The amount of time it takes to get their 'take' on the world isn't always worth the effort - these types of hard-core concept-tinkerers are often just a bunch of silly old men ;).
The quote seems to represent an argument from the a priori (prior to analysis of 'external' facts) school of thought, which tries to figure things out purely with reference to 'obvious' logics about life. (Basically these guys spent their time ramming themselves up their own arse - but they learnt the odd thing along the way. Like, when not to light fires, and how to chew the fat ;) ).
The ideas the quote is wrestling with are things like: is everything 'physical'/is the mind 'spiritual'; what can we actually know; will my name be inflated beyond the stars if i blow hard enough ;)
Kant was the king of those guys, and in some ways, all you need to know about him is that he separated the universe into knowable things (phenomena) and unknowable things (noumena)... and then he tried to tell everyone what 'noumena' were like ;)
Nah, fair play to the man. Just like my philosophy professor, i understand him not at all, and yet i feel he makes some sense.
But what i love most about those uber-'logical' a priori guys is that they accidently reveal a lot about the subjective way their minds worked, and so you learn something about your/our own minds by default. :)
Please forgive the late response, I just found this.
So I gather that Kant was all about subjectivity, and argued that people make their own morality in response to their perceptions. (googled a bit, there...) I still can't understand the language of the quote you posted, but I guess I won't worry my pretty little head about it. heh I never studied philosophy really, and am only familiar with a few basic schools of thought - Plato and Rand. From the description of Kant that I just read, I'm guessing the three of them would have had a very short and messy dinner party. Food everywhere.
I think it's always interesting, the assumptions people make about others, and that those assumptions speak volumes about the one making them... so I get your bit about how the School of the Obvious boys reveal themselves. It is fun to see how a thought process works (or doesn't), especially without being under the microscope one's self. ;)

I always feel like i'm laughing at myself a bit whenever i laugh at outlandish/extreme thought-processes and conclusions, coz at the end of the day i reckon we've all got the potential to think in any 'mode of thought' we come across (and so to be 'guilty' of similar cerebral 'crimes' ;))
I do find the 'a priori' guys extra amusing though :). I wouldn't claim to understand more than 10% of the philosophy i've read, but there are certain bits that will always stick in my head - like when they use rhetoric to espouse logic's superiority, or make very subjective assertions that they insist incapsulate 'objectivity'. Sometimes those guys display a distinct lack of irony ;).

"LA encourages prats - I mean, creative genii - like (Robert) Rodriguez: especially if they are willing to shoot with the latest digital camera, and put a few lab technicians out of work as well."
"Spielberg isn't a filmmaker, he's a confectioner."
"My friend Rudy Wurlitzer once flew to Japan with director Sam Peckinpah to promote "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid". They were in what they thought was the first class cabin, but in mid-flight, Peckinpah, completely drunk, discovered a flight of stairs.
He went up, and came storming back down. "Rudy!" he yelled. "They got a whole 'nother first class up there! With BEDS!" Peckinpah rose to new heights of unstoppable, superhuman, wounded-American fury. "I have a first class ticket! And I demand a first class bed!" The embarrassed flight attendants quickly roused one of the sleeping Japanese passengers so that Sam could be installed in a full-length, super first class bed, for the remaining four or five hours.
Rudy, of course, remained downstairs.
Moral of the story: If you are a worker in the film industry, you will have the experience of being treated like kitchen help."
On LA - "It isn't just a bit ugly. It is massively ugly: an endless grey grid of one-, or two-storey buildings and logjammed cars. I was a graduate student here from 1977 to 1980, and a screenwriter and a director here from '80 to '84. I got out for ten years, but came back to direct another film in 1995, got fired off "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" here in 1997, and taught graduate students at UCLA in 1998. I have more friends in Los Angeles than anywhere, but I would be happy never to return."

It was our belief that the love of possessions is a weakness to be overcome. Its appeal is to the material part, and if allowed its way, it will in time disturb one's spiritual balance. Therefore, children must early learn the beauty of generosity. They are taught to give what they prize most, that they may taste the happiness of giving. ~ Ohiyesa (Charles Alexander Eastman) - Wahpeton Santee Sioux

While not exactly a quote, here's a wonderful story about the late Richard Harris...
One of the few drinkers who could keep up
with George Best was Richard Harris.
Back in the 80s, Harris was starring in a
play at the London Palladium. During the day
he spent most of his time getting drunk
in Soho. One afternoon he got chatting to a
beautiful blonde. Harris explained he was
in a play, and that she had to see it. He
then got a friend to run round to the
theatre and get him two comp tickets.
Many hours later, Harris and the blonde
were hammered. He reached in to his pocket,
finds the tickets and takes the blonde to
the theatre. They take their seats. About
10 minutes in to the play, Harris suddenly
stands up, loudly exclaiming "Oh ****,
I'm in this!" And runs off backstage to
get changed.

Our wise men are called Fathers, and they truly sustain that character. Do you call yourselves Christians? Does the religion of Him who you call your Savior inspire your spirit, and guide your practices? Surely not. It is recorded of him that a bruised reed he never broke. Cease then to call yourselves Christians, lest you declare to the world your hypocrisy. Cease too to call other nations savage, when you are tenfold more the children of cruelty than they. No person among us desires any other reward for performing a brave and worthwhile action, but the consciousness of having served his nation. I bow to no man for I am considered a prince among my own people. But I will gladly shake your hand. ~ Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), Mohawk to King George III

My great-grandfather used to say to his wife, my great-grandmother, who in turn told her daughter, my grandmother, who repeated it to her daughter, my mother, who used to remind her daughter, my own sister, that to talk well and eloquently was a very great art, but that an equally great one was to know the right moment to stop. ~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 Jan 1756 - 5 Dec 1791)
