The Chicago White Sox closer dilemma.

So Addison Reed is traded, and it's between Nate Jones, Matt Lindstrom, and the dark horse Daniel Webb. Jones and Lindstrom are coming off injuries, Jones a glute injury and Lindstrom an oblique, and Webb missed a week for a funeral.

They've decided who is the closer, said they were going to talk to the 3 guys before announcing, but still havent told Jones yet if he's closing or not.

Im thinking Daniel Webb. He had 7 saves against tough opponents this spring, and put up the best #'s of the three. Lindstrom has experience, Jones is good, but I think the Sox feel Webbs #'s are real. Plus the other 2 are injured somewhat still.

Edit in - HA! ^^^^^^^^^ Just when I posted that I checked and saw Lindstrom was the announced closer. I got him :) whew

WALK-OFF WIN FOR THE BUCCOS! ON OPENING DAY! AT HOME! IN EXTRA INNINGS IN A SCORELESS GAME!

WHOO!

TONGO

Yeah I think it was Neil Wallker that got the walkoff. Too bad Liriano didnt get the Win, or Grilli a Save, but they both did great. Liriano 10 K's :)

Reyes is going on the DL with no timetable for his return

TONGO
04-01-14, 01:28 AM
Its the 15 day DL. I didnt even have enough faith in him to start him today vs David Price. His batting was way off in spring, so I thought I'd wait for him to get the rust off, but today he couldnt get to the 2nd inning.

syj
04-01-14, 02:06 AM
Yeah, I'm kind of hording closers right now. I can't drop Henderson because K-Rod kind of sucks and will probably lose the job at some point. Brothers should hopefully take the job over eventually, but who knows when that'll happen. Not that I'm complaining, but my early season roster construction is kind of weird.

Also, the Giants are making me nervous in the 9th. Close it out Romo!

Sedai
04-01-14, 10:10 AM
Pretty sure my closer got shelled last night.

Also, when I pick up a guy as a sub for a day, I should check to see if he is actually playing that day and stuff. :-/

Yoda
04-01-14, 10:16 AM
Heh. I did that a number of times last year. I'd see my guy was hurt or scratched or whatever, and rush out to pick up a replacement, and then realize he had an off-day. I think at least once I did it twice in a row.

Sedai
04-01-14, 10:24 AM
I needed to rotate some late round auto-drafts off my team anyway, so the guy will be useful eventually - I will just hang on to him for the position depth at this point.

TONGO
04-01-14, 05:48 PM
Hey hey! Some good news on Jose Reyes front! Diagnosed with a mild inflammation in left hammy. Reyes compared it to one he had in 2011 where he missed 29 games. If thats all that comes from this then its good news.

TONGO
04-02-14, 01:21 PM
I dont know about that Mike. I know last year was a complete falloff for him (still better than BJ Uptons), but since then he's had an elbow surgery, hit like his old self in the spring, #'s improved across the board, and got a homer opening day. I think he may be back.

Kind of funny. Fantasy Baseball wise I was so eager for the season to start. It has, that's awesome, but now its like Im still waiting for the Fantasy Baseball season to start kinda because it'll take a month or so to sort out the standings.

Really dont want to play Tony Cingrani vs St Louis. Last year when he was light-out, his era vs them was in the 4's.

Dumb question, but are closers worth running at all in fantasy? They pitch so few innings, they completely slay multiple stats in an effort to get one counting category. I was up by 8 points last night, and after my closer went, I was -4.5 on the day... Two days in a row with a 40+ era from my closer... I am wondering what would happen if I just don't ever run pitchers that pitch less than 5 innings per game...

Ive looked at past winners in the league, and the only one I think had strong closing was Dexters team in 2012. Its not necessary to have 3 or more closers, but you dont want to kill your chances of winning the league. To ignore Saves instantly depletes 10% of the total points you can earn. A 10% advantage everyone in the league will have over you. Run with 2 good ones, and youll be fine. Imo

Yoda
04-03-14, 12:39 PM
I think the real question is whether or not crappy closers are worth running. Even decent ones don't slay your stats--to the contrary, they tend to have significantly lower ERAs and WHIPs than even very good starters. The downside is usually eating into your innings limit without any hope of Wins.

Punting saves is a perfectly viable strategy, though.

Sedai
04-03-14, 05:01 PM
Johnson is a complete disaster so far, but appears to have a REALLY long leash. It;s early, I will wait to see how things shake out, hobbling along with Street and Soria (who looks to have swiped the job closing for now). May sit Johnson until he gets his ERA down under 30 ;)

The Mariners are 3-0. That's interesting.

I read somewhere a while ago that the owners of the Mariner's were impressed with the recent success of the Seahawk's. They realized that if you put a good team together and compete and make the playoffs year in and year out, that the fans will spend money going to games and buying merchandise. So they have been building up a nice farm system also the Cano signing shows they mean business. Mariners have not had a player of his caliber since Ken Griffey Jr.

You can't judge any player to harshly at the current moment. Also the points will drastically fluctuate for like the first couple of weeks. I have been stocking up on closer's for trade bait. That can kind of screw you if you have a shaky closer though. Saves and Stolen Bases are the only categories you can completely give up on and still be successful.

Cute line in this write up made me chuckle.

Jenrry Mejia caught our eye with a new slider last summer (27 strikeouts in 27.1 innings), and he had his good stuff Friday (6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 8 K). He's working in the right division and home park, and next week's trip to Atlanta doesn't look too threatening (the Upton brothers were born in an 0-and-2 count). The Mejia move is available in 94 percent of Yahoo leagues.

The Cano signing was nice. We were really hoping for some more moves here as they still have some pretty glaring holes. But if many of the prospects pay off, (many of whom we've been waiting on now for some time) then maybe we can be in business. They've tried to go young and so far its been a disaster, but it can all change in one year. We'll see!

I wonder if the coaches tell the players not to slide headfirst into first base, or try to remind them during spring training. If I was Hamilton's teammate (or Puig's, to a lesser extent) I would be pissed that they were dumb enough to injure themselves and hurt the team, and they don't even get to the bag any quicker.

Wow, I literally missed picking up Cook by something like 20 seconds. He was taken between the time I started the add process and the end.

Not sure it matters, since there's no clear consensus about who'll end up with the job, but I think that might be the first time that's happened.

There are so, so few baseball commentators who are worth listening to. I'm not sure if it's worse with play-by-play guys or the in-studio guys, in total.

Even when they've got someone decent (I recall liking Jon Kruk a fair bit), you can tell they're being encouraged to take starker positions and make bolder predictions than they would if they were consistently trying to, ya' know, be right as often as possible.

I still have Vin Scully to listen to. He's been there all my life, and even though he's 86, he's still head and shoulders above other announcers I hear when I watch random games. Some of them are hopelessly boring and others are just like cheerleaders. Vin slurs his words occassionally and makes a few mistakes (old age comes to us all if we're lucky), but he's endlessly informative and entertaining. Jose Reyes is back tomorrow :) I hope thats smiley worthy as he hasnt played ball in a long time. Got to start him as he's a blue chipper when playing unless proven otherwise. Of course Im keeping Alexei in Utility, or vice versa.

Someone I think will end up being a waiver gem is Corey Hart (stop your hatin PW ;)) After serious hip surgery that cost him more than a season, Corey Harts now playing outfield frequently, his hittings getting steady, and his power is still there. Very much think bright things to come. Longoria when playing hurt DH'd alot last year, but his hitting took an uptick when he started playing the field too. Its more fun.

Brandon Moss incoming. 2012 he got 21 homers with 265 at bats, and batted .291.

In a full season in 2013 he had 30 homers, but 75% of those were the first half of the year. He was cruddy the remainder, batted .256, he still ended up being ranked 75 overall.

Now Hes ranked 85 overall (in actual production) to start the year, has 2 homers, batting .283, but his bat has cooled the past week. I gotta watch this guy, but Im confident he'll earn.

Starting to climb a little in the Rankings. I hope I can sustain the production. Now only if my offense would come around http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sleep001.gif

Can I just once again say that the MLB Network is the bees knees! And the three guys sitting in the background just basically bs-ing is absolutely brilliant! This thing may get people paying attention to baseball again.

I did the the MLB.TV (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp?affiliateId=mediacenter) thing through MLB.com (http://mlb.mlb.com/home). It is pretty awesome. It cost me $130.00 but it is worth every penny. I watch all my pitchers pitch and you can load all your players so it notifies you when they are up to bat. I do two leagues this league and a $200.00 per team league. It's a 14 team head to head league with buddies from high school.

I just love it when guys have been stinking it up so much, I have no recourse but to bench them. What do they do? Do they slowly start to warm up a little? Nah.. hit two taters in one day, that's what. This game...

Getting lucky on some pitching. Yesterday, a gem from Jason Hammel. Today, a complete game shutout from Martin Perez. That kid looks like he has the goods though.

Yeah, but you couldn't have predicted that from Seager, whose been dropped in many leagues.

However looks like all the progress Perez made today is going down the hole due to that goofball Masterson. He's going to the wire after today.

Alfredo Simon might not coast like I believed. He gave up an earned run and either thru hits or walks loaded the bases, but got out of the jam. It was the first inning.....

Good sentiment Tongo. My guess is he is missing two starts due to suspension. Which basically makes it a three start mistake.

Pine tar! sigh. Well at least it aint PEDs. Pine tar should be allowed. ITS FREAKING TAR!! ITS STICKY! When I want to throw something fast and unencumbered the first thing I do is stick my HAND IN TAR!! Unfair advantage my balls.

In times like this all owners go to the waivers, and always see one dependable name. Like an old shoe in the waiver closet that fits so snug everytime, but isnt pretty enough to be shown off in public.

Mike Leake. So confident in his waiver dependability I can post this and he'll still be available for me to take tomorrow. :)

I'm almost tempted to go and find the Pineda game footage to see if he was cheating while he was here. Perhaps that's why the M's were so willing to let him go. I don't know, pretty damn bizarre though, eh?

When a guy puts up an 11.12 ERA it goes down a little easier when he gets that little W two columns over, ya kno?

Not that Dustin Pedroia was doing me any favors, but Ive been going thru a dilemna on who to run with at second. Danny Espinosa is my latest try as he's called up till Ryan Zimmerman gets back. Actually he's been doing great, does well against lefties, and has 2 in a row today and tomorrow.

At least try to set up a trade or two, instead of letting waiver order determine who gets someone. Thanks.

Were you refering to Dayan Viciedo or Brandon Moss? I thought you thought Moss as a waiver person and would have no interest in a trade capacity.

Chris Archer @ The Chicago White Sox

http://www.rantsports.com/mlb/files/2013/03/ChrisArcherKim-Klement-USA-TODAY-Sports.jpg

This will be a scary start. The first major league game Archer pitched was in Chicago vs the White Sox, and he got demolished. Hey it was his first start! Alot has happened in 2 years, but is it enough? The CWS are hot right now, and I get to see my shining fbb star play - Alexei Ramirez! JOY!

^^^^^ and this has resulted in not a good day for the era. Top of the 5th and its 4-4. The Rays are hitting off the CWS truly awful pitching, and the CWS are swinging at first pitches constantly to get runs because their own pitching's so truly awful.
