I had 2 grabs where not doing my research beforehand bit me, maybe. Teixiera and Aroldis Chapman. Chapman not so much cause he will be competent as a starter or reliever, but I drafted him for relieving sake. Tex on the other hand, well lets just say I wish I took Papi instead.

Ended up drafting 4 of the same players as i had last year in Braun, Hanley, Zobrist and Romero.

Romero i expected, but not getten the other 3.

Oh and i came across this the other day. I'm usually not into the hippity hop, but i smiled ear to ear with the video.

Just thought the Montreal Expos would be a great name for a fantasy baseball team now.

Btw your Jays terrify me. You got so much talent....youre like the Toronto Yankees now and its just wrong. Just wrong! AL East is gonna be sick this season.

Looking forward after work to review everyones roster. Mine is a pitching nirvana, Longoria & Jeter, and thats it for now.

Now that its all said and done - Mark F I want to give you credit for my all-in pitching draft6 strategy. I watched you every year be in the final 2 or near it because you had rock solid pitching. Ive taken that route, and hope scouring the waivers will fill in the rest.

Well its easy to forget that the Yankees were horrible for pretty much all the the 80's. They had a bit of talent with Mattingly and Winfield, but the talent fell off a cliff after that, and pitching was atrocious. It wasn't until they drafted Jeter, Pettite and Bernie Williams that Georgie boy started busted out the chequebook bringing in Supah star FA.

The Jays on the other hand drafted Extraordinarily well and Stand Pat Gillick shed the nicname with the game changing Freddy McGriff, Alomar deal.

This season yeah man im stoked. it feels an awful lot like those days. I still dont think this lineup can hold a candle to the WAMCO days, but i'd love to be wrong.

Yeah well Rays radio says the Jays will implode like the Marlins did last year attempting to "buy a dynasty". However I think Toronto's waaaaay more competent in all areas of baseball over Miami, and the superior coaching, managing, etc... will make it work. Reyes, and Bautista on the same team is just sick. Ive a feeling your guys will gel and we will still hopefully suffocate you with our pitching. You have doubts about R.A. Dickey, but I'm a believer. If it wasn't for BJ Uptons freak speed run to first last year he would have got a no-hitter on us.

The sleeper in the AL East I feel wont be the Orioles like last year, but the Red Sox. A lot of folks have just written them off but not hindered with an epic pontificating jackass like Valentine should do wonders for that organization, more so than a star player that could've been brought in.

Random thoughts looking at everyones rosters.....

What catches my eye is Tims Squeeze looks solid overall, and Dexters offense looks freaky strong.

Regardless of who Dustin drafted I feel hes due for some cosmic flood of good fortune. His lucks been laughably bad for a long time.

I want Allen Craig from the Fontenots. :yup: He snaked him from me just a few picks ahead of me. Doh

I like PWs team overall too, but Im sure Chris will be keeping an eye on Trumbo & Reddick. Either theyre playing great or producing nothing at all.

Think Dionnes Kinkys are another solid squad especially if Rickie Weeks plays like his old self.

Sedais offense is good, but uh, yeah his pitching is ass. Mikeys teams ok.

I dont know who Vito is (JOBU) but I give him 3-4 weeks and he will kick Drew Stubbs to the curb.

I agree, I think Toronto has a much better core to build off of than the Marlins. It's not really fair to compare the two, because the Marlins just added Reyes, Buerhle, and Heath Bell (who isn't really even good any more) to a core that was Stanton, Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, and not much else. That team is pretty good, and the Marlins definitely should have given it more than 1/2 a season to see if it worked out, but not on the same level as what the Blue Jays have. Plus, adding Dickey and Melky is a huge difference than just adding the ex-Marlins.

I think you're right on about the Red Sox, too. "Epic Pontificating Jackass" should be my new fantasy team name, haha. I could see them winning somewhere in the 80s and challenging for a wild card.

FYI, Yahoo's stat projections have Mark's Dodgers as a heavy favorite. Obviously these things always end up being crazy wrong, but the margin is pretty huge: it's got him 25 points ahead of the second place team. It's also got half the league clustered together in the 70s.

Yoda

I only noticed them on the Evaluate Trade page (I got the projections by lining up some swap of relatively worthless players). Not sure why it's not more prominent than that.

That said, I'm only referring to the season totals. There's a Projected Stats tab on most roster/trade pages (including your My Team page) that'll give you the project stats for your team, just not compared to others or filtered with some kind of likely lineup calculation.

syj, whats the word on the Giants this coming season? Is San Francisco hopeful? Is Tim Lincecum over the hill? Dont get any west coast hubbub over here in florida.

It's been a pretty quiet off-season for the Giants (except for the *smugness alert* World Series parade), because most of the attention in the division has been on the Dodgers, who are spending more than most countries these days, and the Diamondbacks, who made one puzzling move after another in the pursuit of "grit" or something like that.

From what I've seen, the Dodgers are the favorites in the division. Vegas has them at 90 wins or so, which I think is tied for the highest with the Tigers and the Nationals. So expectations are high for them, and it's mostly warranted. You look at a rotation of Kershaw/Greinke/Beckett/Ryu/Capuano (or whoever), and that's really strong. Bullpen is solid, and the lineup has Hanley/Kemp/Gonzalez/Ethier. There are some potential weak spots at 3B, 2B, and possibly LF, but all teams have question marks. The Giants fan in me sees that Ethier can't hit lefties, Gonzalez is walking less and seems to be in a decline phase, Ryu is an unknown, Kemp has injury concerns, etc. But they're clearly a strong team, and it's more fun anyway when the Dodgers are good and the Giants still beat them ;)

The Diamondbacks are confusing. They're still a good team, but they managed to turn Justin Upton, Chris Young, and Trevor Bauer into Martin Prado, a couple of uninspiring shortstops, and some bullpen/back of the rotation arms. I personally think that teams need at least one superstar to be able to go deep in the playoffs, and the Dbacks just got rid of their only player with that kind of upside (Upton). Goldschmidt is good but not great, Aaron Hill is a quality 2B, Prado is useful, and the pitching is deep, but there's no superstar there. The Dbacks will probably challenge for a wildcard, but I don't see them winning the division.

The mood around the Giants is interesting. Lincecum is the biggest question mark, and most Giants fans have accepted that Cy Young Lincecum is never going to come back, but there's also a general sense that he is going to be better than last year. He said that he worked out a lot and fixed his mechanics, but the fastball velocity is still low and who knows if he can regain his control. I'm thinking an okay season, with an ERA in the mid-high 3's, with flashes of his old brilliance, but never quite getting there consistently. It's a shame, because he's just so awesome to watch when he's on. The offense should be good, like last year (which is weird to say after the years of great pitching and no offense). I doubt Posey puts up those kind of numbers again, but there's a decent core there with Sandoval, Belt, and Pagan, and the defense is very good too. I'm a little worried about all of the innings that the pitchers have thrown in the last couple of years. Mostly Bumgarner worries me (non-Lincecum/Zito division), because he's young and has all of those innings, but Cain is about as dependable as they come.

Overall (sorry this got so long!), I see the Giants at around 90 wins and competitive, so it comes down to whether the Dodgers put all the talent together and cruise to close to 100 wins, or having players like Crawford and Beckett fail to bounce back, have the holes in the lineup exposed, and struggle in the mid-80s.

Also: the Padres are pretty good and getting better, and I could see them finish close to .500 this year. The Rockies are not good.

syj

TONGO
03-19-13, 10:18 PM
Wow. Thank you for the response. I could see you all going deep into the playoffs at the least. Especially if Lincecum rebounds to at least 75% of his former self. Pitching is what takes teams deep into the playoffs, and the Giants can hang with anybody with their starters. You think non-steroid Melky will do well this season? Im hoping not cause Toronto just doesnt need him. :nope:

And yeah Im really really ready for some ball too.

Snagged a little depth as waivers cleared - now I have a one-bagger to fill in for Papi as he recovers on the 15-day DL when the season actually starts. Jumped on a Toronto pitcher, as well, just to make sure I can get enough starters going early this year.

Meanwhile: Steal of the Draft? Reach of the Draft?

Discuss!

I'll start - Steal of the Draft was.... me! :D

I was getting VERY nervous in round 7, and had started brainstorming on which middle infield position I would have to ditch completely. I just hadn't done my homework, and didn't realize how little depth there was at 2B/3B/SS this season. Then BOOM, there he was, still on the board in round SEVEN...the quad-eligibility toting Martin Prado. Having this guy in the 7th game me a ton of leeway on how to backfill the rest of my middle infield, which was by pure value alone. I could virtually ignore each players position as I looked for sleepers and upside from the rest of the available players.

That just left me with a small issue at 1B, and since I was able to snag Papi to stick on my bench for the first couple of weeks, I just had to find a sub for the start of the season, and the sleeper I picked up on waivers should serve just fine (Matt Carpenter, who has 1B elig., but just landed the Cardinals starting 2B position).

REACH of the Draft: Tongo in round 1 - Longoria. What were you thinking?? ;)

Too early. But if forced to pick, I'll say Longoria was the biggest reach, followed by (sorry mikey) Harper at 28th. Which is not to say either won't have a great year or even justify the slot at which they were taken, but just given what we know about both, the choice basically requires that they fulfill all or nearly all of their potential upside just to net out to fair value.

From Yahoo

Fri, Mar 22Reds general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker officially announced Friday that Aroldis Chapman will be the team's closer this season.

Advice: Jocketty also denied that he had been pushing for Chapman to move into the rotation, which has been the common thought. Although it would have been interesting to see what the lefty would have done as a starter, he prefers to close, and it's possible that's the role he's best suited for. Jonathan Broxton will now be used as a setup man, while Mike Leake will be the club's fifth starter.

Whew. He wouldve been a good starter but hes a great closer, and thats why I grabbed him. Now I need a 6th starting pitcher and Ill be all set.

my 2 predictions for this season:

-Tongo leads the league in transactions with well over 300.

-Tongo also leads the league in trades, including trading for Tampa Rays, actually trading away Longo and/or Price, but also trading back for them. In the end, look for about 4-5 players maximum that were drafted by him to end up on his final roster.

I am ready for some baseball.

Im actually interested in seeing how Chad Billingsley does. Mark had him last year and did incredibly welll in the pitching categories. So at least he didnt hurt him. I might have to kick him to waivers though if I get another injury. 2 fragile Yankees on my pine with Jeter & Teixeira, and my attempt to have Wil Myers when hes called up. I saw when Desmond Jennings came up and just exploded in all categories for 6 weeks. Adam felt vedy vedy good as he had him. Ill need that type of offense with how incredibly lean my offense is, and pitching so deep.

I hope its deep. Dont want Cole Hamels to pull a Jon Lester on me

At least. And even then, it depends on how far you back in the raw totals. But really, you just have to look at the roster, see who's underperforming, and decide if you think they're going to turn it around. You can't set a hard date on it. If forced to anyway, I'd probably make it more like 5, though. That's still less than a third of the season.

Man, did I luck out with the Cueto thing. He wasn't bad at all--he got the win and struck out six, just gave up a big three-run homer. So in that sense it was the best outcome: looked great, ERA and WHIP just a little high.

Jose Hernandez looked fantastic, too. 20 years old, throws in the mid 90s. First ever start and he gives up just one run and strikes out 8 in 5 IP. Awesome. Could end up being one of those huge early season grabs.

Nervous day today... The back end of my rotation are playing today, and both hurlers could come through like a wrecking ball on my stats. Alas, I have to run starters at a decent clip or I will fall behind in Ks and wins again, just like last year. Timmy Lincecum just isn't his Cy Young self, and he walks batters all day long. That said, as long as he dials up 6 Ks or so and keeps his ERA low, something he seems able to do on even the wobbliest of days, he should be serviceable as a back-end guy. His team can put up runs, so I hope to snag some wins from this clown.

The other guy is J-MAC. He's a good pitcher, but his team will have trouble putting up any sort of offense to back him up, so a win is highly questionable. Who knows, maybe the Bucs will turn it all around this year!

Lastly...checking the player rater, I see J Masterson as the second overall pitcher so far. He clearly won't stay there, but man, what was he doing out in free agency? I got a brilliant start out of him the day I picked him up, with 7 scoreless and 8 Ks...If he is this year's RA Dickey, and I again grab him off the wire...

J Mac doesn't even have a note attached to his card this morning, and he started last night...

I am holding my breath as I log in to see how Freak and J-Mac did last night.

Dang! My ERA got clobbered, but oddly, both pitchers had decent numbers otherwise, and J-Mac got the win.

Yes, The Bucs won. Woot?

Meanwhile - Coco Crisp!!! What the heck? His numbers eclipse even CarCon at this point, and CarGon has been hot already. I'll take it while it lasts!

Looks like ERAs have stabilized across the board for the moment; like four of us had sub-2.00 ERAs and sub-0.90 WHIPs for the first week, but now almost everyone at the top is back around 3.00 in the former category, for example.

Meanwhile; team had 11 runs and 10 RBIs yesterday. NOICE.

I was tentative at the draft, but I'm really starting to like the Youkilis pick. I think he was a steal. 17th round! Good gravy.

And yes, woot for the Bucs win. They came in 1-5 against the 5-1 DBacks and they've taken the first two. Very cool. Way to right the ship, Buccos. Especially putting up 5 and 6, respectively, after being so anemic offensively in the first six games.

My ERA is the ugly part of a donkeys ass. Decided to hold off on Travis Wood as a 6th starter and nabbed Daniel Nava with the hope theyll make him a regular. If it doesnt happen in a week or so he'll be dropped for some flavor-of-the-week pitcher with a weak matchup. Very sound pitching strategy as long as youve got some Aces pitching to soften those surprises, unlike this weekend .

Does suck a bunch though when you go so heavy in a category (pitching) and not get immediate results. I fear Dickey may not do Dexter any favors. Have confidence in Hamil though.

A word to the wise - stay away from AL East pitchers. Their division is the most ridiculous display of hitting in all of baseball, and Im sure the highest paid too. Even the Rays get their bells rung at times, and Tampa supposedly is innovating pitching and how pitchers train. Great article on it in SI

Watching the Yankees/Orioles game tonight. Kuroda looks good, and as of the 3rd inning the O's havent scored off him. Wei Yen Chens the opposing pitcher. I like Hirokis pitching style at least. He gets down to business and its a rapid flowing process. Unlike that stankyassed Clay Bucholtz who deliberately takes forever to throw. Some pitchers you just wish would take a liner. Anyway if Kuroda keeps stifling Baltimore Ill be very impressed, and Hiroki will gain much face. Ay-so!

Still, team totals looking really solid right now, and that's with Stanton doing nothing and being day-to-day (two things I'm pretty sure now are related). Hopefully a little rest'll clear that right up so he can get back to his favorite hobby: breaking scoreboards.

Im hoping Ellsbury, Longo, Zobrist, go on a long overdue tear, and Jeter will be back in 2 weeks. Man, injuries have been rough so far. 4 on the DL, and there are really no decent shortstop options on the waiver wire so I'm going without one until Aybar gets back. I'm not sure if that's a good strategy or not, but I'd really only be missing out on a couple of runs and RBIs if I kept Cozart, while probably hurting my BA. Still, it looks a little off to have an empty spot in the lineup every day...which is why I dropped Cozart. Zing!

Anyway, I'm curious to see how Cingrani does in his start on Thursday, because he strikes out everybody in the minor leagues. He gets by on deception, which might work for a couple of starts until the league figures him out.
