oh right this is fantasy baseball not regular baseball.

never mind. to add insult to injury the Jays replaced the Rays in the AL East Cellar.

basically the Jays are the Raulds of MLB.

(kill me now)

:D

Im just as surprised as you. In the future I doubt any teams gonna stockpile on a-list free agents if the Blue Jays keep at their current pace. Im just looking at it as a teamwide slump. I mean seriously...right now the Rays have a higher batting average than the Jays. That has temporarily written all over it.

Well losing Reyes hurt really really bad. His on base percentage was ridiculous, and gave the pitchers fits when he was at 1st, which gave Melky the opportunity to connect with fast balls over the plate.

On the defensive side, while nobody is going to accuse jose of being a gold glove SS. he was certainly competent. But with Lawrie not good to go, we were forced to have Bonifacio in the infield.

Jays pitchers pitch to contact for ground ball outs. Thats outs Emilio not boot and drop.

Speaking of Emilio, his career stats are a mirage. Pretty much a player born to be on a NL roster, to enter the game as a pinch runner in the late innings. Everyday player, not so much.

Pirate starter Jonathan Sanchez:

1. Gives up home run to first batter.
2. Gives up home run to second batter.
3. Gives up line drive single to third batter.
4. Hits fourth batter.
5. Gets thrown out.

Not even kidding. This literally just happened.

Was nice to see Bautista finally connect tonite, but im getting really pissed off watching him wiggle waggle the bat and taking Paul Bunyan like cuts at every fricken pitch regardless of the count or the situation.

Hey Jose, wheres the humble dude that 1st season that just went about his business without chirpen at the Umps every called strike? Remember him? i liked him.

He also shortened his swing and sprayed the field. sure some line drives got elevated and went yard, thats great.

But ******** it wasnt your only fricken option.

Wow Yoda u are giving up a lot for Heyward. Taking a pretty big risk considering Heyward's current stats and he is on the DL. Big risk, big reward potential.

Yoda
04-27-13, 12:36 PM
Yeah, that's the idea. I think he'll come back strong. I'm probably giving up more even then, but with Bourn coming off the DL soon I'm looking at sitting an above average hitter most days, too, so it's a depth consolidation thing.

Sanchez held the Atlanta braves....the frickin BRAVES scoreless for 8 innings, and struck out a Detroit franchise record (theyre one of the originals in baseball yknow) 17 batters in 8 innings HOLLER!!!:)

Zimmermann gets me a win with his own 0 era, 4 K's, the rest of my roster didnt embarrass me, and I earned 14 points going up to 6th place in the ranking.

I know this is possibly temporary cause fantasy baseballs chock full of invariables, but for right now it feels pretty good.

His names Daniel Straily. If I remember correctly he made a great impression last year, and I think Mark had him on his roster. He absolutely killed the Houston Astros his only big league game this year, and was surprisingly sent down. Tonight he is getting just one start vs the Angels. If he produces like he did vs the Astros, and they send him down again for the sake of Brett Anderson then Billy Beane should just fire himself.

There have been so many injuries this first month. I'm getting a couple of guys back (Cespedes, Aybar, Saunders), but Sandoval had to go out early yesterday with elbow problems and Strasburg and Josh Johnson are having "tightness" issues, which always freaks me out with pitchers. Just stay healthy, dang it.

That's a bummer about Stanton, though. There's no one I like watching hit 460-foot bombs more than him.

Throw your pride to the wind, let your move count grow, and work the waivers. I bet youll do more than tread water till they all come back. Just my 2 cents.

no doubt, my only point being that what the preseason ranks were, carry only so much weight.

Ive no idea what pitcher he was referring to, though i might add, what the pitchers era is Right now doesnt matter so much as what its been over say last 4 starts.

i mean a guy gets shellacked first time out of the gate in the 1st inning, his ERA is gonna be horrible. Except that # doesnt carry over and affect your fantasy team in teh slightest.

For instance

Cole Hamels had 2 starts for Tongs amassed 7 K's an ugly 10.97 era with a Whip just barely under 2 in 10 innings of work.

For me : 4 starts 27 K's, 2.33 ERA and a respectable Whip of 1.07 in 27 innings of action.

His overall stat-line therefore reads 1 win, 34 K's 4.98 ERA and 1.33 Whip

1st round guys still have 1st round value, for the majority of them. 1 month of bad baseball doesn't kill a guys value that badly.

Slowly, I am now seeing holding onto Kemp, Encarnacion, and to a much lesser extent Bautista was a good idea and not overreacting to 4 weeks of baseball was probably a smart decision.

Yeah, Cargo has trouble staying healthy. He had only 518 ABs in 2012 and 481 in 2011. His only full season was 2010, when he went crazy (.336, 34 HRs, 111 Rs, 117 RBIs, 26 steals...damn), but even in only 500 ABs or so he's great to have. He has really high value just for the potential that he stays healthy.

TONGO
05-02-13, 06:53 PM
Yeah Cargo is a worthy first rounder.

Got a question. If a game is postponed due to weather, they didnt get to the 5th inning to make it an official game, and theres no way theyll be able to make up the game later (Tampas not coming to KC at all again)......then what happens? Dont think anyone will know the answer to this, but I had 5 players going in that game, and dont even know if what they did will count.

Yoda
05-02-13, 07:05 PM
Well, what they did won't count no matter what happens. If they don't get to 5 innings, it's gone forever, whether they play the game later or not. It's always a do-over.

If there's no way to schedule a makeup in conjunction with some upcoming series, I think they only bother to schedule it if it ends up affecting the pennant race.

Kuroda has been fantastic, but I fear him pitching in Colorado. Just watched them slaughter Matt Moore and Price. Alex Cobb did allright though, and hes a righty like Kuroda. Already have 3 other pitchers going tomorrow so theres no need to take the chance. Probably wont take that chance. 4 pitchers would be alot though going all at once. Hm.

Zach McAllister has the goods to be a good pitcher in this league. Unfortunately sometimes he gets rocked, but not tonight. Very solid and I hope he can stick with it for the win.

Disappointed with Santana's outing tonight, but obviously he's been strong this year.

David Price has easily been the worst pitcher on my roster this season. Theyre saying there was an allergy problem when he was on the road. Now its tight triceps. Yknow, I dont think hes gonna win the Cy Young this year.

Since Price hasnt emerged yet my only two Aces are Minor & Sanchez. Slowey, Vargas, Milone, and De La Rosa are far from untouchable. Slowey got crushed so bad by the Dodgers not only was his ERA big ass but he had 0 K's! I dropped him in fear then picked him up again as soon as he cleared. Why? No not because of flakiness but because I remembered AJ Burnett.

Had him last year, and he did great for a few games for me. Then one game he got pounded into a sandlike texture by the St Louis Cardinals. His ERA was in the 30s or something, and pretty much ruined his season era it was so high. I dropped him, and even though he pitched well for a few games after I never picked him up cause the frenzy done to my era was still fresh in my mind. Someone else eventually picked him up, and AJ did great FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR! DOH'!

So is Kevin Slowey this years veteran out of nowhere success like AJ Burnett was? Why not. Let the ERA experiment begin! Yee Haw!!! :)

One of the benefits of Michael Bourne going down (srry yodes), is it forced the Indians, to give Michael Brantley an everyday role to see what he can do. And he responded, proving he can play everyday, hit for average, score runs and drive in a few if called upon.

One of the nicer FA pickups thus far.

TONGO

If theres no player scheduled to play I wondered if it would keep me at 0 instead of giving me minus points.

Yoda
05-23-13, 02:28 PM
The only way you'll get a zero for that day is if no one passes you (or falls behind you) in any category. Your points aren't just a reflection of your performance; they're a reflection of your performance relative to everyone else's. If you have a great day and hit seven homers, and nobody hits any, maybe you move up 2-3 ranks. But if you hit seven and the guy just in front of you in HRs hits seven, too, you don't move up any ranks.

And because only three of the 10 categories are ratio categories (AVG, WHIP, ERA), and the other seven are just cumulative/counting stats, it's almost never a good idea to bench players. You can construct elaborate hypotheticals where it might make sense, but nearly all of them involve players so bad you can expect them to perform terribly (in which case you wouldn't want to own them), or very narrow circumstances late in the season. Other than that, wholesale strategic benching doesn't make sense.

Yoda
05-23-13, 02:36 PM
Let me summarize it another way:

Your goal is to get the best possible numbers in as many categories as possible. Most HRs, highest ERA, etc. All of your start/sit decisions should be based on that. There can be some difficulty in trying to weight the value of "counting" stats that just go up or not (HRs, RBIs, etc.) versus "ratio" stats that the player can actually hurt (AVG), but that's really the only way it usually comes up. If you bench all your hitters, your average won't change, but you'll all-but-invariably lose ground in the other four hitting stats.

I assume you already understand this as it relates to pitchers: sometimes you don't think they'll do well and you don't want them to hurt your ERA and WHIP. It just comes up more often then, since for most starters you have as many ratio stats (two) as counting ones.

Sedai
05-23-13, 02:42 PM
The tough choices for me is a guy like Timmy. He has dialed up 10 ks with only 2 walks, but gives up 5 runs on 11 hits, as well.

Keep him on the bench to keep 2 stats down...or put him in to keep up in Ws and Ks? I have trouble with these decisions.

Yoda
05-23-13, 02:45 PM
Yeah. And that's a crucial distinction: with pitchers you risk as many categories as you gain in (since relievers get very few wins and starters get basically no saves). With hitters there's a lot more to be gained in the counting stats than lost in average, so you'd have to have some really bad hitters (or be protecting average late in the year at the expense of numerous other categories, which is possible but not very likely) to justify benching all of them on strategic grounds.

there are different approaches, not saying mine is correct, however i dont worry about my ERA early in the season. What i try and do is pile on the K's and wins as much as possible, and figure late in the season when my innings limit is getting close, dial back the starters and let my closers work on chopping away at ERA.

Thats what makes roto so interesting. I mean i'll get wins from Tim Hudson that i likely wont get from say Cole Hamels, even though Hamels will outpitch Hudson just about every start, regardless of opposition. At the end of the year, when Hamels is 18-10 with a sub 3.00 era, his season will be viewed as a success.

its just that we're in teh bubble of the daily grind, that things seem way out of whack moreso than they really are imo.

They can't have another historic collapse, right? Right? It's early, but yeah, I'm sucked in already. I'm expecting a winning record and some genuinely consequential games in September, though I'd probably still bet against them making the playoffs. But man...even thinking about that...the idea of a Pirates playoff game is just ridiculously exciting. Penguin and Steeler playoff games are great, but they're also pretty numerous, so I think I'd actually be more excited about a Bucco playoff game at this point.

I think the Pirates are better situated to maintain their pace than they were the past couple of years. Their pitching staff is leading the league in K's, which shows that they're not getting by on smoke and mirrors. The bullpen is crazy good, kind of similar to the Orioles last year, and I could see something similar happening with the Pirates this year. It'd be awesome to see that stadium, packed for a playoff series. It's too bad that they're in such a top heavy division and will probably have to get in through the wild card, but take what you can get, right?

Totally. It's weird, because two years ago we were something like 5 games over late in the year, but a lot of the advanced metrics suggested we were actually still playing a bit below average, so when we fell off in the second half of the year no one was too shocked. But last year we were, like, 10 games over post All-Star break, and it would've taken an historical collapse (as in, literally no team in the modern era has ever been X games over .500 past Y date and still failed to finish with a winning record) to finish with a losing mark, but we did. It was literally an historical collapse. That was shocking.

So I keep thinking: it can't happen again, right? That has to have been a wild fluke. Granted, we're not at that point yet; it wouldn't be weird to be this good early and much worse later. But if we're still sitting even 6-8 games over .500 late in the year, it's going to be both hard to see how we don't finish over .500, and hard to trust that we will, given how crazy last year was in that regard.

These last two paragraphs are what it's like to be a Pirates fan all the time, by the way. But it admittedly still beats being a doormat every year, like we've usually been over the last 20 years.

Either way, money on the line, I think at this point I'd bet we finish with a winning record; 84 or 85 wins. Which would be pretty great. But yeah, making the playoffs--even for that little one-game Wild Card deal--would be a whole different stratosphere of exciting. Just playing even one big game that really matters, like that.

I like the way the Pirates have added to their team. The offense is still not great, but it's intriguing. Russell Martin was a great addition, especially defensively, and Travis Snider and Gaby Sanchez were good, low-risk pickups last year. McCutchen is the superstar, obviously, but there are some good pieces around him.

Any news on when Gerrit Cole is expected to be called up? I just checked his numbers and his K/BB rate isn't looking so good. I thought he was on the fast track, but maybe it'll take a little more time.

Im sorry you feel that way but I explained my reasonings in my PM.

Okay everyone here it is. A shoulder injury can permanently screw up a swings power. I do believe Kemp will recover, and Ellsbury too who is going thru the same power loss. Curtis Granderson will be back in a month with more power than Matt Kemp. I dont think Kemps power will show itself in the next month. Thats it.

Yoda

It's perfectly reasonable to believe all that about his shoulder. But if you did believe that, you wouldn't have paid top dollar for him in the first place. This makes zero sense in conjunction with the CarGo deal, which made zero sense after you gave up a ton to get CarGo.

I gave up a ton for Cargo and it was a huge huge mistake! I didnt voice my regret because I did defend the trade! Ok?! Ive been offering Kemp in trades this past week. I feel I could get Granderson only with a month wait. Theres NO WAY Mike would trade a healthy Granderson, nor a healthy Longoria like last year. I have to grab them on the mend or pay thru the nose. If Kemp was playing at his old self pace then I could understand your stance, but he isnt and I dont think its gonna happen in the next month. Condescending? I'm literally describing what happened.

Here's the magic solution to your problem: don't pay through the nose in the first place. How do you avoid doing that? By not getting fixated on specific players. Look at how you talk about Granderson: that this is the "only way you could get him." This isn't even true, but who says you have to get him, anyway?

Pitching is always such a ballbreaker. It never was this hard to stream back in 2011. Also harder to nab a new closer. Competitions much fiercer now than then I guess. I think Marks gonna keep Leake and I wish I didnt drop him like a streaming arm for later. The Reds can back him up, and Mikey Leakes great for K's.
