Hatchet (2006) Nominated by MovieGal
- This movie is definitely not good.... but I still appreciate it because it's pretty entertaining and because Victor Crowley remind me of Jason Voorhees. The only thing that annoy me during the movie is that pretty stupid blonde girl. I like the part of the back-story of Victor Crowley with his father who ''kill'' him accidently with a hatchet. The boat driver character is pretty funny and I enjoy that flick.

I really, really, REALLY hated Jason X when I saw it in a theater back in 2001.
I can't believe a Jason Voorhees in space movie came out in the year 2001, though.......
I haven't seen it in years. I NEED TO GET A COPY OF IT AGAIN. The last time I watched it, I was cool with it, but I really despised it the first time I saw it. I hated how stupid the whole thing was. I wanted it more serious.
Plus, the robot/android woman -- I had read an early draft of the script before the movie was released, and she was A HELL of a lot more funnier than in the filmed version. She sang a dirty song while she was kicking Jason's ass. That was all changed and the result was very weak. You know how her fake nipples fall off during that one scene -- it was a lot more humor like that. Better than that, actually.

Terror Train
I mentioned that the red herrings in Happy Birthday to Me were pretty silly and didn't lead to much, well the dadgum herring in Terror Train was pretty damn effective. We've had some silly and stupid slashers that were good fun, but Terror Train is the only one of my hof watches, so far, that has been both clever and fun. The story isn't the most original, prank gone wrong revenge slasher. But beyond that there is some originality in the way the revenging slasher goes about his business. The whole thing taking place on a train is also a fun addition. Really good nomination, cricket.
I notice that BlueLion and I had pretty similar thoughts, except I think I enjoyed the pacing change. It feels like things are kicked into overdrive and it's business time when the shift comes.

Halloween
I've seen it at least a couple times before, but it's been so long that I hardly remembered any of it-just a little bit at the end. It's been said at times that this is an unoriginal story that's just about some crazed killer stalking people. I think that there is some merit to that, but I think it's unimportant. It was probably looked at as a little more original when it was released before all of it's copycats came out. An original story is great, and it might make me want to see a movie more now, but the effectiveness of a movie all comes down to execution. I love madmen on the loose movies, and I could watch a thousand different variations if they were all done well. The execution in Halloween is pretty much perfect; I don't see how it could've been done any better. It grabbed me right from the beginning with a young Michael stalking his sister. Going back further, even the opening credits were chilling. Horror is so much about atmosphere; the mood, the lighting, the music, and this movie nails it right from the start, and it never let's up. The scenes of Michael stalking his prey are quite unnerving, and at times it made me feel like I was actually there. The neighborhood and the people who inhabit it are unremarkable, average people, and combine that with the fact that Michael is just a man, gives the movie a sense of realism, and it made me think that this could be any neighborhood-even mine. I had always thought of Michael as an indestructible killing machine but that's not the case at all. You can run from him and fight back; this leads to uncertainty, and it's this uncertainty that adds to the tension. I wasn't sure who was going to get it and who wasn't. The tension is also a big reason why the killings seem so brutal, despite the lack of graphic violence. I don't think that is easy to accomplish. There's some things in this movie that I've seen in many other horror movies, like when the heroine is in the picture and the killer suddenly sits up in the background from a lying down position, and when the heroine is trying to get into a locked house with the killer on the chase. These scenes have never been done as well as they are in this movie. The whole movie is like a clinic on the basic fundamentals for how to scare a person. The cast is very good; Curtis has always been one of my favorite actresses and she is terrific here displaying a nice combination of vulnerability, intelligence, and fortitude. Donald Pleasence adds a dignified presence as the doctor.

Favorite Kill: The kills are not done in an outrageous matter, so I'll go with the first one because it helps set the tone for the rest of the movie.
Verdict: Excellent
Woo! Go cricket! So happy you liked it after all these years.

Terror Train
This is another movie that I could barely remember, but it turned out to be almost exactly how I pictured it. The concept is the prank gone wrong, followed by the revenge. It's a very overused concept, yet one that I never get sick of. The movie is not overly scary, thrilling, or funny, but it has at least some touch of all three. I liked all the different costumes and the party atmosphere complete with a role for David Copperfield, but what really makes the movie is the location. Without that location, this movie does not stand out. I thought the last 20 minutes were very good, and overall it's an enjoyable film for slasher fans. This is a movie best watched with friends over a few beers. The movie is well made with a solid cast, with especially good work from Jamie Lee Curtis.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) - Wes Craven *rewatch nominated by Nostromo
https://hyunmo2.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/a-nightmare-on-elm-street-wallpapers-for-windows-7.jpg
- First of all it's one of the best rewatch I've seen recently, the mood and atmosphere of the movie is such amazing and many scenes like the scene were Freddy running after Tina in the street. Robert Englund is awesome as Freddy Krueger, Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp are also pretty solid. The best flick of Wes Craven and also an instant classic of horror. The ending is da*n freakin' nice, Freddy Krueger rules.

Hatchet
There's been some talk about gore in this thread. I happen to like movies with brutal, sadistic violence like Hostel and Last House on the Left, but I don't usually like movies with over the top, comical gore like Braindead. Because of this, I didn't think I'd like Hatchet. The movie is silly, but it wasn't quite too silly for me. I love the theme of people on vacation who go from partying to fighting for their lives, and this was a good setting to do it, from Bourbon St. to the Bayou swamps. It's not a scary movie, but the woods and swamps do add an element of unease. This movie is solely about fun, and it's fun that I had. I liked the cast and characters just fine and the killer is decent. I loved the cameos from Robert Englund and Tony Todd. If I had one problem, it was that it ended so abruptly in the middle of the action. Hatchet was a good surprise for me.

Just a typical slasher, but one that did pretty much everything right when it comes to slash cinema making so I had plenty of fun with it. Jamie Lee was excellent as usual - we may never have a final girl quite like her again. I love that David Copperfield was in this. I saw him live once. Didn't know he was in a horror movie. I heard this movie mentioned the other day in Scream. Don't know why I'm mentioning that.

Dressed to Kill
I think De Palma is mostly known as an homage director, mainly to Hitchcock, but in this one he channels his inner Argento. Sure, Hitchcockian themes are still there, we have the voyeurism with multiple characters peeping through windows. But De Palma takes the sexuality and eroticism of Hitchcock films and turns it up to eleven.
Out of all the nominations the only one that will probably be better directed is Carpenter's Halloween. De Palma has proven that he can be a very good director, in my opinion, and while this wasn't a conventional slasher, I am glad it was nominated to kind of provide a little bit of credibility for our hall of fame.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
I can't believe I saw this at the movies over 30 years ago; it doesn't seem that long ago. I remember how big it was when it came out; it was something fresh after countless Halloween and Friday the 13th knockoffs. Horror fans needed a movie like this, and it did not disappoint. The movie was pretty much how I remembered it, except I thought Freddy was in it even more. I could've partly been recalling some of the sequels. I don't think the movie is scary due to tension, but obviously it uses nightmares as a natural source of terror. The nightmare scenes are done very well; so many times I've had a nightmare in which I was running, yet not getting anywhere. The movie is a lot of fun. It seems like there's always something going on and it never drags. Freddy of course is an amazing villain, with a great look, those razor fingers, and a devious personality. The movie, and the whole franchise, is all about him, and Robert Englund is superb in the role. The rest of the cast does a good job too, *although I didn't see any sign from Johnny Depp that he would become a future star.

Halloween (1978)
http://cocaineandpopcorn.com/images/Movieposters/halloween.jpg
Okay, so first let me get this out of the way - I don't find Halloween scary. Does that mean it's weak horror? Far from it. I can't help but feel that its self-awareness is what prevents me from truly loving it, but that's the only drawback I can think of for now. There were instances when I wasn't sure how to feel about the way Carpenter made Myers enter the frame (you could almost tell when he'd pop up at one point), but for the most part I found his presence to be effective. Compared to villains like Leatherface I think he's actually pretty lightweight (basically if he'd make me shiver, Leatherface would make me lose it), but I still think he's a rather disturbing villain. What I most admire about the film is that it's very stylishly directed, the camerawork in particular is by far one of my favorite things about it (the opening scene's long take being the highlight), in addition to capturing the Halloween mood perfectly and the fact that it holds up to repeat viewings. Halloween is a must-see for fans of the genre.

There is a chance I am doing this wrong. I love my choice, but it doesn't have a specific genre in it. Like say the sci-fi theme, or slashers being kind of close to a genre. Does it have to be a specific genre? If so, this will suck for me. :( Mine is the type where a lot of genres can be used. Well, at least four can be. So, is I be wrong?

No. Creating a new category is creative and necessary.
RE: BlueLion.
I don't find Halloween scary either, but that's because horror movies in general don't really scare me. I think Michael and Freddy scared the wits out of me as a kid to where I just don't get scared by movies anymore.
I find it more effective in terms of mood - like you say, it captures the Halloween spirit perfectly, and it's effectively creepy/eerie (different from scary).
I agree that Leatherface would scare me more in real life, but you know why that is? Leatherface is realistic. I don't really find Halloween all that realistic. It's metaphoric more than anything. If it was realistic, Michael wouldn't have gotten up at the end after having been shot so many times! Halloween is one big hour and a half metaphor for lurking evil, and it captures that in spades.

I don't find Halloween scary either, but that's because horror movies in general don't really scare me. I think Michael and Freddy scared the wits out of me as a kid to where I just don't get scared by movies anymore.
Once you've been overexposed to them, the killers in these movies start to feel like family.
I agree that Leatherface would scare me more in real life, but you know why that is? Leatherface is realistic.
Leatherface is realistic? I guess (especially the Leatherface in the original movie). It's certainly realistic to imagine a man like him, but it's an extremely rare man.
Michael Myers actually seems more realistic to me. I mean, you've gotta take away the stupid mask and his back story and his immortality... take away those things and you've got a stalker who watches women through windows and kills them with a knife. You're more likely to find that in the world than Leatherface, who has to be retarded and obsessive with dead people and loves chainsaws and eating people.
I think it's more about how the movie portrays them, than the actual characters. Yes, Leatherface is insane but he's portrayed as a realistic psychopath, while Michael is portrayed in a more metaphoric way.

I suppose. Michael is, like, possessed. At least Dr. Loomis is always there to try to convince us that he's not human. Leatherface isn't possessed. Leatherface is a wild animal. He's like a caveman, in a way.

OK, if that is true then I will post my earlier post where I announced it.
First, to Justin, you better join my Hall of Fame. All you guys should. Honestly, with the wide range of movies that can be nominated in my Hall of Fame choice, I would think a lot of people would join in, but I suppose you never know.
OK, my Hall of Fame choice is . . . Happy Holidays ~ Holidays To Die For!
You can use any holiday film, as long as someone is killed in it. We are talking about movies like . . .
Die Hard 1 & 2
Gremlins
Turbulence
Halloween 2 ~ because the first Halloween will already be in the Hall of Fame. ;)
Hocus Pocus
Batman Returns
Reindeer Games
He Knows You're Alone
Black Christmas. . . and so on!
OK, I hope this works!

I was thinking about doing a non-traditional Christmas movie hall of fame at some point, so this is cool.
Some thoughts ...
Christmas Evil - Not really sure what to think of this. It was really slow, which isn't normally a bad thing, but here it gave the whole thing an odd feeling. I ended up losing focus through the middle and don't remember much from then on (even though I watched it yesterday). So, just didn't make too much of an impression on me. I will possibly re-watch it at some stage.
Halloween - I'm going to be one of the people who may stop Halloween from winning this thing. There's nothing wrong with it - in fact I quite like it - but having a killer that is simply pure evil stops me from really feeling overly engaged with the whole thing. The atmosphere is great and it's pretty scary but I have trouble if I don't really care if anyone lives or dies ... but that's probably just me :)
Jason X - If I was to list what makes up "my type of film", Jason X would probably contain none of those things but I just found it so ridiculous that it was one of the funnier films I think I've ever seen. That probably doesn't make it a great slasher but it makes it great fun.
Jeepers Creepers - Much of this is not too bad and the acting is pretty decent for this type of film. The bad guy is interesting and pretty scary. What stops me really liking it is the decision making of the characters. Now, I know it's silly to criticise a horror movie for that but the two main characters in this were just complete morons ... or the script wasn't great.
A Nightmare on Elm Street - Like most I have fond memories of this film however I'm generally not very nostalgic when it comes to movies so it wasn't as good as I remembered but I still like it.
So far I'd say there are three I like and two I didn't really enjoy.

Like Swan said, Leatherface is more realistic because the filmmaking style in Texas Chain Saw Massacre is more realistic. Halloween resembles fiction more than reality, the scenes when Myers appears from behind a bush or behind the white sheets are the prime example of this. Halloween feels more like a movie or fiction, whereas Texas Chain Saw Massacre is shot in almost documentary style. Leatherface is also more realistic if you consider the story's actual plausibility (one could see it happening, as crazy as it may sound), which I don't think applies to Halloween.
OK, as you all know, I would have picked Halloween if I had been able to. It was my first slasher type horror movie. I've loved that movie since I was 15 years old. I had a recorded copy of it from cable that I literally played a few times a day, every day of the week, for weeks at a time. I was obsessed.
So where does Alice Sweet Alice come in at? Well, I found it one day at a Woolworth store, back when I was around the same age. I was maybe 16. Anyway, it was super cheap, and I liked the movie box cover, so I bought it. Well, on that year's Thanksgiving, I bailed on going to the big family get together. I wanted to stay home. So I cooked up a bowl of soup, popped that baby in for it's first viewing, and it scared the crap out of me. There I was, all by myself. It was years before I watched that thing again. By the time I did, I was much older, so of course I wasn't scared. I was now more into the suspense/whodunit part of the movie. I have enjoyed showing it to those who have yet to see it, just to see if they could figure it out. I have been wanting to show my children for some time now, so they will view it with me. I hope you all enjoy it. :)

Alice Sweet Alice
The more of these slashers I watch, the more convinced I am of the greatness of Halloween. That's not a slight on the others, but I keep saying things like "oh man, this direction is going to be the second best behind only Halloween" or "oh man, this music is going to be the second best behind only Halloween." That's really high praise, but nobody wants to finish second. Anyway, the music in Alice Sweet Alice is probably the second best in the whole competition behind only Halloween. At times I was reminded of the creepy noises in the soundtrack of Suspiria, except Suspiria came out a year later. And there was a Psycho poster visible during the film, a cool little Easter egg. There's a lot to love with this nasty proto-slasher. I love how the whodunnit doesn't last the whole movie, and we know who it is a good twenty minutes before the film is over. I already mentioned how great the music is. The Catholic iconography juxtaposed with the grisly violence is pretty powerful, and I guess with the history of the Catholic church one could say it's even apropos. Still it's that stark contrast of what the church is supposed to represent with what is happening on the screen that gives me chills.
Great nomination Destiny

To weigh in on the Sexy-BlueLion-Swan discussion, When it comes to my 3 favorites slasher movies, each one covers its own corner on the market
Texas Chainsaw Massacre- most macabre of the three, the most visceral, with that grating chainsaw sound that's so effective. As others have mentioned, its documentary style serves well and sets it apart
Halloween- orchestrated like a Hitchcock-film on cocaine. Delivers a thrill-packed experience set on every horror fan's favorite holiday. Plays like a legend of Halloween night set to Carpenter's striking music
Nightmare on Elm Street- the imaginative slasher, unbound by the physical world, haunting your dreams and living in your imagination. Freddy's glove, made of sheet metal, pipes, and old leather from his boiler room, connects the spiritual realm to ours. Rooted in dreams and imagination, Freddy's powers are practically limitless. You imagine it, Freddy can do it. The music by Charles Bernstein is a personal favorite and rotates onto my playlists often
Black Christmas is a favorite as well. Its holiday-based horror may have provided the template for Carpenter to build on. I see it as a hidden gem

Jeepers Creepers
Pretty cliche horror film. Stupid characters that you just get annoyed with. The sh*tty acting probably didn't help. If you are self-aware by making reference to things like "You know the part in horror films where..." you better be a good movie with something to say about horror films, or that's going to be really freaking annoying. Every time somebody opened their mouth I just kept getting angrier and angrier.
The villain has a cool look with his beat up truck and trashy Cowboy outfit. So at least there is that.
Eh, I am not a fan of this movie. Sorry Derek.

Pretty dumb and average, but I was actually having fun with it for the most part. Can't give it too high a rating though, because it's not very good. As time went on I really started to feel it's stupidity too. I will say if this was made in the 80's I might have loved it - it could just be that I'm not a fan of a lot of modern horror so there's a bit of prejudice there. Anyway, I don't think Green was aiming to make The Godfather here so I can't really complain.
Some awesome kills though.
I don't want to run this behind any, so Justin, just get onto me if I drag ass any. One good thing about me, is my record for not sleeping. So far I've lasted 7 days and 7 nights. I don't think I'll need that long to catch up.

Halloween ~ I'm going to watch this again tonight, for the one millionth time. Just in case I forgot about something. Besides, I'm going to have to recover from Hatchet. ;)
Christmas Evil ~ I will be watching this sometime this weekend.
Dressed to Kill ~ If it's OK, this is one of three that I'd like to watch at the start of next week.

Happy Birthday to Me ~ Early next week.

No need to worry about dragging ass here. I think we will be fine. We are actually running at a blistering pace, much faster than usual. No reason to get caught up in the speed, these things usually last a few months. This group has just been killing it, pun slightly intended.

Alice, Sweet Alice
This was my second viewing after first seeing it for the 70's list, thanks to HK recommending it. I really love the tone of this movie with it's gritty, yet not outdated look. It's creepy with Alice and the religious element, but also seedy and brutal, which suits my taste very well. I'm sure there are some plot holes here, but I don't care with these kinds of movies. I think the whole cast is convincing, if unspectacular, throughout. Definitely a lost classic, and probably a top 10 slasher film for me.

Destiny, you need to give me your honest thoughts on Hatchet
Well, I will first have to remind you that I hate gore. Gore doesn't scare me, it grosses me out, and I see no true purpose in that. I will handle it the best I can, even by covering my eyes. However, this went way past anything I care to "deal" with. With that being said, I must tell you that I watched the sweet Robert Englund's opening scene, and turned it off. I wanted to keep this Hall of Fame rolling along, but I wasn't going to review anything else, without being able to do this review first. So I finally finished watching it.
OK, after Robert Englund leaves us, it's the next day. There's a cool Saint Patrick's Day party going on, minus the dumb "girl's gone wild" whores. Something else that is used to bring viewers in, when the story just can't do it on it's own. A lot of bad horror movies have severe gore, and loads of nudity. They just do. OK, so it's time for another favorite cameo pop up. This does help, having familiar names pop up as cameos, but I sometimes wonder why certain stars end up in specific movies. Joel Murray, who pops up later, would be one big what the f@ck are you doing here question for this film. Anyway, this cameo (Tony Todd) situation was rather cute, just because of the ending to his story, and the fact that nothing happened to him. I love a lot of Tony Todd's work. He did a great episode of The X-Files. I wasn't exactly surprised to see him or Robert Englund in this gore fest, after seeing Wishmaster. However, I love that film. It has a cool story, with a kick ass ending. I just can't say that about this film. It is nothing more than what could have been a fun movie for watching during Halloween, but again, the gore ruins it. the over the top Vorhees rip off, with a dad tending to the deformed child, instead of the insane mother. With the deformed child being killed/kind of, and watching their parent die, due to what other's have done. Then he goes insane, killing everyone that comes around his sh!tty shack, somewhere near the water. Kane Hodder, anyone!?!
In the end, you have a cast that for the most part you should recognized. They are Robert Englund, Joel Murray, Tony Todd, Deon Richmond, Joel David Moore, Patrika Darbo, and Richard Riehle. You have what could have been a fun enough story to watch for Halloween, etc . . . However, it was just one big rip off. All they accomplished, by adding in the extreme gore and violence, was making sure I'd never watch it again.
Sorry, MovieGal!

I think the violence in Alice, Sweet Alice is way more disturbing than in Hatchet.
Disturbing, as in edge of your seat nerve racking, then I'd agree. Sure, there is a level of gore in this film, as there is with the bulk of horror films, but I can't see Alice Sweet Alice being anywhere near the gruesome gore level that Hatchet is. The landlord is, but that's another story.
MovieGal, except for having that huge resemblance to the one movie I named, what other horror movie does this film resemble? If to be a throwback, it only has to be one film, then I still believe what I said. It's a rip off. I have looked into this a bit now, and I like how I saw it on one site. They stated that throwbacks are ripoffs, hoping that lightening's going to strike twice. I can't help but to agree with that.

Destiny, the only thing that has me confused about your dislike for gore, is your love for The Thing. Is it just because The Thing is such a superior movie, that you can look past it? And maybe you see it as necessary to the plot?

Plus rep, my dear. I made a tiny comment about this in my review, but I didn't make it clear enough. Besides, look how damn long that post is.
I have made it a habit of covering my eyes, until I know what type of gore it is. I have just recently watched the scene in The Thing, where the dogs are caged together. :(
I rarely ever see what is going on, when the gore pops up in a film.

Well I don't know what to say, for the most part it was alright I guess. But then, I remembered I disliked plenty of things about it, in fact it made me go "wut" several times. First and foremost, I think that unlike most slashers it doesn't have much of a style, it even felt like a TV movie for most of the time. In terms of atmosphere I guess you could say it's decent, but I didn't find it scary or disturbing in the least. When it comes to horror that is something I can easily forgive as long I have fun with it, but I didn't have much fun with it. And most importantly (even if we ignore the fact that it lacks style or that it's not very cinematic), I think it's inconsistent and that it lacks focus. I found the last thirty or so minutes pretty dark and disturbing in their own right, but then we're presented with a Shamalamadingdong type of twist, and at this point I realized I should have stopped taking the film seriously a lot earlier.

Christmas Evil
I thought there was a chance I saw this just because I worked at a couple of video stores as a teen in the 80's, nope, never saw it before. It starts with the backstory which I thought was more funny than anything else, and this would set the tone for how I would feel about the rest of the movie. The killer is a somewhat sympathetic figure with psychological issues that stem from what he saw as a child. I don't know who the actor is, or if he's done anything else, or if he's especially talented, but he's fantastic in this. He totally gets into the role, and I believed that he believed in what he was doing. Flat out, I thought this movie was a riot. I thought it had a hilarious blend of dark comedy; the scenes of when he went out as Santa, giving gifts and going to a party had me in stitches. I had a great time watching this hidden gem-great nomination!

I don't know who the actor is, or if he's done anything else, or if he's especially talented, but he's fantastic in this. He totally gets into the role, and I believed that he believed in what he was doing.
He is in something else, something else in this same hall of fame. He's in Dressed to Kill for about 15 seconds.
Oh my gosh, he was in Boy Meets World!

Jason X (2001)
James Isaac
Nominated by Sane
Subject: Jason Voorhees
Status: Awaiting Crygenic Suspension
Jason gets frozen in a cryogenic chamber and is found 450 years later by a spaceship of really convincing science students and marine grunts. We discover that hockey will be outlawed on earth in 2024, so take note that Jason's hockey mask survives a good deal longer :yup: Spacefaring Jason starts picking off members of the ship one-by-one, with varying degrees of creativity. Two he kills in a video game simulation, and then again when the game ends. Towards the end, Jason Voorhees gets an upgrade and becomes Uber-Jason, which feels like an extension of cheesy 90s movies like the entertainingly bad Mortal Kombat flicks
Memorable Kill: Blonde scientist hotty near the beginning has her face frozen and smashed by Jason, just awoken from a long slumber
Jason X, bad and good at the same time, balancing out to a grade of Average

Dressed to Kill
I first saw this movie in 1985 in a hotel with my parents, on the first night we moved to Boston. It was on UHF station 56, and we were all shocked to see Angie Dickinson's pitching mound on regular TV. That was the day I fell in love with Brian De Palma. He is one of my favorite directors, with his unique style but with the obvious Hitchcock influence. I love erotic thrillers, and he's a master at these. I've always looked at Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, and Body Double as sort of an unofficial trilogy. They don't make many movies like this anymore; Gone Girl was a nice recent exception. De Palma is fantastic at using music, lighting, and mirrors, and this movie is a nice example of that. The cast is terrific, most notably the always hot and adorable Nancy Allen. This is a movie that strongly appeals to my taste, and it's a long time personal favorite.

Glad you loved it cricket. I fell in love with De Palma last year during my viewing of Body Double, I think that one's miles ahead of anything else he's done, but Dressed to Kill and Blow Out are no doubt worthy of being considered as some of his best. I'd never say no to a De Palma.

Yep, not even Holden can remember what character that is. Once he doesn't know, I give up. No offense to anyone else here. I'm just super use to him knowing all about this movie stuff.
I love Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, but Body Double was Brian De Palma's best work, in my opinion.

Destiny, the only thing that has me confused about your dislike for gore, is your love for The Thing. Is it just because The Thing is such a superior movie, that you can look past it? And maybe you see it as necessary to the plot?
Now that I have had those discussions over in the Sci-fi Hall of Fame, I have to say that yes, you nailed it. It is a superior film. I'm hoping every last human would agree. Even those who hate horror, sci-fi, and gore. Also, yes, it is needed in The Thing.
Now, the reason I came in here, is to say that I only have two films left to view. Jeepers Creepers, which I've seen, but I'm planning to show my daughter. I need to get it out of the way, so that I can show her the much better sequel with Ray Wise. Then there's Jason X.
I will do my review on Christmas Evil as soon as I can. I may get delayed, but I do everything possible to keep my word. I already promised that review, so it's coming as soon as I can finish it. Then, however, I'm going to go watch a few of the Sci-fi films. I haven't done anything more over there than read the thread, and reply. I owe that thread a little more. One thing that is going to speed my end up, is that I'm not doing anymore four paragraph reviews. They are not worth the time involved. It may just be me, but I feel like everyone's in a freaking hurry in these threads. God knows everyone's watching the nominations in the blink of an eye.

Maniac on Christmas.
But oh so much better than Maniac.
I think I prefer it to Maniac because I prefer the character played by Maggart. He's a bit more interesting and humble, to me. In fact, this whole movie I would describe as kind of a humble slasher. It's fairly quiet and there aren't a lot of killings at all, but that allows it to focus on his character and make for a pretty interesting character study. It's also just an odd movie. I love horror movies set on Christmas because it's such a strange juxtaposition, turning such a cheerful time into something really dark. Overall, this is an excellent film, and my rating for it will only grow in time.

Christmas Evil
I honestly got a real big kick out of this film. I love how it took a good half the film to show us his life, family, and what he went through as a child. Why that made him who he was in the present. As well as his desire to do what he was doing. You could really feel sorry for him. Of course that made me worry a lot, too. I worried about his naughty & nice book, as well as the intentions he had because of said book. This is one of those movies where I talk to the characters a few times, if I really don't want them to **** up. I pleaded that he wouldn't cross the line, and do something seriously wrong. One of those things that you can't take back. I really thought he was ready to cross that line marking the wall of that one boy's house. I thought at best, he'll scare him into being a better boy, but I was actually worried that he was marking the house of his first 'soon to be' victim.
That was the first time I sat up and said, "Damn it, don't you do it." :p Did anyone notice who that little kid's mother is? Patricia Richardson, the actress who played the mother in Home Improvement. I noticed several familiar faces in this movie. Just to name one, besides the obvious actors/main characters, there was the police officer from both In the Heat of the Night TV series, and the movie Silver Bullet, David Hart. He also has a small but funny part in Disorganized Crime. I love that film, and it has a great cast. OK, back to the evil . . .
Not only did his naughty & nice book make me worry, but man what a temper. because he usually just went somewhere alone to trash things. I knew eventually he wouldn't be able to contain himself. It was sort of funny, but once he started giving out the presents at the hospital, I was saying, "Please, please, just be nice, and play Santa. Don't screw it up." He looked a bit tense when the security guard was telling him to leave. I had to talk to him, as well, "Just shut up, and let him in!" It was great that it all worked out in that scene, and what a hero, but he was holding on to too much anger from the situations at and after work. The people that he worked with. Because of that, I knew he would eventually snap, and damn did he ever. With his first kill, I had no idea he'd do it right there in front of everyone. Hell, as far as I could tell, it wasn't even anyone he worked with. They were standing in the background, a few steps back. So, he went nuts with the toys, killed a couple of people, and drove away. Then, before you know it, he's at a Christmas party, having a blast, like nothing ever happened. Of course he had to think about that damn book again, and warn the children about it. What he said to them was really messed up, and I thought the one mother was going to blow it, and enrage him. It was a little weird that after what he said to the children, the parents still sent him off with a lot of praise. Do you guys ever have thoughts while watching movies, like the one I'm about to share . . . "I wonder how stupid they felt the next day, when they found out who he was!?!" I know it's just a movie, but seriously, they were hugging and dancing with a psycho killer, just because he was dressed up like Santa Claus. :p
Now, for the man he works with, and the alley scene. killed him right there, next to the wife, and it took forever to wake her up. When she finally did wake up, she couldn't scream. Before all that, the smiling children were watching him, because he felt the need to give them presents, before he killed their father. :indifferent: What the hell?!?
Then the alley scene, which was intense, because by now I didn't know if he had it in him to hurt innocent children, just to save himself. Oddly enough, no one ended up dead, or even hurt, from what I could tell. Leave it to the children to defend Santa, and not listen to their parents. Damn kids! ;) It was rather funny that after that, everyone was chasing him across town with torches. Oh, and doesn't big brother have a bit of a rage issue? It was a little messed up that his children watched him drag what looked like the dead uncle to the van.
Now, for the ending of the film. The very ending was weird, but I'll have to get over it, and I'll say why He flew away in his van. The brother watched the van drive off the overpass, bridge, whatever, and he is looking up in shock. Then we see it fly off. So, is this the thoughts of a lunatic man, who actual believes he is doing this, because he believes he is Santa? Maybe this is just a corny ending to a movie? In Christmas with the Kranks, Santa flies away in his slug bug, at the end of the movie. Am I reading too much into this, and I need to just accept that after all this, his van can fly?
Um, I actually did worse with this reviewish type post. This is awful, but of well. I'm never going to get done. That's for sure.
OK, I'm leaving now.

One issue with Hall of Fames *can* be that they are too rigid, too locked in. Whether my picks loses or wins, i've realized i don't know the next time i'll have as much fun on MovieForums as i have with this thread, so i want to make the best of it while it lasts
Anyone should be able to come in here and talk about whatever slasher film they want, even if they're not one of the people who nominated a movie. Like if Sexy wants to come in and talk about a movie he thinks got left out, he should be able to. Anyways, i've decided to talk about

When deep sleep falleth on men, fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. We're with Kristen, Joey, & Kincaid, three of the main characters from Dream Warriors. Kincaid's tossing darts, hanging out with his dog, they arrive in a junkyard, and awaken the bones of springwood's slasher
One down, two to go
Joey down. Waterbed.
Elm Street's last brat, farewell
Kristen down. Furnace in the boiler room surrounded by chains and hooks. Aristotle believed that when you sleep, your soul roams free. What it sees are dreams

Funny you posted this -- I just switched to an Arnold avatar.
I watch the same movies that gbg does, and I would say what I think of most of the ones you like (or dislike), but either we'll agree or disagree, and you don't seem to like disagreements. If you say you'd like more discussions like The Thing, I'll try to comment more. :)
I'm fine with disagreements. I just feel like horror is one of the few things I am decently intelligent about and can debate about with confidence, so I do.

If this is for me, you're welcome to comment on any movie that I like or dislike, whether you agree or disagree. I don't mind discussions. I just don't like mob-type of attacks.

I didn't intend it to be a mob-type of attack, personally. I just had some major disagreements about what you were saying and wanted to talk about them. The fact that Cap came in and posted the sh*t he did, well, that's not my fault.
I go out of my way not to disagree. I've done that a lot around here for years, and it gets tiring to say the same thing 10 or 15 times, so I don't. honeykid does. I will say that I'm upset my Tabs don't generate more discussion, but I understand.

I don't know why other people don't respond to your posts in the Movie Tab thread, but a lot of the movies that you rate are movies that I've never heard of, or movies that I missed on TCM. Usually by the time you post that you're watching a movie, it's already airing on TCM, so it's too late to watch it.

Every time I have to leave this group for a bit, I come back to all sorts of crazy *****. First in the Sci-fi, and now in the slasher thread.
Sure, it was fun for you guys, but you were all backing each other up. I was fighting my battle all alone.
I didn't mind the discussion, but with everyone against me, it almost felt like an attack.
What are you talking about? I was so totally almost on your side, sort of. What?
Unfortunately, I don't think enough people want to talk about my favorite movies. It gets lonely when I talk to myself. :(
I'm sure I love your favorite movies. I love almost every genre there is. I'm just playing hell getting back into the swing of things around here.
I've been watching a bunch of Doris Day movies recently. Hopefully the Musical HoF will have some interesting discussions.
I'm sure the Musical Hall of Fame thread will be great, and I actually love just about all your top ten movies listed in your profile. I'm happy to see Kiss Me Goodbye in there. I assumed I was the only person around here who loves it.
I will say that I'm upset my Tabs don't generate more discussion, but I understand.
I can understand this, because you work hard on a review, and it feels like it was for nothing. Also, if it is a film you truly love, or truly hate, you usually want to chat about that fact.
I'm assuming no one much read my pitiful review. I hate calling it that. Mine are rather pathetic looking. However, I still love chatting about what I watch, and when I wrote this review, I asked a couple of questions. A lame question, and a sort of confused question. Neither have been answered even once. So there you go. I have to doubt it was read. That's no offense to anyone, either, but I do know how Mark feels. I should just do that rating system with a picture, and be done with it.
I don't debate much either except for with gb (I don't know why). I'm probably going to stop though, knowing how it makes her feel.

Well, I have an idea about the Musical Hall of Fame, that might ensure there not being any horror type musicals involved in it. At least not this time. Why not run it like Justin has run this specific horror theme. I still think the Sci-fi Hall of Fame would have been a lot better if it had been more specific of a choice. They may want to lynch me for suggesting this. :p

I also liked James Caan in Freebie and the Bean, but I haven't seen it in years, so I don't know if it will stand the test of time.
I agree about the HoFs. If the Sci-Fi HoF had some type of specifics, it might have been better. It was too generic, so the nominations were all over the place.
Hopefully we can learn from this for future HoFs.
You haven't seen Dawn of the Dead!?
No, and it's because of how much I hate gore, that I usually avoid movies that go way beyond what I figure I can handle. I will say, though, that I avoided the original Night of the Living Dead until just a very few years ago. I asked Holden about it, if he thought it would be too much for me, and he talked me into watching it. I have seen that movie a hundred times, if I've seen it once. I freaking love it. The ending annoys me, but oh well.

OK, a little story I have about the movie Halloween. To start, my middle child, my son, is Autistic. Anyway, I was in the living room one day, watching Halloween. The movie started, and it got to playing the theme song. Once the theme song was over, I started to notice how I was still hearing it, the theme song. I was thinking, "Doesn't that stop playing by now?" So I hit pause, and realized it was coming from my son's bedroom. He heard that theme song just one time, and was playing it perfectly on his fancy, electronic keyboard. Now is that cool, or what!?! Yeah, that's cool! :)

There's nothing wrong with the way the Sci-Fi HoF is being run. You're doing a great job running it. It's just that the nominations are all over the place, so there's no real focus. That's not your fault. You asked for sci-fi nominations, and that's what we got.
The Slasher HoF had the advantage of being run after the Horror HoF, so they already worked out the bugs and knew what direction to take. We just haven't figured that out yet with the Sci-Fi fans. We'll figure it out in a future HoF.
Don't stress yourself out over this. Nobody is blaming you for anything. It's supposed to be fun.
Citizen, you're doing fine buddy. The Sci-Fi Hall of Fame has been run exactly as it needs to be. Nothing should be left out, it's not a specific hall of fame, it's a general science fiction hall of fame - meaning horror-science fiction, anime, and foreign science fiction should all be acceptable.
I don't think it should have been a specific hall of fame. We can do specific science fiction hall of fames later. Why would we want to do a specific science fiction hall of fame before doing a general one? That makes no sense.
