Sorry Cosmic, I didn't really like Wings of Desire. I think it was too artsy for simple me. But still a good nom and I believe it's on some of the MoFo list, so I got to cross that one off as watched.:p
It was my #11
Miss Vicky
08-11-17, 05:35 PM
One thing that really surprised me was how many people didn't place their own nomination at #1. I think that affected the outcome quite a bit.
I'm honestly surprised that Wings of Desire did better (if only slightly haha) than The Marriage of Maria Braun. On my final ballot my nomination ended up at 5, but when I was still settling on an order, it was more in the 8-11 zone. The middle of my list switched around a lot. I ended up ranking it higher because the cinematography really was beautiful, and I am just a sucker for pretty images haha.
Your review of Wings of Desire was my favourite in this HOF. Oddly i've never got the impression that you really love your nominations including Wings of Desire but i always like your reasons why you think something is a great film.

That sounded not like i meant it to haha. I constantly use 'really' as a descriptor for very or alot or whatever, that makes it sound like i'm saying i don't think you like your own nom and that's not what i meant. I meant that i didn't think that you loved it from it, like one of your very favourite films.

I didn't love Nightmare Alley, but it was pretty solid. I had it at 8.
Nightmare Alley was my #4 and was #1 out of films i hadn't seen before this Hall of Fame. It's still my favourite Citizen nomination!

I nominated Nightmare Alley as I wanted a lesser known 1940s film. I didn't expect it to do all that well.
I voted it at #6...Still as long as some members got something out of it, then I'm happy with the choice.

I really love certain elements of the films I've nominated, but they're not favourites, no. I think I tend to be more critical of my own nominations, and I try to rank them fairly (as if someone else had nominated it).
I'm glad you liked my write-up for Wings of Desire. I really enjoyed writing it, and I like writing that way about films in general. I just don't always have the motivation to do so haha.

Dead Poet's was 12/14 for me. It's fine but i think it would have meant alot more to me when i was 14.

I didn't like Dead Poets Society, I didn't connect with the films message as many people do and that's the main reason why it didn't work for me..that and I don't like Robin Williams as an actor.
I just realized that all the #positions on my voting list that I was posting, was from my old list when there was 16 movies.
Dead Poets Society was #14 on my old list but on the revised list, it was #12

I had Buffalo '66 at #6, which is probably more a reflection of my opinion of the films below it than of the film itself. It was okay, but definitely not a favorite from this HOF.
Though Cricket's review of it was my favorite post in this thread.
Thought it would have fell alot more than that. As you know i said constantly i get that some will hate it, so glad that Citizen really liked it as much as he did

I actually mentioned Buffalo '66 to someone last weekend. At a family BBQ, where a lot of people I normally don't see showed up, I discovered that my cousin has been in a long term (20+ years) relationship with the co-creator and writer for this Canadian horror comedy tv series I'd heard a lot about. He happened to be at the BBQ as well, and we talked for awhile about filmmaking and cinematography. I specifically mentioned the editing of that scene where everyone is having a conversation around the dinning room table.
So while this film was really low on my list at 13, it's something that's definitely stuck with me. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

The Great Dictator...might not be the funnest film I've watched but I think it was one of the most important films that I've ever seen...and that meant a lot to me. I'm so glad it was nominated as I have never seen it.
The end speech by Chaplin was such a heartfelt plead for sanity, and at a time when the world was poised on self destruction, his speech gave me a window back in time.

I half expected to dislike Broken Circle Breakdown, based solely on the images I'd seen from other reviews and that the style of music played a huge part of the film. But surprisingly I really enjoyed it, and I was emotionally invested from start to finish. There may have been a few tears. (There definitely was.) It was #4 on my list. When I first took over as host, I was adding the ballots to the spreadsheet as they came in. However as it became clear that The Hunt and Flesh + Blood were going to be eliminated, I stopped updating it. I was really shocked that Dances ultimately won, especially by only one point.

Manchester by the Sea was #7 on my list. It was a very solid film, but there was just too much competition for my affection this HoF. Both my room mate and I thought it was pretty funny, and nowhere near as depressing as we had been lead to believe.
I remember commenting to my room mate that the location was like a much fancier, less terrible* version of here. The part where Lee mentions not wanting to go to his hometown because people still talk about his tragedy really resonated with our hometowns as well. We both found the similarities incredibly amusing for some reason.

Joel, have you seen any of the other movies in this Hof? If so how would you rank them compared to The Quiet Earth?
There's another post apocalyptic film with a last man on Earth, and a woman, and eventually another man: The World, The Flesh and The Devil (1959) have you seen that one? I thought it was well done...and it's very similar to The Quiet Earth, except for the multi reality thing.

Yes, I have seen some these films. I don't wanna hog up tons of real estate with my thoughts since I'm not part of this tournament but when I'm not mobile I wouldn't mind dropping a couple lines on a few. Count me in for HOF 14. Thoroughly enjoyed peeking behind the curtain and seeing how things changed as the votes came in.
REALLY enjoyed that.
My List:
01. The Broken Circle Breakdown (14) As emotional as this was, I thoroughly enjoyed this the most. And that says A LOT since I'm at time in my life where I truly dislike sad endings.
02. The Great Dictator (13) It's Chaplin, I'm gonna rate it high :)
03. The Three Musketeers (12) purely self interest :D
04. Dances With Wolves (11)
05. Dead Poets Society (10)
06. Forbidden Games (9)
07. Nightmare Alley (8)
08. Manchester By the Sea (7)
09. Captain Fantastic (6) #4 through #9 were basically equal in enjoyment, really and no matter how I stacked him, no way in hell I'd be happy with the outcome
10. Wings of Desire (5)
11. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring (4)
12. The Marriage of Maria Braun (3)
13. The Quiet Earth (2) same with this group. But they didn't hold my enjoyment throughout as the group above them for what ever minor reason.
14. Buffalo ’66 (1) Like so many others, one of my favorite reviews (for this --rant) was cricket's eloquent hatred of Gallo. VERY funny.
And it would be easy to join in and say this was why for me. But I can't.
It was the character its self. And quite honestly, I don't think anyone else could have brought out THE reaction, (I am assuming from what little I knew, back then, about Gallo) that he was aiming for. So, like I said, can't put in on the actor. He did EXACTLY what he was looking to do, in spades.
The character was some thing I grew to despise as the movie proceeded. Exacerbated each time he had a sobbing breakdown. And since he was, pretty much, in every single scene. . .
Also. The reason for stating this, besides not going into it when I reviewed it and answering any question before its asked about its placement, is this:
There are quite a number of folks here I love and respect. One of that number, is Camo.
And speaking honestly and not bullsh!tting or blowing smoke is how I express that respect. And, hopefully, he understands that for what it is, and even more so, it is how he would wish it.
...Count me in for HOF 14. This looks like just the arena for me to get closer to some of the forum and have real discussions. Thanks!
Very cool that you can join:up:...I'm glad I asked you. It should be fun too!
I think I have my nom picked out, unless I change me mind before the Hof starts:p
Yes sir, I appreciate the invite! I thought of my nom, too. But still some time to reconsider.

WELCOME to the HoFs, Joel!!
It IS an excellent spot to get know others and get into discussions about the movies in them. I hope you enjoy yourself!
Thanks, man! Looking forward to talking some shop...
Yeah, doubt i'm joining the next one but glad you are getting involved Joel.

Of course. And usually i'd be debating your problems but i said as much constantly and i agree with Cricket about Gallo, i expected to despise the film because i really hate Gallo; just so happens that i think he at least had a hand in creating something pretty great with Buffalo '66. His character is completely detestable which is why it works for me as i disliked Gallo before i saw a second of his performance, liking a character doesn't really matter to me as long as i get some sort of reaction to them and i did think i could empathize with his character in the end. The film was surreal so i never felt anything he did was actually real even though it was supposed to be, his dream-death scene felt no different from the rest of the film; i could easily accept a story of Ricci stabbing him dead at the start and the rest of the film being a last second fever dream of an imagined adventure with Ricci.
Completely understand that you and a few others didn't feel this way about the film and there's no need to feel sorry about it, some you're going to like, some you aren't; just glad you gave it a shot.

congrats to vicky for the first place and raul for the second. Quite surprising anyways
Great effort guys. Really enjoyed that and it helped me to watch some good films that I wouldn't have otherwise watched. Loved hearing your thoughts on each film (even if I didn't agree). I don't take my nomination position personally. Film is subjective and where it finishes in a HoF doesn't change my appreciation of it.
Watching 'Dances' as and adult was superb. A really excellent film and deserved winner, but I could have made a case for 5 or 6 to win.
Camo and Miss Vicky - Thanks for all of your effort. Massive. 👍
Well done everyone, I already have my choice for the next one :D

much appreciated and I do remember seeing an interview with Gallo back in the day and how he preferred if someone reacted strongly against the character otherwise he didn't do what he set out to do with the character. So I completely agree with that.
And normally, like you, it isn't important on how I feel about the leading character on whether I enjoy a movie or not. Which is a shame in this case, because it caused me me miss out on a lot things I know for a fact I would have enjoyed: The layers of each meeting, especially the parents and dinner, the bowling alley, many of the conversations on the phone with his buddy, and so on.
So that's on me. And yes, I AM glad I had the opportunity to rewatch it all these years later. I had been VERY curious to see how I would feel about it since first seeing it when it first came out in the theaters. So, thank you for that.
And yeah, that's part of the excitement of these HoFs. Trying what you normally wouldn't. Some ya like, some ya don't. Which is why I don't mind my nom being at the bottom of the pile. It's all good.

You know I expected to hate Buffalo 66, after I read the mini synopsis on IMDB:
After being released from prison, Billy is set to visit his parents with his wife, whom he does not actually have. This provokes Billy to act out, as he kidnaps a girl and forces her to act as his wife for the visit. As soon as I realized it was a dark comedy, then the personality of what would have been a creepy ex con kidnapping a girl...became enjoyable for me, as I didn't take what I was seeing seriously.
I did feel bad for the kidnapped girl, but only for a few minutes. Then her nonchalant reaction to Galo made it seem OK to me that she was kidnapped, she didn't seem to care either so I didn't respond like it was a real kidnapping.
If she had played the role as a traumatized victim, then I might have felt differently about the movie. But she actually liked Galo, and in the end she was just as messed up as he was. So my positive response to Galo's character was in part do to Christina Ricci reacting positively towards Galo.
Anyway that's the only explanation I have for really liking this film, which I had expected not to like.
I thought it was a fresh & unique indie film, with an unlikable (but very human) protagonist. Come to think of it, it was Galo's very realistic qualities that I liked the most.

I enjoyed Ricci's acting the first time and this time. She was an excellent counter-balance to Gallo.

Neat HoF indeed ! It was a bit dissapointing to see the film I placed at #1 ranked so poorly in the overall standings. But hey, this was a collective film watching after all and it was to be expected that the opinions on nominations would be quite diverse. Either way I got a chance to see a couple of films that I wouldn't normally give a chance to and meanwhile I discovered a few favourites. That's pretty much what I hoped this tournament would achieve for me.

The Three Musketeers. You're in good company MarkF is fond of that movie.
The way I like to look at the Hofs is like a beauty contest. No matter how beautiful a girl is in a beauty contest, they all can't win! and somebody has to score lowest. :)

I like that - very lovely thought
and THANK YOU Jeff for putting Three Musketeers at #1. No matter where I place, even at the bottom or d@mn near if someone enjoys it, that will do just fine ;)
This was me
01. Dances with Wolves (14)
02. Dead Poets Society (13)

I know I am coming in late with this (I am a little slow with catching up with everything at the moment), but this was my list:
1. Dead Poets Society
2. The Great Dictator
3. Dances With Wolves
4. Buffalo '66
5. Manchester By the Sea
6. The Hunt
7. Captain Fantastic
8. The Marriage of Maria Braun
9. The Broken Circle Breakdown
10. The Three Musketeers
11. Wings of Desire
12. Nightmare Alley
13. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
14. Forbidden Games
15. The Quiet Earth
16. Flesh and Blood
It is a shame that The Hunt was disqualified because I really liked that one. And I couldn't care less that Flesh and Blood was, but it cost me money to watch it. So that is what upsets me the most about having wasted the time watching it.

SWEET
I had one nom originally, and now I'm on the fence about it. But I WILL have one
Cool
I'm thinking of joining one of these and I already have a nomination in mind
So, just writing this to say i'm sorry to everyone involved in this, especially Miss Vicky who finished this. I should hv said smthing when I disappeared and I didn't.
I read that Camo went away, I'm sorry about that, he was a great poster.
Don't worry, I won't join a HoF soon, till I'm not 100% sure I can do it...
And congrats to Dances with Wolves and Miss Vicky, great movie! :)
