I understand that Weaver has not been that great this year up untill now but that probably had something to do with his injury. My previous post was just my opinion and I do have the right to protest any trade if i want to. I'm guessing it takes a majority vote and carefull review by the commissioner to actually reject a pending trade. Sorry if I upset anyone. ;)

syj
05-23-13, 05:49 PM
Weaver's injury was actually to his non-throwing arm, so his poor performance before then wasn't related to his current injury. Maybe something else was injured or out of whack, and he has been able to straighten it out while he's been on the DL. But his velocity was way down this season, down to 85 MPH from 88MPH last season, so there is something going on with him. Weaver has always been able to get hitters out with below-average velocity, but there has to be a point where he's just too hittable. Maybe he gets it back when he comes off the DL, but I wouldn't classify him as an elite pitcher anymore.

With that said, unless there is obvious collusion going on, I don't vote to veto trades. It's your right to do so, and I don't care how either of these teams does (as long as they're below me in the standings), but this seems like a somewhat fair trade to me.

I can't believe I traded away two home town guys.:( I just don't think they can keep being this good. If they continue to play this way all year, this was a bad trade for me. I do have a rather large pitching staff though. Currently I am estimated 47 innings over the max(1500).

TONGO
05-23-13, 10:52 PM
Im banking that the stats are real and will sustain as Travis Wood changed how he throws. If it was anything else I wouldve just grabbed Jason Marquis off waivers, who is having a nice run, but hasnt changed anything so I dont believe will last. After losing Zimmermann and Kuroda my steady points of pitching was on its ear. Now I feel the hole in the dam is filled.

Too be honest, I don't think I gave up much to get Pujols IF Weaver isn't a stud pitcher. If he is, it's a killer, as I really do need pitching. But I figured having Pujols/Bautista/Cargo gives me possible options to actually acquire a stud pitcher. And no, Cole Hamels is NOT a "stud" right now

Pfft! Dont brag too loud as Hellickson still can keep y'all in check. Now its gonna be Yankee time down at the Trop. Yankees have lost 9 in a row at the Trop, and I think we will take it out on them and make that number a 12 in a few days.

Near miss with Kuroda! I thought he was bound for the DL! Still got slammed in his last start, after being pretty damned reliable up to that point. Let's hope he shakes that rocky start off and gets back to form fast.

Each manager has to deal with a couple of busts every year; it's time to recognize Kuroda as one of yours.

With ONE bad start? Your keen insights astound, as usual. One bad start during a game in which he was hit by a line drive...Also, can he technically be a bust for me when I didn't draft him? :nope: ;)

Of course he can.

Yeah, I was too rough on Hamels yesterday, He HAS been batter of late, that's for sure. Still, he has command issues this year. Has he been hanging out with Jimenez? ;)

I demand to know what the offer was!

TONGO
05-24-13, 04:32 PM
ha! Youre the second person that asked already. I was offering him Kemp, Price, and Jennings.

I cancelled due to the fact if Kemp & Price get it together it would - 1. Screw me, and 2. solidify Mikeys at the top all season. That happened with Dex last year (if I remember correctly) when he got a bunch of a-list talent, went on a surge for 2-3 weeks, and nobody ever caught up.

Sedai

hamels hasnt had a bad start whilst on my team. that was/is my entire point. His rough outings in inclemental weather were absorbed by tongs.

So from my Pov, Kuroda and his one bad effort for you has to be considered worse than the 8 quality starts for me.

Yeah, I know you were thinking about dropping him, but my pitching is so thin I can't afford to lose out on him on the waiver wire. Berkman is a nice player to have, but I have better options for the utility spots. Good doing business :highfive:

Nah. I look at it like there are trades where you absolutely come out on top, and then theres the Cargon trade. It will go down as my worst trade, possibly ever for how much I spent to get him. When Grandy comes back Ill feel alot better.

Not really stressing the lack of drafted players on my team cause I drafted like crap. Went heavy on pitching, wasted rounds 5, 7, & 8 on closers , and Price (rd 2), Hamels (rd 3), and Dickey (rd 4) werent and still arent anywhere near their normal form. Hamels is better now but the Phillies havent givgen any support like in previous years. Longoria, Jeter, Everth Cabrera, David Price, and Aroldis Chapman are the draftees left.

Who would've thought that Patrick Corbin would be 8-0 with a 1.71 ERA at this point? I initially just picked him up to replace a mediocre relief pitcher, and I figured it would only be a minor improvement. Now he has the best stats in the league.

I think Cobbs completely awesome. He had a sweet run with us in 2011, and was lights-out awesome. Then he got injured and was out for the year.

2012 he starts in the minors, and after Niemann breaks his leg on a liner they call Cobb up, and he SUCKED! He sucked big time! I knew he had it in him, as did Madden, and though he took many an asswhoopin last year he turned it around. Now in 2013 he making his mark. :)

Because of that I'd like to go lean and mean for the rest of the season with pitching. I do need to go on an "innings diet" as my Ip totals too flush with nothin to show for it. Hence why I was trying to trade 2 good pitchers for a great one.

Had to say goodbye to Kelly Johnson & Travis Wood. There are only so many closers in baseball yknow so the value was there for me. Wont go for a 3rd closer though, 2 will do.

I can flop Everth Cabrera to 2B and Yunel Escobars been hot the past 6 weeks, so he'll be my SS till Jeter gets back. I think Rick Porcello will outperform Wood not because hes better, but the Tigers can earn wins for him like the Cubs cant do for Travis.

What if hes like BJ Upton?! BJ when hot is a top 25 in all of baseball, and then he will do nothing for long stretches. I really wanted Puig, but I really mean I want Puigs production at its rate now. It is impossible he can maintain this pace, and so Im balking on this one.

Adam just made out big-time!

Adams Quickie received JP Arencibia, a slumping Starlin Castro (wait for it.....) and Hisashi Iwakuma AND the Millwaukee closer Jim Henderson for Tims Suicide Squeezes' Ian Desmond, Brian McCann, and Tommy Milone.

Did these two play cards last night and Tim lose a bet?

Yoda
06-13-13, 02:44 PM
I thought so at first, too, but the more I like at it I think it's closer than I first believed. Desmond's doing well, and Castro has been a huge disappointment. I'd rather have Adam's side, but I "get" why both sides did it.

rauldc14
06-13-13, 03:14 PM
The trade makes sense to me. Iwakuma is the best in the deal but the 2nd and 3rd best are easily Desmond and McCann

There's also, of course, a huge range in the way reasonable people can value a guy who comes out of nowhere, like Iwakuma.

06-13-13, 06:56 PM
After much thought, I decided to accept the proposal of CC and Pujols for Verlander and Corbin. It could turn out to be great for me, or I could really regret it.

Verlander has not been as good as I hoped this year, even though I suspect he will get better, and it seems that Corbin is starting to cool off. I expect Pujols to have a much better second half, just like last year, and CC Sabathia should be able to give me some quality starts.

Sedai
06-13-13, 07:03 PM
Seems like Verlander is getting his **** together, and looks more like his old self as the season wears on. I expect you are right about Pujols, as well. That said, CC makes me nervous, and I had to pass on him earlier this year. Besides, I have enough Yanks on my team as it is!

Frightened Inmate No. 2
06-13-13, 07:11 PM
Yeah, I was really nervous about losing Verlander, but I definitely need hitting far more than pitching right now anyway, so I'll take one struggling star who should improve versus another struggling star who should improve.

Sedai
06-13-13, 07:17 PM
I am in the opposite situation, so I had to sell my soul for a decent starter. Such is the way of FBB! My rotation looks half decent now...we shall see!

I need Kemp to come back online now that Jacoby is gone. And of course Crisp dings his heel the day the trade clears.

rauldc14
06-13-13, 07:33 PM
again, I took a chance. With having Cargo, Bautista, Encarnacion, Dominic Brown and Pujols, I felt like I could get rid of one of them to boost my pitching corps. I also felt the need to get rid of C.C. because I just don't think he's the same pitcher. So, Corbin and Verlander it is!

rauldc14

I have 3 outstanding offers out to 3 teams that Mike Minor would definitely help.

Mikeys Done & Dunns - Offering Minor for Pence. Mikeys flush with offense which helps I'd think.

Sedais Clockwork Angels - Offering Saltalamacchia & Minor for Posey. Saltys' been awesome the past month.

syj's Fightin Fontenots - Mike Minor & Yunel Escobar for Brandon Phillips. Only reason I threw in Yunel was because he would have to flop his current shortstop to second base after this trade. Though like Salty, Yunels been great this past 4-6 weeks.

Heh. I'm pretty sure that hinges on what the "pitching" is. I mean, you can need something, but you can only give up so much value for it. This changes late in the year, of course, but we're not even halfway through the season, so most owners probably won't offer steep value discounts based on need just yet.

But to answer your question: if you've offered a high value and been rebuffed, then yeah, the smart movie is to let it be. :) As always, the worst thing an owner can do is get fixated on a guy and decide that they must have him, cost be damned.

I now have Verlander and Corbin. And Santana has stepped up. So, to be frank, I don't think I need pitching anymore. Could use a closer, but I need to rectify some offensive positions (2B,SS, possibly C).

Me and Dex have agreed to our first trade of the year. I am a little skeptical on my end, but I got Ellsbury and Grilli for Bautista and Ervin Santana. My 3 1st rounders seems like a distant dream: Only CarGo remains.

Not too sure why I took the trade. The 0/4 Bautista days are agonizing and Ervin Santana always pitches solid but can't get buy a win because he's a Royal.

I figured saves would be an easy category to catch up on, and maybe Ellsbury can steal some bases and provide some runs. Disappointed I had to give up some power though, so I may dwindle Verlander on the trade block for some power.

DexterRiley
06-22-13, 12:15 AM
Well i had origiinally put an offer together that packaged a SS along with Ellsbury and a closer for Bautista and Verlander, but when i submitted it, saw your offer and hopped on it.

Bautistas average blows, but my squad ought be able to absorb that. What i need out of him is 30 homers and 60 Ribbies.

Ellsbury was deemed expendable only because McClouth and Bourgois bring the same skillset to the table albeit with lesser knwn names.

Trades have made me and broken me. Though I believe my team is better than my originally drafted team, I've made a few trading mistakes, I think the biggest currently would be the deal giving away Pujols and Sabathia for Corbin and Verlander. Verlander was supposed to ace my squad, instead he's had back to back clunkers. Pujols was a trading chip that I could have gotten other things from, and well Verlander has very limited value at this current point. On the other hand, I did get Cargo and Addison Reed for Kemp and Carlos Beltran.

Now youre trying to get that b.b.d. again by asking for Goldschmidt, and offering Jacoby "No power" Ellsbury & Wil Myers. A fair trade would be Cargo & Myers for Goldy & Teheran. You would benefit from that more cause it would help your pitching, and move Cargos #'s to your infield slot which you said you wanted a strong infield. Also this way you are not the only one benefiting from the deal.

Votto, Encarnacion, Cargo, Domonic Brown, and Wil Myers leading the charge. If my pitching can somehow come through, (come on, I have Verlander, Corbin, Shelby plus Addison Reed and Betancourt coming back from DL on Friday) then I may have a chance to reach the mid level of the standings yet again.

Dexter made an offer to me of HanRam for Posey, and I rejected. A week later and Im thinking, eeeeeh maybe so, and sent the offer. Then I cancelled it.

Im kinda hung up on the fact Poseys a catcher I wont be able to replace, and I have Derek Jeter coming after the break to fill my shortstop slot. Urge is strong though. HanRams been killing it, but I also think the best of Busters yet to come.

Matt Joyce is a platoon hitter as they dont like to put him against lefties, and his bat has cooled in recent weeks.

Decided to cancel the Seals offer, and focus on Ribbies & Avg. My pitchings ok as long as at least half of my boys throw ok. I hope.

Trading away Blanks, Lind, (and Carp if they play him more) well that couldve been a bad idea. Its done now though, but Im open to players with great RBI & Avg production if anyone feels like making a deal. :)

Dear Rauld, helpful tip for proposing trades: at least make some vague attempt to strengthen my squad. Offering JP Arencibia and Matt Joyce, either of whom wouldnt unseat any of my regulars, for my closer in Perkins, makes no sense in any sense of the word.

You been bitchen about your infield since beginning of season, which is why i been includen Peralta in trade talks as he is a signifigant upgrade.

I'm still stunned u traded Grilli to the number 1 team for Votto whose strengths u dont need.

Hopefully we can come to some sort of mutal agreeance in ways once football season hits. Position needs don't matter if you are getting ripped off. And it's funny that everyone is calling Joyce a scrub. No he's not one of the better players but he's been just as steady as a guy like Peralta has been.

Here's your numbers

Peralta: 89/283, 7 HRs, 36 RBI, 35 runs, 2 steals, .314 average
Joyce 59/243, 14 HRs, 31 RBI, 43 runs, 6 steals, .243 average

So yes, statistically speaking Joyce is having the better season. While his average is nowhere near Peralta, he has double the HRs, triple the steals, more runs and just 5 RBI less than Peralta. And that's in 40 less at bats.

So you may be the high one my friend.

Joyce is 36th among OFs on ESPN's Player Rater, which makes him a mid-range #3 OF in our league. So he's basically the definition of a solid (if unexciting) player. And ESPN's position ranker guy has Peralta 119th and Joyce 130th among all hitters, for what it's worth, which is a pretty tiny gap. So I don't mind the comparison, even though you'd probably want Peralta in a vacuum given the position.

Thank you. Look I know you don't "like" the offer Dex, but as far as it being fair, it's not out of the stretch of the imagination, especially if you are going to be as statistical about it as you normally are.

Peralta wasn't a part of the offer, just a comparison piece in point for the conversation. To me, just because Peralta is a top 10 SS doesn't mean he has the value of a top 10 OF, if you know what I mean. He probably has a value somewhere around a top 30 OF.

ok stay with me here Rauld. Those are the baseball stats.

but are they enjoyed equally by their owners?

if Peralta is on your team, hes in the lineup and forget about it. So all his stat goodness is captured.

Joyce as u well know, had plenty of good days while he was on your bench, because its awfully hard to trust a .240 hitter, that routinely sits vs lefties.

He's frustrating that way, which is a key difference between the actual numbers of real baseball, and fantasy.

the numbers only matter if u started him that day, and just as often, u pencil him in, hes not in the lineup, and somebody on your bench goes off.

no thanks.

but yes i am high :D

Sure. But you only need to field one SS and 3 OFs. That matters, too.

Anyway, the main point is that when you look at total rankings on both Yahoo and ESPN they both have those two players as being of roughly equal value. 'Course, the could be high, too. ;D

You can't hold the same logic for a players value that you do for 1 player and not hold it for everybody, or am I just talking nonsense?

Clayton Kershaw's on The Bad News Bears!!! :)

I gave up to Pats' Seals - Ernesto Frieri, Bartolo Colon, and Leonys Martin. Should provide some depth in areas where I was flush in (saves, k's, & steals), and now Kershaw joins Peavy, Chatwood, and my 4 Rays (Price, Moore, Hellickson, and Cobb/Archer).

My pitching strategy is going to be a matchup process. I know I can throw Price & Kershaw up against anyone, but the rest I have to be selective. All those Rays are in the AL East, and thats where the sluggers are.
