Also, I seriously wanted to nominate this song (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OAqDG9IwGIo) (just because I love it so much :)) or this song (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=crpeZElm178) (the man's voice drives me insane with this one). I have a little bit of an obsession with him. I won't deny it. I love his voice. And after years of my mother saying to me "You'd better write to him", my reply of "Why? Because he's 81?" (and then keep changing the one to a higher number because this went on for years), and then she'd answer with "Yes", I finally "stalked" the man and got his autograph. Got it last year. :yup:
I love Vic Damone's voice too, (but I'm not obsessed with him). :)

Oh, it wouldn't have been that bad. :) But saying things like that just makes me even more tempted to throw one or two of their songs into one of these tournaments just to make you suffer. :D

ROUND 2 - DAY 2: - LOSERS :(
Mark Wills - Nineteen Something (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sm--KJk-kgw)
The Mark Wills song was my nomination. The song is all about everything that I grew up with, so it's like walking through a tour of my memories.
I can't count how many times I saw Star Wars in the theater.
Pac-Man was one of the few video games that I was addicted to in my youth.
I collected baseball cards, and spent hours sorting them.
I was only about 10 years old when Elvis died, so I didn't understand why it was such a big deal, but I knew how upset my Mom was about it.
I still have some of my 8-track tapes, and even an 8-track recorder that still works.
My family was the first on the block to get a microwave. (It was called a "radar range" back then.)
Didn't everyone pull the stickers off their Rubik's Cube?
I remember the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy like it was yesterday. I was watching it live when it happened. :bawling:
A lot of my friends had parties at roller skating rinks, but I never learned how to even stand on roller skates, so it was just a fun place to hang out with my friends.
I had a Matchbox-size black Trans-Am because it was such a cool-looking car. (I probably still have it somewhere.)
That song just brings back so many memories of my younger days. :)

ROUND 2 - DAY 4: - LOSERS :(
Terry Cashman - Talkin' Baseball and the Mets (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iVcRu77kKKM)
As most of you guessed, the NY Mets song was my nomination. (Probably the easiest guess in the whole tournament. :) )
I've been a New York Mets fan since I was about 3 years old, and I've stayed true to them through all the ups and downs. (Sadly, there were a lot more downs than ups over the years. :( ) Unfortunately they didn't win the World Series this year, but I'm proud of how far they did go.
I actually wanted to use the 2008 version of that song (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr4RABQfGMk), but I liked the video for the older version better, and I just assumed that I was the only one who would notice the difference in the songs anyway.
Angel's Son was mine. I just wrote a long post and sat here re-reading it for 10 minutes but then decided to delete it. It was too personal and probably too sad for others to read. Anyway, the title of the song doesn't relate to me but the feelings and the lyrics do. My mother passed away earlier this year after a seven year battle with cancer:
You were fighting everyday
So hard to hide the pain
I know you never said goodbye
I had so much left to say

K-K-K-Katy by Billy Murray
I have to tell you guys that I very much enjoyed seeing this song make it to the second round. I didn't think it would make it past the first (I knew that it definitely wouldn't make it into the third). So this was a nice little surprise for me. :)
Why did I choose it? I am a woman., and the song title is a woman's name. So, if you can't put the two together as to why it was chosen, well, that is not my probem. :nope: :D

I love Vic Damone's voice too, (but I'm not obsessed with him). :)
I kind of think that I am the only one in the world who is. :D I just seen Vic Damone last night in the musical Kismit (1955) he sang 'Stranger In Paradise' with Ann Bltyh, have you seen that film?

Were you thinking that it should just be songs from movie musicals? Honestly, I have a list of 16 songs already just in case this should ever happen (actually, my list is a tiny bit longer than 16 :)). But I only considered 4 that were from movies. All the rest were originally on Broadway. And a decent amount weren't from older musicals. I still think they would be nice songs to nominate, though.

I'm not sure how to set the rules for it, but I would love to have a tournament that's basically songs from classic musicals. Broadway musicals would be okay too. The problem is figuring out a way to avoid the more modern and offbeat stuff. (I don't really mind modern musicals, but there's a style and sound to the classic stuff that's just different from the more modern stuff.)
I don't know if it's even possible to have something like that. It's like trying to have a science fiction HoF, but saying that horror movies aren't eligible. It just doesn't work. :(
If you, (or anyone else), have any ideas, I'm open to suggestions.

That's very sad Sane. My mum passed away nearly 20 years ago now and there isn't a day goes by I don't think of things I'd love to say to her.

great memories GBG. Sounds like an idyllic childhood :)
Well, when I was getting a little desperate for song choices, I actually started to consider songs that represented people in my life. Songs/singers that always make me think of them when I hear them. For example:
My mother (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FXsF9zrtDS4)
Brother #1 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mIqBF3MF3Bs)
Brother #2 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0HMAVU1k7kg)

Brother #4 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F_o-adbq9h0)
Brother #5 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pW_vpwbERBo)
And my father? Well, anything from Barbra Streisand's Broadway Album. :p
wow five brothers! That's a girl's protection team! I like brother 3 and his funk!

Just as well my wife isn't on these boards as she'd box all of your ears (well, those that voted against this one (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9OPc7MRm4Y8) at least anyway).
Yep, this was mine and for a very simple reason. I mentioned previously how I was indoctrinated into betting on the horses at a very young age - well a natural extension of that was a desire to go to Las Vegas at some point in my life. It just never seemed a great place to visit on my own, my mates always baulked at the expense and none of my previous partners had shown the slightest interest so I had to wait until I met my wife to be to make the trip I had yearned for so long. She'd never shown even the slightest inclination to gamble before but it turned out she simply adored Vegas and would sit quite happily for hours on end on the slot machines. It became a favourite holiday vacation for us and we've been back numerous times and with neither of us enjoying being the centre of attention it seemed the obvious venue to choose in which to commit the dirty deed of giving up any last vestige of freedom.
So why the tune? Quite simply it is my wife's favourite of those that play over the Bellagio fountains and whenever we hear it the first thing that comes to mind is Vegas!
I'm not much of a gambler, but the slot machines are the only games I play when we go to Atlantic City. I start with $10 in quarters, and I play until I lose it. Sometimes I win $10, and I put it in my pocket, and keep playing until I lose the winnings. If they have a slot machine that gives out souvenir coins, that's usually the machine that I play. I never cash in those coins, so I have several of those souvenir coins in my collection. After I lose my initial $10, Hubby and I walk the boardwalk.

Chyp - that's a funny story about your great grandma :D
My nan didn't have an indoor bathroom, the toilet was at the bottom of the yard. Used to scare me walking down there in the dark, and she had that Bronco toilet paper - dunno if you are old enough to remember that. Let's say it was slippy rather than absorbant!!
Sounds like you two have a great time in Vegas, but the one I'd love to go to is GBG's favourite Atlantic City. I think I have this very romantic version of these places, mostly from Springsteen songs, The Sopranos and films. When we went to New York, I insisted we went to Coney Island on a freezing cold day just cos I wanted to see where The Warriors were.

ok so I've had 2 songs go out in the last couple of days.
Liverpool Lou, just feels like a younger me when I was always doing different things to everyone else. No one in my family for generations had left Liverpool, so I did, straight after I left school just cos I wanted to see the wide world. Back then in the mid 70s it wasn't hard to find a job, and jobs were being lined up for me which I didn't want. I left just for headstrong reasons. Now I look back and think I must've worried my mum a lot, but to their credit they never tried to stop me or even said anything critical. I love Liverpool and always will. No matter where I've lived, Liverpool has always been the place I call home.
Oh, Liverpool Lou, lovely Liverpool Lou,
Why don't you behave just like other girls do ?
Why must my poor heart keep following you ?
Stay home and love me, my Liverpool Lou
and the other song Gimme a Pigfoot and A Bottle of Beer, I fell in love with when I first heard it about 20 years ago. Bessie's having a great time, she just don't care about anything at that point in time and sometimes that's just the way you have to be. Kick your cares away, get a bottle of beer and a pigfoot...... or a packet of pork scratchings will do, and just do yourself a favour, forget everyone else, you just relax! :)

And another one gone, another one gone, another one bites the dust. Yep, I've seen three go in the last 24 hours.
As a few of you guessed, All The Young Dudes was mine. It's tied to a very specific memory and feeling, both of which I'm reminded of each and every time I hear it.
This was the song which started to play on the radio as I approached the counter with my first black leather jacket in hand. I was 18 and I'd wanted this jacket for a while, but I always blew through my money on a weekend, so I made the decision to do nothing for a couple of weeks so I could get one. Like in a movie or something the chorus kicked in just as I walked out of the shop with that jacket on. Through a beaded curtain and out from a fairly dark shop to a very bright, late spring afternoon. I turn left and into a slight cool breeze which catches my hair as I start to walk down the street with the faint strains of the chorus now in the background. 18. Feeling ten feet tall and ready to take on the world.
Big John was the second to go. There's a few reasons why I picked this song, though none are really linked to memories. I've usually been the tallest in my class/year. If not, then one of them. This continues and I'm usually the biggest in the room/office/whatever. Not that I'm particularly gigantic or anything, but those measurements in the first verse aren't too far out and I'm just, well, big. Friends used to say I should rent my back out as billboard space. Growing up, this is the first song I could remember which was about someone who stood out because they were big.
Secondly, I'm the kind of person who would do what they could to save everyone else in a disaster..... And it'd be just my luck that, after doing it, the bloody thing would fall in on me. :D
Thirdly, there's a political programme over here called This Week and whenever the Speaker of the House (John Bercow) has been acting out or he or his wife have done something stupid, they play the clip of him walking to parliament in his robes of State. He's a very small man and it makes me laugh every time. Sadly this is the best one I could find. It starts about 1.08
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-XAOCHPXgs
The last of the three, which I was slightly surprised by as I thought it was in the lead, was Somebody To Love. I can't remember if anyone thought this'd be me or not. Anyway this is something which only became more personal about seven or eight years ago when, after some illnesses, births and deaths, I came to realise that despite what I'd planned I actually cared about another couple of people enough to live for them. With the chances of all these people dying before me pretty slim, I decided that if I was going to have to stick around, I might as well add another person to that list and have someone for myself.
When the truth is found to be lies
and all the joy in you dies
Don't you want somebody to love?
Don't you need somebody to love?
Wouldn't you love somebody to love?
You'd better find somebody to love.
Dammit, I just noticed I lost another one. That's four!
SC knew that Leonard Cohen's Everybody Knows was me straight away. Not for the reason, though. Whist I love Pump Up The Volume and that was where I first heard this, that's not why picked it. Actually, I didn't pick any song based on a film or tv programme I liked. As some of you might've noticed over the years, I'm a little bit cynical. Y'know, in the same way that Jack The Ripper was a little bit stabby. This being the case this was one of the first songs to come to mind when picking for this tournament. That's pretty much it other than to say that I noticed Captain saying that Something In The Way could be me because it's the most depressing song. In a way, he was right, just with the wrong song. How is this song not the most depressing? Everybody knows but we all lie to ourselves and pretend it's different because that's the only way to survive. Now that's depressing. :(

I'm more concerned that people have stopped admitting which songs are their nominations after they're out. Some are probably not paying as close as attention towards the end of the tournament, I think I had a song get knocked out but didn't realize it so never commented on it. Funny thing is I don't remember even seeing it, but I must have.
BTW is it a requirement that we reveal our songs at some point?

No, it's not a requirement, but I think most people are curious about everyone else's nominations. The idea of this tournament was to get to know each other, and it's hard to do that if we don't know who nominated what songs.

While we're waiting for the last few votes to come in, I'll reveal another song that I considered nominating, but didn't.
This is a song that I thought about a lot, and I couldn't decide whether or not to nominate it for a few reasons. The first reason was the obvious one, that everyone would immediately know that it was my nomination. The second reason was that there was a very good chance that nobody but me would vote for it. But the main reason that I didn't nominate it was that it's from a very emotional time in my life, and I didn't know if other people were going to open up the way they did. But since some of you have opened yourself up, it's only fair that I do the same.
This is a song from a few years after I graduated from college. I had been in a relationship with a guy, and after 5+ years, we had a huge fight and broke up. I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with this guy, so it was one of the most painful times in my life. I spent many, many hours after the breakup just lying in bed listening to this song, most of it with the song playing on continuous repeat, and just thinking about what might have been.

About ten years after we broke up, I saw him again, very briefly. Just by coincidence, were both on the same flight from New York to Florida. I found out that he moved to Florida and got married. (His wife wasn't with him, so I didn't meet her.)
I haven't seen him since then, and I've never looked him up on Facebook, Twitter, or anything like that, so that's all I know about him now.

As as few of you guessed, Dirty White Boy was my nomination. Although I don't listen to Foreigner as much as I did in my teens, they're still a band that I love. It was the final song I decided upon for this tournament; it doesn't make me feel something like my other nominations, but I do identify with the lyrics-
Hey baby, if you're feeling down, I know what's good for you all day
Are you worried what your friends see
And will it ruin your reputation loving me?
've been in trouble since I don't know when
I'm in trouble now and I know somehow I'll find trouble again
I'm a loner but I'm never alone
Every night I get one step closer to the danger zone
Cause I'm a dirty white boy, yeah a dirty white boy, a dirty white boy

I've just noticed I've lost my last nomination. Again SC saw that Nobody Does It Better was mine, as did a couple of others, I think. I've had this dedicated to me on two occasions and, while it's egotistical, it also feels pretty damn good.
Of course, this is also my favourite Bond movie and Barbara Bach was, I think, my first movie crush, so this song has always meant something to me.

I started out on eBay as a buyer over 15 years ago, and I've been selling on eBay for almost that long too. I can't look around the room without seeing stuff that I've bought on eBay. Well two more of my songs got eliminated. Then again I am shocked as hell Lone Justice made it past the first round so I am happy there.
The other one was Aerosmith's The Other Side. It is my favorite Aerosmith song, and is the song that I most connect with my college years. Especially my very early college years. Like my first summer semester. Used to play it all the time. It was my first time away from home and living on my own. Kind of a big step. That is a song that I still can listen to and feel all nostalgic about.
If these are the final songs then I still have a two left. I will reveal them as they are eliminated or if one wins.

Why do they have to be? I'm tired of everybody thinking we all need to explain our songs, we all need to open up and be SO REVEALING.
Why shouldn't they? I thought that'd kind of become the point. I'm not saying it has to be an in depth, detailed account of why, but something. If you're tired of it, don't read it. Skip to the next post.
Sometimes people are mysterious by nature. Let 'em be. Don't ask others to change just to get to know them. Let us be what we are. That's knowing somebody.
Wait? You're including yourself as mysterious?

Just in case anyone doesn't get the thinly veiled reference from Citizen Rules with his "glass houses" comment here's what he's talking about as he expressed it via pm's entitled "Was this post meant for me?":
If he really wants to equate my stating that I'm not voting for a song one time (on page 24) from someone on the grounds that they have already basically accused the tournament host of rigging things against their songs (on page 20) and that has already declared themself out of the tournament (on that same page 20, four pages prior to my comment) then that of course is his prerogative. Not something I agree with but as I say that's up to him.
As far as the "glass houses" comment goes - this is coming from someone that responded to the comment by Gbg that "I think it would be pretty funny if one of Derek's or Raul's songs wins this tournament." with this:
and this:
then all I can say is please take care when you get down from that high horse of yours as it must be one heck of a drop.
I said in the pm's I wasn't interested in any fight he was so obviously spoiling for and I still stand by that but equally I'll not just sit idly by with no reaction whatsoever when it's obvious little digs will continue to be made when the opportunity presents.
You're disclosing my PM in a public post! that's the lowest of the low! It's pathetic. You insult me first in an off hand way...and I do you the courtesy of not saying anything on the board but contact you direct so we can iron out our differences, and then you back stab me by posting my PM on a board, Big Mistake!

A bunch of mine were cut in the last round. Oh, you people! :bawling:
I will go into all of them later, though. I have something to do now. So, I don't have time to be online. And tonight/tomorrow we are getting snow. So...
This is your first experience hearing about snow from me. I swear that more falls in front of my garage than anywhere else in the entire city. And I always get plowed in (I swear to God that I'd just finished shoveling and the guy who plows for a nearby apartment building literally plowed me in as I was standing there ). So, while the rest of the world goes on with life after it snows, I tend to have to spend quite a bit of mine shoveling what's fallen.
Basically, what seems like pointless nonsense with what I am telling you right now is no more than me saying that I will most likely not make an appearance until late tomorrow night or early Sunday. And then I will reveal which songs were mine and why.
Also, I kind of want to wait to see if my last song will be kicked out in this round. If so, then I can include that with the others. :)

2 more of mine knocked out.
My wife used to sing You're No Good to me all the time. She didn't fully trust me for a long time, with how we met, people warning her, and the way I acted. One day about 5 years ago while sleeping on the sofa, I woke up to the house phone ringing. I saw that the caller id was that of one of my cell phones, and I almost died right there. Of course, it was my wife calling from one of my phones. She had come home from work early, only to find me sleeping next to 2 iPhones. She didn't even know I had 1, and so she grabbed them, left, and looked through them. I had to go meet her in a public place and hand over the house key in order to get my phones back. She might not look like it, but she doesn't mess around. In an instant, I had lost everything with no chance to give an explanation. She got a 30 day restraining order against me, just to keep me away. I stayed up on the other side of Boston, anxiously awaiting the hearing date with the judge. I went to my old bar, played You're No Good on the jukebox, and completely broke down. I then realized that even though I hadn't been mistreating her, I had neglected and deceived her. Prior to this moment, my thoughts were focused on the problems I was having. The judge decided that I wasn't a danger to her and said I could go home. He said it was one of the most bizarre cases he had ever heard. It took a while, but we talked and went to marriage counseling, and she decided to give us another try. Since then, I have been an excellent husband, and she now trusts me completely. It's perhaps my favorite song from a female artist, and Captain Spaulding was the only one to guess it was my nomination.
The Twilight Zone was also my nomination. I've gotten into this a little bit before so I'll try to keep it short. I started with sports gambling when I was 19 years old. I did plenty of winning and losing, but then everything changed in 2006 at the age of 35 when we bought our house. I didn't feel like we could really afford it, or at least afford it and still enjoy life. I hadn't gambled in about a year, but decided to start again hoping for some extra cash. I always bet with bookies and never told my wife. After 6 weeks of football, I was up 14 grand. 3 weeks later when it was gone, I kept going. I estimate that over the next 8 years I paid out about $500,000. But the thing is, how do I pay any money as a blue collar guy, whose paycheck gets directly deposited into my wife's checking account so she can pay the bills? I was in a constant scramble to pay this money without my wife finding out anything. Personal loans, borrowing money from everyone, maxing out every credit card I could get my hand on, and I was still friggin gambling. Credit cards have a cash advance limit, so I would go on craigslist and sell $500 gift cards for $400. I had to set up a secret mailing address, intercept mail, and do all kinds of sneaky things. I had absolutely no control over myself. There were times that what I had to pay in weekly interest alone, was more than my entire paycheck, which I wasn't touching anyway. There's no way I could make that kind of extra money unless I was doing something shady. I would leave home Sunday about 4:00pm, and I wouldn't come back until Saturday morning. After work I had to hustle for extra cash. All I would get during that time was quick naps in my car. After coming home Saturday morning, I'd sleep for a few hours, then leave again for the night. I'd return Sunday morning, sleep a few hours, then start it all over again. I did this for 3 straight years, not even taking a break for holidays. I was sick, and living off of Redbull and coffee. My wife thought I was working at night at the convention centers, and I used to give her about $100 for every night, telling her that was what I was making, but it was all lies. Just being out all night every night brings craziness. I'd be in the hole $80,000 at a time, then I'd lose another $20,000 in a weekend. I was going mad and would cry every day. Nobody knew what I was going through, complete desperation and hopelessness, and on the verge of suicide. My father knew some of the guys, and found out a couple times when I lost big. He told me I either needed to move across the country or rob a bank. I would search the side of the road for a bag of money. I used to hear this song all the time on the radio. "My whole life spins into a frenzy", for obvious reasons. "Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?", because I was going through it alone. All of the other lyrics I relate to as well. I lost all my friends because I had no time for them; I was spending all my time gambling and trying to pay down my debts. I finally stopped gambling for good in 2011 about a month after I joined this forum. Last December, I paid off the last of my debts. Miraculously I came out of everything just fine, keeping my home and my wife. I have been very fortunate, and all my troubles were of my own doing, but for a long time, I was truly in "The Twilight Zone".
(somewhere in a lonely hotel room,
There's a guy starting to realize
That eternal fate has turned its back on him,
It's two a.m...........)
It's two a.m., the fear has gone
I'm sittin' here waitin', the gun still warm
Maybe my connection is tired of takin' chances
Yeah there's a storm on the loose, sirens in my head
I'm wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead
I cannot decode, my whole life spins into a frenzy
Help I'm steppin' into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far
Help I'm steppin' into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far
Soon you will come to know,
When the bullet hits the bone
Soon you will come to know, when the bullet hits the bone
I'm falling down a spiral, destination unknown
A double-crossed messenger, all alone
I can't get no connection, can't get through, where are you
Well the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind
This far from the borderline
And when the hit man comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated
Help I'm steppin' into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far
Help I'm steppin' into the twilight zone
The place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go, now that I've gone too far

Me? the only story I have is: once I ate a few grapes in the grocery store, when no one else was around....I drove him and felt so guilty that I turned the car around and went back to the grocery store and I bought the grapes! and when they were being weight, I leaned on the scale to make up for the lost weight of the 3 grapes I had ate...The grapes ended up costing me $22.00.

Alright. My songs that were knocked out. As there were 4 songs, I will have to give 4 different reasons. None will be overly exciting or anything, but they are my reasons nonetheless. I will try to make them as brief as possible. But if I should ramble on, just remember that only the ones who voted against these songs have themselves to blame for my having to do this all at once. :yup:
One Less Set of Footsteps by Jim Croce
Truthfully, I am not going to go into all the truth about why I made this choice. I like Jim Croce. This has, probably, been my favorite of his for as long as I have listened to his music. I didn't choose it for that reason, though.
You know how people joke about not "understanding" the lyrics to a love song until they are in love? Well, I think the same can be said when you've experienced a very bad breakup. Details are not necessary. But let's just say that I consider this to be the ultimate breakup song. I am sure others would disagree, but I can honestly say that my feelings about such a thing as a particular breakup really connects with this song.
These lyrics:
If that's the way that you want it
Well, that's the way I want it more
Very simple. Very direct. And very much how I am. And while I am connecting this song to a man, I will be completely honest and say that I can associate those lyrics to other breakups that I might have had in regards to friends and some family members. I can be done with a person pretty fast when they've done wrong. And that is just the way that it is. After all, I can't keep dealing with people who just upset me and I can't mourn their loss when I still have my life to live.
Paint It Black - The Rolling Stone
First of all, apologies to Sexy Celebrity. I know it was torture to listen to. :) And then it had to go and be up against "Into the Groove". That was torture for me. It is incredibly hard for me to have to vote against Madonna. I gave in and voted for my song, though, instead of her. But I was punished for having done so. There are 3 songs by The Rolling Stones in this tournament. What were the odds that mine would be against "Penny Lane"? Apparently the gods of the song tournament weren't on my side during this round. :nope:
Now, why I chose this. I am not the biggest fan of theirs. They are OK. They just wouldn't be at the top of my list. But this is one of the songs that I like best by them. And it might be because the lyrics kind of describe how I feel a good amount of time. Truthfully. I don't care to go too much more into it, but I do get these lyrics so much that it kind of bothers me. It does. I don't like to be this way, but so many things in life depress me and I can't control it.
Anyway, enough of the theme of depression with this song. How about the color black? :) Like I posted previously, if any of you had been following me on Pinterest, you would've known which songs were mine. I have an entire board dedicated to the color black. :yup: I don't think a day goes by where I don't have something on that isn't black - even if it is just the thing in my hair to tie it back (that is always black). I have always wanted a black car. One of my rooms is partially painted black. I always imagined my dream house (that I am still going to own someday by some miracle) to be a pretty shade of lavender. But then I saw all of these houses painted black online and I never knew how good that really looks. So, I'd like to have a black house.
Oh! And I might as well mention these lyrics.
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I kind of hate sunny days. I do. They just give me a headache. Others get up and get going when it is bright and sunny out and I become completely lazy. Yet, when it is dark and gloomy, there is no telling how much I get accomplished on a day like that.
I don't know. Maybe I am just a vampire. :)
Onto the next....
I've Gotta Be Me by Sammy Davis, Jr.
Love Sammy. And I love this song. And I think his vocal performance is impeccable in this song. He is at his best right here. But none of these things made me choose this.
Citizen Rules asked me in my Grill a Mofo what made me tick. Well, CR, listen to this song and listen to it carefully. If there is one song that could 100% describe me, this is it.
I know people would like to think this song is about individuality and that we can all relate. But it really isn't that at all. At least I have never thought so. And this song has resonated with me since I was in high school. As I have gotten older, it has become even more a part of me. And over the past few years, I can't imagine a better song to speak for me.
Life really hasn't been fun for me. I won't go into details. But there has been a long string of events that have really affected the outcome of many things in my life. The past 10 years have been horrible, with this year being the worst. And it just seems that nothing ever seems to get better no matter how hard I try to make it so. And I do try. Luck just isn't on my side. And I deal with people who have this uncontrollable desire to tell me how to live my life. That I should do this or that knowing that I will be miserable if I do. Or basically saying things like "I've accepted that I am never going to have anything good in my life", which is saying that I should be that way, too. What they can't seem to get through their heads is that I need to make my own decisions, I need to live my own life, and even if I pretty much know that it really isn't going to get better, I can't just give in and take life as it is without the hope of something better coming along. If it is going to be that way, well, then I might as well curl up and die!
I have pretty much always felt that this song wasn't written for the individual in us all, but rather a song for those who are down on their luck, but refuse to give up. And I have also always thought that it was a big "Forget You" to the world (except I really mean a stronger word than "forget" - just can't write it here ;)). It is pretty much that I am going to be what I am going to be, and do what I am going to do, and I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks.
I can't settle. I just can't do it. It isn't in my nature. And to really know what kind of person I am, listen to the lyrics of this song.
Battle Cry of Freedom
Yes, folks. This was mine. :D And I know one person knew it for sure.
Why would I come up with such a song? Why not? :D Seriously, though, I was coming up with different ideas for "themes" for my various songs. I wanted to really make them different and to have really different reasons for why I chose them. So I started to wonder about songs that might involve hobbies of mine. Let's be honest here. How many songs are about something like crocheting? :) Then I thought about my keenest interests. I asked a few people I know to help me choose songs, and nobody could come up with anything! Yet, all I had to do was say to them "Should I nominate "Battle Cry of Freedom"?. They all immediately said "Do it!". :)
I didn't think it would make it past the first round. So, you guys surprised me. :) I might as well get the most boring (and longest) story over with now and finish this whole report. Wouldn't you agree?
I love the American Civil War. Why? I have no idea. I just do. I am not even a fan of war. Yet, I love it so much that it is almost borderline obsession. And I have these mini-obsessions with a few things, but this one that I have with the Civil War is a little different. It isn't glitzy and glamorous. It fact it is brutal and bloody. It isn't anything specific like a particular movie or book or whatever. It isn't based on any sort of entertainment. It is based on history. It is all facts.
I love everything about it. The battles, the people, the weapons (and I don't even care to ever own a gun! - but those Civil War ones are a different story), the drama, the clothes/uniforms, the music, the food, the stories, the architecture, the everything.
Now, why did this ever start? I don't really know. I wasn't ignorant. As far back as I can remember, I knew of the war. I knew that the north wore blue and the south wore gray. I knew the outcome of who "won". But I think things really got started when I visited Lincoln's house for the first time.
I knew who he was. I was pretty little when "The Birth of a Nation" was on TV. My brother told me that that was really Lincoln getting shot in it. I, of course, believed him because I was little enough to not know that movie cameras didn't exist then, but old enough to know who I saw that happen to. My mother set the record straight with me, though, when I asked her if that was him in that movie. They were always saying stuff to upset me.
I am going off my point, though. I was about 7 when I first went to Lincoln's house in Illinois. I can still remember how hot it was. It was later in the afternoon and in my mind it was so hot that the sky was orange. My mother went across the street to the gift shop while we went inside the home. I was fascinated by all of it. It was also my first time being inside a house so old. When we were done, I can remember going into that gift shop with the air conditioning at full blast almost knocking me out. And then when I left, all the air seemed to be sucked out of my lungs because of the heat. It was hell. Well, we went to the tomb afterwards. First we saw the very eerie original vault. That area still creeps me out to this very day. And the final tomb above that spot. There are all of these small statues of Lincoln in there. My brothers told me that his head was following me as I was walking by. And when we got to the spot where he is, my one brother told me that I was standing on top of him because that is how tall he was. I remember that bothering me and my mom having to get everything straight with me again.
Anyway, that was the start of the Lincoln obsession. With Lincoln comes the Civil War. That was a gradual thing. But by the time of "Glory" (which is still my all-time favorite movie), I was really hooked onto it. And Ken Burns' documentary didn't help it any either. So, time goes on and I have more and more access to things. Before you know it, it becomes an obsession.
I chose this song to represent one of my major interests. It also happens to be my favorite song of that period. I just love it. I chose this version because not only is it shorter, but I think it is one of the best I ever heard. I prefer choral or regimental band versions, but orchestral is fine, too. I just didn't want to nominate any that had a duo singing or something.
Also, I am a born and bred Yankee. So, I had to choose one that represented where I am from (although I do quite love the melody to "Bonnie Blue Flag"). And, truthfully, to let you into my nutty mind, "Battle Cry of Freedom" goes through my head quite often. Yes, I have lyrics from a song that is over 150 years old randomly enter my mind:
The Union forever
Hurrah, boys, hurrah
Down with the traitors
And up with the stars
If it isn't those words, I will have a non-Civil War song go through my head instead. Click on this (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jYm0WQf_sNI) and skip ahead to 0:29 and end at 0:38. Yes, that goes through my mind, too. I am a sad, sad person. :tsk:
I always wanted to be a reenactor. But there really isn't too much for a single woman to do. To hang around the encampments, I suppose I could be a nurse - or a prostitute. :D
Let's see. I have been to 10 battlefields (also, Harpers Ferry - twice), Ford's Theater (4 times), Lincoln's home/tomb in Illinois (6 times), the Lincoln Presidential Museum (5 times - my favorite place to visit) and Lincoln's homes in Indiana and Kentucky (1 time each). I am currently in semi-debt because I made it a goal to get to one civil war event during each year of 2011 through 2015 for the sesquicentennial, but that didn't happen. Yet, I did manage to make it down to Wilson's Creek (in Missouri) in August 2011, Gettysburg in July 2013 (I am still paying that trip off) and DC in April of this year. I went for the 150th anniversary events of Lincoln's assassination. That is so morbid, isn't it? And I earned enough points for free hotel nights. So, two weeks later I went down to Illinois for the reenactment of Lincoln's funeral.
I am such a dork! And I can't control it. :bawling:
Anyway, I am DONE. That is it! I have nothing else to say about my nominations (unless that last one gets kicked out, of course).
If you really did take the time to read it, THANK YOU! If you read it and it didn't bore you to tears, well, GOD BLESS YOU!! :D

Great post, Vamp! I would've never guessed you for Paint it Black, the song I thought would win.
Maybe GB's old flame saw her posts, they reconnected, and she left Hubby and us in the dust? That would be a great story that we could use in future song tournaments. Hubby could nominate Photograph from Ringo Starr-
"Ev'ry time i see your face,
It reminds me of the places we used to go.
But all i got is a photograph
And i realise you're not coming back anymore.
I thought i'd make it the day you went away,
But i can't make it
Till you come home again to stay-yi-yay-yi-yay.
I can't get used to living here,
While my heart is broke, my tears i cried for you.
I want you here to have and hold,
As the years go by and we grow old and grey.
Now you're expecting me to live without you,
But that's not something that i'm looking forward to.
I can't get used to living here,
While my heart is broke, my tears i cried for you.
I want you here to have and hold,
As the years go by and we grow old and grey.
Ev'ry time i see your face,
It reminds me of the places we used to go.
But all i got is a photograph
And i realise you're not coming back anymore.
Ev'ry time i see your face,
It reminds me of the places we used to go.
But all i got is a photograph
And i realise you're not coming back anymore.
Ev'ry time i see your face,
It reminds me of the places we used to go.
But all i got is a photograph
And i realise you're not."

Twice? Was it really that interesting? Or was it just so much that you had to read it a second time to comprehend my babble? :p
BTW, did you have any relatives in the Civil War?
I don't know. Maybe there is a distant cousin somewhere. I don't know. I kind of want to find one out of spite, though, because my brother told another brother that the only reason I do genealogy is to find a Civil War soldier in the family, and that I should know better because there probably isn't any. So, I kind of have to find one out of spite. But my biggest chance would be with some great-great-grand uncles in Iowa. The only problem is that they all have very basic surnames and first names. And there are a few in Iowa regiments with those names. Of course, one could've joined in Minnesota or Wisconsin, too, but most likely it would be with Iowa. And I haven't the vaguest clue as to how to really figure out exactly who those men are and if I am related to them. I am not too experienced with military research.
Yes, I guessed that Battle Cry of Freedom was your song, but I didn't want to spoil your fun so I never official guessed.

Freddie Mercury/David Bowie - Under Pressure (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuzmub5PXNQ)
"Under Pressure"
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you, no man ask for
Under pressure that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming, "Let me out!"
Tomorrow gets me higher
Pressure on people - people on streets
Chippin' around, kick my brains 'round the floor
These are the days - it never rains but it pours
People on streets - people on streets
It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming, "Let me out!"
Tomorrow gets me higher, higher, higher...
Pressure on people - people on streets
Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work
Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
Why, why, why?
Insanity laughs under pressure we're cracking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance?
Why can't we give love that one more chance?
Why can't we give love, give love, give love,
give love, give love, give love?..
'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure

I don't think so. I sent her a pm today, to hear if she is okay.

I just logged in, and I haven't had a chance to read all my messages yet, but I figured that most of them were basically trying to find out if I'm okay, if I left the site, or if I was coming back to finish this tournament. I just want to let everyone know that I'm okay, but I took the weekend off because I needed to get away from all of this for a few days.
I started this tournament because I thought it would be a fun way to get to know each other better, but it turned out to be a disaster. It's bad enough that people were dropping out of the tournament like flies, but it just became too much for me when people started leaving the site over this. It was never my intention for anyone to get hurt, but somehow, that's what happened. :(
Chypmunk sent me a message that he has already left the site for good, and he's not coming back. Hopefully he will reconsider, but sadly, it doesn't sound like he wants to come back to MoFo. :(
I don't know what else to say about this except that I'm sorry that people got hurt because of this tournament, and if anything that I said or did was any part of that, I sincerely apologize.

I agree with you.
GBG, I'm sure Chyp would be the first to say you haven't done anything wrong. You've been running a great tournament, we've been enjoying it and if people have chosen to leave its been nothing to do with you.
Let's get on with it :)

I started Round 5 and I even randomized the songs. Is it okay if we just go ahead with what I have done already?
I'm not surprised that you continued without me, so it's okay if you go ahead and finish the tournament. Hopefully people have learned from what happened here, and nobody else will get hurt.

Michael Jackson - Rock With You (4 votes) :bawling:
If there was one song that I wanted to win anything, it was this one right here.
:bawling:
No, I won't "punish" you all by making you suffer through another epic post on why I chose a song. But I will write a very tiny analysis of it, which is why I love it so. :D
Rock With You by Michael Jackson
This song is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite song, which happens to be from my all-time favorite album, "Off the Wall". I have listened to that album more than any other. And I have listened to that song more than I ever have the album. I am so crazy about "Rock With You" that I can never just listen to it once. It always ends up getting repeated another two or three times in a row. I nominated this song because it is my favorite. It is the only song that I didn't find some other big connection to except for the fact that I love it more than any other song ever created. It is really that simple. :)
I am in Heaven from the moment the drums start in the beginning. That beat. I love the beat. Then the music starts. So now we have this nice, mellow thing going on. And then he sings. From the moment I hear the words "Girl, close your eyes", I could just die. His voice in incredible in this song. Everything about this song is just so damn sexy. I just....I just don't know. It is all so great.
And do you want to know what tiny little bit that I like the best? It is the 8 seconds between 1:24 and 1:33 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5X-Mrc2l1d0&app=desktop). Eight seconds that are absolute musical bliss. :D
Now, I could actually go on and on about this song. I have done it to people before. But it is much easier to do so when I can make them suffer by making them actually listen to the song. That is easy to do in person. I have no such power over the people who hang out on the internet. :)
With that, I will shut up about this song now and go mourn its loss in this tournament.
And I know this has nothing to do with the song, but I have to say it. I love his outfit in that video. :)
By the way, there is this:
I also think SilentVamp may have nominated the Michael Jackson - Rock With You song that appeared yesterday
The only person to think it was mine. So now he will get his long overdue rep for it.

You know, I think I thought about nominating "Rock With You" for a few seconds while considering my songs because I really like the Off the Wall album, too, but I ultimately wouldn't have (and didn't, obviously) gone with that particular Michael Jackson song. But I think I did consider it. A lot of people thought that was my nomination at first.
I probably would have picked his song, "Human Nature" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y3dsAY_a_I) from the Thriller album if I had picked a Michael Jackson song.
I figured "Rock With You" was nominated by a woman and since Mistique said it wasn't hers, my mind went to SilentVamp. I know she likes pop music and '80s songs. If you like those two things, odds are you like Michael Jackson.

My favorite part of "Rock With You" is 2:15 to 2:27. When you hear that whistling sound -- I don't know what you call that instrument. It's very '70s. When you see his dancing, shimmering, glittery feet and Michael's shadow waving between them.

Like SC suspected, Driver's Seat was my last nomination to be eliminated. Being a truck driver adds a small bit of relation to the song for me, but that's not really how I think of it. I used to drive girls for a while, and Jenny was probably the most popular, and one of the girls I spent the most time with-
"Jenny was sweet
She always smiled for the people she meet
On trouble and strife
She had another way of looking at life
The news is blue (The news is blue)
Had it's own way to get to you
What can I do? (What can I do? )
I'll never remember my time with you
Pick up your feet
Got to move to the trick of the beat
There is no elite
Just take your place in the driver's seat
Driver's seat, driver's seat, yeah"
The song is also featured in one of my favorite movies, Boogie Nights, and that just adds to the whole aura of the song for me-
