I'm sorry you and others are unhappy with the way the Sci-Fi Hall of Fame is being run. If I would have said, no horror-sci fi, no anime, no foreign language...the **** would have hit the fan! I didn't want to run it in the first place, I even asked for volunteers, but no one wanted to run it. This has been stressful for me. I tried to make it as open to all MoFos as possible and still I get ****.

I use smileys when I make my posts, and still people take me too serious. I say those things to show why it had too much horror, etc . . . The more specific Hall of Fame threads are, the more they will avoid this problem. The more specific they are, the better chance we all have of wanting to watch most, if not all the movies nominated. There's no reason to get stressed, or mad. This is no different than when people say bad things about movies we each nominate. Everything around here is going to receive an opinion, or more. Besides, this is a new idea, making them specific. Justin just came up with it, and is the first to test drive it. It just so happens, it's really working out, and will probably now be used more times than not. You had no way of knowing that. You guys started your threads at pretty much the same time. Actually, I believe you started your's first. I am not "blaming" you. I am simply saying my opinion on what type of thread works better.

Some thoughts ...

Christmas Evil - Not really sure what to think of this. It was really slow, which isn't normally a bad thing, but here it gave the whole thing an odd feeling. I ended up losing focus through the middle and don't remember much from then on (even though I watched it yesterday). So, just didn't make too much of an impression on me. I will possibly re-watch it at some stage..

Did you ever give this another watch?

I do agree about the movie having an odd feeling, but it never felt like a pacing issue to me. It just literally is a very odd film. I tend to love movies that are outside the norm, for better or worse, the experiences of these types of films becomes almost more important than content. I know that might not be the most intelligent way to digest these movies, but I can't help myself. With that said, I don't think Christmas Evil lacks the content to be a truly impressionable film. There's something in there that could be nearly fetishistic or perhaps even a bizarre allegory on gender identity. There's also a humorous side to it that adds an even darker edge, because even if it's nearly cartoonish in it's depiction, there are people like this that exist. If not in this form, then in another. Our guy here is not cartoonish in the same way as Jason Voorhees, or Uber-Jason (:p,) but if Travis Bickle had a Santa Claus fetish. If you haven't given it a rewatch, I hope you still decide to do so before voting. If not, I feel like you might be doing yourself a disservice. And of course the film itself a disservice, but I am biased. Just defending my darling here.

I can't promise I'll rewatch it before this is done. I actually seldom rewatch films - everytime I think about it I also think of the 20000 or so films I haven't seen that might be great :D

It's interesting that I generally appreciate atmosphere in films and it being uncomfortable or odd is usually a good thing but in slasher movies I tend to prefer them to be simply violent and preferably amusing. I have no idea why that is.

I have recently watched Alice Sweet Alice and Hatchet and found the atmosphere in ASA didn't work for me whilst I really enjoyed Hatchet. Considering the type of films I usually prefer this doesn't really make sense ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Oh well ...

Anyone should be able to come in here and talk about whatever slasher film they want, even if they're not one of the people who nominated a movie. Like if Sexy wants to come in and talk about a movie he thinks got left out, he should be able to. Or if Captain Spaulding wants to come in and give his thoughts on slashers, he should be able to too.

I love Kate and Leopold too. I think Hugh Jackman is great in everything he does.

I have (had) a 2-disc set of the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth, but I loaned it to my Mom and I haven't gotten it back yet. (I think she's keeping it.)

Christmas Evil (1980)

http://horrorwarehouse.com/horrorblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/christmasevil.jpg

An odd one indeed. I don't really consider it horror. For a slasher, I felt it wasn't dark enough. When there was violence, it left me thinking "what, that's it?". It's way too subtle when it should have kicked ass. It even felt pretty artificial at times - from the behavior of the protagonist (you can't really expect great acting from a slasher I guess) to the Christmas setting that just felt forced and unnatural to me for some reason. At least it looks good, though. I didn't really like it, but I can see why others do. Sorry JJ.

Jason X

This movie is just what I thought it would be, and I really don't have anything new to add. It's a movie best watched with a few friends and some beers, and not to be taken seriously. It goes by quick and isn't boring. I would've liked to have seen this movie go the Piranha 3D route, and go completely over the top with the gore and nudity. It doesn't get close to that IMO, but it's entertaining. It was funny reading Sane's comments about how his horror taste doesn't seem to fit into his overall taste, and I was thinking the same thing. I give Sane a ton of credit for that, as he's a guy who watches a ton of high quality films, but isn't above watching and enjoying some good trash.

Terror Train (1980)
Roger Spottiswoode
Nominated by cricket

When it comes to slashers, the fun comes in finding and discussing the ones that set themselves apart. Terror Train is a clever and unique slasher, set on a train, and more about pranks, gags, and magic rather than all-out gore. The gore is pretty minimal, taking the Psycho-route of leaving kill shots up to the imagination. This film is also set apart by cinematographer John Alcott, who excelled alongside Stanley Kubrick in 2001: a Space Odyssey and The Shining. Alcott teamed up with director Roger Spottiswoode, who worked previously on landmark films with Sam Peckinpah such as Straw Dogs (1971) and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973).

One of the more stylish slashers of its period, released in the hot zone between 1978-1983, when slasher films were selling faster than hot cakes. The story begins at a fraternity New Years party, and some of the older brothers are pulling a prank on one of the pledges... while scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis reluctantly plays a part as well, forced by her sorority friends. The gag goes horribly wrong, and the freshman pledge may be the type to have more sinister games of his own down the line. In creating a story, choosing a good environment can be crucial to tension, and i like that about Terror Train. The train with its narrow hallways and claustrophobic cabins and cages make for the perfect arena for this story. This film has Ben Johnson who used to always act alongside John Wayne in westerns. He plays Carne the train operator, and was also in The Town that Dread Sundown. Carne was my favorite character in the film. Cool nom cricket, i'm glad i got a chance to watch this

Memorable Kill: Doc locks himself in the train cabin, gets his throat slit, and stuffed in the overhead luggage compartment. Doc (below) was a total azzhole, but a memorable slasher character

Okay, I've thought up a concept here that will make things a little interesting here (even though this thread is already dope,) I'll call it Defend Your Darling. Most of the things said in this thread are nice pats on the back, so this is where we will have our chance to criticize the films themselves. This is kind of like a roast, because none if it is meant to be taken personally. Each film will have it's chance to be "attacked" and then "defended," hence the title "Defend Your Darling." If you have any criticism whatsoever of the film that's currently being "defended," bring it on. Then the nominator and any fans of the film will have their chance to defend it. Since this is my idea and I am running the hall of fame, we can start with my nomination:

Okay attackers, any negative thing you have to say about Christmas Evil, let it out:

I'll go back and read what people have said about Jeepers Creepers after this. However, the first thing which came to mind, even before this finished was, this is not a slasher film. There's stalking, but that's about it. This is The Terminator and, if that's a slasher film then so be it, but if someone had nominated The Terminator I think people would've pointed out that it's not a slasher film.

As for the film, it's OK. I had to watch it at my computer, which as I've said before isn't my preferred way of watching anything and I watched it during the day with the sun streaming in, so any atmosphere it might've created for me was lost. However, I don't think it was capable of making one. For one, the monster is far too clearly seen and too often, too. I'm sure whoever created and worked on that costume was delighted to see their hard work spend so much time onscreen, but it worked against it for me.

The rest of the film went pretty much as I'd expected considering what I'd heard about it. I didn't like the first 40 minutes or so as much as a lot of other people do, but then, I didn't hate the second half as much as many others do, either. I think it's a pretty average film and, while I'd watch it again, I have no desire to and I don't know if I'd make it to the end if I did take another look.

I think this is much more like another film I know that Derek really likes, Joy Ride. Sadly, that's not a slasher film, either.

The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

Whatever you do, don't go back to your house
When Michael Myers was 6 years old, he stabbed his sister to death. For years he was locked up in Smith's Grove Sanitarium, but he escaped. Paul Rudd is in this, he's Tommy Doyle- the little boy Laurie Strode babysitted in 1978. Tommy studies Michael Myers, and on a crazy scale of 1 to 10, he's a 13. Jamie has been raped by a cult but manages to escape with her new-born baby. But Michael's in hot pursuit. The Strode family has moved into the Myers' house, in an attempt to break the curse and to finally sell the house

Memorable Kill: The Jackazz dad bought the Myers house for cheap bc no-one else would buy it, he gets stabbed and electrocuted by Michael in the laundry room

Rating: rating_2_5 5.0 / 10

The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

Jamie Strode is in Haddonfield's Children's Hospital after attacking her step-mother the previous year. She is being treated by Dr. Loomis, and hasn't said a word since the attack.. but to her horror discovers that she has a mind-link to her murdering uncle, Michael who has spent the year recovering from his wounds in a coma and awakes to go after Jamie again. His plan is to lure Jamie out of the hospital by going after Tina, who is going to a Halloween party. Jamie knows that she must leave the hospital to save herself and with the aid of Dr. Loomis sets out to defeat Michael on his own home ground - The Myers house

Least favorite of all of these

Rating: rating_2+ 4.5 / 10

http://oi62.tinypic.com/2hq42mr.jpg

The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

it's the 10 year anniversary of Michael Myers' first attack on Haddonfield. 'Where society dumps its worst nightmares.' Myers has been in a coma ever since his killing spree was stopped by Dr Loomis and Laurie Strode, and is being transferred from Ridgemont Federal Sanitarium to Smith's Grove. Michael awakens. Dr Loomis, burned face and all, is on the trail of his cursed ex-patient, the Father of modern horror

Favorite Halloween sequel. Liked Act 1 and Act 2 quite a bit. Pretty strong on atmosphere. 3rd act is full of tension, but i'm not sure what i think about the ending when Jamie pulls a Michael at the end. Like this more than Halloween II (1981) even tho the only time we see Laurie Strode in this one is in a photograph. it leans more on suspense and atmosphere than gore.

Memorable Kill: Kelly pinned to the wall via stabbing with the barrel of a shotgun. that can't be possible

Rating: rating_3_5 7.0 / 10

http://oi57.tinypic.com/20h3ddl.jpg

Halloween II (1981)

we're back in Haddonfield on October 31st, 1978. picking up where we left off with Michael escaping Dr Loomis' grasp and wreaking havoc in the neighborhood. for those of us who love the original Halloween, there will be at least some level of curiosity as to where things go from there. at the same time, it feels like we're rehashing the same story too much

at first, the entire sheriff's department is in on the manhunt. later the US Marshall arrives to return Myers to Smith's Grove, the mental facility Michael escaped from in the original. Meanwhile Laurie's in the Haddonfield hospital and the staff is getting picked off one-by-one by the Shape. shoutout to Lance Guest playing Jimmy. he starred in the Last Starfighter (1984), he and Laurie got the hots for each other

there are a few things i like, and others i don't. it's got a Halloween-like atmosphere which is a plus, but don't like the twist with Laurie being Michael's long lost sis. too contrived. which John Carpenter admits when he wrote this sequel, boozed up on Budweiser, which he didn't really want to do. so he passed off the director's chair to Rick Rosenthal. it's not terribly exciting, but there is some decent suspense.

Memorable Kill: hammer claw to the head

Rating: rating_3 6.0 / 10

Halloween (1978)

orchestrated like a Hitchcock-film on cocaine. Delivers a thrill-packed experience set on every horror fan's favorite holiday. Plays like a legend of Halloween night set to Carpenter's striking music

Memorable Kill: Annie's entire death sequence, Annie's also my favorite character

Grade: Excellent

This is the film that really fired off this whole thing we're doing right now. At a later point in here i'll get into what is better, the launching point, or taking slashers to another level, as Craven has done several times. Personally don't think there is a right answer, necessarily, comes down to gut instinct

Jeepers Creepers

This was my second viewing of this movie. I thought it was decent the first time, and to my surprise, I enjoyed it more this time.

I agree with HK that this is not a slasher, but I won't hold that against the movie. I also kind of agree with HK about the monster. I thought that when it was shown up close from the front, that it kind of looked like an angry superhero. From other angles, or when the picture wasn't completely clear, I thought it looked pretty cool.

The one big negative for me was Justin Long. The character and the performance were fine, but I just found him annoying. Otherwise, I completely enjoyed this film from start to finish. I thought I remembered not liking the ending, but as it turns out, I absolutely loved the ending. I'm glad I watched it again because I now look at it in a different light.

The Justin Long thing is a problem I have with the film too, cricket. He spends the whole film looking like the love child of Keanu Reeves and David Schwimmer. It's not his fault obviously, but it kept distracting me. :D

In my description of a slasher: it's someone who kill with knife , axe or pick... The Creeper originaly kill people with an unique axe (image below) and in the sequel he also kill people with unique knife (image below) to improve his character so in my definition it's a slasher...

Used to love it in my early teens, in fact I was downright obsessed with Freddy Krueger at one point. Some sequences are still quite striking, I was impressed by the special effects this time around. It's not really scary though. Freddy just feels very fictitious, there is no way he would frighten me if he were to actually appear in my dreams (you're just a movie character bro), unlike some protagonists from other slashers that would probably make me soil myself. Still a pretty unique and surreal slasher. Freddy is still rad regardless.

It's a comedy - it is stupid, pointless and doesn't make sense but unlike most of the other Friday the 13th movies it is well aware of those things.

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976)
Alfred Sole
Nominated by Destiny

A story of jealousy between two little sisters, Karen and Alice, takes a turn for the grotesque as we enter a murder mystery of little Karen, who got all the attention. Alice is the remaining daughter of a divorced couple, strictly forbidden in the Catholic religion. The whole film takes place in a Catholic-type community and this just adds to the ominous vibe of the story. The story centers on a little girl Alice, who is schizoid, rather violent, and perhaps not as little and undeveloped as she appears. Everyone, even Alice's aunt, thinks Alice killed her little sister out of jealousy... well, except for her divorced mother and father.

More disturbing and sinister than other slashers in here, Alice, Sweet Alice doesn't really have any light to speak of. This one has the most powerful blood content of all the nominations, for me, due to how the story is handled

There's some ambiguity to the conclusion. The main killer turns out to be a crazy old Catholic lady out to punish the sins of Alice's parents. Not only that, the crazy old woman kills the priest in church as they try and arrest her. Yikes. Alice ends up with the killer's knife and bag of bloody relics as we fade to black.

Yep, I always say that about a lot of things I see online.

I thought he was pretty funny, at times. He swears too much. I am not trying to be the pot calling the kettle black (If you were around me in everyday life, you'd get that.), but I think when you do something for the public, you could lay off of that a lot more than he did.

It's a comedy - it is stupid, pointless and doesn't make sense but unlike most of the other Friday the 13th movies it is well aware of those things.

Is it really? I'm sorry if I missed that earlier in this thread. I had no idea that when they made the movie, they were purposely being that way. I'll have to watch it again sometime, now that I know. When I first heard about this movie, I was like, "OK, this is great. They found a way to bring him back." Taking it as a serious attempt at a sequel, I was disappointed, before I ever watched it.

I actually agree with you though in a sense BlueLion, i don't think Nightmare on Elm St is scary. before even seeing any of the movies, i thought Freddy Krueger was scary. i wrote a short story mentioning him for a class. But then when i watched Nightmare for the first time, it wasn't scary, it was packed with fun and style and atmosphere and great music and Heather Langenkamp

the only thing i can think of movie-wise that actually scared me was the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when i was 8 years old. Thought i was watching a fun little family film and was introduced to a pedophile child kidnapper who lured children in with free candy

https://a.dilcdn.com/bl/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2013/01/the-child-catcher.jpg

I always imagined Freddy would be even worse than that, but he wasn't. The strange thing about Fred Krueger is, somehow everyone knows who he is. Even if they haven't seen the movies.. If you go walk through the ghetto and talk about Fred Krueger, they're gonna know who he is. If you walk through a luncheon full of rich tennis moms, they're gonna know who Freddy Krueger is. 'That guy whose movies i won't let my kids watch, gross!'

As far as fictitious, that's one way to approach stories, and movies, and characters. But it's not the way i choose to. As a kid i always enjoyed making up stories and characters, and drawing pictures of them, and sharing them with friends who liked to look. I used to make up Halloween stories and draw pumpkins to procrastinate doing school work :shifty: I think that crossed over naturally as i began to get into movie-watching. This Nightmare film is a story that fogs the line between dreams and reality. I like that best about it, it's one reason why it's my favorite movie. It's possible for dreams to merge with reality, they can come true, that's what moviemaking is all about :)

BlueLion
05-15-15, 05:56 PM
I understand completely. I agree regarding Freddy - he is definitely pretty iconic, and it's what makes the movie iconic, but upon revisiting it after nearly a decade it turns out he's not as terrifying as I once thought. I think there is some pretty dark stuff in one of the Nightmare movies, but I'm not sure which one (could it be the one with Patricia Arquette?). I'm not sure, so I guess I'm going to have to rewatch the other movies at some point. Something tells me that one is probably my favorite of the Nightmare movies.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

http://baselineimages.s3.amazonaws.com/images/560306/560306_medium.jpg

I dug the setting and the premise, but boy are the characters in this film stupid. I liked that it was nicely shot and it had some pretty tense moments in there as well, but most of this occurs only for about 30 minutes, as it slowly begins to become pretty ridiculous beyond that. This was also one of those times when I was reminded of the cliche that what is unseen is always scarier than what is actually seen, so I stopped taking it seriously as soon as I saw the appearance of the villain. Definitely watchable though. Overall not a bad nomination.

Happy Birthday to Me

This movie was a little frustrating to me. I thought it did everything well, but I didn't think it excelled in any area. One great thing can make a movie memorable; a theme song, a major shock, a great villain, etc., but this movie didn't have any of that. I can't point out any weakness in the movie, and I thought it had some of the best kills of the tournament, but it just left me wanting more. I don't mean too sound overly critical; it's just that I thought it was pretty close to being great. As it is, I definitely enjoyed it.

Jeepers Creepers

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/nunions/jeepersblu_shot10nl.jpg

OK, not my favorite, by any means, but I don't hate the film. It just had a lot of competition. It beat two of the films in my voting poll. Can anyone guess which two? :D I have watched this film three times, so far. Yes, on purpose. I do, however, like the sequel a whole lot more. It had Ray Wise! Hello! I enjoyed that story more, because of how it ended. I also loved the father's determination to kill Mr. Creepers. I love what all he did to pull that off. I'm a big revenge freak. OK, to start the movie, you just find yourself watching this idiot kid make all kinds of stupid mistakes. I hated that one scene, too. The place he fell down into. All because he wouldn't listen to his sister. Unlike some of you, though, I just love that kid. Justin Long is in a few films I really like. My favorite being Galaxy Quest. Did you read that, Nostromo? ;) Your joke last night was perfect. Did you ever find that other picture? OK, back to Jeepers. A few things I liked . . . I liked the rest of the cast just fine, like the actress they used for the psychic. Patricia Belcher, who is the lawyer from Bones. Also, Eileen Brennan from Private Benjamin, Clue, etc . . . I also liked that the song would play in the background, while he talked to the psychic, and on the car radio. I also thought the road game was intense. Not nearly as intense as it was for Stacy Keach and Jamie Lee Curtis, but still. Last would be his sick way of killing people. The story of why he did it, was bad enough, but how he did it, was truly nasty. As well as what he did to them afterwards. This takes me to the ending, which is the only thing about this film that I truly hate. What the hell? Why did he have to die? p.s. You wouldn't be yelling in that condition. Just sayin'! It helps get me over the fact that he died. What? It's not a spoiler! I didn't say who. :p

Think I enjoyed it more than I should have. It looks and feels really amateurish and cheap, so it took me a while to get used to it. The acting in particular is atrocious. Has enough gore to make your stomach churn. That's the one thing that is really well done in this film. But seriously, if I made a list of the most boring and humorless films I've seen, this would no doubt be near the top. Terror Train (1980)
http://images.best-horror-movies.com/terror-train.png
- I really like that flick mainly because of the environment and because this slasher flick is quite awesome in mood and highly rewatchable. Jamie Lee Curtis character is perfect and the casting is pretty good. Really a great nomination from Cricket and the kill especially the Doc which I was glad that he died.
Best Kill: The Doc

Jason X (2001)

- This flick is whole fun and pleasure like every movie with Jason Voorhees. First it start great with Jason killing the hell out of everybody inside the biocrynegical lab after he wake up inside a space ship were he kill again the hell out of everybody and get kill again and now become a goda*mn monster with metal everywhere. it's definitely not a movie for everybody but for myself it's the perfect guilty pleasure with one awesome icon of horror.

You little turkey! You should have joined in. Well, for someone who said just two days ago, that I could have had this turned in already, I am a bit stuck. I know the first three, and the last three. Dressed to Kill (1980)
Brian De Palma
Nominated by BlueLion

Don't make me be a bad girl again
Suppose the line can be hazy between a murder-mystery and a slasher, although there's enough major slasher tropes here to see why BlueLion nominated Dressed to Kill. There's the a killer hunting down blondes, a straight-razor kill weapon, several showers scenes, and a really nice use of tension and style by Brian De Palma. I think my favorite part was in the art museum. That sequence was craftily & stylishly made. Recognized Angie Dickinson from Rio Bravo (1959), that's a growing number of John Wayne's co-stars in slasher films i've watched recently, with Ben Johnson in both Terror Train and The Town that Dreaded Sundown, which also had Andrew Pine. Going to be challenging figuring out where to place this in my rankings, as it's a good film. I've got three left to watch in here- Christmas Evil, Jeepers Creepers, & Happy Birthday to Me.

I'm in the same boat. I had no idea I'd get this confused. The four in the middle have me stuck. It's kind of annoying. :p I've switched them a good four to five times, already, so I walked away from it. This is why I've never done a top 100 list.

Finished Happy Birthday to Me. Don't want to do a whole review but I'll say I found it to be an incredibly underrated, unique slasher film. Was much more competently made than most slashers, I found. The twist was a little silly, but silly twists aren't unusual for slashers. I'd say when it comes to slasher films, it's probably one of the best I've seen, or at least a favorite. Great nomination honeykid, was really impressed.

Anyway, sending my list in in a second. Had a lot of fun with this hall of fame. Cheers guys.

i'll be watching my last three noms by early this week and send in my rankings. to get a bit of chatter going, or jibba jabba, if you will. (this is the good kind that i have time for :D) anyone care to make some commentary on slasher history? however brief

to get a lil something started by hitting on some of my viewpoints when it comes to key slasher movie history, Peeping Tom and Psycho are the grand daddys whose craft inspired and legitimized what became a movie genre... although i don't consider either of those movies actual pure slashers the more i've thought on it. My take doesn't have to be definitive or anything, i think each viewer has the freedom to choose for themselves. Both Peeping Tom and Psycho were released in 1960. There were a lot of cool giallos that came about in the 60s that sort of foreshadowed and began to generate the spirit and atmosphere of the slasher flick. The first movie i'd call a slasher is a Bay of Blood (1971), then came Black Christmas and Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974. There are a few i'd like to watch from there before Michael introduced himself, such as Massacre at Central High (1976) and Drive-In Massacre (1977). Naturally, Halloween launched slashers into major notoriety and box office success in 1978. Inspiring a slasher film craze that ran into 1984, as slashers seemed to have run their course and become rotten... when Wes Craven came in and resurrected the slasher with Nightmare on Elm Street. A trick he pulled off again in 1996 with Scream. there's a really rapid and concise rundown skipping lots of cool fun flicks. For more tune into the slash vault some time :) by the way, where's Swan? i feel like he hasn't been in this thread in a bit

I know he doesn't like Hall of Fames, but if he was to do one i think slashers might be the one he'd have some fun with. maybe

You're right, I did like it. Not great or anything and it's not troubling the top of my list by any stretch, but it was OK.

One of the main reasons I bought this unseen was because Mercedes McNab was in it, but I didn't know she went topless. That was a very nice surprise, so thank you MG for finally getting me to see this film that'd been sat on my shelf for a few years now.

As for the film itself, well it's a greatest hits of American horror with obvious and numerous nods to (but not limited to) The Burning and Friday The 13th. I felt the last 20 minutes really took this film up a notch and I think it sits well in my memory because of it. The kills are quite good, but my two favourites are the more old school (the tour guide getting his head taken off with a spade and the girl getting her face sanded and then speared on the handle)

And with that I've sent my list in.

Christmas Evil (1980)
Lewis Jackson
Nominated by JiraffeJustin

The thing about Christmas-horror story concepts is how well they work in a twistedly way. parts of Christmas that seem innocent and good become strange and weird. The story is about a guy named Harry who works at a toy factory, and he's all kinds of messed up from a Santa experience he had as a kid. All grown up as an odd middle-aged man, now Harry keeps a book on people... One for the good boys & girls, and one for the naughty. he writes about people in the naughty book 'picks his nose,' 'uses profane language,' 'kicks over garbage cans,' 'throws rocks at dogs,' etc. Then in the good book, he writes about one little girl 'just a darling!' There's definitely a current of dark humor, at the parties and around town, and some of the looks you catch in Harry's eyes, played by Brandon Maggart, are actually pretty scary. Just his eyes. He really got into the role, and had me both understanding him and being totally creeped out by him at the same time. It's that kind of movie. And the end fits really well
with his van soaring off into the night sky like Santa Claus. Kind of got the sense of how, ya know if Santa really was real in a way he might be really sort of freaky, knowing who did good things and who did bad things and making toys for them

Best Kill: can't remember his name, but the guy who had Harry work for him at the toy factory when he lied and said he was going out of town but really just went to the local bar and bragged to his friends about 'getting that shlug Harry to work for me tonight'

Above Average, definitely

Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
J. Lee Thompson
Nominated by Honeykid

Liked that first-scene schoolgirl in the high white leggings, why'd she have to die so quick. The story is a murder mystery of sorts following the 'top 10' students at a fancy-prestigious school for the wealthy. Just got done watching this and my mind is still spinning, this is one wild movie hk  so Jenny is a member of the 'top 10' inner circle of students at the school. are they the 10 smartest? are they the ten 'cool' kids? we don't really find out for sure, and i guess it doesn't really matter. All we know is apparently none of the other top 10 kids wanted to go to Jenny's birthday party, even tho she's one of the top 10. :skeptical: anyways, i really liked the opening vibe of the film, the characters were really fun interacting with each other at the pub and in the ensuing scenes. We start to find out more about Jenny (Melissa Sue Anderson), who has brain damage from a traumatic event that gradually comes back to her over the course of the story... where Jenny and her mom crashed off a bridge into the water. outrageous, bizarre, an enigma movie, the last twist was so random, but it had to be i guess to find a way to top everything you'd just seen. definitely a honeykid experience, and for that i find myself liking it for some odd reason

verdict? wtf outta 10

Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Victor Salva
Nominated by Derek Vinyard

First off i want to say that i was not very much looking forward to this, but I always want to have an open mind so that's how i approached Jeepers Creepers. The story follows Justin Long's character and his sister Trish (Gina Philips), who was quite easy on the eyes. They're driving down a country highway and come across a maniac in a big truck who tries to run them over. Down the road they see him again dumping body bags down a sewer pipe. Surprisingly i sort of thought Justin Long's mouthy annoyingness kind of worked in a film called Jeepers Creepers- which just sounds like a corny title to me. Anyways, lets get into the killer, who is called the Creeper, i guess. To me he looked like a cross between the Creature From the Black Lagoon, mixed with an alien from an old Star Trek episode, mixed with a bat-like demon guy, and then later his netting around the face looked kind of like Predator. Basically he looked like this big mishmash of stuff and different ideas

http://24.media.tumblr.com/b3990cd3d6172bdd8b1474a186545540/tumblr_mywhwbhfr41rp0vkjo1_500.gif

this demon creeper guy smells people, kills them, eats them, and hangs them up all over his room and sews them all together in this really sinister looking dark dungeon thing down a sewer pipe literally right off the main road. Like 10 yards off a country highway. Really? i mean if you were gonna dump bodies down a sewer and do all this weird stuff wouldn't you go somewhere more secluded? eh, whatever.
His kill weapon was this sort of random-looking axe

http://oi57.tinypic.com/2450svt.jpg

so there's sort of this really dark vibe in a way, but then it's in a movie called Jeepers Creepers... where the killer sings a really easy-going 'Jeepers Creepers' song. So you had some really dark-looking stuff, mixed with kind of a goofy Justin Long vibe and a kind of corny title

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/jeeperscreepers/images/b/bc/Jeepers-creepers-2001-09-gjustin-long.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110617050523

I don't want to take anything away from Derek's enjoyment of Jeepers Creepers, i respect that he likes it. Had they gone for an all out kind of cornball, camp vibe and just made it really funny i might have enjoyed it quite a bit. As it is i think it just had too many different things and vibes going on. as it stands i saw it is as basically average, gave it my best shot Derek

And with that, i'm done. i'll send in my rankings to jiraffejustin

Halloween's a great film, love it, it was my #2 in here. In comparing Halloween and Nightmare, I saw Halloween first, like 5 years ago, and i liked it. It grew on me thereafter. Then i saw Nightmare a couple years later, and i don't recall actually weighing it against Halloween at that point. I just recall putting in the blu-ray, and getting to the title screen, which looks like this

http://oi62.tinypic.com/97qump.jpg

and has quotes playing over it 'Come to Freddy' 'aghhh' 'nancy!' '*scream*' 'ahahaha' with excellent Charles Bernstein nightmare music. and then the movie happened, and there's not another movie that beats it for me. There's not one movie i'd put ahead of Nightmare on Elm Street, in an all-time Hall of Fame. Not even The Shining, which i love basically to infinity. So in a way maybe it's sad that my #1 can't win this thing. Anyways, this Hall of Fame got me back in the drawing zone, and now i'm looking into going to illustration school to develop my own stories. So this has still been a lot of fun for me

All right, Mr Demille, Freddy was ready for his close-up

No dig on Halloween, its strength is its directness and its simplicity. Michael is pure evil, it doesn't have more to it than that, and it doesn't need to either

Nightmare brings layered storytelling to slasher films that weren't there before. Wes Craven made Freddy more subliminal and in your imagination and in your sleep. Maybe dreams are just a weird brain function, and nothing more. If that's the case, life is boring and scientific. I choose for life to be exciting and mysterious and imaginative. I thought about making a big montage about movies and dreams, pulling in Total Recall (1990), The Wizard of Oz, Inception, The Maltese Falcon, etc, etc

Congrats to Swan on the big W!!

This is how I ranked them-

1. Halloween
2. Dressed to Kill
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street
4. Alice, Sweet Alice
5. Christmas Evil
6. Jeepers Creepers
7. Terror Train
8. Happy Birthday to Me
9. Hatchet
10. Jason X

The only easy choices were Christmas Evil at #5 and Jason X at #10. 1 through 4 were very close, and 6 through 9 were very close.

I hardly like any movies set in outer space, no matter what kind they are. Spaceballs, Star Trek, 2001, Gravity, Jason X, it doesn't matter. That was the only movie that didn't leave me with a positive feeling. I really enjoyed Hatchet, but I hated how it ended in the middle of the action, and that's why I put it at #9. I think I owe Happy Birthday to Me another watch. I think that's a very good movie, but I watched it when I was in a bad mood. Terror Train is an average slasher; I just love the settings and the costumes. I enjoyed Jeepers Creepers, and unlike Hatchet, I loved the ending. Christmas Evil was my favorite nomination, a movie I totally enjoyed, and one I never would've watched on my own. The top 4 are all superb, and really could go in any order for me. It had been the longest time since I had seen Halloween, and therefore seemed the most fresh. That's probably part of the reason I had it at #1. On the other hand, I had recently seen Alice, Sweet Alice for the 70's countdown.

Scariest-Halloween
Best Villain-Freddy
Best Actor-Brandon Maggart(Christmas Evil)
Best Actress-Nancy Allen(Dressed to Kill)
Biggest Surprise-Christmas Evil
Biggest Disappointment-None

Thanks to JJ for running this awesome Hall of Fame, and thanks to all the other members for the great nominations and posts, and for making it a blast and finishing up!

Which is why it's always great to have Swan (and people like him) taking part in these. They're honest and don't skewer the results.

As for me, well, my nomination finished one spot lower than I thought it might, but I'm glad that some of you saw it and really liked it. Anyway, my votes went as follows.

A Nightmare On Elm Street
Halloween
Happy Birthday To Me
Jason X
Alice, Sweet Alice
Hatchet
Dressed To Kill
Terror Train
Christmas Evil
Jeepers Creepers

Hatchet was the biggest surprise for me as, if I'd put this list together on day one without having seen Hatchet or Jeepers Creepers, I'd have thought I'd have had Dressed To Kill higher (as I like that film) and, maybe Terror Train, too.

Thanks for running this, JJ, you've done a great job.

This hall of fame was awesome, and mainly because nobody strategically voted. Or at least it didn't appear that way. More than one person had their nomination in the bottom half of their votes, and seven of the voters had a movie that wasn't their nomination as their #1.

or, Sexy, is Texas Chainsaw Massacre your favorite slasher? i think it might be. It's also possible Honeykid has a different favorite slasher than what was nominated in here. I'd be interested to hear, if so, and that goes for everyone too

TCM is my favorite slasher as well. I wanted to nominate something different because I thought for a slasher it was too popular and most of the people here had seen it.

But Halloween is definitely the best slasher in this list for me. It's obviously the most well directed.

I call these things horror films, not "slashers."

Going by the slasher title... overall, I think probably the best one is The Slumber Party Massacre.

Then Scream 2.

I don't know. It's hard to pick favorites. When it comes to doing that, I think you have to judge more without your emotions, but I feel that emotions are just as important. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Halloween just doesn't thrill me like it used to. It's possible all the stupid sequels it has had bleached out the appeal of the original movie. Or maybe it's just age and I'm no longer all that fascinated by Dr. Loomis and Laurie Strode. The characters in that movie don't hold up with me -- although I do like Dr. Loomis in the sequels. But the others... not so much. It has atmosphere, it has a great villain, it has great music... but it has a lot of lame scenes, no matter how well they might have been shot. I think the teenage characters are weak. Way overshadowed by that booming loud Michael Myers, as heard on the soundtrack. And as I've said before -- Jamie Lee Curtis is too mannish. She works better when she's playing sexy and not geeky. When she's only in her bra, she looks more like a woman. But in Halloween, she looks like a guy babysitting two kids. It's just weird. I'm criticizing that movie on things that I think are overlooked and ignored. It's a good movie, but not one I'm always eager to rewatch. Not anymore, at least.

Hello Honeykid?

Not that I care if someone didn't finish it. I'm leaving all the policing of these threads to Gaupy, however, I was curious what made you say that. If by chance the fact that my reviews stopped, is why you think that, then no, I have seen every movie here. Hell, if I am going to watch Machete and Hatchete, then I will watch just about anything, except maybe some Anime (Episodes!).

I honestly stopped my reviews, because I spent more time on them, then my life's schedule allows. So, since I have a very strong belief that they weren't getting read, I stopped wasting my time on them.

Well, my nightmare from this morning is slowly coming together . . .

This morning's dream . . . I am in a gigantic white building, where the rooms are connected in a maze pattern. There is a psycho killer out for everyone, so I need to find my mother and sister. The next thing I know, I am with Beatrice Arthur from The Golden Girls. We are talking to some older detective about finding our missing families. We are walking off, when I see the killer go by one of the rooms, after a midget. Then he raises his machete up, and slices the midget right down the middle. He falls to the floor in two pieces, and I gasp. The killer looks my way, and I do what those dumb girls do in slasher movies. I cover my mouth, and hope he didn't hear me. Suddenly, in real life, someone opened my back door very loudly, and it woke me up.

Welcome to the Slasher Hall of Fame.

I haven't been able to gather a massive following for this hall of fame, but you know, that's alright with me. I think the enthusiasm of the members we do have will make up for the lack of numbers, and while we only number six strong at the moment, I expect we might be able to pick up a couple stragglers along the way. I'd accept up to six more people, so join or die!

Now for the already committed members, go ahead and send me your nominations. I'm ready to get this show on the road.

For what is acceptable for nominations, I won't make the rules for what a slasher is. Each person might have their own definition, and I'll allow you to make your own distinction. Just use some sense when nominating, don't get crazy on us.

The one thing that you can't nominate is Psycho. Not because I don't think it belongs in a slasher hall of fame, but because it is already in our hall of fame. It won the very first one.

Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978) Nominated by Swan

http://www.panorama-cinema.com/V2/images/critique/critique607/affiche1.jpg

When I was thinking about what I would nominate, I was trying to decide if I should nominate Halloween - the quintessential and best slasher film to date - or go with something lesser-known. But when I pictured myself nominating something else, I felt like I was being a bit... blasphemous. Not only to the slasher genre, not only because it defines a slasher in every inkling of its being, but because it is one of those films that defines me, as a person. It has been there for my enjoyment for most of my life and has inspired me in many, many ways. It has influenced much of what I seek in cinema - effective simplicity, visceral horror, intelligence, passion, and overall, a good time. So it's a very personal nomination. On top of that, though, I simply think it deserves to win the first, maybe only, slasher hall of fame.

Christmas Evil (Lewis Jackson, 1980) Nominated by jiraffejustin

http://i.imgur.com/ZgOLP57.jpg

Okay, so hear me out. This is like an art-slasher or something. It's by far the most surreal slasher I've ever seen, and I think it's a misunderstood movie that really needs to be reexamined by cinephiles. John Waters is the biggest fan of the movie, in terms of fame x vocal support. He calls it the greatest Christmas movie of all-time. I don't really know what to say, it's a bizarre movie. I hope everybody will at least appreciate it on some level, because there's nothing else like it.

But most importantly, the main character looks like a combination of Bill Murray and Tommy Lee Jones.

Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma, 1980) Nominated by BlueLion
