The "Getting To Know You" Song Tournament


DO NOT POST YOUR NOMINATIONS IN THIS THREAD YET! If most people agree, it might be fun to keep the nominations private, and we could try to guess who nominated what songs, but we'll discuss this idea in this thread and see what everyone thinks about this idea.

Due to the nature of this tournament, it will probably take longer than normal to decide on your nominations, so this thread is being opened early, but the actual tournament won't start for probably about a week from today. (If someone can contact Swan and let him know about it, I think he was interested, and I'd like him to have a chance to join it if he wants to.)

We will probably need at least eight (8) nominations from everyone, but we won't know the exact number until we see how many people join, so have some extra nominations ready just in case we need them.

As I posted in the previous thread (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1400148#post1400148), the idea behind this "Getting To Know You" Song Tournament is that each of the nominated songs has to somehow be about the person who nominated it.

For example, if you're a girl with brown eyes, you could nominate the song "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. Or if you're basically a happy person, you could nominate something like "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. Maybe you have a special song that was played at your wedding or other special occasion. If you've gone through a breakup, you could nominate a breakup song that expresses how you felt. Or you could nominate the theme song to your favorite TV show or movie. Maybe there's even a song about someone with your name. Anything that somehow relates to the person who nominated it.

The rules will be very lenient for nominations to allow for people to express themselves. I'm not going to decide what nominations will be eligible. It will all be up to you, as the person who nominates the songs. There won't be any specific "rules" about your nominations, except that you have to think that they somehow relate to you. Just decide for yourself how it relates to you, but if someone asks you about it later, it would probably be helpful if you could tell them why or how it relates to you. The idea is to generate discussion, and hopefully we'll learn more about each other than we probably wanted to know. :lol:

It could be something personal that sounds like it could have been written about you, or something as simple as the theme song to the first movie you ever saw, or a line in the song sounds like it describes you. It's all about you, so it's all up to you. You know yourselves better than anyone. Think about yourself. Not just what you look like, but also personality traits, hobbies, favorite movies, TV shows, sports, colors, cars, pets, etc., anything you can think of. You're only limited by whatever you can think of that relates to you.

It doesn't even have to be about now. It could be about something in your past. A lost love, a broken heart, your best day, your worst experience, etc. Anything is eligible as long as it somehow relates to you.


Rules:
All genres are eligible, with no limitations on genre, themes, etc. For this tournament, we'll even allow previous tournament winners and songs that are over 10 minutes long.

Any song is allowed as long as you can provide a link to it. Everyone uses YouTube, but you can also link from DailyMotion and other sites if you prefer, as long as they don't require anyone to sign up for the site to listen to the song.

To be fair to everyone, you must listen to both songs to vote. You must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting throughout the tournament. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.

In reference to the private noms, the idea isn't to keep them secret throughout the tournament. The idea is to discuss them as soon as the songs are posted, and guess who nominated them. Once someone recognizes one of your noms, or if enough people get it wrong, (whenever you feel it's the right time), you're free to tell everyone it's your nom.

The idea of the private noms is to generate discussion, see how well we really know each other, and maybe find out some stuff that we don't know about each other.

I just thought it would be fun to keep the noms private, but if you guys want them public, that's okay too.

We all need time to come up with our noms anyway, so take a few days to discuss it in here, and see how everyone feels about it, and then we'll decide how most people want it. This is a democracy, so we can even take a vote after we discuss it. :)

That sounds like a very good idea. It would leave some suspense for the later rounds.


But the bottom line is this. I'm going to leave it up to each of you to decide when to tell everyone if they guessed right or not. Obviously I would be the only one with the full list, so I'm not going to guess, give hints, or tell anyone whether they're right or wrong. This tournament is all about YOU, so it will be your decision when to "out" your nominations. :)

Why not have someone completely unaffiliated with the tournament take the nominations in from people (assuming someone would be kind enough to do so) and then just pass on a full list of songs to you Gbg without saying who nominated each one?

That way you wouldn't know who had nominated what either which would mean:
(a) you could have the same fun as every other participant in guessing who nominated any particular song
(b) nobody can add two and two to make eight and accuse you of any possible bias as to pitting particular players against each other

The only potential downside I can see is that matches in round 1 could feasibly contain two songs from the same person but personally that wouldn't bother me as I adopt a 'half-full' outlook in that one is guaranteed to go through.

Just a thought.


That would be great if you can find someone who wants to take the nominations and pass them along. If that person keeps them separate, (without naming names), I can still number them the way I did in the last song tournament I ran to try to avoid people's songs going up against each other.

The nominations could even be posted in a thread (again without naming names), so that everyone could see what songs were nominated, and I could just get them from the thread.

Not saying you would - but if someone involved in the tournament is also the one that collected nominations it may give another participant cause to start acting up should something happen to upset them with the way songs are drawn against each other. If it's someone neither running nor taking part in the tournament it's one less potential 'stick' to be thrown.

Did you read the first post of this thread? I tried to give ideas of what to think about to come up with your nominations.

I don't think there's any rush to find someone. Most people don't even know their nominations yet.

I have to leave in a few minutes, but when I get back, I'll post something in the Chill Club thread to see if we can find a volunteer. (If someone wants to post in there while I'm gone, that would be okay too.)

I don't really see the point of the notes. I don't think anyone is thinking that every part of every song will apply, do they? One of my songs relates to a specific moment in my life. That's it. Although it does kind of fit with the moment, it wouldn't otherwise mean anything to me other than being a great song.

I think that would be interesting to see if it did happen -- to see two or maybe even more people share a personal song in common. They could all be credited for it if it wins.

Plus, someone might nominate something really meaningful to them... only to have to give it up.

So I think that in this case, duplicate nominations should be allowed and accepted, if it happens. What's it gonna hurt? Doubles the chances of it winning. So what? This is a different kind of tournament.

I'm still catching up on this thread, but I wanted to let everyone know that due to the nature of the songs being more personal, this is a unique type of tournament that probably won't be done again for a while, so we'll find a way to make sure that everyone who wants to join will be able to.

If we end up with too many people joining, I'll find a way to make it work by changing the matches around if necessary. (Maybe a few more sets if necessary, or changing the number of matches per set, etc.) Nobody has to drop out to allow others to join. We'll make it work somehow.

Who knows, maybe we'll even get enough people to make it a mega-tournament?


Also, I sent Christine a PM about this tournament, so hopefully she'll join after her son's wedding, and Funny Face also said she was interested, so hopefully her internet issues will be fixed soon too, and she might be able to join.

The idea is to make a game out of it where people can guess who nominated the songs. It's only a secret until people start guessing. Then after people start guessing, when you feel it's the right time, you can decide when to tell people if they got your nominations right.

It's just a fun way to find out how much we know about each other, and maybe even learn a little more about each other as we go along.

Can I make a suggestion?

Since there's gonna be secretive nominating... if anybody nominates something already nominated... don't make them change a song. Keep them both in, even if they're the same song.

I think that would be interesting to see if it did happen -- to see two or maybe even more people share a personal song in common. They could all be credited for it if it wins.

Plus, someone might nominate something really meaningful to them... only to have to give it up.

So I think that in this case, duplicate nominations should be allowed and accepted, if it happens. What's it gonna hurt? Doubles the chances of it winning. So what? This is a different kind of tournament.

You have to nominate songs that express who you are or songs that describe yourself.

It's like a biographical song tournament. A personal one. It could include your favorite song, a song that really means something to you, etc. etc.


The songs can be personal to you in any way that you can imagine. For example, one of my songs is a song that my father used to sing karaoke style with me when I was a kid, so it always makes me think of him when I hear it,

The idea of having the nominations private is so that we can all guess at who nominated what songs, so Chypmunk suggested that someone who's not playing collect the nominations and pass them along to me, without the names of who nominated what songs, so that I can play along too.

I was going to wait until about Wednesday or Thursday, and then post here asking how people were doing with their nominations, but I don't expect the tournament to start before Friday, or maybe even as late as Monday depending on how quickly people can decide on their nominations. I know that some people are already done, but some people may need some extra time for their nominations, so I want to be able to give them enough time to decide on songs that they're happy nominating. But if everyone is ready earlier, then we might be able to start earlier.

Thank you for helping us out. Basically we just need someone to accept the nominations by private messages, and forward the complete list to me without the names of who nominated what songs. If you know how to use a randomizer, (such as random.org), it would help if you could randomize them before you send me the whole list, but if not, that's okay too. Just make sure that there are no usernames with the songs. I can randomize them when I get the list if necessary.

Also, please do not tell ANYONE who nominated what songs, including anyone who is not in the tournament. The idea is that nobody knows who nominated what songs so we can all guess, and it would spoil the surprise if it got out.

I don't think most people are done with their nominations yet, so it may take a few days for everyone's nominations to come in, but the list of participants is in the first post of this thread, and there should be eight (8) nominated songs per person.

This is kind of a unique tournament because of the songs being personal, so I'd rather not turn anyone away who wants to play, and I also don't really want to ask anyone to drop any of their songs, so unless there are objections, The Sci-Fi Slob can join, but we'll have to have one extra match in a few sets, (or I can do one extra set with less matches), and we'll probably have one match in one of the later rounds that has three songs.

When the nominations are revealed isn't really up to me. I don't have the list of who nominated what, so I can't reveal anything even if I want to.

I would prefer that people wait until their song is out before they reveal that it's theirs, but it's up to you guys when you think it's the right time to reveal your songs.

I was just thinking about everyone admitting which were theirs. It was based on something else that was said. I didn't know if people were expected to reveal what song was theirs (after it was kicked out) or if the guessing game would go a little while beyond the end of a set (or round).

As a quick side note, I know tomorrow (and ONLY tomorrow) I may not be online at all. I knew this when this was first starting up (I was secretly hoping it wouldn't start until Saturday :)). I am going to assume that the second set won't be closed by tomorrow night, but if it is (basically if everyone's votes are in but mine), that is OK. I will, for sure, be here Saturday, though. Just letting that be known. :)

I think some people said that they wanted people to wait until the songs were eliminated before they admitted it was their song so people could keep guessing throughout the tournament.
