bogey team strikes again though – Portugal always seemed to knock England out and it happens to other teams too.
Wales getting through was the best part of yesterday.

Not so long to go now and the nerves are starting to kick in, the fourteen cans of pre-match Bulmers have been well and truly made inroads into but may well not be enough to fully quell them before kick-off and I strongly believe I may have to sacrifice the two I was planning on using for the game itself.
It's a do or die day for the team and I really hope messrs O'Neill & Keane proved far better at calculating the requisite amount or pre-match dressing room alcohol than I did!!

Todays games seem much more exciting. Here's hoping they're better than yesterdays.
Obviously France are the favourites, but unless Didier has worked out how to get the best out of that squad (and there's been no evidence of that thus far) then Ireland have a chance. Of course, one moment of brilliance could be more than enough for France and, let's face it, they've got a few in that team which are more than capable of doing it.
Germany should walk their game, but they've not looked sparkling either yet. Maybe now it's knockout they'll turn up?
Hungry v Belgium looks very tasty. Hungry are the surprise team of the tournament, IMO, and Belgium (like France) can't seem to get their team clicking. Another dour performance and I don't see why Hungry couldn't get past them.
That Portugal vs. Hungary was just crazy... They shot 4 times, score 3 goals and hit the goalpost once, how's that for accuracy?

A lot of people are talking about the microphone scene, but they have no idea of what Ronaldo has been through because of that "news" channel! The Day before that interview, they showed an interview of Ronaldo's late father completely drunk talking about the disease that would eventually kill him. Ronaldo did what every non-idiot Portuguese wanted to do if they had money to pay the judicial process. I don't usually like him, but on that moment I just wish he would have punched the so called reporter in the face before throwing him and the camera man into the lake!
About the game last night, we played for the result, not risking too much and making the right subs in the right moments. It's not pretty but it worked with a bit of luck, that has been lacking in the last few matches!
Next game is easier in theory which concerns me a bit because that means it will be harder for us, as we usually only play decently when we're the under dogs.

The expected outcome. They came out and played much more as a team in the second half and Didier made the change from the start of the second half and it worked well. No. I don't really have one of those for football. When I was a kid, if the game was boring or I needed United to score a goal, I'd go out in the garden/street for a few minutes to kick the ball about scoring the goal for myself. My mum told me it worked once, so I carried on doing it for a few years. Frankly, I think she did it so she could turn it off while I was out the room. :D
As a kid i always thought that if i made myself think Celtic were going to lose then they'd actually win. Like i was just destined to be wrong or something haha.

Really glad Italy has won now, only caught the last 10 minutes though so not sure how well they did throughout. I'm not English so i don't really care. It's just after England being so underwhelming in every tournament i've ever watched i kind of want to see them win. Scotland and Ireland are my countries. Italy are the country i have no connection to that i usually support.
I can totally see Italy winning the Euro. Totally deserved, this victory!
Let's see what Iceland does against England. I am predicting 2-0 to England.
Oh, and congratulations Fab!!!!! :)
I'm predicting 1-0 to England. And i'm going to predict Italy will beat Belgium in the final.
i think Germany might win-eventhough i dont want them to because they play in such a boring way.
I would love iceland to go all the way-but thats unlikely. maybe 1-0 to england as camo said, but i wouldnt be surprised if it goes to penalties. But i think if its 0-0 and it goes to extras england might beat them as they`re more likely to "last" longer.

I still think France, as the home nation, have to be considered, but otherwise I think whoever wins Germany v Italy will win the tournament. Italy look the best team, but you can't discount the Germans in a tournament where there isn't a really good team.
If Italy can win this tournament, I think this will be one of my favourite seasons in recent memory. Despite United not playing well or finishing top four, their winning the FA Cup is just enough for me to consider this a decent season for us. However, the victories of teams over star players (something which some of you know annoys me quite a lot) has made me very happy this season and that's something which has continued into this tournament.

Is anyone actually surprised though? Nope. Didn't think so. Even if we go on to win. It's odd that this would be a massive upset despite not being a surprise. Those two things don't seem to go together. But if any team can make them go together, it's England.
I do find it funny that England (and England fans) have been banging on about playing beautiful passing football for so long and how that's why we don't win and we're being beaten by 80's compact long ball/set pieces. :D Somewhere Big Sam is sitting toking on a cigar with a huge smile on his face.
I feel sorry for Hodgson as there's no way they're doing what he's told them to or what they've been preparing for all week. If we play anything like as poorly as that again in the second half, we won't even score the equalised, let alone win.
Lastly, just the one hand to it this time, Joe. Something tells me Pep's flicking through the goalie brochure as we speak. ;)

Congratulations Iceland. A completely deserved victory.
As for England? Losing is one thing. Everyone loses and most lose badly at some point. But that performance was a disgrace. By the end, I was almost wishing England not to score because they just didn't deserve to go through. Nice to see Joe Hart round off a perfect tournament for himself by getting in the way of Alli at the death and ruining our last chance. OK, so nothing probably would've come of it, but he's had an absolute shocker of a tournament.
The rumours since Pep stated he was joining City have been that he's not a fan of Hart because he doesn't think he's good enough with the ball at his feet. This tournament will have done nothing to keep his place.
Rooney was terrible. Kane was terrible, but he shouldn't have been on the pitch anyway, so I can't really blame him too much. But why was he still taking set pieces? He's looked terrible on them in every game. Where was Rashford? OK, I don't think he'd save us, but we couldn't pass so we needed someone fast and direct and he's that if nothing else.
Another win the for decent team against a side of individual superstars.
It's because UEFA stopped Bobby Charlton and Winston Churchill from coming on.

That leaves an 18 year old striker taking a set piece in the final moments of a match where they were trailing by a goal.

Reminds me of Graham Taylor - Lovely man, good club coach but the England conundrum was way over his head. Unlike Taylor, however, Hodgson had a decent squad to work with.
I reckon that this crop of players need someone they can relate to, and that's not a 68 year old who's successes came outside these shores. Someone with the recent experience, the lifestyle, the trophy cabinet.

It's very difficult to say who should take over – I was amused by Harry Redknapp's comments that he had no faith in the FA choosing the right man for the job. None of the names mentioned fill me with enthusiasm. The mention of Gareth Southgate worries me too because I don't think it's ambitious enough, but I do feel like the next man should be relatively young.
I saw the criticism on both BBC and ITV, all brutal, and I'm sure rightly so. What struck me was that although Lee Dixon and Ian Wright spoke about leaders on the pitch at no time did anyone question Wayne Rooney's suitability as Captain. Hodgson and Neville in particular were lambasted but Rooney seemed to escape any specific criticism.
Tacitus
06-28-16, 12:02 PM
If Rooney does the decent thing and retires from international football now, he'll have saved the new manager a big headache. Never mind captain, that guy shouldn't even be in the team. His lack of form isn't a recent blip either.
He may only be 30 but that body has been playing top flight football solidly for almost 15 years now. The bodywork's still in decent nick (if pinky purple is your colour) but the engine's knackered.
Southgate seems like a nice guy, but he's a company man in the same way Hodgson was and I can't see him lighting any kind of fire under this set of players.
Benitez? He's better than Newcastle, surely?

I can't help but look at the changes made by Eddie Jones for the England Rugby team, with Chris Robshaw replaced as Captain but still within a successful side.
I hadn't watched a full England game in this tournament until the one with Iceland but Rooney's frustrated, gritted-teeth reactions were all too familiar from past tournaments. It's a shame but he hasn't performed in at least the last three and I can't see that changing. It was very interesting to hear the language being used today in the new press conference and elsewhere, about England's "wretched record" and being "brittle" as soon as the tournament proper is upon us.
Southgate seems like a nice guy, but he's a company man in the same way Hodgson was and I can't see him lighting any kind of fire under this set of players.
Yeah, I think that's the problem. It's like when they chose Steve McClaren.
Benitez? He's better than Newcastle, surely?
Oh definitely. I mean they were relegated but he's still the best manager they've had for a long time and it's great he's sticking with them.
Funnily enough, Ryan Giggs popped into my head but that would be a big ask and it's not his country anyway. Maybe he'll follow Chris Coleman for Wales but with the success they're having it probably wouldn't be for a while.
I think it should be an English manager. Nigel Pearson might have been good but it's unfortunate about all the things that happened towards the end of his time at Leicester.
If we can get someone like Slaven Bilic, that would do me:). I always liked him when he managed Croatia and his detailed, funny contribution to ITV's coverage really has made it the best this time round. I was sorry he departed after the group stage.

I think Bilic would be great but suspect he's got unfinished business at West Ham so don't see him leaving.
The new manager needs to appeal to the modern England international - Owning a pair of headphones which cost more than it took to double glaze my house is a start, a watch the size of a small child is another.
I was only half joking when I said Rio Ferdinand. Gary Neville's surely too tainted by his association with Hodgson and failure in Spain but he's one of the few elite level players of the recent England past to have tried coaching, so why not give it to a complete noob, with an experienced backroom staff. It worked for Klinsmann and Germany.
Just keep yet mitts off Michael O'Neill! :D
Actually, I'd be surprised if O'Neill starts next season as NI manager. There aren't many Prem clubs who would be interested in him but he's ready made for a Championship or Scots Prem club. The NI job doesn't pay particularly well - Don't have any recent info but remember Lawrie McMenemy saying he earned about 60k a year with NI which, in professional football terms, is buttons.

It was a shame Northern Ireland didn't do better, and Scotland also should have been in this tournament they'd been playing so well. I dunno how attractive the job would be to him at this stage in his career. I've heard rumours today that the FA want to give it to Southgate on an interim basis then approach Wenger when his Arsenal contract expires next summer - Wenger has famously never broken a contract.
Don't know how interested Arsene would even be but he's of an age where any failure in the position wouldn't taint him too much and the decreased workload might be beneficial to a guy in his mid 60s.

I'd love that. I'd also love to be the nutjob who put money on that at the start of the tournament if that happened haha.
haha so true!
But seriously i think it would have been amazing. imagine the crazy fan support from the stands.
The most interesting national team is probably Wales. The most boring one is Portugal. The game will be an interesting one (or not!) :p
This tournament along with Leicester winning the league has made this one of my favourite football years in quite a while. Basically since i started watching there's always been these set teams who can win or do well in tournaments. The only change was with Man City, Chelsea, etc, getting big bucks to compete. So it is great seeing Leicester without the money and these countries which money can't play a part in obviously doing so well.
