Welcome to the Slasher Hall of Fame.
I haven't been able to gather a massive following for this hall of fame, but you know, that's alright with me. I think the enthusiasm of the members we do have will make up for the lack of numbers, and while we only number six strong at the moment, I expect we might be able to pick up a couple stragglers along the way. I'd accept up to six more people, so join or die!
Now for the already committed members, go ahead and send me your nominations. I'm ready to get this show on the road.
For what is acceptable for nominations, I won't make the rules for what a slasher is. Each person might have their own definition, and I'll allow you to make your own distinction. Just use some sense when nominating, don't get crazy on us.
The one thing that you can't nominate is Psycho. Not because I don't think it belongs in a slasher hall of fame, but because it is already in our hall of fame. It won the very first one.
Nominees:
Alice Sweet Alice (Alfred Sole, 1976) Nominated by

Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978) Nominated by Swan
http://www.panorama-cinema.com/V2/images/critique/critique607/affiche1.jpg
When I was thinking about what I would nominate, I was trying to decide if I should nominate Halloween - the quintessential and best slasher film to date - or go with something lesser-known. But when I pictured myself nominating something else, I felt like I was being a bit... blasphemous. Not only to the slasher genre, not only because it defines a slasher in every inkling of its being, but because it is one of those films that defines me, as a person. It has been there for my enjoyment for most of my life and has inspired me in many, many ways. It has influenced much of what I seek in cinema - effective simplicity, visceral horror, intelligence, passion, and overall, a good time. So it's a very personal nomination. On top of that, though, I simply think it deserves to win the first, maybe only, slasher hall of fame.
Christmas Evil (Lewis Jackson, 1980) Nominated by jiraffejustin
http://i.imgur.com/ZgOLP57.jpg
Okay, so hear me out. This is like an art-slasher or something. It's by far the most surreal slasher I've ever seen, and I think it's a misunderstood movie that really needs to be reexamined by cinephiles. John Waters is the biggest fan of the movie, in terms of fame x vocal support. He calls it the greatest Christmas movie of all-time. I don't really know what to say, it's a bizarre movie. I hope everybody will at least appreciate it on some level, because there's nothing else like it.
But most importantly, the main character looks like a combination of Bill Murray and Tommy Lee Jones.
Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma, 1980) Nominated by BlueLion
http://image.cine21.com/resize/cine21/poster/2005/0628/M0010063_pos[S600,600].jpg

I decided to go with a prototypical slasher from when I consider to be the golden age for these movies. It stars that era's scream queen and my all time favorite butterface, Jamie Lee Curtis. I think it's a movie that fits in perfectly with this Hall of Fame, and I think everyone will enjoy it.
Happy Birthday to Me (J. Lee Thompson, 1981) Nominated by honeykid

Personally it doesn't look like a slasher to me, but I won't decide for you what you consider a slasher.
I think this is a good idea, because it'd be too hard to really nail down what exactly is a slasher. I personally just ask everyone that they nominate something that they genuinely consider a slasher, and not take advantage of this leniency.

Really? So, what did he nominate? Are you sharing this info early? I may accept your invitation, but I hope these aren't unbelievable amounts of gore. I hate movies like Saw, Hostile, etc . . . Zombies are fine, Jason Vorhees, and my one true love Michael Myers. The true Myers. Not that Rob Zombie crap.
I don't know, you may not want me in here now. :p
If Tucker & Dale vs Evil is a slasher than I'll join and nominate that. If not then the only other thing I would nominate would be Jason X but everyone hates that except me and Honeykid.

I'm letting everybody decide what they consider a slasher. I've never seen Jason X, but kind of want to anyway. Such a unique idea for a slasher, I've heard the execution isn't great, but I like the diversity it would present. That's up to you though.

I'm not sure Wishmaster counts, to tell you the truth. I am trying to think of everything this guy does. He does horrible things to that one man, but a flat out slasher, I dunno. He drives through a truck, sets that girl up to be blown away . . .
Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

That's probably because "slasher movies" is more specific than just "sci-fi movies". The Sci-Fi HoF is equivalent to a "horror" HoF, where anything even remotely considered horror would be eligible. (The Sci-Fi HoF already has a horror movie, and two foreign language movies that were nominated.)
This HoF is more like if the Sci-Fi HoF was something specific, like "space travel movies", "alien invasion movies", or "time travel movies".

Anybody else who is participating, could you please PM me your nomination instead of announcing it in the thread? :p

I only own 24 of those. Not that I would want even half, but there are a very few I should still get. I forgot all about my Road Games, Prom Night, Terror Train, and When a Stranger Calls. Also, all the sequels to my favorites.
Great idea on Jeepers Creepers.
You are very accurate, Goodies. That is exactly why I am not into the Sci-fi Hall of Fame anymore. I need to go see what else has been added since earlier today.
Sorry Justin! Do I still need to PM it to you?
My film KICK ASS!
I need help finding this film. I have never seen a movie named Kick Ass, and the only one I can find is an action comedy about super heroes.
Anyway, so far there will be nine films to watch. I remember four of the six turned in. I damn well know I am staying in on this one. I can't wait to see the rest of the list. This has been a great idea, Justin dear.

Sent my nom in.
Some movies I considered nominating, and why I chose not to-
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
This is actually a terrific movie that I think would've been a great nomination. I just wanted to go for something a little more classic.
April Fool's Day (1986)
I love this movie, but I think most members have probably seen it.
Last House on the Left (1972)
A big favorite of mine; I just don't personally consider it to be a slasher.
The New Kids (1985)
I would've loved to have nominated this because I don't think many have seen it. I saw it on some slasher lists, but like the one above, I don't consider it slasher.*
Pieces (1982)
This is a very good cult slasher, but it may have been hard to find and it's not made especially well.
Bad Dreams (1988)
I love it, but I'm not confident it would've done well.
Hell Night (1981)
This is a real good one, but I don't remember it well enough.
Pieces is goofy fun.

I would strongly recommend The New Kids, it's from the director of Friday the 13th and is great 80's fun. The only thing is that I don't consider it a true horror movie.
How many of these have you guys seen? My percentage of films seen on that list is embarrassingly low

I thought about My Bloody Valentine.. its probably my favorite slasher... I have the dvd and was going to watch it recently.. but didnt (someone ruined my night). I dont watch it often but I do remember some of the killings being a bit of a shock... they happen when you least expect it..
I picked "Hatchet" because of its 80's feel.... I seen many of the 80's slashers when I was younger but to rewatch them... well ... they arent my favorite.. I prefer late 60's and 70's horror...

You're a woman without many limits, especially when it comes to movies, and you picked Hatchet as your selection?! It's one of the worst movies in the world.
Its a throwback to the 80's slasher genre.... with some fun killings.. It has Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger fame), Kane Hodder ("Jason" from Friday the 13th) and Tony Todd (Candyman).
Which doesn't make it good.
I bought Hatchet when it first came out just to try something new. Big mistake! I thought it was incredibly stupid.
But what I really hate about Hatchet was there was a lot of press about it that seemed to be calling it "a new slasher classic" and basically because all of those famous horror movie actors were in it.
They kept saying it was like a throwback to an '80s horror movie -- I didn't get what they were talking about. It was gimmicky and nothing special at all. It was like one of those "celebrities for doing nothing" -- famous, noticed, but WHAT FOR? I despise Hatchet. I haven't seen it in years, but I know it's still crap. OMG, MovieGal, I'm never trusting your opinion again since you picked Hatchet. What were you thinking?! You're supposed to gross people out, not bore them!

First half of the nominations:

I decided to go with a prototypical slasher from when I consider to be the golden age for these movies. It stars that era's scream queen and my all time favorite butterface, Jamie Lee Curtis. I think it's a movie that fits in perfectly with this Hall of Fame, and I think everyone will enjoy it.

I was a little worried about getting this thing off the ground, at first we only had a handful of members. I knew all of those members were good for this kind of theme, but I am very pleased about the late additions. I am very much looking forward to this hall of fame, because it's probably going to be the most unique one.
Alice Sweet Alice - Haven't seen, but I've heard nothing but good things from people I trust. Looking forward to it.
Halloween - It will be a major upset if something were to knock this off. But unlike the horror hof where I was rooting for the underdog, I'd be very pleased to see Halloween in our hall of fame.
Christmas Evil - My nomination, so obviously it's great. I saw this recently and was blown away. It's a really fantastic and unique movie, hopefully you guys will appreciate it.
Dressed to Kill - De Palma is a stylish director, but I prefer some of his other films to this one. I did enjoy it though, and I look forward to revisiting it.
Terror Train - A slasher...on a train? Count me in. Can't wait for this one.
Happy Birthday to Me - You shouldn't judge a movie by it's poster, but if you did, honeykid's nom would easily win.
Silent Night, Deadly Night - Any movie that pisses off the moms of America will be one that I am eager to see.
Jason X - I think I've seen this one. I don't remember though, I know I've seen a handful of the kills. Another one I am excited for.
Jeepers Creepers - I saw this one when I was younger, it's probably the one I am least excited for. But I will approach with an open mind.
Hatchet - I didn't really care for it when I first saw it. Maybe it will grow on me this time? I don't know, I am weird when it comes to over-the-top splatter comedies. I love Dead Alive, but I don't like The Evil Dead. So let's see what happens.
OK, out of the first five nominated, I own four of them. I will buy Christmas Evil. I have honestly never heard of it, but I am totally fine with giving it a try. :) I'm really loving this thread, guys. You all are a lot of fun. I didn't say a word about my film, but there is actually a story behind my choosing it. I will send it to Justin later, and he can add it to the post. No worries, it's not long.
Swan, I love what you said about Halloween. I have a tiny story to tell there too, but that can be it's own post later. Maybe even in the Movie chat that happens later.

I've never thought of Dressed to Kill as a horror movie, yet it seems to fit the criteria of a slasher very well.
That's because it's not. It's far from being a horror film, but I deliberately went for something more offbeat. I think the slasher elements are definitely there like you said, even if in the traditional sense it isn't one.
I'm really looking forward to this, some very interesting choices and most of these I've heard of. Should be fun for sure.

There's some good stuff here. I've yet to watch Hatchet or Jeepers Creepers. I'm pretty sure I have Hatchet. Jeepers Creepers always seemed to be on TV over here, but now that I want to see it, it probably won't be. :D I think I've watched about the first 20 minutes, but I wasn't really paying attention so I deleted it.
I've seen all the others and I think I have them all, too, so I might give one of two of them a rewatch. Especially Christmas Evil, which I've only seen once.
Like Swan I was torn between classic and/or great or slightly less seen/unusual. In the end I went for the first one, though I don't think it's as seen as it should be.
As no one nominated it, please watch The House On Sorority Row if you get the chance. The original, of course, not the remake. TBH, if I didn't like Happy Birthday To Me so much I'm sure that would've been my pick.

Alice Sweet Alice: Really interest me! On my watchlist since forever can't wait to see it.
Halloween: One of my favorite movie of all-time with one of my favorite vilain of all-time... Michael Myers is a beast and it probably gonna win.
Christmas Evil: Seems very good and exactly my kind of flick.
Dressed To Kill: I only like one flick of Brian De Palma and it's Blow Out but Dressed To Kill look very nice.
Terror Train: A stabber on a train? count me in.
Happy Birthday To Me: Looks like a whole fun flick. I'm excited for it.
Silent Night, Deadly Night: On my watchlist since forever and cannot wait to see it.
Jason X: Whole fun flick with one of my favorite vilain of horror. Cannot wait to rewatch it once again :).
Jeepers Creepers: My nomination and I completely love it every time I watch it. The Creeper is great.
Hatchet: On my watchlist since forever. Cannot wait to watch it and very excited for it.
Brief, it's going to be great
Out of the last five nominated, again I own four of the five. I haven't watched Jason X yet, and up until this thread started, not only had I not watched Silent Night, Deadly Night, but I didn't even own it. I found it rather cheap on Amazon last night. i'm just looking forward to what kind of discussion we're gonna get in comparing these
which slash villain has the best fashion sense?
which villain has the most absurdly entertaining kill sequences?
which villain has the highest body count?
crucial components, indeed
part of me is bummed that i didn't nominate an Elm St movie, might have been fun to cover Freddy's Revenge (1985) actually. That one gets a lot of crap yet i've found myself liking it over time. While it does have humor, it's also the last glimpse at Freddy as a more sinister type slasher lead before he went full jokester in the later sequels with tons of one-liners. Nevermind that tho, Elm St is a no-show in the first Hall of Fame

I had four other slashers in mind to nominate before I settled on Christmas Evil:
Peeping Tom - The proto-slasher, but very much a slasher in my eyes. One of the first, one of the best. A fantastic movie that crowds were not ready for at all, which ruined Michael Powell's career.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - Just a classic horror film that's genuinely scary.
The Prowler - Tom Savini magic at work. Just a stand-out slasher that follows slasher rules.
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors - I've never been the biggest fan of this series, but I love this movie. Freddy is at his funniest and the movie is an R-rated live-action cartoon in a very good way. Bonus:

I think if I had joined this, I would have nominated TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. The original, of course. That's what I was leaning toward.
Derek Vinyard mentioned SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE and that's another I considered. SCREAM 2 was another. All my favorites. SCREAM 2 would probably get trashed for being a sequel -- though I read that George Romero prefers it over SCREAM 1, so I am not alone.
I probably would have just quit this, though. Most of these movies nominated are stupid stuff I know about and avoided. Nothing really to be excited about checking out.

well, i almost made a 'cutesy' choice, by hiding away what's become my favorite movie. Now i want to unleash it. Whether it wins or not isn't what's as important to me. Yoda created a website where we can come and talk about our love for films. The Slash Vault has been building for some time, and i wonder if anyone got curious if it was leading to anything. I had a vision for it when it started, which i am going to shift here. These movies operate on different levels. The first level is what's on the surface. Fun-scary atmosphere, body counts, masked monsters, the next major step in the evolution of horror film villains since Dracula, Frankenstein, & the Wolf Man. To get into my vision is to discuss this ↓
http://oi62.tinypic.com/211q6hk.jpg
These three horror icons punish sins, and are practically immortal. These are God-like qualities. That's why these three are the rock stars of slasher villains. Especially Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, i've considered Jason the lesser of the three in this regard
The role of sin punisher is especially apparent in Nightmare on Elm St, which Wes Craven rooted in Catholic religion as that is how he was raised. The sins of the father visited upon the children. That's what Elm St is all about. Freddy Krueger was a filthy child murderer in life who got off the hook on a legal technicality, an incorrect search warrant. So the parents of Elm Street took their revenge by burning Freddy alive, burning his house down. The parents of Elm St took the law into their own hands, and Freddy's reign of dream terror are the sins of the parents visited upon the Elm Street children. That is the framework, the story operates on multiple levels, and that is what i love most about storytelling. Add in the supernatural dream-vibe, and this is a film that maximizes everything that film is about, for me. What the hell are dreams, anyway? Where do they come from?
Sexy Celebrity
04-26-15, 03:23 AM
To me, Freddy Krueger feels like the most superior of the Freddy/Jason/Michael triad. Unlike Jason and Michael, Freddy actually talks, and his film franchise was probably the most successful considering all the different areas. The Nightmare movies were considered huge hits, there was Freddy mania, Freddy merchandise was everywhere, HE HAD A TV SHOW (in the '80s), etc. etc. The movies got better reviews than the Friday the 13th and Halloween sequels.
What also makes Freddy so precious is Robert Englund's performance. In my opinion, nobody can truly replace Robert Englund. Jason and Michael can be played by anybody, but when Robert Englund was replaced with Jackie Earle Haley, it was just NOT THE SAME. Even though I think that remake made a lot of money... where's the sequels? Freddy hasn't been seen since. It's just not the same without Robert Englund. So, all of the Robert Englund stuff is truly very precious.
With that said, though, ultimately, Jason and Michael could live longer than Freddy because of that, since anybody could play them. But Freddy could still stick around.
Jason Voorhees is second place. There's a hell of a lot of Friday the 13th movies and I think he (as well as Freddy) are just more well known than Michael Myers.
Michael Myers is third and last place. Halloween was critically successful... but the sequels weren't really up there with the Freddy and Jason movies. Jason movies were seen as the lowest of the low, yet, there was a new one every year. Michael Myers' appearances were more random and sketchy. He didn't even appear in Halloween III. There were big spaces between Michael Myers movies, except for Halloween 4 & 5, which were 1988 and 1989. Michael Myers is big, but I dunno... I feel like more people know Freddy and Jason than they do Michael.
Leatherface is fourth with me... and after that, maybe Pinhead. That's the big five with me. Pinhead is the absolute worst with his movies considering everything, but I feel like Pinhead is such a strong horror figure in league with the rest of these titans. After that, you get into Ghostface from Scream and Jigsaw from Saw, representing the '90s and the 00's. I don't know who the titan of the 10's is, if there's even one. It's probably over. Nobody looks significant to me. There's a bunch of stupid horror movies coming out all the time, but nothing's standing out, as far as I see.
In fact, I hear more about Jason than anyone now. If Freddy is the boogeyman of the subconscious realm, Jason is the boogeyman of the conscious one. Freddy is the monster that lives inside of you. Jason is the monster that lives outside of you, in the real world. Freddy is the creepy man you see in your dreams, Jason is the creepy man you see when you wake up.
Michael Myers is YOU as the monster. This is why multiple people turn evil in the Halloween series -- from little Jamie to the kid and the cult members in Halloween 6 -- even Michael himself. These are people who suddenly BECOME evil. If Freddy lives inside of you and Jason lives outside of you, Michael IS you. You see his point of view when he kills -- YOUR point of view. Michael is what happens when you suddenly snap and kill somebody. You go beyond being human and become EVIL.
Leatherface is the world as the monster. He is the world out there that is not safe, that wants to get you and will turn you into a product to be sold if it wants to, such as Leatherface's family killing and cooking people and selling them as chili. Leatherface and his family are a big business. They are coming to get you for their own needs. They want to catch you, kill you, cook you and sell you. You are a product for them.
Pinhead is the monster of the underworld. The monster beyond this world, what we don't see. The monster of the afterlife. If any of the above killers get you and kill you, you may end up meeting Pinhead in his underworld who will only kill you some more.
Ghostface is the monster of the movies. He is all of the above that we've seen, but now hiding behind a new mask. He is the monster of the monsters. Take off his mask and it could be any one of them hiding behind it. He is the monster we already know and are familiar with -- or we think we do, anyway.
Jigsaw is the monster of your life. He has your life in his hands. He is, in a way, the God of the monsters, because he plays God with everyone. If Pinhead is Satan, Jigsaw is God. Both have something to do with puzzles. You think you've figured the game out... but Jigsaw pulls the rug out from under you and shows that you had NOTHING figured out. Jigsaw is in control of everything. Note how moralistic he is, too -- he traps people who don't appreciate THEIR LIFE.

I think it's fitting that God (Jigsaw) was the last monster to show up because it seems to me that in recent years, God has truly taken a backseat and is now constantly being seen as a monster. Religion is a monster, is evil, etc. etc. Religion is something that everyone seems to hate now.
Jigsaw is a representation of that. We have reached the point where God is now the monster. It's no longer about seeing the world or seeing yourself or other people as monsters... GOD is the ultimate monster now. Jigsaw is God. He appears to be the final monster because as I've said, I see no other monsters that are so well known from modern horror films.
At some point, I'd still like to get around to Silent Night, Deadly Night, the whole backlash it caused is really funny to me.
OK, I think it was Swan who asked me to run the next Horror Hall of Fame. I ran like hell from it, but now that I see how much more fun these specific Hall of Fame threads are, I am already working on one. I won't say what my idea is just yet, but you will more than likely get to nominate that movie.
A slasher HoF should have representation from Michael, Jason, and Freddy, and now it does.
Yes, but Jason would have a hell of a better chance to win if it were the second film.
I like how Sexy says people are talking about horror way too much on this forum, then he comes in this thread and annoyingly disses Halloween and then writes a godd*mn horror essay.

HALLOWEEN is a good movie, but no matter how "well shot" it is, or how "technically genius" it is... it's ultimately a stupid slasher movie about some psycho who kills a couple of girls on Halloween night.
I feel like, overall, it's a boring gimmick. Thus why it had lame sequels.
Freddy Krueger and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET was an advancement in horror. HALLOWEEN was basically a repeat of PSYCHO. NIGHTMARE was something else. That something else was the fact that it had an undead killer who haunts people's dreams and can kill them for real there. That is an advancement, and a good one. To me, it's like the invention of vampires -- the creation of Dracula. Michael Myers is just kinda plain in comparison. He's bland and pale, just like his plain clothes and all white mask. Michael Myers is a goth.
Freddy was something else -- and I just find the movie so much more entertaining. It also doesn't have that mannish Jamie Lee Curtis in it, which is a big positive.

Like you cricket, I was caught up with Freddy as a teenager. I can still remember seeing a clip from the film on Film '85, I think it was, and then about 6 months later a friend telling me that she'd been in the video shop and they had that film I wanted to see. I didn't believe her because, back then, it took a good year or so before films found themselves for rental. But I went down there and she was right. I convinced her dad that he must see it (because we must see it) and we all watched it that night. Loved. Every. Minute. Of. It. I can still remember being sat her their living room floor as Tina's body hits the bed and the blood splatters everywhere.
Nightmare 2 I still remember first being aware of when watching Film '86 in my bedroom. It was the clip with the budgie flying around the house. :D Barry was not impressed, but I was thrilled. OK, so it wasn't as good when I saw it, but I still really liked it.
By Dream Warriors Freddy started to get big. I think I was the first kid at school to see it, which I discovered had a bit of a cache with a few of the older lads and a Freddy poster was on the back of my door by the end of the year. I remember watching it for the first time and the cat, which was sat on my lap, decided to dig her claws in. Yep! Scared the crap out of me. :D Cat shot off and didn't come back for the rest of the night.

If Honeykid was a teenage Freddy fan, I was a child Freddy fan. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STEEET was my childhood. Majorly.
My parents didn't care about what movies I watched. They taped the NIGHTMARE movies off of premium movie channels like HBO and I saw them. Eventually, I got actual store bought copies on VHS.
I can remember seeing a poster for NIGHTMARE 3 outside a theater in 1987 or so. I watched an MTV special celebrating NIGHTMARE 4 right before it came out. I went to the video store with my grandparents to rent 4 and I watched it at their place because I was staying there for the weekend. My aunt came by later and copied it for me. Saw NIGHTMARE 5 and every movie after that in a movie theater. I had all kinds of merchandise - which I don't really have anymore, unfortunately.
Even though I was younger than HK, I understand his experiences. They were my earliest ones. I didn't care about typical kids stuff -- I cared about horror films. I cared about Freddy. I got to meet him one time. My childhood was Freddy Krueger.

To me, that's why Halloween was so effective. You didn't need all the frills. All the wisecracks. You want terror? How about facing a terminator, a real terminator, not one with an accent or one-liners. I don't give a damn about sequels. There's only one movie that had Michael Myers in it, one that matters anyway. With a no-nonsense, no frills killer. Stalking. Taking his time. Playing fair. He didn't need to trap people in their dreams. He would do it the hard way. Take his time. Hunt you down. And kill you. You weren't trapped. You could run. You could hide. The thing is, Michael had an endless motor. That's what scares me. Trying to escape from a killer that has ceaseless determination. And there's all that technical stuff you don't seem to care about too :p

I feel like people are romanticizing Michael Myers here -- meaning, they're giving him much more credit than he's worth.
Michael Myers is certainly notable and scary, but in that first Halloween movie, I am not incredibly impressed by him. I don't really feel like the man has an endless motor. Especially when you consider the fact that he just sat in a room for 15 years, silent and motionless -- this is just a stupid plot device, in a way, so the kid could grow up and kill as an adult. I don't find all that sitting very motor-like.... I also find him less scary because we saw him as a kid. I think there's kind of a level of sympathy there. He's kind of like a child. Jason is the same way -- both of them had profound events that shaped them as children. But while Jason went through a major trauma and is out for revenge, Michael had no reason for what he did. He might as well be a murderous baby. I think this is why Halloween got exploited by Rob Zombie -- he found something he could sell to goth kids. Something childish, immature, something that ultimately didn't have much depth.
Michael is no more a terminator than Freddy and Jason. As you mentioned, Michael has a habit of waiting. Freddy and Jason DON'T WAIT. That's why they're scarier. What kind of zombies would you rather deal with? Zombies that walk slow... or zombies that run? Michael Myers is a zombie that walks slow. Freddy and Jason run. Jason is absolutely a terminator. I think he's the ultimate terminator of the horror genre. That man kills dozens of people in one movie, while Michael may only kill 3 or 4. Someone turns around in a Jason movie and they're suddenly faced with the dead body of a character who spoke two lines earlier in the movie, and is now dead, killed off-screen. Jason kills them all! It's funny because it's brutal. Michael is not that brutal. He CAN be -- especially in the sequels -- and yes, he did come before Jason. And Jason had to get his mother to do the killing first. But... Freddy doesn't f**k around. Freddy would have kidnapped Michael Myers as a kid and killed him in his boiler room. End of story for Michael Myers.

Happy Birthday to Me
Silly movie that remains fun despite some flaws. The flaws mostly belong in the writing department though, and I guess with a fun slasher those can be forgiven. A million red herrings are thrown at the viewer despite none of them really going anywhere or setting up anything. I do think these were well directed though, it kind of felt like a talented director doing his best with the material. There wasn't much there for him, so he decides to just mess with the audience to get a reaction. There is also an infamous twist ending that I think is pretty funny. We get some fun kills, even though there is almost nothing in the way of gore. That's not really a flaw, just an observation. In a way this feels more like a giallo than an American slasher. Twisty turny, silly plot, and though gialli can get pretty gory, I'd say the slasher film is typically heavier on the gore. It's a fun movie, but the whole plotline of Virginia trying to remember stuff didn't do anything for me. With that said, I don't really know how to rate this one. I liked it more than I disliked it, for sure, but in a brainless fun kind of way.

Pleased you enjoyed it, JJ. I love Happy Birthday To Me. It's classic slasher but, as you say, it has a giallo feel/sense to it and it's such good fun. You know me, it's all about having a good time and enjoying a film. I wish I could've nominated The House On Sorority Row, too, as I feel it works as a companion piece to this in that it's serious where Happy Birthday To Me is fun, but both are well made, well executed slashers.

Terror Train (1980)
http://images3.static-bluray.com/products/20/11536_1_front.jpg
A pretty good slasher. Fun and enjoyable throughout. More than anything else I liked the setting, which adds to the film's overall atmosphere and makes it that much more claustrophobic. In the end I was surprised to find that it was shot by John Alcott (cinematographer for The Shining, Barry Lyndon, Clockwork Orange etc.), not because it was poor, but it because it looked quite different from those films. Regardless, I thought the camerawork was solid for the most part. The acting was, surprisingly, quite convincing and natural, which isn't something you get from every slasher. I saw The New York Ripper last night for example, and while I dug the sleazy feel of it and thought the violence was really well done, the acting was rather poor at times. The violence or the murders here didn't really shock, disturb or frighten me, but I like how the audience is still left guessing, despite the fact that we pretty much know the identity of the killer about ten minutes in (I guess you could say the red herrings were clever). Then in the final 30 or so minutes the film changes its tone and pace completely, and I'm not sure how to feel about it, in fact I thought it made the film look pretty flawed and inconsistent. I'm not sure how I feel about that climax either.

I think I would like to be one of the victims because victims sometimes have memorable death scenes and I think it would be funny to know I died in a slasher movie.

I find the idea of being a survivor, though, the most boring.

I think with gore, it depends on its place in the film. I HATE excessive realistic gore with absolutely no purpose. It's annoying to me. But with something like Blood Feast, a slasher or a giallo, blood/gore can be beautifully fantastic and make believe, and I love that kind of stuff.

I think with gore, it depends on its place in the film. I HATE excessive realistic gore with absolutely no purpose. It's annoying to me. But with something like Blood Feast, a slasher or a giallo, blood/gore can be beautifully fantastic and make believe, and I love that kind of stuff.
I agree, I think gore can serve a purpose and be made to look artistic. I just can't stand excessive gore and gore just for the sake of it.

I haven't, but I've seen the first two Evil Dead films. Is it similar to those films?
I guess there are some. But I love Dead Alive and hate the Evil Dead films. I think I am kind of like you on the splatter front, but I love Dead Alive. It could be one that you like too, I don't know.

hey Blue Lion.. are you into foreign horror? if so, I suggest Tras el cristal. There's not a lot of gore.. just some f*cked up scenes....
I'm more into atmospheric horror - stuff like Suspiria or The Cremator is more up my alley.

Hatchet (2006)
Adam Green
Let's make this the lightning Hall of Fame, razor quick and sharp. This is Moviegal's nom, Hatchet. We start in a swamp with Robert Englund and shortly thereafter we're on Bourbon St for Mardi Gras. Ben, the hesitant scarred lover, is the protagonist and Marcus, the cocky womanizer, is his side kick. They decide to go on a Swamp ghost tour instead of the Mardi Gras scene.
Some of us may think that this was another case of Moviegal torturing us, but i don't think that's actually the case. I may be wrong, yet i think Moviegal associates herself with Marybeth, the daughter of Robert Englund's character. She's the one in-the-know. Who's our killer? His name is Victor Crowley, a deformed creature who was struck in the face with a hatchet by his father long ago by accident. As soon as i learned of the killer, couldn't get Ozzy Osborne's 'Mr Crowley' song out of my mind. Am fascinated that Moviegal chose this particular flick. Would love to know her choice process and what else was in her wheelhouse arsenal of options. This was fairly entertaining. Adopting cricket's version of rating for the review round.
Somewhere hovering between Above Average and Average. We'll see how it grows
Favorite Kill: Victor Crowley ripped the old woman's skull in half

I will reveal all in the end!
I believe excessive gore requires the least amount of talent. Basically, I think splatter is lame.
I love you! Sorry Swan. :p
I despise gore. As far as I'm concerned, they use that type of gore, when they have no clue on how to be creative. When they have no clue on how to scare us, they simply try to gross us out. It's pathetic.
I'm trying to tell you I'm not a gorehound, I don't like gore when it is pointless either. I just feel gore can have it's place.
I HATE excessive realistic gore with absolutely no purpose. It's annoying to me.
I love you! ;)

So I watched "My Bloody Valentine" from 1981 .. which was my favorite killer movie.. now that I rewatched it.. I feel my taste for slashers has changed greatly.. I hope that is not the case with the films here.. because I see "My Bloody Valentine" as a Drama/Thriller anymore... killings were good.. I just feel like there isnt enough for me...

I watched some of My Bloody Valentine recently. What I saw was stupid. I saw the ending, though.

The original. But as I said, I didn't see much of it. But what I saw didn't look really good.

Jason X
The first Friday film to feature digital effects, early 2000s digital effects. We get too many of 'em too. But hey, whatever, man. This movie is really dumb, endearingly so. There's two types of stupid movies: The annoying ones and the amusing ones. Jason X fits into the latter category. I don't know if it really belongs in a hall of fame, it would be like wearing flip flops and shorts to a black tie affair. I'd like that actually. You know what, with the stupid high kill count, dumb effects, silly dialogue, pointless S&M scene for a grade, and crazy dumb regenerated Uber Jason Voorhees, this is a stupid movie that I think I love.
