Brutal season for Tampa Bay. I started following baseball again in 2011, because I was doing so good in FBB. The Rays were a pitching juggernaut with a wiffle bat offense, and Longo was hurt most the year. 2012 Longos hurt again, 2013 we built an offense, but lost some in pitching.

Worse injuries in 2014, but now our pitchings slowly coming around (not 2011 level though), and were in a weird team slump, except for Loney & Desmo. Oy oy oy! Henderson Alvarez is good but trust me, he aint THAT good! We just suck that bad right now offensively, and I betcha Rubbby De La Rosa wont be looking so dominant his next start. Archer held them to one earned run, and we actually outhit the Marlins 8- 5 but we got this weird Idk....a run slump.

I made another dumb drop, was waiting and hoping he'd still be available when waivers cleared, but no.
So a big shout out to Mark on nabbing Josh Willingham

I would again remind you that "none of the above" is always an option. You don't have to run guys out there every day. Unless the idea isn't to win but just to have something riding on each evening.

I know, but it seems everytime I do sit someone they have a good game. In the beginning of the season I sat someone vs St Louis, and they had a great game. I ran them out there the next week vs a weaker opponent and they got shelled. So I run them out there regardless.

Damn experts. Every expert I ask says Stroman over Roarke, and so I ask them point blank if I should play Stroman vs St Louis, and they wont answer! Cowards. So I got to pretend now he didnt get squished when he pitched in relief because, I dont know, just because.

Not sure that's precisely the right lesson to draw from that experience. ;) It's not like it's more indicative of reality because it happened at the start of the season.

Anyway, this just sounds like simple confirmation bias. Remembering the times it bit you rather than the times you benched someone and they do badly. Especially if you don't usually bench them.

I had Stroman for a couple of weeks thinking they would start him, but they gave him only relief when they were behind, and he got bombed. I kept him, and he kept getting bombed in relief. He and A.J. Burnett are responsible for my ERA and WHIP being about .5 and .1 higher, respectively. I dumped them finally. Burnett's hernia has got to be affecting him. But Stroman I still have faith can be a good starter. I think psychology is big involving starters who relieve (as well as closers who come in when it's not a close situation), and I think it bothered Stroman. I would definitely put him out there if I had him. Otherwise I woudn't have him. If he gets bombed and they give him his next start, I'd use him again. It takes more than a bad outing or two to lose my faith. :)

My pitching is on fire lately, and has been gobbling up ERA and WHIP points to get me back into the thick of it. I just need people like Gonzo to break out of their funk to get my offense back on track.

I shipped Joba, thinking I am just not going to land a third closer this month. Instead, I am streaming some starters, and I might just dump Gio, who is this year's Tim Lincecum. Now the guy can't even get a decent start going in Triple A...

Yeah I had a see saw weekend in the rankings. Alex Cobb getting torched by the Mariners  for 7 earned runs obliterated my era & whip, and I lost 6.5 points. Then sunday Kershaw did Kershaw things, Kazmir did Kershaw things, and Chris Archer held his own vs King Felix....until Balfour crapped the game  Hold that thought, so I ended up sunday gaining 8 points. If Stromans for real, and the Rays can get going, I feel good going forward.

Grant Balfour. I mean, we had Fernando Rodney, and 2012 he pitched a better season than anyone but 1 person in the history of baseball has ever accomplished. 2013 he came back down to earth, and we decide to spend. Spent 16 million on Balfour for 2 years, and Rodney goes to Seattle. Why not?! Balfour was one of the steadier closers the past few years,

but nooooooooooo he comes into the game all rah! rah!, but its all sizzle/no steak, has blown at least 5 games by himself, a LARGE era & whip, and just doesnt look good at all. I mean ever. So bad that nobody wants him on their FBB team, not even me! Now Fernando is looking good, and he's shooting the bow and arrow on us.

Lot of people predicted exactly that: based on 2013 he went from the 9th most friendly homer park to the 21st (and in 2012 it was 8th and 29th).

Oh, well I knew he wouldn't hit AS many. I just figured he'd still have like 8-10 at this point.

Yoda
06-09-14, 08:11 PM
Well, actually, if he had 10 right now he'd be virtually on the same pace as last year.

But yeah, safe to say this is still less power than expected. ISO's been more than cut in half, and even with the average he's gotten a bit lucky with BABIP. Might be the combination of age (31 isn't old, but it's post-peak for almost every hitter) and park effects. But a quasi-rebound in the second half wouldn't shock me, given the guy's track record.

So Im gonna say whats on everyones mind. That one thing that will possibly turn a fantasy team around for the good. Who is the Rays next closer? Will it be.....

http://www.kffl.com/images/media/jake-mcgee-391x213-20100919.jpg

...Jake McGee?! this lefties pitching stats dwarf all others on the Rays roster. He was incredible in 2012, fell off hard in 2013, and now appears to be his old 2012 self again in 2014. Yeah. The problem is Joe Madden is weird, and might not make him a closer on the one fact he's not a rightie.

http://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/joel-peralta.jpg?c4e8ae

Will it be Joel Peralta?! Again? Yes he was our closer when Farnsworth went to the wayside in 2011, and has been a solid 8th inning guy for the past 2 years. Madden likes him alot too, buuut there are chinks in the armor. Peraltas lost some velocity, is older, and is just now repairing a horrible start to the season.

http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Juan+Carlos+Oviedo+_qnzKybj6p8m.jpg

Or is it Juan Carlos Oviedo?! Hes new to the team, is a rightie like Peralta, younger, faster, and has put up solid numbers. He like Peralta has been a closer before for a short time.

There is a fourth, and fifth choice in Cesar Ramos (bad #'s), or Brad Boxberger (good #'s but who?!). Following this team closely I can honestly say I wont be surprised whatsoever whoever it is because you never know what Maddens doing next. Actually I take that back, it has to be McGee! Because its the obvious choice! Madden picking the most obvious candidate would be the most unexpected move of all!

AH HA!

Tim Hudson leads the mother-flippin' majors in ERA (1.81), people. On pace for 17 wins, too.

But I've come to accept that he's just not new and exciting enough for anyone to actually give decent value for in a trade. So I suppose I'll just keep him to pull my ERA and WHIP down all year.

seanc
06-13-14, 11:12 AM
Hudson has been one of my favorite pitchers since his Oakland days. I got to go see him pitch in Atlanta two or three times and it was a joy. I usually end up with him because my heart makes me draft him a round or two early. So your welcome for auto drafting this year.;)

Most of the players above him probably played over a century ago. A lot of all-time marks from that era still stand, which is why you'll sometimes hear references to records in "the modern era," which is a bit more useful, since the game was dramatically different in 1890.

Ya'll should definitely read this article about Gwynn:

How Tony Gwynn Cracked Baseball's Code And Became A Legend (http://deadspin.com/how-tony-gwynn-cracked-baseballs-code-and-became-a-lege-1591491368).

Some quotes:
To know if he is swinging correctly, he counts the frames from when the pitcher lets go of the ball until his, Gwynn's, front shoulder "opens up"—turns to the right. Gwynn watches as the Cubs' Rick Sutcliffe releases the ball toward the Gwynn on the screen, and as the tape ticks along from frame to frame, Gwynn counts, "There's one... two... three... four... five... six... seven... eight... nine... ten... There," he says with satisfaction at the high count, "ten frames. That means I'm staying on the ball. I'm keeping my front shoulder in and staying back. If I open it up before then, I'm through, I'm out in front."
...his incredible averages against some of the most cerebral pitchers of his time—.444 against John Smoltz, .415 against Greg Maddux, .390 against Curt Schilling, .333 against Pedro Martinez, .303 against Tom Glavine—and assume that he was just outthinking them at the plate. (Unbelievable fact: in 366 plate appearances against those five, he struck out five times. Five.)

Congrats to Kershaw throwing a no hitter vs the Rockies. 15 K's too  Allowed his only baserunner on a throwing error, or it would have been a perfect game.

"Kershaw (7-2) quite simply delivered one of the best pitching performances in the history of baseball, as his 102 Game Score was the second-highest ever (https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/479490957583204352) in a nine-inning performance, per Yahoo! Sports. The only blemish preventing the ace from notching a perfect game was a seventh-inning error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez."

http://m.dodgers.mlb.com/lad/video/v33848827/?partnerId=as_lad_20140619_26290226

Kershaw needed only 107 pitches to complete his 15-K gem, which is silly. That's the most Ks without a walk of any no-no in MLB history. (Sandy Koufax and Matt Cain each fanned 14 in perfect games; Kerry Wood and Pedro Martinez threw no-walk one-hitters in which they struck out 20 and 17 respectively.)

This is why I like Torii Hunter...

Hunter ran on the field Friday night and took batting practice. He plans on ramping up his running Saturday and could pinch-hit, but will likely not start again until at least Tuesday in Texas. And if replacement J.D. Martinez continues to rake, his playing time might be cut. Hunter would certainly understand that, though both can be considered starting outfielders at this point if Rajai Davis is not.

"Play the hot hand," Hunter told MLB.com after Martinez slugged a critical three-run homer Friday night to help beat Cleveland. "If it's going to bring a ring, you keep that sucker in there. It's no big deal. Seen it. Done it. Been there. I'm about winning. Even when I come back, hopefully he stays in there. Keep him in there, keep him hot. ... If I was the manager, what's what I would do."

Right? I love that stuff. Watching the sweet swing (and it really was a sweet swing) of Ken Griffey Jr. for many years really helped expand my appreciation for the game. As I'm sure it will do for you in the long term.

07-13-14, 02:58 PM
As soon as I saw you'd replied I thought "I'll bet a Griffey comparison is coming." Yeah, that's exactly who I think of when I think of the "lucky to watch him" thing. I was a good bit younger then, but he was hitting his peak just about the time I was starting to fall in love with baseball.

It's a different feeling watching these kinds of guys, isn't it? You watch a guy like Albert Pujols or Frank Thomas and you're impressed, but there's a workmanlike quality to it. It's easy to imagine them just pounding away in the batting cage and becoming great hitters through force of will. But guys like Griffey and Cutch are fun, because they excel in all facets of the game. It seems less like something they chose to do, and more like something that chose them.

I don't think we're the first to notice this, either:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/t1.0-9/p280x280/65964_548714581920668_7915128441373418445_n.png

The whole multi-decade losing streak thing lifts it all to another level, too. Because not only were we daydreaming about winning again, but we were daydreaming about which young draftee (I still remember the day he was taken) will lead the charge. It's so surreal to think about that for, like, 15 years, and then to have it happen, and to realize it's happening while it does, and then to think you might not see it again for decades.

It's funny because the M's were pretty terrible before Griffey too, so its cool you're getting to experience a bit of both worlds. Not just watch a great player. But getting to see him get at bats in important situations and then when he invariably comes through the legend grows and can become anything. I almost don't have words. I will never forget Griffey in 95. No one got around the bases faster than he has like, ever. No one. I can't find a good video of it because it was so long ago, but it was so surreal when it happened. You get feelings from this game you get from none other. It's a cool sport.

Please keep going on with your rapport. I just wanted to comment on how silly good the HD quality slow-mo is for baseball. RA Dickeys knuckleball was coming in so slow today you could see the ball turn just twice, and this is the good part, on the close up read the Rawlings logo on the ball.

Im liking instant replay alot more than I thought I would. Guess I was already desensitized by football.

Yeah, '95 was pretty much exactly when I got into it all. Divisional series against the Yankees, right? Down 0-2, coming all the way back, ending as Griffey scores from 1st on an Edgar Martinez double, if I remember correctly. And then his entire team dogpiles him (like really dogpiles him) while his helmet flies off and a look of absolutely childlike joy is on his face. Yeah, I was watching that one live. I think a part of me wanted to see what that would be like, even with another team. That was a great moment.

The Double, as we call it here was certainly terrific but honestly we as fans had already just about had our heart attack two innings before when Randy Johnson came in to close out the game. I watched only a little bit of the home run derby last night, but was able to see Giancarlo Santon hit. LOL! Everyone was just giddy waiting for him to come up to bat. When he nailed that ball to the top tier in the top row (yup that close to going out of the stadium) the whole place fell apart. McCutchens face was a shocked smile, then he grabbed Dee Gordon while they were both laughing hysterically.

Think I told this story before but I was reading in S.I. when he was playing in the minors he hit a line drive that hit the left field wall. He hit it, it never dropped to hit the ground, didnt go up, and nailed the wall like a laser. Never seen done before or since.

If its not Adam or Mark that win this thing this year then it will definitely be considered an upset. If Mikeys team from last year was any indicator in Roto, dominance from the beginning is usually a constant criteria for victory. Thats Roto though! No frills, no comebacks, no flukes. Just plain point totals from all players added up and compared. Done.

He went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk in Sunday's 5-1 win.

"It really wasn’t something that was hard for me to do, just because I’ve been in that position before and it’s something about getting the offense started," Jackson told the paper. "You have a different mindset and you’re more aggressive. It’s a mental thing that I really enjoy."

Hopefully this will ease any possible pains from losing Polanco.

After years in the league, today is the day that I, Tim/Suicide Squeeze/Banknotes Harper, made an account on here. It's been long overdue, I'd say.

But why today? Well, I'm glad I asked.

I'd like to make the case to vote down the CarGo for David Price trade because I think it's terribly lopsided. By ranking, Price is the 20th best player in our league and CarGo sits at 336th, sandwiched between David Murphy and Eric Young. It's important to note that the rankings aren't going to be kind to CarGo since he missed about 40 games. That said, he's still been a below-average hitter in the games that he's actually played in - pretty much across the board, but the advance stats, in particular, aren't kind to him. The rest of the way, FanGraphs projects him to bounce back and accrue 9 HR, 25 R, 28 RBI, 6 SB, and hit .277, which is pretty good over 40+ games.

David Price, on the other hand, projects to continue his elite season and they expect him to continue throwing 3.00 ERA ball over his final 11ish starts.

I think there's a case to be made for the trade - CarGo can surely bounce back - but with his current performance and very high injury risk it's far from a sure thing that he will bounce back. There are about two dozen hitters available as free agents that have put up better seasons than CarGo to date. They certainly all lack the upside that CarGo does, but none of them would require giving up the 6th best pitcher in our league.

As it is, I don't think this is a fair trade and am voting against it as it is.

rauldc14
07-27-14, 03:50 PM
I disagree. Cargo is a talented player in a slump. I can see why the trade makes sense. Cargo was a top 30 player last year and he even missed 1-2 months of games.

Banknotes Harper
07-27-14, 03:53 PM
Well, he isn't in the top 300 this year and he's already missed time. If his name wasn't Carlos Gonzalez, he would be unowned and nobody would care about him or even trade David Price for him.

mark f
07-27-14, 04:14 PM
The trade makes sense if we're declaring the season over and crowning Quickie Marte the champ. I don't understand it at all.

TONGO
07-27-14, 04:20 PM
^^^ Thats basically it in a nutshell.

Is it balanced, yes. Theyre both top tier players and the fact Cargo missed time has 0 to do with what hes really worth. If it were a few months ago when Kershaw missed the beginning of the season then does that make him not top tier? No. Cargo is still playing top tier ball when healthy. Price is throwing as good as he was in his Cy Young year, and thats straight from many Rays players, coaches, and Prices mouth.

To veto this isnt due to imbalance, but strategy. Do we want Quickie Marte to have David Price? Strategically it makes sense for us to veto, but lets be honest why and avoid any drama or possible hurt feelings from this. Its just a game.

Yoda
07-27-14, 04:59 PM
Re: the Gonzalez deal. I think it's pretty obviously a bad trade, value-wise, but saying it's an indefensible trade is a higher bar to clear. Tim is technically correct when he says that Gonzalez's name is the only reason he's valued highly, but then, I don't find that to a bad reason to value him highly. Every year star players get off to slow starts, and most of the time they play a lot better going forward. It's totally reasonable to expect Gonzalez to play very well going forward.

The argument against the deal, I think, is that it's not really buying low on CarGo: it's paying a price commensurate for what his production is supposed to be, so that there's very little upside even if he does play at his usual level the rest of the way. The whole point of trading for someone like CarGo is to pay significantly less than you normally would.

Now, Roto does lead to some wild late-season trades because of the scoring system (some categories become far more valuable than others to certain teams). And I think it's perfectly reasonable for Scott to punt Wins the rest of the way. But what about Ks, ERA, and WHIP? Glancing at the standings breakdown, Price could easily be the difference in two points in Ks, just as many in ERA (one taken, one that could be easily lost), and even more in WHIP.

I don't really see the upside. Feels like a "Might as well just try something different" trade, which happens sometimes down the stretch if a team feels it doesn't have much to lose. Which is understandable, but not actually a competitive calculation (which is usually all I require to refrain from voting against something--a plausible competitive reason for it).

TONGO
07-27-14, 05:20 PM
Well it was vetoed down. I didnt think the veto was immediate, but took place when the trade was supposed to go thru. It seems thats not the case.

Banknotes Harper
07-27-14, 08:29 PM
I saw that it was vetoed, which is good, I think. The other thought I had about it was that Price could be trade for pretty much any hitter ranked 15th-50th who is having a good year. Among those players are a lot of guys who are both well-established AND living up their expected production, more or less. Price for Adam Jones, Josh Donaldson, Ian Kinsler, Pujols, Braun, Moss, Beltre, etc are all pretty viable.

syj
07-27-14, 09:47 PM
As far as I can tell, Quickie Marte never accepted the trade so no one had the option to veto it. I checked this morning and it still said that I had "proposed" a trade to him, and then I checked a little bit later and it was gone. Unless he accepted and you all vetoed in that small window, which is possible. Hopefully Quickie comes on here and clarifies. But I'm really mystified by the reaction to this trade. Either you all are forgetting how good Cargo is, or you really all do think that his performance in the first half of this season is more predictive than what he's done the last 4 seasons before this one.

I'm clearly in the minority on this trade, so I won't try to argue. I fully understand that David Price is a great pitcher having a great season, and in my quest for a high-end hitter, I apparently didn't aim high enough.

Sorry I do not post on here more guys. Chris told me to check this out in regards to the veto.Well I believe it is a bunch of bs that it was vetoed. Clearly BC I am in first place. I understand the strategy behind it but its not about what they have done but what they are projected to do for the rest of the year. I thought the veto was only for instances where like a manager is trying to unload their team for like a bag of balls. This is bs and Boo to you for allowing the veto.

Banknotes Harper
07-28-14, 04:08 PM
No, I'm against it because it wasn't a good trade. CarGo wasn't hitting well enough to be traded for Price at the beginning of the year when he was presumably healthy (.255 avg, 26 R, 30 RBI, 9 HR) when he went on the DL at the beginning of June and he's been horrible since he's been back. I get that extrapolating his stats makes him look better - he could be closing in on 20 HR - but he's hurt. He gets hurt a lot. Like every single season. I also have a sense that he doesn't like to play even kind of hurt. I owned him (in my other league) last season and he basically missed the last 50 games in spite of all of the media outlets reporting that he looked okay practicing everyday.

If he ends up having the season that he was drafted to in the last 50 games - and that's a big if - then the trade looks like it will be a push. But if you want Price and feel so strongly about CarGo, then why don't you keep CarGo and trade one of your established hitters who are actually having a good, healthy season for Price? Price is ranked 20th in our league and you can alternatively offer David Ortiz (ranked 55th), Justin Upton (ranked 44th), possibly Marlon Byrd (ranked 62nd), or Nelson Cruz (ranked 15th), or even package some lesser hitters. I won't even think about voting any of those down.

Yeah, they came out of nowhere for him. My roommate mentioned the idea that the A's might get him last night and I laughed it off knowing that they've basically exhausted their farm system. Dave Cameron published a write up of the move and was mostly critical of it until the corresponding Tommy Milone for Sam Fuld trade was announced. The price for Price is way high, and I know the absolute least thing they'd take would be another Odorizzi/Wil Myers type deal (they've said that publicly at least). With Shields I could see it. His best days were soon to be done, and time since has shown that. With David Price, oh he's got alot of top tier ball yet left to throw.

The bad news for the Rays is that all of the incompetent GMs - Dayton Moore, Jerry DiPoto, Ruben Amaro, whoever makes decisions for the Rockies - are either out of the playoff race or out of prospects to deal. The Dodgers could do it, but they're pretty smitten with their trio of Seager, Urias, and Pederson.

I think the Dodgers should do it because theyre too flush in their outfield as is. I dont know what arms they have in their farm system (Im only familiar with Joc Pederson), but I know Joc would be a stronger add than Myers at least.

With just 2 1/2 hours to go I doubt seriously he'll be dealt, but it still puts a fright into a person.

Joel Sherman just tweeted that the Rays are "definitely moving" Price; the Mariners and Dodgers are in the lead. We'll see if it actually happens, though.

I know that Chris and Adam (and I) are Pirates fans, Rob is a Rays fan, and Mark is a Dodgers fan, but what about everyone else?

Oh yeah, I knew that PW was an M's fan.

The Brewers acquired the underrated Gerardo Parra for a pair of minor leaguers. I don't know much about their farm beyond Jimmy Nelson and that it ranks really poorly (29th of 30 by John Sickels).

The Pirates are supposedly in on Price. What do you think, Chris? I feel like we'd have to give up Polanco and something else good or Bell, Glasnow, and somebody else in the top hundo.

Pederson is supposed to be about ready to contribute to an MLB outfield; Corey Seager (Kyle's brother) is a good-hitting MLB-caliber SS at AA who ranks as highly as 6th in some rankings; and Julio Urias, I think, is a 19 year old pitcher in the low minors who is ranked right around 25th pretty unanimously.

I'm trying really hard to get work done today, but it's not happening.

Big ol' NO from me if it involves Polanco, and an above-average size No if it means giving up Bell, Glasnow, and someone else. But Bell and Hanson, or something like that? Bell and Kingham? Reasonable. I think I'd rather we still hang onto that kind of package, but that'd be understandable enough that I'd gladly allow myself to get swept up in the excitement and just enjoy the fruits of it.

damn

So now theyre saying its official, with LESS THAN A HALF HOUR TO THE DEADLINE , that David Price is going to the Tigers. I think we may be getting Drew Smiley and someone else, but dont know who yet. I just heard this on the radio. Am gutted.
