I noticed that Gatsby skipped a few matches in ROUND 1 - DAY 3, but the winners of those matches aren't affected by his votes, so we're almost ready to post the results of that set.

However we need a tiebreaker for this match:

Imogen Heap ft. Jeff Beck - Blanket (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sazroMF4Bxk) vs. Head East-Never Been Any Reason (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R7jW8_2Us5c)

Anyone who has not voted can break this tie.

Blanket

Thank You to Redwell for breaking this tie.

I'm 0 from 3 so far. Hopefully my remaining songs do better.

As a few people guessed, China Girl was mine because that's where my wife is from. I'm actually not a big fan of that song (although I do generally like David Bowie) but it is appropriate. Stopping All Stations was also mine - it tells a story of three people riding an early morning train - an elderly war veteran, a stripper on her way home and a young heroin addict who tries to rob them. I can relate to all three characters due to people in my life and the final few lines really move me:

A real man never lays his hands on a woman,
A real man would know that, no surprise that you wouldn't,
I didn't fight in two wars just so forty years later,
You'd have the freedom to rob me on the train this behaviour,
Doesn't fit with what I gave this country so cut me,
Won't live another day in a world that's so ugly.

I think Christine guessed this was mine because the Hilltop Hoods are Australian.

Also, thanks gbgoodies for changing how I listed my songs - now no one can automatically tell which are mine - and there are two in this last group ;)

Nice sentiments in your choice Cricket :)
Same I just linked you to the Hilltop Hoods cos they were Australian, I liked the song too, the lyrics are great :)

You're wrong about this being mine. There will be no more Jackson family members in my nominations.

I think it's Mistique because I remember she once nominated "Beat It" and it got really far.

Guess again.

You missed 3 matches, Gats, and where are your guesses?
I was in a hurry (been busy all day and now I'm finally at home) so I missed a few by accident.

@Chyp that Radiohead song is my favorite from the band; I almost voted for it. Good guess, keep it up.

Ok, time to 'fess up for me ....

Julian Moon - A Cup Of Coffee (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qrQN6eJxQ-k)

was mine. Whilst I do drink a lot of coffee that's not the reason I put it forward, nor is it because I've worked in customer facing jobs nor again because I don't like people that complain (sorry to Gbg if she spend a couple of days thinking that might be the reason).

The reason I nominated this is I am actually completely unable to go into any of those 'barista' type places on my own and even when with my wife she has to order for me. I'm not particularly daunted by the ridiculous number of choices and I actually quite like the fact you can tell them any auld bollix to write on the cup for identification purposes (I've been Mr. Dunkelnuts a few times) .... I just abhor the pseudo-intellectual pretence of it all - it's not a scientific endeavour, it really is just a fkn cup of coffee and I point blank refuse to ask for it in any other terms (they can shove their 'single-shot Americano with low-fat please' where the sun don't shine) :)

Well done to Captain for considering myself for that one - well remembered that I put up a track of my nieces in one of these though it was in a recording studio not a coffee-house ;)

ah I wouldn't have given you that one, but I do agree with your sentiments and the song made me laugh too. I don't drink coffee but they do try to mess around with tea now too. Was in one the other day that makes you stand there and wait for the tea to brew with a bleedin little alarm stopwatch thingy, and even then the tea comes out like rainwater.

It's all just so ........ $5 for a $2 beverage because it's been poncified imo :)

You think that one was difficult to guess - there's one that I'm absolutely dreading having to explain whenever that need arises .... my only chance is that it wins the whole thing and then technically I don't have to go down the whole embarrassing route as it never got knocked out :D

hmmm how intriguing....

Is it my love for Eurovision which is pointing people towards Codo being mine?

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:

Guns N' Roses - Ain't it Fun vs. Slaughter - Up All Night

Billy Murray - K-K-K-Katy vs. 28 Days - What's the Deal

Shirley and Carmine - There Was You vs. Michael Jackson - Rock With You

Anthrax - Lone Justice vs. Z Cars Theme - Surely this is Christine. It could be a coincidence, but this is the tune her Toffee's famously run out to at home. I think the same is true of Lone Justice. It's so much a GS song that, if it isn't his, it should've been. :D

DOF - Codo vs. The Scaffold - Liverpool Lou - I'm going with Christine again here for the reasons others have stated.

Sniff 'n the Tears - Driver's Seat vs. Radiohead - Karma Police

Black Flag - TV Party vs. Hair: The Musical - Hair

Kira Nerys - Fever vs. Cameo - Word Up

Laverne & Shirley - High Hopes vs. Battle Cry of Freedom - I apologise to whoever nominated Battle Cry of Freedom but, for reasons I've never been able to explain, I love High Hopes. I'll quite happily sing it to myself for no reason and I'm probably going to be doing that for the rest of today. :D

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:

Guns N' Roses - Ain't it Fun vs. Slaughter - Up All Night - Aint it Fun - Gatsby, and maybe Up All Night is HK's cos he's often up in the wee hours

Billy Murray - K-K-K-Katy vs. 28 Days - What's the Deal -
- I think What's the Deal is Slobs too and Katy is Sv's

Shirley and Carmine - There Was You vs. Michael Jackson - Rock With You -
- both the Laverne and Shirely's are CR's I'm pretty sure, and MJ belongs to Capt
Anthrax - Lone Justice vs. Z Cars Theme -Anthrax is Guns and Z Cars , not sure as there's no lyrics!

DOF - Codo vs. The Scaffold - Liverpool Lou - Codo seems like the kind of Europop HK is a fan of

Sniff 'n the Tears - Driver's Seat vs. Radiohead - Karma Police - Is Drivers Seat Crickets and Radiohead is Sanes?

Black Flag - TV Party vs. Hair: The Musical - Hair - Black Flag seems like a Slob one too but am I just giving him all the drinkimng songs! Hair is GBGs

Kira Nerys - Fever vs. Cameo - Word Up - Fever is SV's and Cameo is a great song so I'll give that to Chyp

Laverne & Shirley - High Hopes vs. Battle Cry of Freedom - first one CR and last one...there was someone that nominated a few marching type songs in a tourney a while back..was it Mistique?

Captain Spaulding

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:

Guns N' Roses - Ain't it Fun vs. Slaughter - Up All Night
(Excellent match-up. Both of these songs could easily be mine. I'm going to guess cricket for "Ain't It Fun." I doubt a non-GNR fan would even know about this song. And judging from personal stories he's shared with us in the past, he knows what it's like be spiraling out of control. I don't know who to guess for "Up All Night." Who are my fellow vampires? I would've said SC, but he would've already claimed it if it was his nomination.)

Billy Murray - K-K-K-Katy vs. 28 Days - What's the Deal
(Not a fan of either song. SilentVamp admitted to liking old stuff, and "K-K-K-Katy" is older than the cobwebs in my great grandmother's vagina. I rarely like anything that Derek nominates, so maybe "What's the Deal" is his. Apparently this 28 Days group is Australian. Wasn't someone -- Sane, maybe? -- revealed to be Australian?)

Shirley and Carmine - There Was You vs. Michael Jackson - Rock With You
(I've never watched an episode of Laverne and Shirley, but it looks like something GBG would be into. I hope whoever nominated "Rock With You" is about to tell us that they once shared a bed with Michael Jackson and drank some of his Jesus juice. Maybe cricket once got laid in the backseat while this song was playing. It's a sexy song. I'm a little aroused myself.)

Anthrax - Lone Justice vs. Z Cars Theme
(Gunslinger has already nominated one Anthrax song relating to his career in law enforcement, so I'm assuming this is another one. I liked "I Am the Law" more than "Lone Justice." I'm going to guess Citizen Rules for whatever that second thing was.)

DOF - Codo vs. The Scaffold - Liverpool Lou
(Man, there's some weird ***** showing up in this set. If nostromo87 hadn't already said that none of his songs are in this set, I would've picked "Codo" for him due to his eccentric nature. Instead I'll go with honeykid because he's honeykid and who knows what the hell he relates to. Christine seems like a reasonable guess for "Liverpool Lou.")

Sniff 'n the Tears - Driver's Seat vs. Radiohead - Karma Police
(I was going to go with SC's reason for guessing cricket for "Driver's Seat," but that seems too literal, especially for a song that clearly isn't about driving. Maybe this is honeykid again. I think Radiohead is the most overrated band in the history of overrated bands. I'll guess Sane for them.)

Black Flag - TV Party vs. Hair: The Musical - Hair
(I feel very confident that "TV Party" is Sci-Fi Slob. He loves punk rock and the lyrics about "nothing better to do but watch TV and have a couple of brews" fits him to a tee -- except, in his case, it's more like a couple hundred of brews. I thought about nominating "Hair" for myself since I have long hair and I feel like it's become a big part of my identity, but then I listened to the song and realized that it's more annoying than enjoyable. I'm going to guess mistique nominated it.)

Kira Nerys - Fever vs. Cameo - Word Up
(As soon as I saw that the first song was from Star Trek, I assumed it was from GBG. "Word Up" is an awesome song that I haven't heard in forever. My first guess would've been SC. My second guess will be honeykid.)

Laverne & Shirley - High Hopes vs. Battle Cry of Freedom
(Two Laverne & Shirley songs in one set? How weird will it be if they're nominated from different people? I guessed GBG earlier. Citizen Rules is also a possibility. Apparently whoever nominated "Battle Cry to Freedom" once fought in the Confederacy. I look forward to hearing your war stories. Maybe SilentVamp is a time-traveler.)

ROUND 1 - DAY 4:

Billy Murray - K-K-K-Katy

Is someone here married to someone named "Katy" or maybe "Kate"?

Shirley and Carmine - There Was You

There's no doubt in my mind that this is a Citizen Rules nomination based on his love of the TV show "Laverne & Shirley".

Michael Jackson - Rock With You

I thought this was a Sexy Celebrity nomination, but he already said it isn't. I think he might be lying because it sounds like his kind of song.

Anthrax - Lone Justice

Between the artist being Anthrax, and the song being called "Lone Justice", I guessed this was a Gunslinger nomination before I even listened to it.

Z Cars Theme

Didn't Honeykid nominate this song in the TV Theme Show Song Tournament? My guess is that HK nominated it here too.

The Scaffold - Liverpool Lou

The word "Liverpool" made me think this might be Christine's nom.

Sniff 'n the Tears - Driver's Seat

I'm not sure why, but Cricket popped into my head for this song.

Radiohead - Karma Police

The word "Police" in the title made me think of Gunslinger for this song, but it doesn't sound like his type of music, so I'm not too sure about this guess.

Hair: The Musical - Hair

Several people seem to think this is my nomination, but nope. Hair is one of the few musicals that I don't think I've ever seen. (Although I have the DVD because it's one of the few musicals that Hubby likes.)

The song is called "Hair". Maybe this is Honeykid's nomination? Have you seen HK's profile banner with Drew Barrymore?

Kira Nerys - Fever

Based on the fact that this is from "Star Trek", I'll guess that this is either a Sci-Fi-Slob nomination or a Citizen Rules nomination. Based on the type of music, it has to be Citizen Rules. (I love the song "Fever", and I love "Star Trek", but DS9 is my least favorite "Star Trek" show, so it's not my nomination.)

Laverne & Shirley - High Hopes

This song is definitely another Citizen Rules nomination. I love this song, and watching Laverne & Shirley sing it was my favorite part of the show.

Battle Cry of Freedom

This is probably someone who has an interest in war and/or history. For some reason, SilentVamp popped into my mind for this one.

Guns N' Roses - Ain't it Fun vs. Slaughter - Up All Night
That GNR song is a hidden gem so only fans know about it... but Captain and cricket have denied it being their song so I'll just go with Sexy. I have no idea who nominated the other song so I'll say DV (are his songs still in even though he's out?)
Billy Murray - K-K-K-Katy vs. 28 Days - What's the Deal
That old song must be from CR since he's an oldie and a fan of even older stuff and the laid back attitude of "What's the Deal" reminds me of Nostro.
Shirley and Carmine - There Was You vs. Michael Jackson - Rock With You
GBG for the first one and cricket for that awesome Micheal Jackson song.
Anthrax - Lone Justice vs. Z Cars Theme
We already know "Lone Justice" is GS's song, very obvious choice from him. The other one seems like a Tugg song.
DOF - Codo vs. The Scaffold - Liverpool Lou

Sniff 'n the Tears - Driver's Seat vs. Radiohead - Karma Police
I don't if Sane is a Radiohead fan, but I'll just say Karma Police is his (or her? I don't remember lol) because of the atmopshere it it has
Black Flag - TV Party vs. Hair: The Musical - Hair
The person I'd imagine doing a TV party in an 80s fashion is either Sexy or CS, but Sexy's song have popped way too much these past few days so I'll go with Captain. I'll go with Silentvamp for the other song since he's a fan of musicals.

Alkaline Trio - Radio vs. Ted Nugent - Fred Bear...Radio! ohh that's some messed up lyrics, Sci Fi Slob....Fred Bear, that's a tough one but woods and bears I'd say Spaulding.

Eminem - Lose Yourself vs. Lyda Roberti - My Cousin In Milwaukee...Eminem I'd say Tugg. Lyda Roberti I'd say Vamp.

Metallica - I Disappear vs. AFI - Silver and Cold...I believe Gatsby likes driving fast cars and jumping out of windows so Metallica is his. AFI I'd say is Mystique's cause she's a girl.

Eddy Arnold - Make the World Go Away vs. Aerosmith - The Other Side....Make the World Go Away sounds like a Christine song. The Other Side, hmmm who wants to go to the other side, I'm not even sure what the other side is? but if someone is going there it's Spaulding.

Garth Brooks - Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) vs. Outkast - SpottieOttieDopalicius...Garth Brooks has to be GBG but she ain't old, she's still a youngster:)...Outkast goes to Nostro.

Cheap Trick - In the Street vs. Paramore - Daydreaming...no guess on Cheap Trick could be anybodies, actually I'm taking wild guesses on most of these. Paramore no guess either.

Magic Dirt - Rabbit with Fangs vs. Foreigner - Dirty White Boy....Rabbit with Fangs another angry song, who else is angry besides Sci Fi Slob?....Dirty White Boy, umm isn't that half of us? That sounds like Cricket could relate to that one.

Seven of Nine - It Can't Be Wrong vs. Henri Mancini - Theme from The Pink Panther...I'm pretty sure GBG picked one of those songs.

Billy Joel - Captain Jack vs. The Fray - Love Don’t Die...Captain Jack... I believe Tugg has a Boat;) so he must fancy himself a sailing man, Captain Jack is his ode to the sea. Love Don't Die....sounds like Nickleback so must be dearly departed Derek.

Eddy Arnold - Make the World Go Away vs. Aerosmith - The Other Side....Make the World Go Away sounds like a Christine song. The Other Side, hmmm who wants to go to the other side, I'm not even sure what the other side is? but if someone is going there it's Spaulding.

Ha! nope not that party:eek:, but the person front middle looks like a girl and smiles like a girl. I can't smile for a photo without looking odd, most guys are not good at smiling, even if there wearing a dress. But girls can smile easily, at least most of them.

I don't get the people leaving. None of us knows whose song is whose and we've known that from the start. None of this is personal. I can understand that not having a song which means something to you being voted against could hurt more than a normal song tournament, but it's far less personal than a usual tournament. The thing I like most about this tournament, so far, is that no one is voting for/against my songs because it's mine. I don't know if people do that or not, but I do know that they can't on this one.

I would like to know what their songs were and why they put them up, though. Maybe not now, but once the song is out.

Some of you guessed it, this is my song. I think it's a fun song, and praises the more nerdy culture. I wasn't bullied as bad as it comes across in the song, but I would say the last two years of school, weren't that fun. Thanks to Sexy for nominating one of my favorite rap songs (great lyrics too, everyone should give it a read), as for that other song, it again awfully sounds like CR.
Metallica - I Disappear vs. AFI - Silver and Cold
I like that Metallica song, but it's not mine. That AFI song sounds like HK because (1) he's an alt rock fan and (2) I didn't like the song at all. If I'm not correct i'll be surprised. ;)
Eddy Arnold - Make the World Go Away vs. Aerosmith - The Other Side
A lot people seem to associate me with angst, which is totally accurate, but I'm not a teenager anymore so no I didn't nominate "Make the World Go Away". Cricket is the biggest Aerosmith fan of the board so "The Other Side" must be his.
Garth Brooks - Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) vs. Outkast - SpottieOttieDopalicius
Kinda obvious as to who nominated the first song (country = ya know who) but like Chyp I have no idea who owns the other song. I'll take a guess and say Chyp... exactly because he has no idea who's song it is. I might be overthinking it but that's all part of the game isn't it?
Cheap Trick - In the Street vs. Paramore - Daydreaming
Captain for the first one and Sane for the other one
Magic Dirt - Rabbit with Fangs vs. Foreigner - Dirty White Boy
"Dirty White Boy" sounds like a typical Sexy or cricket song but I'm going to gamble and say it's from SFS, cuz booze and diarrhea to make a dirty white boy

I'm having a hard time with guesses for these matches because I'm very sick and it's making it hard to concentrate, but I'll throw out a few guesses that are probably way off base.

ROUND 1 - DAY 5:

Ted Nugent - Fred Bear

I don't know why, but this just sounds like something Cricket might nominate.

Lyda Roberti - My Cousin In Milwaukee

This is either Citizen Rules because of the connection between "Laverne & Shirley" and Milwaukee, or it's SilentVamp based on the style of the music.

Metallica - I Disappear

This is probably Gunslinger because it's metal, like the previous "law" songs.

AFI - Silver and Cold

For some reason, Sane popped into my head while listening to this song.

Aerosmith - The Other Side

My guess is either Cricket or Honeykid for this song just based on previous song tournament nominations.

Cheap Trick - In the Street

Somebody here probably likes "That 70's Show", but I don't know who. Maybe either Sexy Celebrity or Captain Spaulding?

Seven of Nine - It Can't Be Wrong

Another "Star Trek" nomination makes me think this must be either Citizen Rules or Sci-Fi Slob, but again, it doesn't seem like the type of song SFS would nominate, so I'll guess it's CR.

Henri Mancini - Theme from The Pink Panther

We obviously have a Pink Panther fan here, but again, I don't know who. For some reason, Chypmunk popped into my mind for this one.

Billy Joel - Captain Jack

This is one of Billy Joel's best songs, but it's also kind of depressing, so I'm kind of curious who connected with it enough to nominate it.

Captain Spaulding

ROUND 1 - DAY 5:

Alkaline Trio - Radio vs. Ted Nugent - Fred Bear
(As many of you have properly guessed, "Fred Bear" is my nomination. I'll explain why in my next post. As soon as I heard the lyrics, "Shaking like a dog sh!tting razor blades," I immediately thought of Sci-Fi Slob. "Radio" must be his.)

Eminem - Lose Yourself vs. Lyda Roberti - My Cousin In Milwaukee
(I never would've guessed SC for "Lose Yourself." I'm not a big Eminem fan, but "Lose Yourself" is arguably the best thing he's done. I'm assuming SilentVamp for the other song since it's so old. I'm curious to hear her reasons behind some of these songs (if indeed she is the one nominating them). I hope there's a better story behind it than just "I have a cousin that lives in Milwaukee.")

Metallica - I Disappear vs. AFI - Silver and Cold
(Derek is always a possibility for Metallica, but I'm going to guess Gunslinger instead. I think this is a very underrated Metallica track. I've listened to the Mission Impossible: 2 soundtrack that it's from many times. Since Gunslinger is just a couple of years older than me, I think he's much more likely than Derek to have some cool memories attached to the song. Maybe Derek nominated the AFI song.)

Eddy Arnold - Make the World Go Away vs. Aerosmith - The Other Side
(I can't guess GBG for every country song that shows up, but she's always the safest bet. "Make the world go away" is probably her wish every time a restaurant doesn't get her order right. Cricket is my guess for "The Other Side." I like both of these songs, but "Make the World Go Away" is no match for almighty Aerosmith.)

Garth Brooks - Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) vs. Outkast - SpottieOttieDopalicius
(Just to shake things up, I'm going to guess rauldc14 for Garth Brooks instead of the obvious choice in GBG. He's younger than me, yet he comes across as much more world weary. I guess that's what working at Wal-Mart does to a man. I like to think that I would've guessed Nostromo87 for Outkast even if he hadn't already confessed. First time hearing it, but it's an excellent song.)

Cheap Trick - In the Street vs. Paramore - Daydreaming
("In the Street" is my nomination. Since my explanation behind it was so long (and extremely personal), I'll post it separately. I'll go with mistique for Paramore.)

Magic Dirt - Rabbit with Fangs vs. Foreigner - Dirty White Boy
(Cricket is the dirtiest white boy here, so surely that's his nomination. I should probably be concerned for whoever relates to "Rabbit With Fangs." The previous times I've said that about a nomination, they turned out to be from Sane, so I'll stick with him. If so, I love how his musical taste is the complete opposite of what I would've expected based on his taste in movies. I like both of these songs a lot, but chicks with attitude and a guitar turn me on, so Magic Dirt gets my vote.)

Seven of Nine - It Can't Be Wrong vs. Henri Mancini - Theme from The Pink Panther
(Apparently the previous Star Trek song wasn't from GBG after all. This has to be her or Citizen Rules, though. Unless The Rodent secretly submitted a ballot. The Pink Panther theme is one of the greatest of all-time. No idea who might have nominated it. Random guess says Chypmunk.)

Billy Joel - Captain Jack vs. The Fray - Love Don’t Die
(I'm very curious to see who nominated "Captain Jack." Cricket, Nostromo and Sci-Fi Slob seem like the biggest possibilities. I wouldn't rule out Gatsby, either. Even though he seems like a good little Christian Korean on the outside, I've talked to him enough to know that he's got a deviant streak. I'm sure he's done a lot of staring at closet queens and sitting at home masturbating. This is my first time hearing the song, otherwise I could've nominated it. Most of the lyrics certainly fit. I'll guess Tugg for The Fray song.)

I believe Tugg has a Boat so he must fancy himself a sailing man, Captain Jack is his ode to the sea.

Billy Joel "Captain Jack" (1973) there were times in autumn 2012 after couple dry days from alcohol I would get some money and that meant I was getting high on alcohol again. The song became hymn for resumption of alcoholic intoxication. Besides, lyrics "and you just sit at home and masturbate" is totally me and "ahh, but still your finger's gonna pick your nose" resonates with me. Also "and you guess you won't be going back to school anymore" is a statment of defiance.
Albinoni is less cut and dried for me (but most likely equally incorrect) - I'll plump for Tugg though there are a few that I'm sure will be enjoyers of this piece including myself.
Albinoni's Adagio In G Minor is my favorite classical piece I used to listen in 2005/2006 the most.

My previous post was too unwieldy when including my reasons behind these songs, so I decided to make a separate post.

https://mdeitchley.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/ted_nugent4.jpg

"Fred Bear" is the first song that sprang to mind when this tournament was introduced. My dad used to have this album on cassette. I loved this song when I was a kid. I'd listen to it over and over, rewinding and fast-forwarding until I'd find it on the tape. At that age I just assumed that the song was about an actual bear named Fred. I was already very familiar with Ted Nugent since my dad owned several of his hunting videos. I've always loved animals too much to want to go out and kill them. So I've never been into hunting or fishing or anything like that. I'm sure that used to disappoint my father since hunting was his biggest passion. He did buy me a bow and arrow when I was around 8 or 9. Archery proceeded to become a big hobby of mine over the next few years. My dad had several targets on our property with various yardage marked off. We'd practice shooting together fairly often. We even went to a few local tournaments. I actually won a couple of trophies for placing in the top three of my age group. I'm not really an outdoors man in the sense that I go camping and hiking and stuff, but I'm much more at home when surrounded by woods and pastures and wildlife than buildings and traffic. When I listen to this song, I'm reminded of the years when my father and I bonded closer than we have at any other point in my life. I'm reminded of my childhood home. I'm reminded of running through the woods with my dogs, riding on the back of my dad's four-wheeler. I'm reminded of a happier, simpler time.

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130501024540/degrassi/images/2/27/Ashton-kutcher-that-70s-show.gif

"In the Street" is my nomination. The song itself means nothing to me, only its affiliation with That 70's Show. Those happy, simple times I referenced when talking about "Fred Bear" went to ***** during my teenage years. Long story short, my father became addicted to crystal meth and basically turned into a raging psychopath. He was obsessed with the idea of my mom cheating on him, so he'd threaten her, throw her around, point guns at her. He'd shoot holes into the wall. He lost his business, burnt through their savings. We lost everything. My mom and I eventually got away and starting moving from place to place, still living in fear of him coming after us. It was a struggle, though, since she didn't make much money and her credit was ruined. To make matters worse, I also went through a break-up around that time. It was my first serious relationship. We'd been together for a couple of years. I'd lost my virginity to her and all that good stuff. With everything else going on, I felt like she was my ticket to a better life, figuring that after graduation we'd move away together, get married, etc. Now that prospect was gone. So I was in a dark place. My life had been torn apart. I felt like I'd lost everything I cared about. I was living in a new town. No friends. Nothing to do. I started laying out of school a lot, did a lot of moping around, wallowing in self-pity, sleeping, not caring whether I lived or died.

That 70's Show was in syndication. It came on every afternoon at like 4:00 and 4:30 on one of the 5 channels we were able to pick up with our rabbit-ears antenna. Most days I was just rolling out of bed at that time. So I started watching the show every day. I immediately fell in love with the show. I've always felt like I would've fit in more in the 60's and 70's, especially if I could've been a teenager back then. That 70's Show was wish-fulfillment for me, basically -- a scripted fantasy of what I wanted my life to look like. For back-to-back episodes it took my mind off of everything else. The show gave me something to look forward to every day when I had nothing else. As lame as it sounds, the characters became the only friends I had during those dark days. Since I've always felt like my teenage years were stolen from me, I've basically spent my entire 20's trying to make up for it. Getting into some of the same antics you'd find on the show. Heading out with friends on a Friday or Saturday night with no plan in sight just to see what kind of trouble we can get into. Smoking too much pot. Just trying to have fun and avoid responsibility as often as possible. My emotional connection with the show is why I nominated this song. But I think even the song itself does a good job of capturing the spirit of trying to party and have a good time even when living in a small town where not much happens.

There's some soul being exposed in these song choices. Music's like that tho hey, it gets into your head and hearing old songs can pinpoint even tiny moments in your life with sometimes gut wrenching memories.
That was some happy and sad stuff there Capt xxx. Hope you're getting through things ok, you too Tugg

Tugg - I think there are quite a number on here that have led far from 'storybook' lives - must be something about the escapism of film that attracts us - hope things are much improved for you!

I believe when you're watching a movie, it's not that much different than experiencing a dream at night -- you're escaping into another world and mentally putting yourself into the bodies of other people, experiencing what they experience, feeling what they feel, etc. This forum is all about escape.

ROUND 1 - DAY 6:

Leonard Cohan - Waiting for the Miracle vs. Incubus - Stellar....Cricket on the the 1st, Sane on the 2nd.

Billy Talent - Swallowed Up By The Ocean vs. Bob Seger - Ramblin Gamblin Man....No guesses. Actually I have a good guess for Ramblin Gamblin Man but as he's not in the contest I'm not guess at his songs.

Bessie Smith - Gimme a Pig Foot and a Bottle of Beer vs. Mortal Kombat Theme Song...I wonder who picked that classic tune;) Video Game Music I would say Friendly Mushroom but he's not in this one, so no guesses here either.

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well vs. Christina Perri - Human...Oh Well is Christine's, second one Mistique. Sorry I keep spelling your name like this: Mystique

Adam Sandler - The Chanukah Song vs. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone...I love the Golden Earring song but I'm voting for Adam Sandler as like Rodney Dangerfield he get's no respect! GBG is Jewish so I'm guessing she plays that song as she spins the dreidel at Chankah:)...Twilight Zone...'my life spins into a frenzy'...that was Cricket before he met Mrs Cricket.:)

Madonna - Into the Groove vs. Albinoni's Adagio In G Minor...I read that SC chose Madonna, I might have guessed HK. The second one belongs to someone with a refined taste in music!

Styx - Too Much Time on My Hands vs. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black...Who has too much time on their hands? Or is the song about having phoney friends who only hand around as long as your buying? Paint it Black belongs to...oh heck I don't know.

Sevendust - Angel's Son vs. Jason Mraz - I Won’t Give Up...both of those songs are Sane's.

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream vs. Gary Jules - Mad World...Mad World, It's a soulful song, but sure is dismal, 'The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had'...I don't know who but I want to hear why they chose it:D

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well vs. Christina Perri - Human - Both Cricket and HK like girl singers, and this is a lovely song. I like the Fleetwood Mac too

For today:
Madonna - Into the Groove: I was going to say SC, but whatever! I don't think I am ever going to get on here in time before any of those songs are revealed. :nope:
Mortal Kombat Theme Song: Captain Spaulding
Bessie Smith - Gimme a Pig Foot and a Bottle of Beer: Citizen Rules

Up All Night was mine and, apart from having always loved the song, the title could've been the anthem of my life. Up until this year, I've never been able to control my sleep pattern. Since I was a baby I've never been one for sleeping at night. As a kid, it was up all day, too, but since my mid teens, it's definitely been sleep all day.

I do feel/have felt as if I 'come alive' at night, though.

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better...GBG likes country but not old country so much, and she's not into wine, so it's not her song. I bet it's Christine's. No guess on Carly Simon song.

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem.....The ebay Song ha! GBG. The other one had Christian symbols, is Gatsby from North or South Korea? If South then that's his song.

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change....Believe it or not I use to like the Culture Club and I was never a fan of the Scorpions. CC is SC. Scorps is Cricks.

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.) The first one belongs to someone who hasn't voted, so no name guessing for me. I love Penny Lane, Vamp might seem like the logical choice but I'm sure Penny Lane and Michelle are two Beatle songs she doesn't like. So....Penny Lane is HoneyKids.

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance....Cheeseburgers must be GBG. Safety Dance I got to go with HoneyKid again.

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes...Sane has good taste and Hips Don't Lie is a tastefully done Rap type song so it's his. The other darker song belongs to the person who shall remain nameless until he votes.

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun...Lot's of depressing songs in this round, I'll go for the classic with Bing, who hails from my home state!

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow...What's up with all the Laverne and Lenny songs? That one did crack me up:D

It might be Derek's. I do remember him liking that. Usually, Gunslinger whispers to me in a post comment if the song's his or not. He didn't with that one. But I don't know... I just had a strong feeling with him about that one. But I tend to always think Gunslinger nominated EVERYTHING.

Still, the lyrics speak of soldiers. Gunslinger was a soldier.

ROUND 1 - DAY 6:

Leonard Cohan - Waiting for the Miracle

I don't know why, but I think this might have been nominated by either Nostromo87 or Captain Spaulding.

Incubus - Stellar

The video has a sci-fi feel to it, so I'll guess The Sci-Fi Slob for this song.

Billy Talent - Swallowed Up By The Ocean

I think Derek has nominated Billy Talent songs in previous tournaments, so I'll guess Derek for this song.

Bob Seger - Ramblin Gamblin Man

I think I remember Cricket nominating some Bob Seger songs in the past, and I think I also remember some kind of connection to gambling, so I'll guess Cricket for this song.

Mortal Kombat Theme Song

For some reason Gatsby popped into my mind for this song, but I don't know why.

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well

I would have guessed Miss Vicky nominated this song, but she didn't join the tournament, so

Christina Perri - Human

My gut feeling is that this was nominated by a woman, but I don't think it sounds like either SIlentVamp's or Christine's type of song, so I'll guess Mistique.

Golden Earring - Twilight Zone

I think remember Cricket nominating this in a previous song tournament, so I'll guess Cricket for this song.

Albinoni's Adagio In G Minor

This is a tough one because it's just beautiful music set to a beautiful slideshow. Maybe Chypmunk or Tugg?

Styx - Too Much Time on My Hands

I probably would have guessed Sexy Celebrity for this song, but he's already outed all his noms, so I'll guess this is either Honeykid or Cricket based on their past nominations.

The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black

I'm not a Rolling Stones fan, so I never really listened to the lyrics of this song before. This is actually a pretty depressing song. Maybe a Sci-F-Slob nomination from all his drinking?

Sevendust - Angel's Son

This sounds like Derek's type of music, but not his type of lyrics. This was probably nominated by someone who suffered a devastating loss. :(

Jason Mraz - I Won’t Give Up

This was nominated by a romantic, maybe Christine or SilentVamp.

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream

I think I remember Christine saying how much she loves Bob Dylan back in the Folk Song Tournament, so I'm going to guess Christine for this song.

Gary Jules - Mad World

If I remember correctly, this is a favorite song of Derek's, so my guess is it's his nomination.

Isn't "Nobody Does It Better" a big favorite of HONEYKID's?

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.)

THAT Love/Hate thing is definitely HONEYKID. He's nominated it before.

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

"All the Young Dudes" has been nominated by HONEYKID before.... but I think I've discovered too many Honeykid songs. I don't know if that's his or not. Very well could be.

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song

The problem is that I'm not 100% sure of their nominations, and even if I was, I can't remove their songs without messing up the rounds in the tournament.

There is going to be one match in a later round that should have three songs in it, so I might be able to remove one of their songs at that point so that nobody loses to it in a three-way match. I'll just have to verify with JayDee at least one of their songs that's still in at that point.

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well

Time to fess up - this is my song. I can tell you guys didn't see this one coming. I'm not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan because some of their stuff work with me and others don't. but most of their early discography is legendary. They made all the popular rock and roll song arrangement tropes yet rarely credit for doing such creative music. "Oh Well" is the first song to have a feedback between a Capella and instrumental music (something I really like but unfortunately not used very often). "Black Dog", which came a few years later, works around the same formula but is way more well known because... Led Zeppelin.

And that's just Part 1 one of the song. While part 1 is just a fun classic rock and roll romp with a coolness level no machine can make a number out of. part 2 is the real beauty. It again backs up my case about Fleetwood Mac being under-appreciated and being labeled as a soft rock band that knew how to make hit songs. Fleetwood Mac is way more than that. Part 2's melody is instantly captivating and has elements of progressive rock and subtle blues while maintaining the band's unique style. Combine parts 1 and 2 and you have an instant masterpiece and 9 minutes that fly by fast (time does fly when you're having fun - in this case your ears are endlessly entertained).

Okay, so what does this song mean to me on a personal level? Well, the song's lyrics, if you pay close attention is what you would guess is about. The protagonist of the song lacks a lot of that would otherwise make a perfect human being, but he just shrugs it all off with a laid-back attitude. And that's exactly what I try to do. If you've seen pictures of me, I'm skinny, nerdy and don't have a specific talent. However I don't think this as a curse and rather try to enjoy with the things I do have. Girls don't like me? Oh well. I can't lift even the lightest dumbbells? Oh well, At least I have MoFo.

That's a great attitude to have. If girls don't like you because your skinny, nerdy, etc., then it's their loss, not yours. The right girl won't care about superficial stuff like that. She'll like you just for being you. :)

ROUND 1 - DAY 6:

Leonard Cohen - Waiting for the Miracle vs. Incubus - Stellar
("Waiting for the Miracle" is a good song, but it becomes a little tiresome by the five minute mark. I've seen honeykid speak fondly of Natural Born Killers, so based on the song's ties with that film, I'll guess him for Cohen. SC has already revealed that Incubus belonged to rauldc.)

Billy Talent - Swallowed Up By The Ocean vs. Bob Seger - Ramblin Gamblin Man
(I can't stand Billy Talent's wimpy voice. Derek is his only fan, so I'm assuming this must be his song. Bob Seger has been around longer than I thought. I didn't realize he was making music in the 60's. I never would've recognized him in that video. Based on cricket's gambling addiction, I'll guess him for "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man.")

Bessie Smith - Gimme a Pig Foot and a Bottle of Beer vs. Mortal Kombat Theme Song
(The Mortal Kombat theme is my nomination. I've kept this secret for all these years, but I once saved Earth from annihilation by winning an ancient fighting tournament against representatives from other realms. You're welcome. I guess my reason for choosing it should be obvious. I've mentioned in other threads that Mortal Kombat was one of my favorite movies growing up. I probably watched it a gazillion times between the ages of 8-12. And as soon as this music started during the opening credits, I would go berserk. Punching and kicking the air, jumping off the couch, doing cartwheels. I'd burn a thousand calories in the span of two minutes. I was also a big fan of the video games. I have a lot of fond memories of shooting a spear out of my palm and telling my cousin to "get over here!" before uppercutting him into a pit of spikes. And that was before the internet was really a thing, so if anyone at school knew how to do any finishing moves, it would become treasured knowledge as everyone would hurry to write down the button combos so they could test them at home. I also had a Mortal Kombat shirt in elementary school that became my "lucky shirt" because something good always happened on days I wore it, whether it was being the last kid standing in dodgeball or having my crush flirt with me. I still love the movie. I still love the games. I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. For me, there's no better work-out song. As soon as I hear this music, I have to resist the urge to revert back to my eight-year-old self and start unleashing kung-fu on invisible baddies. Flawless victory.)

Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well vs. Christina Perri - Human
(That Fleetwood Mac song is f*cking amazing. I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago after it was used in an episode of Fargo. I was surprised that it was a Fleetwood Mac song since I had no clue that there was ever a pre-Stevie Nicks era. I think "Human" might be mistique's nomination.)

Adam Sandler - The Chanukah Song vs. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
(I'm guessing whoever nominated "The Chanukah Song" must be Jewish. Apparently GBG is Jewish according to other people's comments, but I have no clue. After listening to "The Chanukah Song," I proceeded to spend the next thirty minutes listening to old Adam Sandler songs that I hadn't heard in ages, like "Lunch Lady Land" and "Piece of ***** Car." I miss when that guy was funny. "Twilight Zone" is an excellent song. I think I recall cricket nominating this band before, but I guess him too often, so I'll say honeykid instead.)

Madonna - Into the Groove vs. Albinoni's Adagio In G Minor
("Into the Groove" is one of my favorite Madonna songs. Its competition almost put me to sleep. I'll say SilentVamp nominated that.)

Styx - Too Much Time on My Hands vs. The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
(I'm envious of whoever has too much time on their hands. Give me some of it. Musically, the Styx song doesn't sound like something Sci-Fi Slob would nominate, but some of the lyrics made me think of him. "Paint It Black" is one of my favorite songs of all-time and my second favorite Stones song after "Sympathy for the Devil." As someone who wears a lot of black and has a dark worldview, this could've easily been my nomination. Since Gatsby just complained about women issues, I'll guess him for this song.)

Sevendust - Angel's Son vs. Jason Mraz - I Won’t Give Up
(I dislike both of these songs. I'll guess Sane for Sevendust and Tugg for Jason Mraz.)

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Dream vs. Gary Jules - Mad World
(Everybody's been picking Christine for the Bob Dylan track, so I'll jump on the bandwagon. "Mad World" gets nominated a lot in these tournaments. I know Derek is a big fan of the song, so maybe he nominated it again.)

What's the Deal was my song. I think Captain Spaulding (who is incredibly good at this game) guessed it. 28 Days are an Australian rap/punk/metal band who were very popular a while back. That song pretty much sums up Australia in summer. Beer and the beach :) I actually nominated it because I recently spent three weeks in New York and when I got back home I was reminded of something a friend said to me about 25 years ago - regardless of how much you travel or see the world you are always blown away when you fly back into Sydney and see the beaches and the harbour. Our culture is very connected to the sea and summer (and beer) and as I said, no other song deals with that part of our culture better:

The beer is ice cold
And it's sold
From a supermarket that keeps their prices down
This day is not pretentious or fake
Home town Sunday shining
And it takes a day like this to make me understand
That you can't beat the sweet feeling of sand
Between your toes, this is how it goes
Down with a beer in my hand
My best friend's to the left
She's closest to the esky
She passes me a Coopers
And she glistens in the sun

Round 1 - Day 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem
not sure this could be a more clashing matchup... a religious hymn vs an Ebay parody to the tune of Backstreet Boys

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.)

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes

Time to tell, the Theme to Z Cars was mine. Chyp got it by thinking it was a favourite tv series back then, which it was being one of the first more gritty police series. It had a great cast too - Brian Blessed, Frank Windsor, James Ellis, Colin Welland and Stratford Johns as well as hundreds of British character actors over the years it was broadcast.
However the reason it's close to my heart and speaks about me is that my beloved Everton F.C. have run out onto the pitch at Goodison Park to the Z Cars theme for around 50 years. HK knew that of course. Just hearing it gives me goosepimples. To explain to non Brits, my home town of Liverpool has two football teams - Everton and Everton Reserves...sorry, it's an old joke - actually there's two Premier League football teams in Liverpool: Everton (who play in blue) and Liverpool (red). When you're born, you're born into a Blue family or a Red one. You can't really change as you'll always be a kind of family outcast, a committer of treason. When you meet a new person it's pretty much one of the first things you'll find out about them, it's that deep rooted.
When I was younger and living at home, my dad used to go to the match with his mates, my brother, the middle kid, would go with his mates and I used to take my younger brother cos I had to take him to the part of the ground that wouldn't be so crowded - this was in the days of standing up at the match. he would've only been 7 or so when we started going on our own. We had to get a place by the crash barriers for him to sit on so he could see. I look back on those days with great fondness.
Back then in the city we had a football newspaper called the Football Echo. We'd get back home from the match and an hour or so later the Footy Echo would get to the shops. We'd run over and get it and when my dad came back from having the obligatory pint, me and my brothers would argue about the match and what went on that afternoon.
It's specially poignant for me when I look back on those days as my middle brother died very young, and my dad's no longer here either, and thinking about those times makes me smile. Me and my younger brother still keep the faith though, and both of my sons are Evertonians. His little daughters are too. I went back recently and watched Everton v Liverpool with my own son and hearing Z Cars playing made my eyes well up.
Good times :)

Here's a wobbly video, but I thought it illustrated things from a fan's view

'Fess up time for me again - getting doubtful that any of mine will make it to round 2 at this stage :(

Deutsch-Österreichisches Feingefühl - Codo (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_lI9iPo2gO4)

was mine.

When I was just out of my teens I was lucky enough to get sent by my company over to Germany to live and work as part of an international team building the Norwegian digital telephone exchange. It was quite an adventure for someone who had (a) never flown before and (b) only knew how to count from 1 to 100 and say basic pleasantries in the language and I wanted something to represent that wonderful phase in my life. Codo had actually been a big European hit the year before but was still a favourite in the clubs so I got to hear it plenty of times and grew to appreciate not only it but the German sense of humour and way of life in general.

I thought some people would probably label it as an HK selection from his love of Eurovision and I deliberately didn't give the full name of the band as I thought that might point to my OCD which I know I've mentioned in the past.

I bet you had a great time Chyp! Hope you're clubbing days aren't over yet ;)

The weirdest thing that happens with my sense of direction is on road trips. I can be driving down a long road, pull into a restaurant/shop....then when I come back out and drive out of the parking light onto the main road and have to take either a left or right, I always chose wrong...and so try to turn in the direction that I had just came from. Which would make for a short trip;) I don't know why that happens?

Go at whatever pace suits you Gbg (as long as it's more than one set per annum or the like). Hope you are beginning to feel a little better.

Yes, I'm starting to feel a little better. Thanks.

Believe it or not, the thing that's bugging me the most today is that I bought a bunch of these for 75% off after Halloween, and I can't eat them until my throat gets better. I had them last year after Halloween, and they were delicious. :)

Glad you are on the road to recovery Gbg.
I'm sure those are lovelier than they look or sound but I do have to side with cricket on them ;)

I agree that they don't look appetizing, but they taste much better than they look. Think about it. Wouldn't they have to be great for ME to buy something called "Zombie Food" that looks like body parts?

ROUND 1 - DAY 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine

Well this wasn't the song I expected to hear when I clicked on the link. (I thought maybe Merle Haggard recorded a cover version of Neil Diamond's song "Red Red Wine", and I was looking forward to hearing it.) Even though it's country music, it's not my nomination. Maybe Christine's? She seems to like some older country music.

Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better

This sounds like something Cricket or Honeykid might nominate, based on the lyrics.

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song

I think I remember Gatsby saying that he liked funny songs, so this could be his nomination.

Scorpions - Winds of Change

I'm not sure why, but this sounds like maybe something Sane might have nominated?

The Beatles - Penny Lane

SilentVamp is a big fan of The Beatles, so I'll guess that this is her nomination.

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise

Maybe someone here really loves cheeseburgers?

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star

This sounds like it could be something SilentVamp or Christine might nominate.

Laverne and Lenny - The Look

Another "Laverne & Shirley" song, so this must be another Citizen Rules nomination.

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good

If I remember correctly, Derek's a big fan of Nickelback, so Derek seems like a safe guess for this song.

Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song

Chypmunk mentioned something about his sporting history when talking about this song tournament in his "Top of the Pops" thread (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=1410438#post1410438), so I'll guess Chypmunk's sports history includes bowling and this is his nomination.

ROUND 1 - DAY 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better

Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem - Like many/most, I've got gbg and SFS here.

Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change

Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.) - If it's not SV then more Liverpool days might be Christine.

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes - I think nostromo gave us this one. :D

Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun

Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow - Three L&S songs, CR?

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song - Obviously Derek is the choice here.

I'll do Day 8 later. I should be up quite late tonight.

ROUND 1 - DAY 7:

Merle Haggard - Red Red Wine vs. Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better
Country song usually nominated by either GBG or CR. but I don't think is fond of wine so I'll go with CR. I'm guessing christine for one of the best James Bond theme songs.
Weird Al Yankovic - The eBay Song vs. Jerusalem
It's true that I am a huge fan of Weird Al Yankovic and I use eBay to buy a lot of stuff (Sexy is wrong about using it to get American junk food - my friends smuggles them in instead :D). Jerusalem, like everyone predicted before me, is GS or SFS being his sarcastic self but since GS said his nominations were going to be obvious I choose GS.
Culture Club - I'll Tumble 4 Ya vs. Scorpions - Winds of Change
Despite my taste being geared toward hard rock and grunge I have a huge soft spot for Culture Club. Unfortunately I don't have on for the Scorpions.
Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room vs. The Beatles - Penny Lane (Alternate Link for U.S.)

Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise vs. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
GBG must have nominated that Jimmy Buffett song since she's not a fan of veggies and would most likely choose a cheeseburger over them.
Shakira - Hips Don't Lie vs. Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes
I know the first one is Nostro's song (not sure though), and the other song has a strong HK vibe to it.
Bing Crosby - Swinging On A Star vs. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
SFS for the first one and Derek for the second? Idk.
Laverne and Lenny - The Look vs. Stereophonics - Maybe Tomorrow

Nickelback - Feelin' Way Too Damn Good vs. Joe Montgomery - Bowling Song

After doing my part to help GBG get this tournament up and running I had hoped to take part in the voting but I've not had the chance. Over the last week though I have, as promised, cobbled together a list of songs that I could have submitted. As I said previously, music isn't something I've often gotten greatly passionate about. However after a great deal of thought I was actually able to come up with a bunch of songs. I just thought about different periods and events in my life and thought about the songs that were around at the time.

And the fact that this wasn't an official submission meant I didn't need to restrict myself to just 8 songs. :D So here you go -

1. This is the first song I remember hearing on the radio and really loving. I remember my sister buying me it for Christmas actually. Now there was other stuff before that I liked. For example back in the day I really liked The Spice Girls but most of that was from TV exposure. And I may also have owned a copy of the Mr Blobby song.

This was the first time I'd heard this song in many years and I still rather like it actually. Oh and surely someone must have made an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind music video using this song. It's pretty much perfect

The Cardigans - "Erase and Rewind" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mkv_2fQ-OLU)

2. Back in the late 90s my best friend moved away to Australia which left me really gutted. In the months leading up to his departure we spent lots of time together and when I think about that time the song is there in the background. I can't remember if one of us (or both of us) really loved it or if it was just really popular and seemed to always been on the radio but I imagine it was just there all the time. Oh and hearing it in Iron Man 3 of all things was a great surprise and treat

Eiffel 65 - "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=68ugkg9RePc)

3. As I said I've rarely gotten hugely invested with music. The most I've ever been enamoured with an album was with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By the Way". After buying it I just listened to it over and over for weeks/months. I don't know what it was about that particular album that got to me so but it just did. There are loads of songs I could have gone with (Zephyr Song, Universally Speaking, On Mercury, Can't Stop, Dosed, Don't Forget Me etc) but I've just stuck with the title song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "By the Way" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JnfyjwChuNU)

4. I'm an extremely proud Scot so I felt I had to include a song of a Scottish bent to represent that. There are a few I could have gone with but two that jump out at the moment are the anthemic "Loch Lomond" by Runrig and this little folk song I'm kind of obsessed with for the moment

Runrig - "Loch Lomond" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ7f0HUk8OU)

Claire Hastings - "Let Ramensky Go" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tTKMMh9Xk8Q)

5. For some people it will be Darth Vader's Imperial March, the duh-duh of Jaws or perhaps something from Braveheart or Gladiator. For me personally the most evocative piece of movie music is this slice of Hobbit heaven. It's just a delightful piece that perfectly captures the spirit of hobbits and their home of the Shire. Whenever I hear it I can't help but smile.

Now when I first saw the Fellowship of the Ring it was just about the closest I've ever had to a religious experience as far as cinema is concerned. And when I watched the first Hobbit film, when this tune was reprised I found myself instantly transported back to that cinema in 2001 and I was once again a 14 year old boy about to embark on this incredible adventure. It was magical.

Concerning Hobbits (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SRgBI0WqWp4)

6. Another of those rare instances where I've experienced great passion for a bit of music. I've cried plenty of times at films and TV shows but I think the first time I heard this was the only time I've ever cried at a song. It's just such a raw, visceral song and when combined with the video it's just heart-wrenching. What also made it so powerful to me was the fact that I don't think I heard/saw this until after his death. It was the news of his death that really turned me on to his music and I came to love the guy.

Johnny Cash - "Hurt" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vt1Pwfnh5pc)

7. Back when I was like 14/15 I was in a really bad place. After years of struggling I had left school because I could just no longer face it and I was suffering very badly with depression. I was shut off from the world and really struggling. It was at this point that I also discovered the music of Nirvana. It's definitely the most I've ever identified with music. In my dark, angsty place it felt like music made just for me. And while it may only have been a small part I do believe it helped to get me through.

There are many of their songs I could have gone with but I've plumped for "Come As You Are." While it may not necessarily be the case, at the time I took the song to be about accepting people no matter their flaws. As someone who was feeling like a real freak and an outcast at the time it was an appealing sentiment.

Nirvana - "Come As You Are" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vabnZ9-ex7o)

8. May 23rd, 2010 was the worst day of my life. On that day my beloved little dog Lucky passed away. Now I know that for everyone who has ever owned a dog they will likely have meant a great deal to you. But I think that given my circumstances he probably meant more to me than normal. During that time I was talking about in the Nirvana write-up he's what really kept me going. It was his companionship and the fact that he gave me a reason to get up in the morning. Without him I'm really not sure I'd still be here right now.

So when I lost him it just destroyed me. I spiralled into a really dark place. Luckily for me my mum had a bunch of jobs around the house and garden she'd been planning on getting done at some point which I took over. So for weeks on end, maybe even a month or two, I got up early every day and got to work; painting several rooms, painting the fence and railings in the garden, digging up and ripping out loads of trees and planets etc. Had it not been for all that to preoccupy me I once again may have considered drastic action to end my suffering. That distraction was vital. And while I was doing all this work I had my ipod as my constant companion. Not long before this I had seen and fallen in love with the film, 500 Days of Summer. I also adored its soundtrack so I was listening to that (and by extension The Smiths) a hell of a lot at the time. To represent that I could pick a bunch of songs (Regina Spektor - "Us" and "Hero", Black Lips - "Bad Kids", Meagan Smith - "Here Comes Your Man", Temper Trap - "Sweet Disposition" and a whole mass of Smiths songs) but I've plumped for this one.

The Smiths - "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DRtW1MAZ32M)

9. Back when Eminem first came to prominence I was like 12 or 13 years old; pretty much the perfect age to buy into and love him as this cool and edgy guy. I loved many of his songs, and in particular just adored "Stan". While many of the songs that I loved back then don't really do much for me anymore, I still believe that "Stan" is a terrific song. I think it's wonderfully clever, almost to the point of genius, and in conjunction with the music video it's just a great bit of storytelling.

Eminem - "Stan" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aSLZFdqwh7E)

10. I've thrown this one in as it's by far the song that I've sung the most during my life. When it comes to football (that's soccer for you Yankees) I'm a Rangers fan. And this song is one of the club's anthems that is sung before the start of every game. I was a season ticket holder for a number of years so I'll have sang along to this dozens and dozens of times, perhaps even into the hundreds.

Tina Turner - "Simply the Best" (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aIrCFrFpHvw)

11. Yet another song that ties into my tough times at around 14/15. It was at that age that I saw Donnie Darko for the first time. And while my experience of time travel and giant rabbits has been somewhat limited, I was able to feel a connection to the film in other ways. Through the character of Donnie it again spoke to the angsty, depressed loner that I had become. So I had already formed this connection to the film and then this song came on at the end and just knocked me for six. I can't even really say why it had such an impact but it really did. It's just so sad and haunting but also beautiful. It remains perhaps my favourite use of a song in any film I've ever seen. I also remember being part of the movement to get this song to the no.1 spot for Christmas. There were people so desperate for it not to get no.1 because it was "depressing" and "not Christmassy". And then there were people desperate to stop a Simon Cowell reality show from churning out another no.1

Gary Jules - "Mad World (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4)

If I'd kept going to include TV shows and the like that have been favourites I could have included the theme songs for the X-Files and the 1980s Ninja Turtles cartoon

Somehow this one seemed to slip under the radar for some of you, but Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away" was my nomination. This is my "go-to-song" when I'm having a bad day. Anytime I get stressed out, I sit back, close my eyes, and listen to this song.

It's on a CD that stays in my CD player, it's on my computer, it's on my mp3 player, it's on my cell phone, and I even have the YouTube video link in my bookmarks. I listen to it several times every week, and sometimes, several times a day if I'm having a very bad day.

Lady, you need to chill out like it's going out of style. Take that depressing CD out of the CD player. Get it off your cell phone and delete that link from your bookmarks. That cannot be psychologically healthy to always hear "Make the World Go Away."
